Durable Antibacterial Finishing on Kapok Fibrous Nonwovens with Polydopamine/PEI Assisted Immobilization of Silver

Ju Lin-Xin,Li Fan,Ning Xin,He Hong-Wei,Zhou Rong

As a natural cellulose fiber, kapok fiber is much easier to degrade due to its thin wall structure of fiber in the process of storage and use. In this work, a finishing modification was designed and developed to prevent kapok fiber from degradation. Dopamine was polymerized in situ and deposited on the surface of kapok fiber, which was operated in the mixed solvents of ethanol:water (1:1 in volume) to overcome the strong buoyancy. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced to assist dopamine polymerization and improve the load rate. An optimum dosage, 1.0 g/ l of PEI could afford the highest loading rate of 32.1% of polydopamine (PDA), and remarkably improve loading fastness. As a multi-amino polymer, PEI could reduce Ag + and chelate with metal silver (Ag). The PDA/Ag covered kapok fiber and nonwovens showed good antibacterial activity and better mechanic strength, which would be more suitable for durable oil absorption and sound absorption materials than pure kapok fiber.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Kapok Fiber Using CeO2 and Octadecyltrimethoxysilane

Xinying Zhang,Chaoqun Wang,Wenbo Chai,Xiaoyan Liu,Yanming Zhang

A superhydrophobic CeO2-modified kapok fiber (SCMKF) was fabricated using CeO2 and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) by a simple chemical deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, and the wetting behavior of water and oil on the surface were conducted to confirm the formation of CeO2 nanoparticles and the combination of OTMS with the surface. The SCMKF had the superhydrophobicity and good sorption capacity. The contact angle of raw kapok fiber (RKF) was 114.7°, however, that of SCMKF exceeded 150°. Oil absorption capacities of SCMKF for diesel oil, soybean oil, and lubricating oil were 48.65, 58.17, and 62.57 g/g, increased by 76.5%, 51.9%, and 51.9%, respectively, compared with RKF. Sorption of SCMKF could be well described by pseudo second-order kinetics. The SCMKF could reach the adsorption saturation within 3 min. After eight cycles, the oil sorption capacities of SCMKF decreased, but they were still much higher than those of RKF. The SCMKF showed good performance in the separation of oil–water mixture. It is a promising material for cleaning oil spill.

Tannic Acid and Ferrous Sulfate Modified Kapok Fiber for Oil-water Separation

Ke Guizhen,Chen Shuhui,Tang Jiani,Li Huanmin,Liu Keshuai

Biodegradable oil absorbing materials have attracted extensive attention in dealing with oil spill pollution. To develop more excellent oleophilic oil sorbent, the combination of tannic acid and ferrous sulfate was employed to treat the renewable and biodegradable natural kapok fiber. The as-prepared kapok showed superhydrophobic characteristics with high water contact for the formation of tannic acid and ferrous ion complex on kapok surface, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy observation and infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The preparation process of the modified kapok fiber was optimized. When the sodium chlorite pretreated kapok fiber was firstly treated with 4.25 g/ l tannic acid and subsequently immersed in 4.25 g/ l tannic acid and 6.25 g/ l ferrous sulfate mixture at 60 °C for 15 min, the asprepared kapok fiber presented the best oil absorption capacity and hydrophobicity (water contact angle 150.7 °). The treated kapok had good adsorption capacity for oils and organic solvents, 48.2, 41.6, 53.4, 52.8, 49.2, 41.2 g/g for vegetable oil, diesel oil, silicone oil, carbon tetrachloride, DMF and n-hexane, respectively. In addition, the tannic acid and ferrous sulfate treated kapok was recycled for six times through simple mechanical squeezing, and showed good oil-water separation performance oil, indicating its potential application in the removal of spilled oil on water.

Preparation of phosphorylated kapok fiber using ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and its thermal degradation and flame retardancy

Zhang Jing-Fang,Tang Ren-Cheng

Reducing the flammability of kapok fiber (KF) is an important strategy to increase its applicability. In this work, the phosphorylation of KF with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) was used to reduce its flammability, the conditions of phosphorylation reaction were studied in detail, and the chemical groups, crystalline structure, thermal stability, heat release capability, flammability and charring ability of phosphorylated KF were analyzed. KF showed significantly higher phosphorylation level than cotton, and its phosphorylation greatly depended on ADP and urea dosage, reaction temperature and time, and pH. Urea addition, pH 6, 150 ℃ and 1 h rendered high phosphorylation with acceptable whiteness. Phosphorylated KF exhibited good char-forming, low heat release and excellent flame retardant performances during thermal degradation and combustion as evidenced by thermogravimetric, microcalorimetric, vertical combustion and combustion residue morphology analyses. The residue rate of phosphorylated KF subjected to thermal degradation exceeded 50% in nitrogen, and 25% in air. This investigation demonstrates that phosphorylated KF is an intrinsically flame retardant material. Graphic abstract

Superhydrophobically modified kapok fiber and powder: Surface characteristic, oil sorption and pore structure

Zhuli Yang,Xubin Wu,Jiao Han,Shuyan Xu,Fengmiao Li,Fuwang Guan,Yiping Qiu

As a biodegradable material with high oil adsorbing efficiency, kapok fibers have a natural large lumen with a microporous cell wall. Superhydrophobic modification was carried out to enhance its oil absorbency. Kapok fiber (KF) and kapok powder (KP) were pretreated with three different solutions and subsequently modified using methyltrichlorosilane. Results indicate that different solutions of pretreatment exerted different effects on the structure and modification efficacy. Superficial wax of kapok was removed in pretreatment along with the interstice-filled lignin and hemicellulose , which caused the generation of wrinkles and cracks. Consequently, the surface area and pore width increased to provide more sites for silane to attach. Silane nanoparticles were observed to graft onto the kapok surface after modification and they revealed a preference for NaClO 2 -treated surface. The modified KF and KP obtained hydrophobic surface and higher oil absorbency. Notably, NaClO 2 -treated KP obtained the superhydrophobic effect whereas NaClO 2 -treated KF acquired optimum oil adsorption capacities.

An Efficient and Economic Approach for Producing Nanocellulose-Based Aerogel from Kapok Fiber

Minjie Hou,Qi Wang,Shunyu Wang,Zeze Yang,Xuefeng Deng,Hailong Zhao

Cellulose nanofibers (NF) were extracted from kapok fibers using TEMPO oxidation, followed by a combination of mechanical grinding and ultrasonic processing. The TEMPO-mediated oxidation significantly impacted the mechanical disintegration behavior of the kapok fibers, resulting in a high NF yield of 98%. This strategy not only improved the fibrillation efficiency but also reduced overall energy consumption during NF preparation. An ultralight and highly porous NF-based aerogel was successfully prepared using a simple ice-templating technique. It had a low density in the range of 3.5–11.2 mg cm−3, high compressional strength (160 kPa), and excellent thermal insulation performance (0.024 W m−1K−1). After silane modification, the aerogel displayed an ultralow density of 7.9 mg cm−3, good hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 128°, and excellent mechanical compressibility with a high recovery of 92% at 50% strain. Benefiting from the silene support structure, it showed a high oil absorptive capacity (up to 71.4 g/g for vacuum pump oil) and a remarkable oil recovery efficiency of 93% after being reused for 10 cycles. These results demonstrate that our strategy endows nanocellulose-based aerogels with rapid shape recovery and high liquid absorption capabilities.

Yumei Gan,Linlin Hua,Yuanyuan Zheng,Bin Wang,Di Chen

Effective antidepressant monitoring is crucial for safe treatment, with liquid chromatography being the primary detection method. Due to the complexity of biofluids, meticulous sample preparation is vital to remove interferences and concentrate analytes. In this study, a novel solid-phase extraction method utilizing unprocessed kapok fiber (KF) as an eco-friendly and efficient sorbent , ingeniously incorporated within an in-syringe device for the extraction of antidepressants from biofluids was introduced. The extraction process displayed several advantages, including simplicity and rapidity (less than 3 min with minimal manual intervention), as well as the potential for automation, which represents significant advancements in sample preparation techniques. The method demonstrated excellent analytical performance when coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection, achieving good linearity (R 2  ≥ 0.991), excellent relative recovery (92.6–107.5 %), high precision in intraday and interday analyses (RSDs within 0.8–6.0 % and 1.2–7.9 %, respectively), and good sensitivity with limits of quantification between 5–10 ng/mL. Notably, given the use of a renewable and biodegradable material with KF, and a low-toxicity desorption solvent with ethanol, the developed method stands out for its environmental sustainability, aligning with green analytical chemistry principles. Its application to real biological samples validates its efficacy as a rapid and reliable tool for clinical and forensic monitoring of antidepressants. Moreover, the low cost of this method facilitated by the economical nature of KF and the reusability of syringes further enhances its practicability. This study presents a unique approach by employing natural and renewable KF as adsorbents, thereby eliminating the need for complex material synthesis and making a pioneering contribution to the field of analytical chemistry for drug analysis in complex matrices.

A novel cost-effective kapok fibers and regenerated cellulose-based carbon aerogel for continuous oil/water separation

Xiang Ma,Bohao Dong,Fei Xie,Hui Yang,Cheng Wang,Carla Bittencourt,Rony Snyders,Wenjiang Li

The development of cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and reusable superabsorbent materials for removing oil spills from water presents significant challenges. Herein, a novel, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and reusable carbon aerogel (KR x CA) was synthesized by combining kapok fibers (KF) with hardwood pulp regenerated cellulose, dissolving in a mixture of N-methyl morpholine-N-oxide monohydrate (NMMO) and deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is named co-solvent DNS. This carbon aerogel presents remarkable compressibility, elasticity, and fatigue resistance, maintaining maximum stress after 100 cycles at 50 % strain due to its three-dimensional network of carbonized hollow tubular KF fixed by carbonized regenerated cellulose. The water contact angle (144.7°) indicates the excellent hydrophobicity of the KR 10 CA, demonstrating the potential for efficient oil/water separation. The resulting ultra-light (3.78 mg cm −3 ) and high porous (98.9 %) KR 10 CA exhibits exceptional oil sorption capacity (137.5–371.7 g⋅g −1 ) and retains 89.3 % of its sorption capacity after ten extrusion cycles. Additionally, as a filter membrane, the KR 10 CA effectively separates n-hexane from water with a high flux rate (21972.7 L m -2 h −1 ). Therefore, the carbon aerogel derived from renewable resources presents itself as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly oil/water separator for practical application.

Conductive hollow kapok fiber-PPy monolithic aerogels with excellent mechanical robustness for efficient solar steam generation

Peng Mu,Wei Bai,Yukang Fan,Zheng Zhang,Hanxue Sun,Zhaoqi Zhu,Weidong Liang,An Li

Solar steam generation by heat localization has attracted much attention for its potential in the treatment of wastewater and seawater desalination. However, the preparation of a single-component solar receiver with low cost, simple preparation process, high mechanical strength and energy conversion efficiency is still a challenge. Herein, we report the preparation of kapok fiber-PPy aerogels with superwetting, porous structure, high light absorption, and high mechanical strength via polypyrrole modification of the Ca2+ crosslinked kapok fiber aerogels. The kapok fiber-PPy aerogels show three-dimensional structure with high porosity (94%), excellent light absorption (ca. 97%), low thermal conductivity (0.0241 W m−1 k−1) and high mechanical strength (0.12 MPa under 75% of strain). As a solar steam generation device, a high energy conversion efficiency of 82.4% was achieved under 1 kW m−2 illumination. The findings of this investigation may open a simple and novel route towards the fabrication of a low-cost a single-component biomass-based solar receivers for solar steam generation.

Multiscale kapok/cellulose aerogels for oil absorption: The study on structure and oil absorption properties

Huimin Zhang,Guangrui Zhang,Hanqi Zhu,Fumei Wang,Guangbiao Xu,Hua Shen,Jilong Wang

An efficient and economic kapok/cellulose aerogel for waste oil treatment was successfully fabricated via simple freeze-drying and surface modification. To investigate their oil absorption performance, various aerogels by multi-scale cellulose and different lengths of kapok fibers were characterized. The use of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) enabled aerogels to possess remarkably uniform pore size and structural integrity, while the introduction of kapok improved their mechanical property, oil absorption and retention performance. For kapok/microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) aerogels, an excessively enlarged porous structure caused by long fibers would damage the structural stability of aerogels and reduce their oil absorption capability. Compared with the sheet-like structure formed by self-aggregated MFC, filamentous CNF exhibited better entanglement characteristics and possessed a more positive impact on enhancing the structural integrity and mechanical properties of aerogels. These aerogels presented ultra-low density (4.9 mg/cm 3 ), desirable hydrophobicity (147.6°), outstanding oil absorption (141.9 g/g) and retention (97.7 %) capacity, and excellent selective sorption property, making them ideal absorbents for oil spill cleaning.

Kapok derived microtubular FeCo/CMT with high specific surface area for broadband microwave absorption

Yang Liu,Bowei Zhang,Ye Yuan,Weidong Liu,Hongya Wu,Shengjian Qin,Qingyuan Fang,Gang Yu,Biao Wang

Since biomass-derived carbon materials possess the advantages of peculiar morphology and low density. They have received significant attention on microwave absorption materials. We synthesize a one-dimensional hollow FeCo/carbon microtubule (FeCo/CMT) derived from homogeneous kapok fiber using a feasible solvothermal method and calcination process. The graphitization degree and magnetic properties of FeCo/CMT could be controlled by manipulating the calcination temperature. The FeCo/CMT composite with the calcination temperature of 600 °C demonstrated exceptional microwave absorption performance, characterized by strong absorption (−50.6 dB), broadband absorption (12.4–18.0 GHz), thin thickness (2.5 mm), and low loading (10 wt%). The hollow structure, interfacial polarization, and the synergistic effect between FeCo and CMT collectively account for the microwave absorption mechanisms. Considering its outstanding comprehensive characteristics and performance, the biomass-derived hollow FeCo/CMT shows great potential for widespread application as a high-performance microwave absorption material.

Kapok-fiber@chitosan derived carbon assisting construction carbon-doped β/α hybrid-crystal Bi2O3 for high specific capacitance supercapacitor

Lanfei Wei,Jiaquan Liu,Qiuman Zhou,Shaolong Liu,Zhifeng Su,Yurong Yan

Bismuth trioxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) acts as an ideal material for supercapacitors because of its high theoretical specific capacity, but its crystal form and compact accumulation limit its specific capacitance below its theoretical value of 1370 F g -1 . In this study, a specific kapok fiber@chitosan-derived carbon (KCC) doping inside β/α hybrid-crystal Bi 2 O 3 (KCC-Bi 2 O 3 ) was constructed by KCC assisting to enhance the contact area between Bi-MOF and air during calcination. A specific capacitance of 1135 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 was obtained for KCC-Bi 2 O 3 , which matched 82.3 % of its theoretical value. An asymmetric capacitor, with KCC-Bi 2 O 3 as a negative electrode and NiCo-LDH as a positive electrode, exhibits a potential window of 1.6 V and an energy density of 17.3 Wh kg -1 at 800 W kg -1 . The result demonstrates that incorporating a KCC carbon source can significantly enhance the capacitance of mixed crystal form Bi 2 O 3 , highlighting its potential in supercapacitor applications.
