Self-powered wearable human-computer interaction system based on kapok cellulose nanofibers

Yating Shi,Changmei Lin,Peiwei Deng,Leo N.Y. Cao,Weiguo Wang,Wanjing Li,Hezhi Lin,Yun Yang,Hao Wang,Meidan Ye,Zijie Xu,Shilin Cao,Wenxi Guo

As wearable devices in the fields of medical health, human–computer interaction, and motion detection continue to diversify in their materials and forms, they show vast application potential. Cellulose materials are emerging as prominent materials for fabricating flexible wearable electronic devices because of their favorable skin compatibility, cost-effectiveness, and abundance. However, there is little research on the use of kapok cellulose in wearable electronics. This study addresses this knowledge gap by exploring the high-yield production and waste recycling potential of kapok cellulose. To overcome the limitations of conventional cellulose films, such as poor flexibility, high haze, and limited light transmittance, a kapok cellulose nanofiber film (KCNF) with a transparency of > 90 % and a tensile strain of > 20 % is prepared. The use of the KCNF as a friction electric material in the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) improves its electrical output performance by 228 % and permits its comfortable long-term attachment to the skin for self-powered tactile sensing applications, including game control, text input, and smart medical devices. This study demonstrates that the exploration of KCNF materials expands the options available for developing wearable electronic devices with numerous potential applications.

Synergistic antibacterial mechanisms from kapok cellulose fiber structure and chemistry promote infected wound healing

Mengdi Xu,Hermela Ejegu Feysa,Xiaoqing Ni,Guangbiao Xu,Hua Shen,Yueqi Zhong,Xingjie Wang

Natural antibacterial mechanism of kapok fiber • Nanobumps induced mechanical deformation and membrane rupture • Lignin, flavonoids and triterpenoids exhibited chemical antibacterial properties. • Kapok gauze promoted the healing process of wounds infected by bacteria. Kapok fibers demonstrate potential advantages in the field of medical dressings, though the intrinsic mechanisms of their antibacterial activity have not been systematically elucidated. This study utilizes an integrated approach involving physical characterization, chemical analysis, and antibacterial evaluation to elucidate the natural antibacterial mechanisms of kapok fibers. The results indicate that kapok fibers possess axially aligned nanoscale protrusions distributed across their surfaces. Chemical analysis reveals a complex composite wax layer on the fiber surface, which contains silanes, fatty acids, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. Comparative antibacterial experiments utilizing kapok fibers with varying compositions, along with physicochemical characterization, reveal three synergistic antibacterial mechanisms: (1) The superhydrophobic surface demonstrates minimal bacterial adhesion, thereby reducing microbial colonization. (2) Surface nanotopography induces mechanical deformation and subsequent membrane rupture of bacterial cells through tensile stress mechanisms. (3) Chemical constituents including lignin, flavonoids and triterpenoids exhibit membrane-disruptive activity. The hydroentangled kapok gauze promotes the healing of bacterially infected wounds by effectively reducing the bacterial load and modulating the wound microenvironment. This systematic investigation not only reveals the multi-level antibacterial mechanisms of kapok fibers but also establishes a theoretical foundation for developing novel kapok fiber medical gauzes.

A multifunctional kapok cellulose nanofiber/MWCNT/Fe3O4 flexible multilayer film for electromagnetic interference shielding

Rui Teng,Aojia Zhang,Kun Zhang,Yang Li,Xue Liu,Wenye Sun,Chengcheng Suo,Sha Luo,Chunhui Ma,Mingcong Xu,Shouxin Liu,Wei Li

With the rapid advancement of 5G communications and flexible electronics, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with multifunctionality and environmental adaptability are urgently needed. Herein, we report a sustainable and cost-effective strategy to fabricate multifunctional multilayer films incorporating kapok cellulose nanofibers, MWCNT, and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Specifically, films with 3–11 layers are obtained via sequential solution deposition and vacuum filtration. The multilayer architecture enhances interfacial polarization and multiple internal reflection, yielding an EMI shielding effectiveness of 46 dB for samples with 11 layers. Meanwhile, the synergistic combination of polymeric, conductive, and magnetic components endows the film with inherent flexibility, thermal stability, and additional functionalities, including photothermal conversion (reaching up to 108 °C under 2.0 sun illumination) and a Seebeck coefficient of 56.3 μV/K. This work provides an effective approach for integrating EMI shielding with energy-related functionalities in sustainable bio-based films, offering novel insights into the design of high-performance multifunctional EMI shielding materials.

Multiscale kapok/cellulose aerogels for oil absorption: The study on structure and oil absorption properties

Huimin Zhang,Guangrui Zhang,Hanqi Zhu,Fumei Wang,Guangbiao Xu,Hua Shen,Jilong Wang

An efficient and economic kapok/cellulose aerogel for waste oil treatment was successfully fabricated via simple freeze-drying and surface modification. To investigate their oil absorption performance, various aerogels by multi-scale cellulose and different lengths of kapok fibers were characterized. The use of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) enabled aerogels to possess remarkably uniform pore size and structural integrity, while the introduction of kapok improved their mechanical property, oil absorption and retention performance. For kapok/microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) aerogels, an excessively enlarged porous structure caused by long fibers would damage the structural stability of aerogels and reduce their oil absorption capability. Compared with the sheet-like structure formed by self-aggregated MFC, filamentous CNF exhibited better entanglement characteristics and possessed a more positive impact on enhancing the structural integrity and mechanical properties of aerogels. These aerogels presented ultra-low density (4.9 mg/cm 3 ), desirable hydrophobicity (147.6°), outstanding oil absorption (141.9 g/g) and retention (97.7 %) capacity, and excellent selective sorption property, making them ideal absorbents for oil spill cleaning.
