Kapok fiber, a natural hollow fiber with thin shell and large cavity, has rarely been used as adsorbent for heavy metal ions. In this paper, kapok fibers were modified with diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) after hydrophilicity treatment. The adsorption behavior of the resultant kapok-DTPA influenced by pH, adsorption time and initial concentration of metal ion was investigated. The results demonstrate that adsorption equilibrium was reached within 2 min for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ . Adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption rate was well fitted by pseudo-second-order rate model. The adsorption isotherms were studied, and the best fit was obtained in the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of kapok-DTPA were 310.6 mg g −1 for Pb 2+ , 163.7 mg g −1 for Cd 2+ , 101.0 mg g −1 for Cu 2+ , respectively. After eight desorption and re-adsorption loops, the lost adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ were less than 10 %. Because of the large specific area derived from the hollow fiber structure, kapok-DTPA exhibited much better adsorption capacity compared with many other reported adsorbents based on natural materials.

BACKGROUND An increasing number of oil spills has caused a rise in demand for oil sorption materials. Kapok fiber, a natural fiber, shows promising potential as an oil absorbent as it is abundantly available and exhibits high absorption capacity. Superhydrophobic kapok fiber based on graphene modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H - perfluorodecyltriclorosilane (FTS) was prepared. RESULTS FTS-modified graphene-coated kapok fibers (FGRKF) were characterized by contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. After modification, the contact angle of water on kapok fiber rose from 114.7° to 150.6°. The oil sorption capacities of kapok fiber for diesel, soybean oil and lubricating oil were 27.55, 38.28 and 43.57 g g −1 . The oil sorption capacities of FGRKF for diesel, soybean oil and lubricating oil reached 50.74, 61.08 and 68.26 g g −1 , respectively. CONCLUSION The superhydrophobic/superoleophilic FGRKF is an efficient oil sorption material, which can be used for the cleanup of oil spills. This work provides a simple method for the fabrication of superhydrophobic oil absorption material. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

Kapok fiber (KF) with a naturally hollow structure has found an increasing application in filling and composite materials, most of which have a demand of flame retardancy. To realize this high-value utilization, KF was phosphorylated by a reactive phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing flame retardant for enhanced fire safety. The flame retardant was first synthesized by the reaction of urea and diethylene triamine pentakis (methyl phosphonic acid) (a commercially available scale inhibitor) with low cost, and then, applied in the phosphorylation of KF in the presence of dicyandiamide. In thermogravimetric analysis, phosphorylated KF showed 38.1% residue weight in nitrogen and 10.2% residue weight in air at 700°C, whereas the residue weight of KF was 8.4% in nitrogen and 1.5% in air. In microcalorimetric analysis, the heat release capacity and total heat release of phosphorylated KF displayed a reduction of 81% and 55%, respectively. In vertical combustion test, phosphorylated KF was difficult to ignite and had no afterburning or smoldering. The tests indicated that phosphorylated KF had excellent charring properties, low heat release, and good flame retardancy. This work suggests a promising strategy of enhancing the flame retardancy of KF and increasing its applicability in filling and composite materials.

A superhydrophobic CeO2-modified kapok fiber (SCMKF) was fabricated using CeO2 and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) by a simple chemical deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, and the wetting behavior of water and oil on the surface were conducted to confirm the formation of CeO2 nanoparticles and the combination of OTMS with the surface. The SCMKF had the superhydrophobicity and good sorption capacity. The contact angle of raw kapok fiber (RKF) was 114.7°, however, that of SCMKF exceeded 150°. Oil absorption capacities of SCMKF for diesel oil, soybean oil, and lubricating oil were 48.65, 58.17, and 62.57 g/g, increased by 76.5%, 51.9%, and 51.9%, respectively, compared with RKF. Sorption of SCMKF could be well described by pseudo second-order kinetics. The SCMKF could reach the adsorption saturation within 3 min. After eight cycles, the oil sorption capacities of SCMKF decreased, but they were still much higher than those of RKF. The SCMKF showed good performance in the separation of oil–water mixture. It is a promising material for cleaning oil spill.

As one of the most promising solid electrolytes, Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) has received great attention in the field of all solid-state lithium-ion batteries. However, LLZO, as a solid material, has far less contact with the electrode than original liquid electrolyte with wettable properties in practical applications. In this study, porous LLZO solid electrolytes were fabricated by both mechanical and dispersive mixing methods with modified kapok fibers as pore-forming agents. The results show that the pores of LLZO prepared by dispersive mixing are more homogeneous than that prepared by mechanical mixing, and the ionic conductivity of LLZO fabricated by dispersive mixing remains in the same order of magnitude as the ionic conductivity of the original LLZO solid electrolyte. At the same time, the formation of ordered pore channels for porous LLZO is conducive to increasing the contact area between the solid electrolyte and the electrode material, which lays a foundation for reducing the impedance of solid electrolyte.

Monitoring wound healing status is crucial for regulating the healing process. Within this context, functional dressings possessing transparency for visual inspection represent a significant research focus, as they enable continuous wound observation without removal. This study successfully developed a transparent cellulose-based dressings derived from natural kapok fibers, exhibiting excellent optical clarity, antibacterial activity and pro-healing properties. A structurally stable and optically transparent dressing matrix is constructed through fibrillation-induced entanglement and interfibrillar locking of kapok fibers. This structural characteristic allows for optical visualization of the wound bed, facilitating real-time dynamic monitoring. To further enhance functionality, L-borneol is introduced via surface grafting, conferring resistance to bacterial adhesion. In vitro assays confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of transparent dressing. Concurrently, L-borneol improved the transdermal delivery efficiency of growth factors, and effectively promoted cell migration and proliferation. In both normal and diabetic wound models, the transparent dressing accelerated healing rates. Collectively, this multifunctional transparent cellulose-based dressings provides a promising solution for advancing integrated strategies in wound healing monitoring and treatment.

Biodegradable oil absorbing materials have attracted extensive attention in dealing with oil spill pollution. To develop more excellent oleophilic oil sorbent, the combination of tannic acid and ferrous sulfate was employed to treat the renewable and biodegradable natural kapok fiber. The as-prepared kapok showed superhydrophobic characteristics with high water contact for the formation of tannic acid and ferrous ion complex on kapok surface, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy observation and infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The preparation process of the modified kapok fiber was optimized. When the sodium chlorite pretreated kapok fiber was firstly treated with 4.25 g/ l tannic acid and subsequently immersed in 4.25 g/ l tannic acid and 6.25 g/ l ferrous sulfate mixture at 60 °C for 15 min, the asprepared kapok fiber presented the best oil absorption capacity and hydrophobicity (water contact angle 150.7 °). The treated kapok had good adsorption capacity for oils and organic solvents, 48.2, 41.6, 53.4, 52.8, 49.2, 41.2 g/g for vegetable oil, diesel oil, silicone oil, carbon tetrachloride, DMF and n-hexane, respectively. In addition, the tannic acid and ferrous sulfate treated kapok was recycled for six times through simple mechanical squeezing, and showed good oil-water separation performance oil, indicating its potential application in the removal of spilled oil on water.

Cellulose nanofibers (NF) were extracted from kapok fibers using TEMPO oxidation, followed by a combination of mechanical grinding and ultrasonic processing. The TEMPO-mediated oxidation significantly impacted the mechanical disintegration behavior of the kapok fibers, resulting in a high NF yield of 98%. This strategy not only improved the fibrillation efficiency but also reduced overall energy consumption during NF preparation. An ultralight and highly porous NF-based aerogel was successfully prepared using a simple ice-templating technique. It had a low density in the range of 3.5–11.2 mg cm−3, high compressional strength (160 kPa), and excellent thermal insulation performance (0.024 W m−1K−1). After silane modification, the aerogel displayed an ultralow density of 7.9 mg cm−3, good hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 128°, and excellent mechanical compressibility with a high recovery of 92% at 50% strain. Benefiting from the silene support structure, it showed a high oil absorptive capacity (up to 71.4 g/g for vacuum pump oil) and a remarkable oil recovery efficiency of 93% after being reused for 10 cycles. These results demonstrate that our strategy endows nanocellulose-based aerogels with rapid shape recovery and high liquid absorption capabilities.

We prepared carbon aerogel/RuO 2 composites with three-dimensional microtubes based on renewable natural kapok fibers by combining a NaClO 2 pretreatment, CO 2 activation and loading of RuO 2 nanoparticles . The electrochemical performance of the material was optimized by tuning the carbonization temperature. The composite calcined at 800 °C for 2 h and activated by CO 2 for 30 min possessed an integrated tubular structure and moderate pore size distribution . This composite material also showed highest specific capacitance of 433 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 with a capacitance retention of 91.5% for 2000 cycles in 3 M KOH solution in three-electrode system. The maximum energy density was 8.92 Wh kg −1 at 558.12 W kg −1 at a cell voltage of 1 V in 3.0 M KOH aqueous electrolyte in a symmetric device. We attribute the reversible capacity of the obtained bio-derived carbon aerogel/RuO 2 composites to the high-speed flow of the electrolyte in the unique hollow tubular structure, the appropriate pore size distribution and the synergetic effect of the high capacitance of RuO 2 and good stability of the carbon material.

BACKGROUND Oil spills from oil tankers and ships or industrial accidents have serious impacts on the ecological environment. There is an urgent need for finding effective ways to resolve these problems. The use of low-cost and efficient adsorbents is considered to be one of the most effective ways. RESULTS In this study, an ultra-light 3D kapok fiber-reduced graphene oxide (TKF-rGO) aerogel was prepared by a simple and green one-step hydrothermal method. The kapok fiber used as skeleton was embedded in a graphene network to successfully form a 3D aerogel structure. The as-prepared TKF-rGO aerogel featured low density, excellent mechanical strength, high thermal stability, and high hydrophobic lipophilicity. Furthermore, continuous oil–water separation could be achieved by the aerogel when connected to a vacuum system. The adsorption capacity of TKF-rGO aerogel for various common oil products and organic solvents was 1.5-fold greater than that of pure rGO aerogel and six-fold greater than that of polypropylene melt spray, respectively. In addition, the initial adsorption capacity of the as-prepared TKF-rGO aerogel was maintained at 94% after eight cycles. CONCLUSION The TKF-rGO aerogel could be synthesized by a low-cost and green method, which was suitable for commercial production, and showed competitive adsorption capacities for oil removal. Thus, the TKF-rGO aerogel is expected to be employed as a promising adsorbent in the removal of oil spill or hazardous organic solvents from water. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

The nanostructure of materials plays a key role in interfacial solar vapor generation. Traditional approaches for optimizing interfacial evaporation rely on the external devices to enable floating on water. However, how to unlock the self-floating ability of absorbers for solar interfacial evaporation have not been taken into account. Here, we propose a self-floating absorber based on kapok fibers, which possess large hollow structure and hydrophobicity to enable this absorber float on water without assistance. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were loaded on kapok fibres by in-situ synthesis and showed an extended adsorption (74.7%) wavelength ranging from 280 to 2500 nm. Both the hollow structure of kapok fibres and the thermal localization effect of AuNPs sustaintially enhance the solar interfere vapor generation effect (4 kW m −2 , up to 89%). Also, Each cycle test was carried out under 1 h irradiation. The AuNPs/kapok membrane exhibited stable cycling performance, which maintained an evaporation rate of 6.98 kg m −2 h −1 over 10 times without performance decrease. These results provide new insights for design of advanced photothermal conversion materials with biomass as supporting material, We expect this as-prepared membrane can be used for a range of applications, such as solar interference steam generation, desalination and disinfection, to name a few.

As a biodegradable material with high oil adsorbing efficiency, kapok fibers have a natural large lumen with a microporous cell wall. Superhydrophobic modification was carried out to enhance its oil absorbency. Kapok fiber (KF) and kapok powder (KP) were pretreated with three different solutions and subsequently modified using methyltrichlorosilane. Results indicate that different solutions of pretreatment exerted different effects on the structure and modification efficacy. Superficial wax of kapok was removed in pretreatment along with the interstice-filled lignin and hemicellulose , which caused the generation of wrinkles and cracks. Consequently, the surface area and pore width increased to provide more sites for silane to attach. Silane nanoparticles were observed to graft onto the kapok surface after modification and they revealed a preference for NaClO 2 -treated surface. The modified KF and KP obtained hydrophobic surface and higher oil absorbency. Notably, NaClO 2 -treated KP obtained the superhydrophobic effect whereas NaClO 2 -treated KF acquired optimum oil adsorption capacities.
