Graphical Ketjen in the new black : NENU5-KB composite materials exhibited excellent electrochemical performance for the nonenzymatic detection of H 2 O 2 , including a broad linear range, low detection limit, and high sensitivity, as well as excellent selectivity and strong stability. The rational design and development of efficient and affordable enzyme-free electrocatalysts for electrochemical detection are of great significance for the large-scale applications of sensor materials, and have aroused increasing research interest. Herein, we report that a typical polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal–organic framework (NENU5) that was hybridized with ketjenblack (KB) was a highly efficient electrochemical catalyst that could be used for the highly sensitive nonenzymatic detection of H 2 O 2 . The composite catalyst exhibited superb electrochemical detection performance towards H 2 O 2 , including a broad linear range from 10–50 m m , a low detection limit of 1.03 μ m , and a high sensitivity of 33.77 μA m m −1 , as well as excellent selectivity and stability. These excellent electrocatalytic properties should be attributed to the unique redox activity of the POM, the high specific surface area of the metal–organic framework (MOF), the strong conductivity of KB, and the synergistic effects of the multiple components in the composites during the electrolysis of H 2 O 2 . This work provides a new pathway for the exploration of nonenzymatic electrochemical sensors.

Graphical A simple carbon black (Ketjenblack, KB)-multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite was fabricated and used as the air cathode in a Li-O 2 battery, achieving significantly improved specific capacity (up to 10611 mAh/g carbon ), rate capability and cyclability than pristine KB, owing to the synergy of KB's abundant surface area for accommodation of discharge products and MWCNTs’ long-range electronic conductivity. A simple carbon black (Ketjenblack, KB)-multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite was fabricated and used as the air cathode in a Li-O 2 battery where MWCNTs primarily serve as microscopic cables to enhance long-range electronic conductivity. With optimal KB:MWCNTs mass ratios, the composite exhibited significantly improved specific capacity (up to 10611 mAh/g carbon under 100 mAh/g carbon ), rate capability (up to 9598 mAh/g carbon under 500 mAh/g carbon ) and cyclability than pristine KB, owing to the synergy of KB's abundant surface area for accommodation of discharge products and MWCNTs’ long-range electronic conductivity to guide even and compact deposition of discharge products, and mitigate passivation/clogging of the air cathode surface during discharge. This strategy of using MWCNTs as microscopic cables could also be applied for other commercial materials to construct high-performance and low-cost air cathodes.

Hybrid electrodes, which are made of a physical (electrical double layer) storage component and a chemical (battery-type) material, have shown great potential in battery–supercapacitor hybrid (BSH) devices. Here, we present an approach which is based on electrophoretic deposition (EPD) as a means of assembling a binder-free, high-performance BSH device. Ketjenblack (KB) used as the physical storage material and NiCo2O4 (NCO) as the chemical storage compound were dispersed in the presence of Ni2+. The latter assisted in positively charging the surface of both materials and thus resulted in similar deposition rates by EPD on nickel foam (NF). This enabled us to nicely control the NCO to KB ratio in the hybrid electrode and optimize its performance. In this binder-free hybrid electrode, the KB chains served as a fast electron path providing high conductivity for the NCO electroactive material. More importantly, the KB chains could remain in contact with NCO coping with the mechanical stress during the electrochemical reaction. As a result, the optimized hybrid electrode showed high specific capacity (460 C g–1 at 1 A g–1) and excellent cycling performance (82.5% retention after 15 000 cycles). The BSH device was assembled with the hybrid electrode (NF/NCO-KB) as positive and activated carbon as negative electrodes, and exhibited high energy density of 53.0 Wh kg–1 at power density of 746 W kg–1 and outstanding cycling performance of 88.6% retention after 10 000 cycles.

The sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been one of the most majority bottlenecks of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. It is extremely desirable but challenging to explore low cost, highly active, stable catalysts toward ORR to replace commercial Pt/C catalysts. Herein, a novel hybrid system consisting of trace copper and bi-nonmetallic (N/S) modified the commercial ketjenblack (KB) carbon (Cu–NS–C) has been successfully fabricated by a pyrolysis of Cu–MOF/KB and thiourea to transform crystalline Cu/Cu 2 O nanoparticles into copper sulfide nanoparticles and the subsequent acid leaching. The optimized Cu–NS–C delivers a half-wave potential of 0.81 V versus RHE and a limiting-current density of 5.0 mA cm −2 , which is next to those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, this catalyst demonstrates much better durability and methanol tolerance than Pt/C catalyst.

The development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts for HER has been received extensive attention. Among these, minimizing the Pt usage and promoting its utilization efficiency are essential prerequisites for a future hydrogen economy. Herein, we use a new ε-Keggin-type polyoxometalate-based metal–organic framework H3[Zn4(bimb)2][PMoV8MoVI4O40]·12H2O (POMOF-1) as a support to load a low amount of ultrasmall Pt nanoparticles (NPs), and then mix this material with Ketjenblack carbon (KB) to form a new composite catalyst (Pt@POMOF-1/KB). This composite catalyst shows a low Pt loading amount of 0.43 wt% and the average size of the Pt NPs is 1.5 nm. Pt@POMOF-1/KB exhibits a remarkable HER performance in 0.5 M H2SO4. It only requires an overpotential to of 23 mV to observe a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is superior to that of 20% Pt/C. The mass activity of Pt@POMOF-1/KB is almost 100 and 37 times that of 20% Pt/C at overpotentials of 50 and 100 mV, respectively, as a consequence of the very low noble-metal loading. This result may provide an approach to meet the cost requirements for large-scale applications.

In this work, an ultrasensitive gallic acid (GA) electrochemical sensor was developed by using β-cyclodextrin-encapsulated and Ketjenblack carbon-embedded helical multi-walled carbon nanotubes (β-CD/HMCT/KC) networks, which were prepared by using ultrasound assisted one-pot strategy. β-CD not only achieved the good adsorption and enrichment of GA through host-guest inclusion interactions but also promoted the uniform dispersion of HMCT and KC. HMCT facilitated the rapid electron transport through continuous tube-wall bending pathways, and the unique helical morphology further increased the surface corrugation, significantly enhancing the density of active sites. KC with branched-chain morphology enabled the formation of branched-chain-like conductive carbon networks. The electrochemical performance of β-CD/HMCT/KC modified sensor was performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The multifunctional integration of β-CD/HMCT/KC enhanced the sensitivity of GA electrochemical analysis (Limit of detection: 8.8 nM, limit of quantification: 29.33 nM, linear concentration range: 0.5–20 μM). The practical evaluation of GA detection in food samples (teas and fruit juices) showed good recoveries of 96.03–104.37 % and low relative standard deviations of 2.30 %–4.57 %.
