In this study, the pineapple peel treated with different degrees of delignification was used to isolate lignocellulose nanocrystals (LCNC) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Controlling delignification treatments can adjust the morphology and structure of pineapple peel and the retention of lignin, thereby achieving the regulation of the properties of LCNC, such as morphology, crystallinity, hydrophobicity and rheological properties. The results of atomic force microscope (AFM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), UV/visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of lignin in LCNC, showing a rod-like structure with the distribution of lignin. Regulating delignification of pineapple peel can adjust the average length (310 ∼ 460 nm), diameter (19 ∼ 38 nm), crystallinity (61% ∼ 71%) and hydrophobicity (contact angle 84° ∼ 60°) of the obtained LCNC by acid hydrolysis, and influence the performance of its stabilized Pickering emulsions. This work confirms that the properties of LCNC can be controlled through adjusting delignification degree, possessing great significance for the high value utilization of lignocellulosic agricultural waste.

To enhance the yield of biohydrogen production from corn straw, a methodology involving the synthesis of deep eutectic solvent (DES) using hydrogen bond acceptor [Emim][OAc] and hydrogen bond donor 1,4-butanediol and its application in the pretreatment was investigated. DES was prepared by mixing [Emim][OAc] and 1,4-butanediol solution with a concentration of 70% at a ratio of 4.7:100 (g:mL), followed by heating and stirring at 60 °C for 30 min. The optimal conditions for DES pretreatment were as follows: the liquid-solid ratio of the volume of DES to the mass of corn straw was 50:1 (mL:g), and the reaction temperature and reaction time were 121 °C and 1 h, respectively. The hydrogen yield was approximately 138.3 mL/g of corn straw. The comprehensive analysis outcomes derived from chemical analysis, FT-IR, 13 C NMR, XRD, TGA, and BET demonstrated that the hydrogen bonds within lignocellulose, the ester bonds between hemicellulose and lignin, the β -1,4 glycosidic bonds of cellulose and hemicellulose, and the β - O -4 bonds of lignin were disrupted, leading to the elimination of 86.79% of hemicellulose and 74.69% of lignin, thereby increasing the yield of hydrogen production from corn straw by 591.5%. The pretreatment efficacy of DES prepared from the fourth recycled [Emim][OAc] on corn straw did not deteriorate conspicuously. This study can offer a theoretical foundation for efficient hydrogen production from lignocellulosic biomass pretreated by DES.

Olefins are important feedstocks in the production of fuels and many useful chemicals. Herein, cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) was first synthesized by an environmentally friendly evaporation method and it exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the production of olefins by the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of ketones that can be derived from lignocellulose. On the basis of the characterization results, the excellent catalytic performance of CoMoO4 was attributed to its larger specific surface area, better pore structure, higher oxygen vacancy (or Mo5+ species) concentration, higher acid strength and higher concentration of acid sites. Under the optimized reaction conditions, 4-heptanone was almost completely converted to heptene, and a high carbon yield of heptene (96%) was achieved over a CoMoO4 catalyst with a Co/Mo atomic ratio of 0.8 (denoted as CoMoO4-0.8). The CoMoO4 catalyst is also active for the selective HDO of other lignocellulosic ketones (such as acetone, butanone, 2-pentanone, 3-pentanone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, 5-nonanone and acetophenone) to their corresponding olefins.

AimsTo determine the optimum conditions for extracting Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) from Eucommia ulmoides leaves during fermentation by Coprinellus disseminatus. At the same time, the EUG characteristics were characterized. Methods and resultsThe ability of C. disseminatus to secrete degrading enzymes, including enzyme activity and lignocellulose content, was observed by culturing C. disseminatus on a medium with different formulations. Based on the optimal formula, the fermentation conditions were determined by an orthogonal test and EUG was extracted. After that, the characteristic parameters of EUG were determined by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, SEM, POM, DSC, XRD and GPC. The results showed that the lignin and hemicellulose contents in Eucommia leaves decreased significantly with the increase of fermentation days, and C. disseminatus mediated fermentation had an obvious damage effect on the tissue of Eucommia leaves. At the same time, At the same time, xylan can be used as an initiator to induce the expression of degradation-related enzymes. The extraction yield of EUG from Eucommia ulmoides leaves after fermentation was 3.06%, which was significantly improved. The optimum fermentation conditions were 4% inoculum, 28°C fermentation temperature, and pH = 5. The results of infrared FT-IR and 1H-NMR showed that the extract had typical characteristics of EUG, and the surface and quenching part of the EUG were smooth, as observed by SEM. In addition, DSC and XRD analysis show that there are two crystal types, α and β, in the crystallization process of molten EUG. The main crystallization type of EUG extracted from fermented leaves was β type.ConclusionThe ability of C. disseminatus to produce degrading enzymes can effectively improve the extraction rate of EUG under optimal fermentation process. The method can maintain the integrity of gutta-percha better. EUG has the characteristics of good crystallinity, many β crystal types and high molecular weight.

The adoption of green lignocellulose-derived carbon to modify semiconductors for efficient photocatalysis is highly important, and the key component of lignocellulose urgently needs to be defined since lignocellulose is composed of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. In this study, poplar wood-derived carbon-modified BiOBr (BiOBr/PWC) was facilely constructed via a hydrothermal method for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction under visible light. BiOBr/PWC has a distinctive flower-like morphology with a relatively high surface area, and enables efficient charge carrier separation. The Cr(VI) reduction rate over BiOBr/PWC dramatically improves to 95 % in comparison with those over BiOBr (6 %) and PWC (14 %). Poplar lignin-, cellulose-, and hemicellulose-derived carbon were separately integrated with BiOBr for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction, and the reduction rates are 87 %, 62 %, and 62 %, respectively. Poplar lignin-derived carbon possesses the maximum degree of graphitization, and the corresponding BiOBr/carbon has an open pore structure, which is more conducive to charge carrier transmission and light absorption. Thus, lignin in poplar wood plays a dominant role in achieving the efficient photocatalysis of BiOBr/PWC. This work is the first to reveal the role of components in lignocellulose-derived carbon for photocatalysis, which will greatly advance the development of biochar-based photocatalysts.

Practical production of conductive paper requires the balancing of high electrical conductance, thermal stability and tensile modulus, with cost effectiveness. By utilizing lignocellulose (3.85 ± 0.35% and 17.17 ± 0.62% lignin contents) and graphite as starting materials, a lignocellulose/reduced graphene oxide (LRGO) composite conductive paper is successfully fabricated. The free-standing LRGO paper has a low sheet resistance of 506 ± 34 Ω/sq with a graphene derivative content of ~ 20 wt%. Also high T onset (312 °C) and T 95 (251 °C) are observed, along with a tensile modulus up to 8.36 GPa if ten additional passes of microfluidization are used. Moreover, LRGO paper was used to make active electrodes for a supercapacitor that achieved a specific capacitance of 77.0 F/g. There has been minimal reporting of applying lignocellulose in conductive paper production, so this new method is anticipated to pave the way for developing advanced materials derived from low cost biomass. Gas hydrate is considered to be a highly efficient natural gas storage technology, which has a broad outlook and great potential. In this work, lignocellulose fiber from paper was chosen as a carrier for enhanced hydrate formation based on availability and universality, and the experiments of lignocellulose fiber-promoted hydrate were carried out at about 275.2 K and 6 MPa by a novel experimental apparatus including 6 parallel high-pressure gas storage reactors. When the mass ratio for water and paper ( R w) was saturated, the lignocellulose fiber in printed paper exhibited the highest CH 4 uptake, and its maximum CH 4 uptake reached 1.396 mmol/g when R w = 3.0. Capillary-driven water suction in lignocellulose fibers played a dominant role during hydrate formation. Besides, the synergistic effect of lignocellulose fibers and SDS on CH 4 hydrate formation was also studied. The induction time of CH 4 hydrate was minimized to less than 10 min, the time in 300 ppm SDS was only 0.65 min. The CH 4 uptake was 1.567 mmol/g, and max rate of CH 4 uptake was 0.152 mmol/g/min with 500 ppm SDS, which were 13.6 % and 3.75 times higher than that of without SDS respectively. It was attributed to the surface of the lignocellulose fibers providing nucleation sites for CH 4 hydrate formation, while SDS reduces the surface tension of water. This work is promised to provide a more flexible solution for hydrate storage and utilization.

To reveal the action mechanisms of microwave intensification and solvent properties in biorefinery, five typical green solvents (including glycerol (GO), ethyl lactate (EL), γ-valerolactone (GVL), deep eutectic solvents (DES) and water as a control) were selected to conduct biomass pretreatment under microwave irradiation. The pretreatment experiments of different solvents showed that microwave-assisted DES pretreatment had a superior degree of separation (DOS) of 8.64 with higher cellulose retention (88.64%) and lignin removal efficiencies (89.75%). By comprehensively considering the separation efficiencies of three major components in biomass, K-T parameters, and dielectric loss of different solvents, the synergism between microwave and solvents was a key factor in biomass pretreatment, which was further verified by comparative analysis with biomass pretreatment by conventional heating (CH). DES with high dielectric loss could quickly convert microwave energy into thermal energy, causing the effective deconstruction of lignocellulose (observed by SEM) and promoting the separation of three major components. This kind of intensification effect of microwaves contributed to the mild pretreatment process with a lower severity factor ( R 0 ) and led to a decrease of energy consumption by 31.56% relative to conventional heating. Benefitting from the excellent separation effect by DES pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification of 89.13% and lignin recovery rates of 67.76% were achieved with a total potential utilization efficiency of 67.98%, but the lignin condensation needed to be concerned.

Reductive catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose is a promising biorefinery strategy that combines biomass fractionation with lignin depolymerization. Herein, we report a layered copper silicate nanotube (RCuSNT) catalyst, which exhibits enhanced performance toward reductive fractionation of lignocellulose. The phenolic monomers obtained from lignin are close to the theoretical maximum yields (22.5 wt% for softwoods and 38.5 wt% for hardwoods), with high selectivity for propyl and propanol end-chain phenolic compounds. The result indicates that lignin is successfully deconstructed while cellulose and hemicellulose are retained essentially intact (88.4 wt%). The catalyst shows stability in recovery experiments, which is attributed to the immobilization of copper species by the leaf silicate. Moreover, a series of lignin model compounds and isotope-labeled reactions clarify the mechanism of C–O bond scission over RCuSNTs. This work provides a significant benchmark for the rational development of inexpensive metal catalysts in reductive catalytic fractionation systems for lignin valorization.

Lignocellulose-based nanomaterials were universally acknowledged as a kind of natural biopolymer and emerging multifunctional nanomaterial. However, the poor dispersion of lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) would limit their full potential applications. In this work, we reported a simple and industrially viable strategy for the preparation of well-dispersed and thermostable LCNFs from wheat straw (WS) without chemical modification. Diols (ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, and 1,4-butanediol) were employed to swell and crush lignocellulose fibers by screw extrusion. LCNFs could be easily obtained by colloid milling using 0.15% w/w sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The yield of LCNFs was more than 65.2%. The dispersion stability of LCNFs was assessed using an ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer (UV–vis). Thermal stability of LCNFs was evaluated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Solvatochromic properties of the swollen solvents were characterized by solvatochromic parameters. The LCNFs were also characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results confirmed that LCNFs prepared through this process had potential advanced applications.

EG capping suppresses lignin condensation, yielding highly reactive lignin. • BL–ESO bio-adhesive exhibits 2.11 MPa strength and NIR self-healing properties. • LCNF boosts PVA film strength by 2.24-fold and enables UV-shielding. • Achieving total valorization of lignocellulose into functional materials. Traditional deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatments are often hindered by lignin condensation and solvent recycling challenges. To address these limitations, a ternary choline chloride–malic acid–ethylene glycol (ChCl–MA–EG) DES system is designed for total–component valorization of wheat straw. By integrating acidic cleavage with nucleophilic stabilization, this system selectively cleaves lignin–carbohydrate linkages while suppressing lignin condensation, enabling effective separation into a liquor fraction (lignin and hemicellulose) and solid residue (cellulose). The resulting DES black liquor can be directly copolymerized with epoxidized soybean oil to fabricate a bio–adhesive, exhibiting exceptional photothermal conversion and self–healing capabilities. Simultaneously, the cellulose–rich residue is processed into lignin–retaining cellulose nanofibers (LCNF, ∼20 nm). By incorporating 10% (mass) LCNF into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix, the resulting composite film shows a boosted mechanical strength of 56.35 MPa and improved UV–blocking capability. This approach mitigates lignin condensation and solvent recovery challenges, establishing a green biorefinery process for upgrading agricultural waste into value–added functional materials. Applying cellulose paper on the triboelectric material is the trend of developing eco-friendly triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). However, the researchers always pay attention to improve the triboelectric property of cellulose paper by the grafting of functional groups and the introduction of conductive or high dielectric property materials, while neglecting the effects of lignocellulose fiber composition including hemicellulose and lignin. In this work, the contents of hemicellulose and lignin were adjusted by sodium hydroxide and sodium chlorite, respectively; and the effects of hemicellulose and lignin on the triboelectric performance of cellulose paper were evaluated. The results showed that the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) and short-circuit current (I SC ) changed slightly with increasing hemicellulose contents, while the V OC and I SC values increased from 49.9 ± 0.5 V to 94.7 ± 0.7 V and 2.3 ± 0.04 μA to 4.3 ± 0.03 μA in the range of lignin contents from 0.8 ± 0.1 % to 8.9 ± 0.2 % because lignin can make the surface potential of cellulose paper more positive. The triboelectric performance was further demonstrated by driving 50 commercial LEDs and harvesting energy from human motion. This work provides a new idea for improving the triboelectric performance of cellulose paper.
