Fe3O4@m-ZrO2@Ag ternary magnetic nanocomposites for sensitive SERS sensing and photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) and organic dyes

Xinyue Wang,Huan Cheng,Yuanzhi Min,Xian Li,Lijun You,Jumei Li

In this study, a crystalline mesoporous ZrO 2 interlayer allowing for enrichment capability and photocatalytic activity was introduced to develop a novel magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /m-ZrO 2 /Ag nanocomposite combined with excellent SERS activity and photocatalytic property. The coverage of Ag nanoparticles on Fe 3 O 4 /m-ZrO 2 /Ag was well controlled to tune their SERS sensitivity by varying the feed amount of AgNO 3 . Several characterization methods were utilized to investigate their composition, morphology and crystal structure. The SERS experiments demonstrated Fe 3 O 4 /m-ZrO 2 /Ag nanocomposites possessed markedly SERS sensitivity, exceptional signal reproducibility and excellent storing stability. They could sense R6G and Cr (VI) at the concentrations of 10 −9 and 5 × 10 −8  M, respectively. Beyond that, the Fe 3 O 4 /m-ZrO 2 /Ag nanocomposites effectively accomplished recyclable detecting R6G and Cr (VI) in 5 cycles through facile photocatalytic removal of pollutants under UV irradiation. Altogether, the novel Fe 3 O 4 /m-ZrO 2 /Ag nanocomposites prepared in this study have high SERS sensitivity and good photocatalytic performance, which is of great significance for environmental detection and ecological restoration.

Synergy induced by physical mixing m-ZrO2 and α-Ga2O3 for effective conversion of syngas to light olefins

Peng Zhang,Fangfang Li,Xuefang Yao,Pengze Zhang,Yukai Wu,Mengmeng Xi,Fanhui Meng,Lihua Kang,Mingyuan Zhu

The GaZrO x solid solution has been recently employed in OX-ZEO bifunctional catalysts for efficient conversion of syngas to light olefins, but it remains challenging to identify the specific contributions of Zr and Ga and to understand the detailed reaction mechanisms due to the structural complexity. To address this complexity and elucidate the active sites over the Zr-Ga oxide system, this study presents a catalyst designed by physical mixing ZrO 2 with different crystalline phases ( m -ZrO 2 & t -ZrO 2 ) and α -Ga 2 O 3 . The physical mixture of m -ZrO 2 and α -Ga 2 O 3 achieves a high CO conversion of 39.1 %, with light olefins selectivity of 87.3% among hydrocarbons after combined with SAPO-34, surpassing the performance of physical mixture of t -ZrO 2 and/or α -Ga 2 O 3 with SAPO-34. Combining the various characterizations and DFT calculations, we have confirmed that m -ZrO 2 site, enriched with oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups, is essential for CO adsorption and HCOO* intermediate formation, while the α -Ga 2 O 3 site plays a key role in the dissociation of H 2 . Furthermore, the electron transfer from m -ZrO 2 to α -Ga 2 O 3 in their mixture is more efficient than in a physically mixed t -ZrO 2 and α -Ga 2 O 3 . This accelerates the H 2 dissociation and boosts the spillover of hydrogen from α -Ga 2 O 3 to m -ZrO 2 , leading to the formation of more CH 3 O* intermediates and higher light olefins yield when combined with SAPO-34.

Controllable Oxidation of ZrS2 to Prepare High-κ, Single-Crystal m-ZrO2 for 2D Electronics

Yuanyuan Jin,Jian Sun,Ling Zhang,Junqiang Yang,Yangwu Wu,Bingying You,Xiao Liu,Kai Leng,Song Liu

High-κ materials that exhibit large permittivity and band gaps are needed as gate dielectrics to enhance capacitance and prevent leakage current in downsized technology nodes. Among these, monoclinic ZrO 2 (m-ZrO 2 ) shows good potential because of its inertness and high-κ with respect to SiO 2 , but a method to produce ultrathin single crystal is lacking. Here, the controllable preparation of ultrathin m-ZrO 2 single crystals via the in situ thermal oxidation of ZrS 2 is achieved. As-grown m-ZrO 2 presents an equivalent oxide thickness of ≈0.29 nm, a high dielectric constant of ≈19, and a breakdown voltage ( E BD ) of ≈7.22 MV cm −1 . MoS 2 field effect transistor (FET) by using m-ZrO 2 as a dielectric layer shows comparable mobility to that using SiO 2 dielectric. The ultraclean interface of m-ZrO 2 /MoS 2 and high crystalline quality of m-ZrO 2 lead to negligible hysteresis in transfer curves. Single crystal m-ZrO 2 dielectric shows potential application in digital complementary metal oxidesemiconductor (CMOS) logic FET.

Support size engineering boosts oxide-support interaction over In2O3/m-ZrO2 for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Yifu Wang,Junwu Mou,Biao Gao,Chaianansutcharit Soamwadee,Kuchonthara Prapan,Limin Guo

The hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol is a promising strategy for renewable carbon utilization, where indium oxide loaded zirconia catalysts have been extensively studied. However, the influence of monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO 2 ) support size on the structure-activity relationship remains insufficiently understood. Here, we systematically investigate the size effect of m-ZrO 2 supports on the structure, surface chemistry, and catalytic performance of In 2 O 3 /m-ZrO 2 catalysts. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that an optimal ZrO 2 grain size (∼13 nm) is associated with strengthened In 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 interaction and an increased concentration of thermally induced oxygen vacancies. In-situ DRIFTS confirms a formate-mediated pathway and enhanced formate intermediates conversion. Consequently, 5 %In/Zr-600 exhibits the highest methanol yield (0.43 g MeOH g cat −1 h −1 ). In comparison, smaller supports suppress methanol selectivity due to weak interfacial interaction, while larger supports promote In 2 O 3 crystallization and cause surface area loss, limiting activity and stability. These findings provide insight into how support grain size influences metal oxide and support interactions and catalytic behavior within the In 2 O 3 /m-ZrO 2 system.

Empowering ultrahigh solar reflectivity in glass-ceramics through m-ZrO2 nanotwins for efficient building radiative cooling

Jieyan Zhao,Wenjie Luo,Xuanlin Pan,Qing Meng,Huakang Zhang,Jing Xia,Xiangling Ren,Lei Kang,Qian Wan,Ning Qin,Jiangtao Li

Porous ceramic based radiative cooling materials offers an energy-efficient solution for buildings cooling. Yet inter-connected micropores in those materials not only weaken their mechanical strength and resistance to pollutant penetration, but also inhibit the compatibility with structural colors. Herein, ultra-high reflective SiO 2 -ZrO 2 glass-ceramics are prepared by introducing lamellar m-ZrO 2 nanotwins into SiO 2 matrix. m-ZrO 2 nanotwins are proven effective in enhancing the reflection of sunlight, which provides an alternative to the Mie scattering of pores. The glass-ceramics exhibit a solar reflectivity of 0.98 at a low porosity of 17.62%, while maintaining excellent mechanical properties. Based on self-assembly and an annealing process, long-range ordered SiO 2 microspheres arrays are deposited to the surface of the glass-ceramics, yielding structural colors and elevated reflectivity up to 0.99. The green structural colored glass-ceramics with highest reflectivity achieve 3.97 ℃ daytime cooling performance under solar irradiation of 672   W   m -2 . When used as the envelope of a typical four-story midrise apartment building, such glass-ceramics demonstrate cooling energy saving by at least 15% and the highest annual electricity cost saving of 44,136 CNY (6,199 USD) across 32 representative cities in China. The developed SiO 2 -ZrO 2 glass-ceramics hold tremendous potential for use in advanced radiative cooling, particularly of buildings.

Tuning the crystallite size of monoclinic ZrO2 to reveal critical roles of surface defects on m–ZrO2 catalyst for direct synthesis of isobutene from syngas

Xuemei Wu,Minghui Tan,Bing Xu,Shengying Zhao,Qingxiang Ma,Yingluo He,Chunyang Zeng,Guohui Yang,Noritatsu Tsubaki,Yisheng Tan

The effects of crystallite size on the physicochemical properties and surface defects of pure monoclinic ZrO 2 catalysts for isobutene synthesis were studied. We prepared a series of monoclinic ZrO 2 catalysts with different crystallite size by changing calcination temperature and evaluated their catalytic performance for isobutene synthesis from syngas. ZrO 2 with small crystalline size showed higher CO conversion and isobutene selectivity, while samples with large crystalline size preferred to form dimethyl ether (DME) instead of hydrocarbons, much less to isobutene. Oxygen defects (O Defects ) analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provided evidence that more O Defects occupied on the surface of ZrO 2 catalysts with smaller crystalline size. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance (UV–vis DRS) confirmed the presence of high concentration of surface defects and Zr 3+ on m -ZrO 2 -5.9 sample, respectively. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy ( in situ DRIFTS) analysis indicated that the adsorption strength of formed formate species on catalyst reduced as the crystalline size decreased. These results suggested that surface defects were responsible for CO activation and further influenced the adsorption strength of surface species, and thus the products distribution changed. This study provides an in-depth insight for active sites regulation of ZrO 2 catalyst in CO hydrogenation reaction.
