A new voltammetric sensor, simultaneous electropolymerization of L-Citrulline (L-Cit) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was built for the first time. It was used to construct this sensor for quantification of these important pesticides and sensitive determination of metribuzin. The proposed metribuzin sensor displays excellent performance with wide linear range (3.0 × 10−8 ~ 1.0 × 10−6 mol L−1), ultralow detection limit of 10 nM (S/N = 3), and favourable specificity. Also, the sensor was applied for determination of metribuzin in the real samples, the satisfying results are achieved. The results imply that the proposed sensor can be potentially used for the environmental pollution science and environmental analytical chemistry.

The electro-polymerization of l -Norvaline was investigated for the first time on glassy carbon electrode. The polymeric conditions and mechanism were discussed in detail. The electrochemical behaviors of metribuzin were studied systematically at this sensor and the dynamic parameters of electrode process were calculated. This electrochemical sensor, fabricated simply and very easy surface update, showed good response for metribuzin with a wide linear range from 6.43 × 10 − 3 to 1.07 μg/mL and a low detection limit of 2.14 × 10 − 3 μg/mL (S/N = 3). The proposed method was successfully applied to determine metribuzin in soil sample with satisfactory results. This work promoted the potential applications of amino acid materials in electrochemical sensors.

The reaction kinetics and degradation mechanisms of the herbicides metribuzin (MTZ) and metamitron (MTT) were evaluated during conventional and tourmaline-catalyzed ozonation processes. The tourmaline catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The reactivities of these two herbicides with ozone (O 3 ) are low due to their refractory characteristics, so catalytic ozonation is an ideal way to effectively degrade them. The effects of catalyst dosage, pH, temperature and ozone concentration on catalytic degradation of MTZ and MTT were investigated. Based on the results from quenching experiments and calculation of second-order rate constants ( k O3, MTZ (4.82 ± 0.42 M −1 s −1 ), k O3, MTT (13.35 ± 0.62 M −1 s −1 ) and k •OH, MTT ((6.90 ± 0.51) × 10 9 M −1 s −1 )), it was found that oxidation of the pollutants was mediated by decomposition of O 3 to produce • OH. Twelve MTZ degradation products and five MTT degradation products were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and the reaction mechanisms were analyzed. In addition, the potential toxicities of the derivatives formed during catalytic ozonation were examined. The degradation products of the two pollutants exhibited different toxicity profiles. The environmental-friendliness and efficient catalytic properties of tourmaline suggest that it has great potential as a heterogenous and green catalyst.

This study employed KOH-modified beet molasses biochar (MBCK) for the effective removal of metribuzin (MB) from wastewater. The adsorption behavior and mechanisms were investigated through the application of kinetic and isotherm models, thermodynamic analyses, a range of characterization techniques (SEM, BET N₂, FTIR, XPS, etc.), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicate that MBCK achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 79.45 mg/g and a removal efficiency of 99.31% within 1 h. Characterization analyses revealed that KOH modification significantly increased the biochar's specific surface area (up to 3691.710 m 2 /g), which is 4.17 times that of the unmodified sample. MBCK maintained high removal efficiency (> 98%) over a wide pH range (3−11) and in various real water matrices (lake, river, rain, and tap water), demonstrating excellent environmental adaptability and stability. Furthermore, MBCK was effectively regenerated via ethanol desorption, retaining 94.57% of its removal efficiency after three adsorption–desorption cycles, highlighting its sustainable adsorption potential. Moreover, MBCK maintains a considerable adsorption capacity for atrazine while removing metribuzin, further enhancing its potential for practical wastewater treatment applications. The primary contributor to the adsorption of metribuzin by MBCK is pore filling, followed by electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π–π stacking. Overall, this study provides a novel approach for the high-value utilization of beet molasses and an eco-friendly and facile strategy for efficiently removing pesticides such as metribuzin from real water environments.

This study novelly reported the degradation kinetics and the correlated formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) of metribuzin, a widely used herbicide that contains nitrogen, in the UV/chlorine process. The influencing factors, including chlorine dosage, pH, and the presence of chloride (Cl−) and natural organic matter (NOM, simulated using humic acid (HA)) in water for metribuzin degradation were evaluated. The pseudo-first-order rate constant (kobs) of metribuzin during UV/chlorination was calculated to be 0.0986 min−1, which was 6.90 times higher than those of UV-alone and 1.53 times greater than that of chlorine-alone. The kobs increased with increasing chlorine dosage and decreasing pH value. Cl− could promote the degradation of metribuzin, while the content of metribuzin changed non-monotonically with HA concentration. Through the establishment of the kinetic model, the kobs of HO• with metribuzin was calculated to be 5.6 × 109 M−1 s−1, and HO• contributed to 20% of metribuzine degradation. The possible degradation pathways of metribuzin in the UV/chlorine process were proposed. In the sequential chlorine disinfection process, trichloromethane (TCM) was the dominant DBP in non-bromine water, while the content of tribromomethane (TBM) raised with increasing molar ratio of bromine to chlorine, which has to be carefully controlled in drinking water treatment plants to provide safe drinking water to the public.

Abstract Understanding charge transfer at the metal−support interface is crucial for optimizing the electrochemical activity of metal sites. Herein, a series of silver nanoparticles (Ag NP)/heteroatom-doped graphene composites (Ag/G-X, where X = N, P, or S) was designed and prepared. Ag/G-S with an average Ag NP size of 4.5 ± 0.7 nm enables rapid electron transfer required for two-electron metribuzin (MB) electroreduction. The Ag/G-S modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) delivers better MB sensing performance than Ag/G-N/GCE and Ag/G-P/GCE, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.53 ng mL−1 and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.77 ng mL−1, with a sensitivity of 44.612 μA mL μg−1 cm−2. The Ag/G-S/GCE displays a linear range of 0.001−16 μg mL−1 (R2 = 0.99), along with stability over 2000 cyclic voltammetry cycles, reproducibility beyond 30 days, anti-interference capability against common inorganic ions and a recovery rate of 94.1% to 101.84% in real samples. Theoretical analysis reveals that Ag/G-X features an interfacial chemical bonding consisting of σ-type donation and d-π* back-donation, which governs charge transfer from Ag to the G-X substrate. Furthermore, the S-guided interfacial orbital interaction is more beneficial than that guided by N and P in regulating the d-band center of Ag NPs, thereby endowing the exposed Ag sites with optimized adsorption energetics for key intermediates in the MB reduction. This work demonstrates the role of interfacial chemical bonding-driven charge transfer in Ag/G-X for the two-electron electrochemical reduction of MB on Ag NP surfaces, and offers a strategy for developing Ag-based sensing nanomaterials.

As one of the triazine herbicides with widespread usage in agriculture, metribuzin exerted nonnegligible hazardous effects on plants via excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species and destruction of antioxidant enzymes, but the underlying harmful mechanism of metribuzin-induced oxidative damage to plants has never been exploited. Here, Arabidopsis thaliana glutathione reductase 2 (AtGR2) was employed as the biomarker to evaluate the adverse impacts of metribuzin on plants. The fluorescence intensity of AtGR2 was decreased based on the static quenching mechanism with the prediction of a single binding site toward metribuzin, and the complex formation was presumed to be mainly impelled by hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces from the negative Δ H and Δ S . In addition, the loosened and unfolded skeleton of AtGR2 along with the increased hydrophilicity around the tryptophan residues were investigated. Besides, the glutathione reductase activity of AtGR2 was also destroyed due to structural and conformational changes. At last, the severe inhibiting growth of Arabidopsis seedling roots was discovered under metribuzin exposure. Hence, the evaluation of the molecular interaction mechanism of AtGR2 with metribuzin will establish valuable assessments of the toxic effects of metribuzin on plants.

Since 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) was discovered in the 1940s, 2,4-D and its derivatives remain among most commonly used herbicides in the world. There have been recent increases in using 2,4-D products in a combination with other herbicides such as metribuzin and acetochlor to control noxious weeds. However, accurate analysis of 2,4-D isooctyl ester remains to be improved due to long analysis time and rapid conversion of the ester to acid (i.e., under-reporting residues). In this work, a simple hydrolysis procedure was introduced to provide a quantitative hydrolytic rate of the ester (>95%) and did not affect the other pH-sensitive compounds. Analysis parameters and sample pretreatments were optimized for improved selectivity and accuracy. The hydrolysis-QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) technique for multidetermination of 2,4-D isooctyl ester, metribuzin, acetochlor, and 2-ethyl-6-methylaniline in corn and soybeans via high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was established. The method had average recoveries of 74–109% with relative standard deviations ≤13.5% and limits of quantifications (LOQs) of 0.05 mg/kg. The terminal residues of these compounds found in real edible matrixes were less than the corresponding LOQs at harvest time. The risk quotients were far below 100%, indicating a low health risk to consumers.
