Comparative study of adsorption polysaccharide on bioactive components and in vitro antioxidant activity of sea buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) pulp oil

Chuan-Guo Ma,Man Zhao,Tian-Lei Si,Xiao-Wei Chen

Sea buckthorn ( Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) pulp oil (SPO) is enriched in natural bioactive components with high pharmacological activities. However, the presence of polysaccharides affects oil quality. Herein, the effects of different polysaccharide-adsorption treatments on the bioactive components and the in vitro antioxidant activities of SPO were investigated. The results demonstrated that the microwave-assisted activated clay (MAE-ACL) adsorption was more effective than the ultrasound-assisted activated clay adsorption for removing polysaccharides. Although the bioactive component levels and antioxidant activities of the SPO were reduced during the adsorption, the squalene content showed no significant difference. By performing principal component and correlation analyses that further evaluated the connection between the bioactive components and the free radical scavenging activities of SPO, MAE-ACL was determined to be the more suitable polysaccharide-adsorption treatment.

Ultrafast synthesis of magnetic hollow carbon nanospheres for the adsorption of quinoline from coking wastewater

Yan Cui,Weiwei Kang,Lei Qin,Jinghong Ma,Xuguang Liu,Yongzhen Yang

Magnetic hollow carbon nanospheres (MHCNSs) with a uniform particle size (40 nm) were ultrafast synthesized in 80 s by a novel microwave-assisted solvothermal method. MHCNSs exhibited an abundant pore structure and high surface activity. Further, their growth mechanism and adsorption property towards quinoline in coking wastewater were discussed. The results indicate that the surfactant P123 plays a template role in inducing the growth of MHCNSs. At 298 K, MHCNSs exhibited a saturated adsorption amount of 155.23 mg g−1 towards quinoline in coking wastewater. Also, they showed excellent regeneration and magnetic separation properties. Through investigating the effect of pH, it was found that MHCNSs realized their best adsorption capacity at pH = 7, and they possessed a relatively stable adsorption capacity in slightly alkaline coking wastewater. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics results demonstrate that the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir–Freundlich are the most suitable models for quinoline adsorption on MHCNSs, and the process belongs to spontaneous and exothermic chemisorption. In general, MHCNSs could be a potential adsorbent for the effective adsorption of quinoline from coking wastewater.

Surfactant-Free Synthesis of Ultrafine Pt Nanoparticles on MoS2 Nanosheets as Bifunctional Catalysts for the Hydrodeoxygenation of Bio-Oil

Qicheng Zhang,Danyun Xu,Junmei Liang,Qianqian Lin,Wenchao Peng,Yang Li,Fengbao Zhang,Xiaobin Fan

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-oil is a crucial step for improving the bio-fuel quality, but developing highly dispersed Pt-based catalysts with high selectivity for target alkanes remains a great challenge. This study presents a fast surfactant-free method to prepare the MoS2-supported Pt catalyst for HDO. Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles with sizes of <5 nm can be readily grown on chemically exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) via the direct microwave-assisted thermal reduction. The obtained Pt NPs/MoS2 composites show excellent catalytic performance in the conversion of palmitic acid, and the best selectivity (also the yield) of hexadecane and pentadecane is 80.56 and 19.43%, respectively.

A functional lignin for heavy metal ions adsorption and wound care dressing

Boyu Du,Wanjing Li,Hongwei Zhu,Jingyu Xu,Qingyu Wang,Xiling Shou,Xing Wang,Jinghui Zhou

Recently, the application of lignin activation by demethylation to improve reactivity and enrich multiple functions has intensively attracted attention. However, it is still challenge up to now due to the low reactivity and complexity of lignin structure. Here, an effective demethylation way was explored by microwave-assisted method for substantially enhancing the hydroxyl (-OH) content and retaining the structure of lignin. Then, the optimum demethylated lignin was used to removal heavy metal ions and promote wound healing, respectively. In detail, for microwave-assisted demethylated poplar lignin (M-DPOL), the contents of phenolic (Ar-OH) and total hydroxyl (Tot-OH) groups reached the maximum for 60 min at 90 °C in DMF with 7.38 and 9.13 mmol/g, respectively. After demethylation, with this M-DPOL as lignin-based adsorbent, the maximum adsorption capacity (Q max ) for Pb 2+ ions reached 104.16 mg/g. Based on the isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models analyses, the chemisorption occurred in monolayer on the surface of M-DPOL, and all adsorption processes were endothermic and spontaneous. Meanwhile, M-DPOL as a wound dressing had excellent antioxidant property, outstanding bactericidal activity and remarkable biocompatibility, suggesting that it did not interfere with cell proliferation. Besides, the wounded rats treated with M-DPOL significantly promoted its formation of re-epithelialization and wound healing of full-thickness skin defects. Overall, microwave-assisted method of demethylated lignin can offer great advantages for heavy metal ions removal and wound care dressing, which facilitates high value application of lignin.
