Thermoelectric generators are one type of energy device widely used for wearable and flexible electronics to provide power to other devices. Organic aerogels with excellent thermoelectric and mechanical properties are promising candidates for such applications, but most of high-performance organic aerogels are made of p-type materials. It remains a great challenge to develop a low-cost and air-stable n-type organic aerogels with comparable performance with the state-of-the-art p-type counterparts to form an efficient thermoelectric power generator. In this study, a novel strategy based on a cellulose nanofiber skeleton is developed to form a high-performance n-type organic aerogel. The obtained n-type organic aerogels possess a Seebeck coefficient of −17 µV K −1 and can combine with their p-type counterparts to form a generator outputting 1 µW with a temperature difference of 50 K. Using the n-type organic aerogels, dual-parameter pressure and temperature sensing with high precision and reproducibility can be realized. The n-type aerogel will find its applications not only for outdoor self-powered systems, but also for human health diagnosis systems with real-time monitoring of multiple parameters without crosstalk.

Flexible thermoelectric materials and devices have gained wide attention due to their capability to stably and directly convert body heat or industrial waste heat into electric energy. Many research and synthetic methods of flexible high-performance p-type thermoelectric materials have made great progress. However, their counterpart flexible n-type organic thermoelectric materials are seldom studied due to the complex synthesis of conductive polymer and poor stability of n-type materials. In this work, bismuth tellurium (Bi2Te3) nanosheets are in situ grown on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) assisted by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). A series of flexible SWCNTs@Bi2Te3 composite films on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes are obtained by vacuum-assisted filtration. The high electrical conductivity of 253.9 S/cm, and a corresponding power factor (PF) of 57.8 μW/m·K2 is obtained at 386 K for SWCNTs@Bi2Te3-0.8 film. Moreover, high electrical conductivity retention of 90% can be maintained after a 300-cycle bending test and no obvious attenuation can be detected after being stored in an Ar atmosphere for 9 months, which exhibits good flexibility and excellent stability of the SWCNTs@Bi2Te3 composite films. This work shows a convenient method to fabricate n-type and flexible thermoelectric composite film and further promotes the practical application of n-type flexible thermoelectric materials.

Organic thermoelectric materials are emerging green energy materials, where n-type candidates are of special interest due to the strong demand for thermoelectric modules with flexibility, light weight, large-area fabrication and ease of processing into versatile shapes. Here, an exciting novel strategy to prepare an n-type single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is proposed by diethylenetriamine (DETA) doping (electron donation) and subsequent CaH2 treatment of the pristine SWCNT (p-type). The Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity for the obtained DETA-CaH2-SWCNT are −41.0 ± 1.5 μV K−1 and 165 ± 10 S cm−1, respectively. A possible mechanism is discussed for the p- to n-type conversion. Then, a multilayered alternating stacked structure is employed to construct thermoelectric modules which realize the conduction layers electrically in series and thermally in parallel. Importantly, the module containing 14 couples displays large open circuit voltages of 62 mV and 125 mV at temperature gradients (ΔT) of 55 K and 110 K, respectively, and a maximum output power of 649 nW at ΔT = 55 K. The strategy proposed here opens a new way to fabricate organic n-type materials and flexible thermoelectric modules. These promising results show great potential in fabrication and applications of flexible and wearable power-conversion devices for next-generation power generators and waste-heat-recovery systems.

Thermocells are attracting growing interest as a promising thermoelectric technology for low-grade heat harvesting. However, the scarcity of high-performance redox couples featuring intrinsically high thermopower ( S e ) and fast redox kinetics hinders thermocells rapid development. Identifying potential intrinsically high-performance redox couples remains a significant challenge. This work introduces a novel n-type copper (Ⅰ/Ⅱ) chloride (CuCl/CuCl 2 ) redox couple with intrinsically high performance. Through tailored electrolyte design, long-term stability was significantly improved by reducing proton concentration to suppress cuprous ion photo-oxidation, while ammonium chloride solvation enhanced cuprous ion solubility. The resulting system achieves a S e value closely aligned with theoretical predictions and exhibits rapid redox kinetics. Consequently, the optimized CuCl/CuCl 2 intrinsic system demonstrated a high S e of 1.52 mV K ‒1 and a record-high normalized power density P max (Δ T ) ‒2 of 0.399 mW m ‒2 K ‒2 , surpassing previously reported intrinsic n-type thermocells and rivaling the performance of p-type pristine 0.4 M ferri/ferrocyanide systems. A prototype module comprising 30 p-n units successfully powered a line of light-emitting diodes or a thermohygrometer. This work introduces a valuable redox couple for further advancing high-performance thermocells and demonstrates a viable strategy for developing novel redox systems.
