As a promising alternative fuel with favorable properties and attractive prospects, the application of n-hexanol in diesel engines has aroused the interest of researchers. This study investigated the effects of mixing with n-hexanol on the morphology, nanostructure, graphitization, and oxidation reactivity of soot particles generated from a diesel engine. Experiments were performed on a turbocharged, four-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine fueled with D100 (neat diesel fuel), DH15 (15% n-hexanol and 85% diesel, v/v), and DH30 (30% n-hexanol and 70% diesel, v/v), respectively. Under the constant torque of 125 N·m, two typical speeds of 1370 and 2150 rpm were selected. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize particulate samples. TEM images showed that DH15 and DH30 particles had smaller primary particle diameters in comparison with neat diesel particles. Moreover, with the increase of the n-hexanol content in mixtures, the interlayer distance increased, indicating a more disordered nanostructure. RS results showed that soot samples generated from n-hexanol/diesel blended fuels had a lower degree of graphitization with larger ID1/IG and AD1/AG and more amorphous carbon with larger ID3/IG and AD3/AG. Based on TGA, it can be deduced that the DH30 soot sample obtained at the engine speed of 1370 rpm was easier to be oxidized in the DPF regeneration process for an 8.23% reduction in Tmax compared with D100 soot. Furthermore, activation energy of soots sampled at the engine speed of 2150 rpm decreased from 123.0 kJ/mol for D100 soot, to 109.6 kJ/mol for DH15 soot, and to 101.2 kJ/mol for DH30 soot, respectively. Regarding the effect of engine speeds on physicochemical characteristics of particles, results showed that the soot has higher oxidation activity under higher engine speed.

The silicone ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-[tri-(trimethylsiloxy)]silylpropyl-imidazolium chloride ([Si 4 mim]Cl), was first used for the construction of the W/O microemulsion system and the [Si 4 mim]Cl/ n -heptane/ n -hexanol/NaCl microemulsion system was applied for palladium extraction for the first time. The stability of [Si 4 mim]Cl/ n -heptane/ n -hexanol/NaCl microemulsion system was characterized by the Turbiscan Lab. For the Pd (II) extraction by the [Si 4 mim]Cl/ n -heptane/ n -hexanol/NaCl microemulsion system, primary parameters (namely, the vibration time, the [Si 4 mim]Cl concentration, the phase ratio and the additives) affecting the palladium extraction was investigated to optimize the process. Under the optimum conditions, the extraction percentage of Pd (II) is up to 98%. Afterwards, the ionic-exchange mechanism of Pd (II) extraction by the [Si 4 mim]Cl/ n -heptane/ n -hexanol/NaCl microemulsion system was confirmed by the Job Method and analyzed by FT-IR spectra. The stripping of Pd (II) from the microemulsion phase was also studied using the NaCl solutions, indicating a high stripping efficiency. At last, the selectivity of the [Si 4 mim]Cl/ n -heptane/ n -hexanol/NaCl microemulsion system to Pd (II) from other metals (Cu (II), Co (II), Ni (II), Fe (III), Al (III) Zn (II), Ce (III), Li (I), Mg (II) and Sn (IV)) was demonstrated to be quite high. The results of our work indicate that the [Si 4 mim]Cl/ n -heptane/ n -hexanol/NaCl microemulsion system is a promising approach for Pd (II) extraction.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized by solution chemistry method with n-hexanol as solvent. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope and X-ray powder diffraction, and the growth kinetics was studied by Lifshitz, Slyozov and Wagner model. The effects of temperature, the addition of deionized water and the concentration of zinc acetate dihydrate on the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles were investigated. The results show that the nucleation and growth of ZnO nanoparticles were promoted by the addition of small amount of water, and the size of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles could be controlled by changing the amount of water addition and the concentration of zinc acetate dihydrate.

BACKGROUND The synthesis of fatty amines via fatty alcohol amination offers a promising avenue for environmentally friendly production, particularly when compared with the methods employing hydrocyanic acid which often involve significant emissions. RESULT This study explores the synthesis of n-hexylamine through one-step amination of n-hexanol utilizing a series of Ru-doped Ni catalysts supported over γ-Al 2 O 3 , achieving 61% n-hexanol yield, 35% dihylamine yield and 3.5% trihylamine yield at the n-hexanol conversion of 99%. CONCLUSION The characterization results of the catalysts revealed a significant interaction between ruthenium and nickel in the bimetallic catalysts, leading to the enhanced reducibility of Ni species and improved metal dispersion. Moreover, ruthenium species were found to play an important role in the dissociation of NH 3 into NH x (x = 1, 2), thereby significantly improving the dehydrogenation process of n-hexanol at Ni sites. The synergistic effect between the two kinds of metal sites emerges as crucial factor for the boosted alcohols amination process. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

The production of high-value-added chemicals from the degradation of real lignin still has been an unresolved issue. In this study, a two-step strategy was proposed to obtain n-hexanol from alkali lignin, and high conversion of alkali lignin and selectivity of n-hexanol were achieved. The deoxygenation performance of the synthesized Ni-HZSM-5 catalyst, modified by Ca, was efficiently improved. At first, through the deoxygenation of alkali lignin via Ni/CaO-HZSM-5, the C–O bonds of the material were broken effectively and 44% degree of deoxygenation (DOD) was obtained. Second, n-hexanol was selectively produced over the Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst from the liquid product obtained by the first step. The efficiency of deoxygenation (DOD) was attained at 71%, and the heat value increased to 51.6 MJ/kg from 19.9 MJ/kg after the two-step strategy. This strategy showed a high catalytic effect to produce n-hexanol from alkali lignin using Ni/CaO-HZSM-5 and Ni/HZSM-5 catalysts and revealed a superior advantage in the hydrodeoxygenation of real lignin to form high additional value chemicals.
