The toxicity of environmental pollutants is often manifested through metabolic disruptions and damage to detoxification organs. However, current understanding is insufficient to explain the physiological response mechanisms of metabolically abnormal fish exposed to secondary pollutants in complex natural environments. This study established a fish model with non-alcoholic fatty liver to evaluate the effects of Zn oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and Zn²⁺ on physiological metabolism using untargeted lipidomics and bioimaging techniques. Nile red and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining indicated that increased Zn levels reduced the number of lipid droplets (LDs) and hepatocyte vacuolization in the livers of groupers. Non-targeted lipidomics, employing an unsupervised K-means clustering algorithm, identified key lipid profiles that differentiated the effects of nZnO and Zn, including TG (16:0/16:1/18:1), PC (18:2/22:6), TG (18:2/18:2/22:6), SM (d18:1/24:1), and TG (16:1/18:1/18:2). The increased content of SM (d18:1/24:0) indicated that fish liver cells internalized nZnO via lipid raft structures on the cell membrane, a process distinct from Zn ion uptake. Moreover, nZnO/Zn treatments significantly activated lipolysis regulation in fish liver experiencing oxidative stress. This study contributed to the use of non-targeted lipidomics to identify differential biomarkers of nZnO and Zn, as well as their compensatory mechanisms in metabolically abnormal fish. These findings provide novel insights into the effects of nanometal exposure on aquatic animal health in complex environments.

Growing concern is about the potential side effects of nanomaterials from food packaging, notably zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO). Previous research revealed that walnut-derived peptides could mitigate this inhibitory effect, but the mechanism involved is unclear. Here, we found that not all peptides have such an effect. Based on the growth inhibition model of Lactobacillus rhamnosus LRa05 induced by nZnO, we assessed the protective effects of various peptides. Notably, four peptides containing charged amino acids (PPKNW, WPPKN, ADIYTE, and WEREEQE) were found to effectively alleviate the growth inhibition phenomenon. We hypothesize that the peptide–nZnO interaction modifies this effect, as confirmed through infrared, Raman, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Our results highlight amide bonds, amino groups, carboxyl groups, and benzene rings as key peptide binding sites on nZnO, with static quenching primarily due to hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. This study elucidates peptide characteristics in nZnO interactions, facilitating a deeper exploration of food matrix–nanocomposite interactions.

Ruminant gastrointestinal fermentation produces a large amount of methane (CH 4 ), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and virulence factors (VFs) pose significant risks to human health. This study utilized metagenomic sequencing to investigate the effect of nZnO-based graphene (nZnOG) and nZnO-based graphene oxide (nZnOGO) on the archaeal community, CH 4 metabolism, ARGs, VFs, and chemotaxis. Results indicated that the levels of zinc in manure were significantly lower in the nZnOG and nZnOGO groups compared to the nano zinc oxide (nZnO) group. The principal component analysis (PCA) of ARGs antibiotic class showed that there was an 80.13% variation between the three groups, suggesting that different zinc sources could influence ARGs related to various classes of antibiotics. The nZnO group exhibited considerably higher resistance levels to antimicrobial peptides and triclosan, in contrast to the nZnOG and nZnOGO groups. The copy number of ARGs followed the order of nZnO > nZnOG > nZnOGO, with a significant difference observed between the nZnO and nZnOGO groups. Moreover, the nZnOGO group displayed a significantly lower copy number of VFs compared to the nZnO group. Furthermore, the nZnOGO group demonstrated inhibition of CH 4 metabolic and chemotaxis pathways, which were associated with reduced transfer of ARGs and VFs. The functional coexistence of ARGs and VFs was driven by the archaeal community, while chemotaxis regulated changes in the archaeal community. These findings suggest that nZnOGO has the potential to inhibit the expression of ARGs and VFs through the inhibition of CH 4 metabolism and chemotaxis pathways. Consequently, feed supplementation with nZnOGO may offer a possible solution for mitigating CH 4 emission and reducing the transmission of ARGs and VFs.

The ocean serves as a repository for various types of artificial nanoparticles. Nanoplastics (NPs) and nano zinc oxide (nZnO), which are frequently employed in personal care products and food packaging materials, are likely simultaneously released and eventually into the ocean with surface runoff. Therefore, their mutual influence and shared destiny in marine environment cannot be ignored. This study examined how nanomaterials interacted and transported through sea sand in various salinity conditions. Results showed that NPs remained dispersed in brine, while nZnO formed homoaggregates. In seawater of 35 practical salinity units (PSU), nZnO formed heteroaggregates with NPs, inhibiting NPs mobility and decreasing the recovered mass percentage (M eff ) from 24.52% to 12.65%. In 3.5 PSU brackish water, nZnO did not significantly aggregate with NPs, and thus barely affected their mobility. However, NPs greatly enhanced nZnO transport with M eff increasing from 14.20% to 25.08%, attributed to the carrier effect of higher mobility NPs. Cotransport from brackish water to seawater was simulated in salinity change experiments and revealed a critical salinity threshold of 10.4 PSU, below which the mobility of NPs was not affected by coexisting nZnO and above which nZnO strongly inhibited NP transport. This study highlights the importance of considering the mutual influence and shared destiny of artificial nanoparticles in the marine environment and how their interaction and cotransport are dependent on changes in seawater salinity.

As one of the most important cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), polyaniline (PANI) has attracted much attention because of its high electrical conductivity, simple synthesis procedure and excellent redox reversibility. However, the morphology of PANI macromolecules and its spontaneous deprotonation properties lead to low capacity and poor cycle stability, which limits its further application. To address these issues, in this work, PANI is in-situ prepared on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) through chemical oxidation polymerization under the presence of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). Compared with pure PANI cathode electrodes, the materials with appropriate amount of CPDs (CPDs/PANI@CC-10) show a high specific discharge capacity of 168 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . Even at a high current density of 10 A g −1 , CPDs/PANI@CC-10 still exhibits a capacity of 102 mAh g −1 , and maintains 94.3 % of the capacity after 10,000 cycles. The profound mechanism investigation reveals that during the charge/discharge cycles, the percentage of protonated N greatly increases due to the addition of CPDs, and new N Zn O bonds are formed, which is beneficial to more stable cycle and larger amount of Zn 2+ storage. This work provides a new route for control the morphology and structure of PANI, which is of significant for its practical application in AZIBs.

Barrier membranes have broad application prospects in guided bone regeneration (GBR), but their use in orthopedic and dental applications is severely limited by the germ-laden microenvironment and soft-hard tissue hierarchy. Thus, a novel nanocomposite multifunctionalized sandwich-like GBR membrane (SGM) with enhanced osteogenic properties and antimicrobial activities was fabricated by the sequential electrospinning of zinc oxide nanoparticle-doped silk fibroin (nZnO/SF), pure SF, and hydroxyapatite nanoparticle-doped SF (nHA/SF). SEM images demonstrated a well-developed porous three-dimensional sandwich-like hierarchical structure, while TEM, FTIR, XRD and EDX analyses confirmed that nZnO and nHA were successfully incorporated into the SF nanofibers. The water contact angle test indicated that the SGM exhibited satisfactory hydrophilicity after integration with nZnO and nHA. In vitro biological experiments proved that SGM had good cytocompatibility with MC3T3-E1 and L929 cells and promoted the differentiation and mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells. Additionally, antibacterial assays suggested that the SGM exhibited noticeable antimicrobial activity in vitro and in vivo . Furthermore, the SGM promoted bone formation in both rat calvarial defect models and periodontal defect models. Consequently, the multifunctionalized nanofibrous SGM, which simultaneously exhibits good biocompatibility and enhanced osteogenic and antimicrobial properties, holds promise for GBR applications.
