A water-stabilized Tb-MOF can be used as a sensitive and selective fluorescence sensor for the detection of oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Ciyang Zhang,Keren Lu,Linrui Li,Wu Lei,Mingzhu Xia,Fengyun Wang

Oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) is a commonly used over-the-counter antibiotic, valued for its potent antibacterial properties. However, the inappropriate and excessive use of OTC can result in the accumulation of the drug in both the environment and human body, causing significant harm to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, the development of a fast and sensitive method for detecting OTC is of great significance. Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (LnMOFs) can effectively excite lanthanide metals to emit long-lifetime, narrow and stable fluorescence based on the antenna effect, but their application in fluorescence sensing is rarely reported. In this work, a strongly fluorescent material Tb-MOF was synthesized by a facile solvothermal method using 1,2,4,5-phenylenetetracarboxylic acid (H 4 btec) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) as organic ligands and lanthanide metal Tb as the luminescent center. Tb-MOF is a stable material in water and shows excellent linearity with OTC in the concentration range of 0 ∼ 70 μM, with low detection limit (0.12 μM) and luminescence color transition from bright green to dark green during the detection process. X-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption and fluorescence lifetime analyses revealed that the fluorescence quenching of Tb-MOF by OTC is caused by the inner filter effect in static quenching. Test strips for OTC detection were successfully prepared using Tb-MOF. These strips are not only low cost and easy to prepare but can also be used as portable sensing devices that can be easily distinguished by the naked eye during OTC testing. This study not only presents a fluorescent probe for the detection of OTC in water but also offers a practical method for converting fluorescent luminescent materials into functional devices for OTC detection.

Performance and mechanism of sycamore flock based biochar in removing oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Hongkui Zhang,Xue Song,Jie Zhang,Yongde Liu,Hailiang Zhao,Junkai Hu,Jihong Zhao

In this study, sycamore flocs (SF), which caused environmental and health problems, were utilized to prepare biochar. SFB 2-900 obtained under the conditions of activation agent K 2 CO 3 , pyrolysis temperature 900℃ and m(K 2 CO 3 ):m(BC) 2 had the strongest adsorption capacity (730 mg/g) for oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC-HCl). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model described the adsorption kinetics and isotherms best. SFB 2-900 exhibited high OTC-HCl adsorption capacity in both higher ionic strength and wide pH range. The theoretical simulation indicated that the closest interaction distance between OTC-HCl and SFB 2-900 was 2.44 Å via π-π stacking configuration. Pore filling, π-π electron donor acceptor (EDA) interaction, H-bonding and electrostatic interactions were also involved in the process of OTC-HCl removal. SFB 2-900 showed great removal efficiency for OTC-HCl in different water matrices and good regeneration ability . This study solved the problems caused by SF, realized waste biomass recycling, and achieved preparing high-efficient adsorbent for antibiotic.

Enhanced visible light photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride using heterojunction BiOBr/TiO2 composites

Caixia Deng,Shuang Li,JiaYu Wang,Yingying Li,Jian Chen,Fenglin Tang,Xiupei Yang

Type II heterojunction photocatalysts were fabricated by compositing BiOBr with TiO 2 , with samples labeled BiOBr/TiO 2 -1 to BiOBr/TiO 2 -5 (the number denotes the mass of TiO 2 in mg used during synthesis). Among these, BiOBr/TiO 2 -2 (containing 100 mg TiO 2 ) exhibited optimal visible-light photocatalytic performance for oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) degradation, achieving 94.38 % removal within 60 min. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) confirmed successful composite formation through the observation of dual lattice spacings (0.28 nm for BiOBr (1   1   0) and 0.35 nm for TiO 2 ). This composite displayed a superior degradation rate constant of 0.04757 min −1 , exceeding those of pristine BiOBr and TiO 2 by factors of 2 and 14, respectively. The enhanced activity was attributed to effective charge separation enabled by the Type II heterojunction structure. Radical trapping experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) as the dominant reactive species. HPLC–MS analysis revealed degradation intermediates, and toxicity assessment predicted progressive detoxification during the process. This study demonstrated that BiOBr/TiO 2 -2 is a stable and efficient photocatalyst with significant potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Sensitive fluorescent detection and micromechanism of Mn-doped CuS probe for oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Ciyang Zhang,Xingen Xie,Shasha Feng,Wu Lei,Mingzhu Xia,Fengyun Wang,Hualai Wang

The novel CuMnS nanoflower fluorescent probe based on Mn-doped CuS was developed to achieve the fluorescence detection of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), the fluorescent sensor has good selectivity and stability. The doping of Mn significantly increased the fluorescence intensity of CuS, which was above 10 times that of CuS. When the predominant species of OTC molecule was zwitterionic OTC +/− at the solution pH of about 5.00, the fluorescence quenching efficiency of CuMnS by OTC reached the highest. Through fluorescence lifetime and UV absorption, the sensing mechanism between CuMnS and OTC was found to be static quenching. Moreover, Multiwfn wavefunction analysis program based on density function theory (DFT) calculation was applied to compare the interactions between different OTC species and CuMnS at different pH, to reveal the micromechanism of fluorescence quenching of CuMnS by OTC from the views of atoms. The molecular surface quantitative analysis and basin analysis of different OTC species demonstrated that the N atom and O atoms of tricarbonylamide moiety of zwitterionic OTC +/− can provide lone pair electrons to form a non-fluorescent ground state complex with CuMnS. Meanwhile, the electrostatic attraction of OTC +/− with negatively charged CuMnS was also beneficial to the interaction, resulting in the effective fluorescence quenching of CuMnS. This work offers a convenient method for sensitively detecting OTC and broadens the application of CuMnS in the field of fluorescence detection.

Enhanced Photo-Fenton Removal of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride via BP/Bi2MoO6 Z-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst

Jian Feng,Xiaohui Li,Xia Ran,Li Wang,Bo Xiao,Rong Li,Guangwei Feng

Fenton oxidation technology utilizing hydrogen peroxide is recognized as an effective method for producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) to facilitate the degradation of antibiotics. However, the requirement for strongly acidic conditions during this process significantly restricts its broader applicability. In this study, we synthesized black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets by exposing the {010} crystal planes and then constructed a 0D/2D BP/Bi2MoO6(PBMO) heterojunction to function as a Fenton catalyst. The PBMO-75 heterojunction exhibited a remarkable increase in photo-Fenton catalytic activity towards oxytetracycline (OTC) under neutral conditions, achieving catalytic efficiencies that were 20 and 8 times greater than those of BP and Bi2MoO6(BMO), respectively. This can be attributed to its strong absorption of visible light, the establishment of an internal electric field (IEF) at the interface, and the implementation of a Z-scheme catalytic mechanism. Additionally, the photo-Fenton system was further improved in OTC degradation through the continuous conversion of Mo6+/Mo5+under visible light irradiation in conjunction with H2O2. Based on ERS, XPS, and active species trapping experiments, we propose a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism for PBMO. This research offers compelling evidence that 0D/2D Z-scheme heterojunctions are promising candidates for the photo-Fenton treatment of antibiotic contaminants.

Adsorption of oxytetracycline hydrochloride by magnetic activated carbon: kinetics, mechanism and site energy distribution analysis

Wenpeng Jia,Lidong Sun,Huanjun Li,Tingjin Lv,Yongzheng Tang,Yongrui Pi

The remove of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) antibiotics from water presents both significant challenges and importance. In this study, magnetic activated carbon (MAC) was synthesized from powdered activated carbon and ferric compounds using an alkaline co-precipitation process. Various characterizations techniques employed to assess the microscopic morphology, pore structure, and surface functionality of the adsorbents. The maximum equilibrium adsorption (qm) of MAC for OTC at temperature of 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40°C were found to be 93, 112, 118, 108, and 117 mg/g, respectively, as determined by the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Thermodynamic and adsorption site energy analyses indicated that the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction at elevated temperatures. During the OTC removal process, both chemisorption and physisorption mechanisms were observed, with adsorption site energies ranging from 4 to 16 kJ/mol, suggesting that chemical adsorption likely played a predominant role. The adsorbent material demonstrated excellent adsorption efficiency and a spontaneous nature, making it a promising candidate for the environmentally friendly treatment of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

Fabrication of lignin-based biochar containing multi-metal ferrite and efficient removal for oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Huiting Lin,Shijie Qiu,Zhihao Wu,Xiaoxia Ye,Minghua Liu

Efficient removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) from wastewater is of great significance but extremely challenging. Herein, a novel adsorbent lignin-based multi-metal ferrite biochar (FeNiZn-LBC) was synthesized through pyrolysis with controllable temperature and hydrothermal reaction using lignin of sinocalamus oldhami as raw material. The adsorption property of FeNiZn-LBC for OTC was systematically researched, and the results displayed that adsorption of FeNiZn-LBC to OTC accorded with the Langmuir model and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was 476 mg g −1 . Notably, FeNiZn-LBC can be regenerated with 0.100 mol L −1 NaOH. Additionally, we raised rational explanations for the mechanisms of adsorption behavior based on the zeta potential and XPS spectra. The adsorption of FeNiZn-LBC for OTC was mainly controlled by the electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds and complexation involving FeNiZn-LBC and OTC, especially the metal-oxide bond (M-O) generated after loaded with multi-metal ferrite played a positive role in the removal of OTC from water. Our work highlighted the potential of FeNiZn-LBC for excellent adsorption of OTC in next generation.

Hydrothermal synthesis of the cauliflower-like CdS microspheres to enhance solar photocatalytic degradation of Oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Longbao Yu,Yanfeng Tang,Xinlin Liu,Changchang Ma,Pengwei Huo,Jianming Pan,Weidong Shi,Yongsheng Yan

The Cadmium sulfide (CdS) microsphere photocatalysts with the cauliflower-like morphology have been synthesized by hydrothermal method. The as-prepared photocatalysts have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, UV–vis absorption (UV–vis), and the thermo-gravimetric analysis. The UV–vis measurements show that the CdS microsphere prepared with 2 h have a band gap about 2.13 eV, which is smaller than the reported 2.42 eV, thus the as-prepared photocatalysts can be easily photoexcited and exhibit better photocatalytic performance. The photo-degradation experiments have been performed with CdS photocatalysts prepared with various synthesis conditions. Particularly, the CdS microsphere photocatalysts show the highest degradation ratio (72.78%) of Oxytetracycline hydrochloride under the visible light irradiation.

Carbon nanotube-loaded copper-nickel ferrite activated persulfate system for adsorption and degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Yuting Ma,Rong Wang,Chenping Gao,Runping Han

In this study, a new composite (MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 ) prepared by loading magnetic CuNiFe 2 O 4 particles onto carboxylated carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) through co-precipitation was applied to remove oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC-HCl) in solution. The magnetic properties of this composite could address of the issue of difficulty associated with the separation of MWCNTs from mixtures when applied as an adsorbent. In addition to the good adsorption properties recorded for MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 towards OTC-HCl, this developed composite could be used to activate potassium persulfate (KPS) for an efficient degradation of OTC-HCl. The MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 was systematically characterized using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of dose of MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 , the initial pH, the amount of KPS and the reaction temperature on the adsorption and degradation of OTC-HCl by MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 were discussed. The adsorption and degradation experiments showed that MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 exhibited an adsorption capacity of 270 mg·g −1 for OTC-HCl with the removal efficiency 88.6% at 303 K (at an initial pH 3.52, 5 mg KPS, 10 mg composite, 10 mL reaction concentration 300 mg·L −1 of OTC-HCl). The Langmuir and Koble-Corrigan models were used to describe the equilibrium process while the Elovich equation and Double constant model were suitable to describe the kinetic process. The adsorption process was based on single-molecule layer reaction and non-homogeneous diffusion process. The mechanisms of adsorption were complexation and hydrogen bond whereas active species such as SO 4 ‧- , ‧ OH and 1 O 2 were confirmed to have played a major role in the degradation of OTC-HCl. The composite was also found to be very stable with good reusability property. These results confirm the good potential associated with the use of MWCNTs-CuNiFe 2 O 4 /KPS system for the removal of some typical pollutants from wastewater.

Visible light photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride using chitosan-loaded Z-scheme heterostructured material BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4

Jiawen Zhang,Haoyang Xu,Yage Zheng,Yue Shen,Chaoqun Mu,Yao Wang,Aili Niyazi,Zhixian He,Zhiqiang Zhang,Liang Zhang,Juanqin Xue

In this work, a Z -scheme heterostructured BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 material was synthesized and immobilized on chitosan (CTS) to obtain the BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 /CTS photocatalytic material for photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (CTC).Our findings indicate that the composite material BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 , as well as the BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 /CTS composite membrane , displayed a significantly higher efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of CTC compared to BiOCOOH alone, owing to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis . Following four cycles of use, the composite material retained around 96 % of its initial photocatalytic degradation activity. The addition of CTS in the photocatalytic material resolved issues such as aggregation and difficult recovery commonly encountered with powder materials, thereby facilitating effective collision between the photocatalytic active sites and CTC. Experimental and theoretical calculations provided confirmation that the combination of BiOCOOH and O-gC 3 N 4 effectively enhanced the light absorption capacity and photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of environmental factors such as pH value and anions on the photocatalytic degradation experiment, which offers valuable insights for the application of composite catalysts in wastewater treatment .

Constructing Z-scheme AgI@MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient photodegradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride under visible light

Hongbin He,Xi Zhu,Ziping Huo,Bolong Liang,Shu-Xuan Liang

AgI@MIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst was fabricated via in-situ precipitation method. • The photocatalyst achieved 95.25% degradation efficiency of OTC within 180 min. • The photocatalyst exhibited excellent practical applicability in real water samples. • Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and degradation pathway were elucidated. Owing to their extensive and long-term application as well as poor degradability, antibiotics are inevitably persistent in aquatic environments due to their extensive and long-term use as well as heir difficulty in degradation. The development of efficient photocatalysts is therefore of crucial significance in environmental purification. In this study, a Z-scheme MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst was rationally designed and fabricated via a combined solvothermal and in-situ precipitation methods for the efficient removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), where MIL-101(Fe) is a typical member of the metal-organic framework (MOF) family. A series of characterization methods were employed to systematically observe the morphology and microstructure, optical properties, and photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared photocatalyst. The AgI@MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposites achieved an OTC degradation efficiency of 95.25% within 180 min under visible-light irradiation, demonstrating superior photocatalytic activity compared to a single-component counterparts. Structural characterizations results indicated that AgI formed a tight interface contact with MIL-101(Fe), which provided an effective structural foundation for theheterojunction construction. AgI particles were well dispersed on MIL-101(Fe), effectively mitigating their aggregation and thus creating abundant light absorption and reaction sites for photocatalytic reactions. Photoelectrochemical measurements further demonstrated that the nanocomposite possessed strong light absorption ability and high separation efficiency for photogenerated carriers. The as-prepared photocatalyst also exhibited excellent practical applicability in the treatment of actual water samples from Baiyangdian Lake. Five cycles of experiments indicated that its outstanding structural and catalytic stability. Mechanistic investigations identified superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) as the primary active factors responsible for OTC degradation. Finally, the typical Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and degradation pathway of OTC were finally proposed. This work provides a new design strategy and practical reference for the development of high-performance photocatalysts targeting the efficient removal of OTC and other antibiotics from aquatic environments. Construction of β-Cyclodextrin-Modified BiOIO3/β-Bi2O3Type-II Heterojunctions for Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride

Xinglin Li,Pengfei Zhu,Maojie Zhang,Yunhui Jiang,Minxiu Zhao

Antibiotic residues in aquatic environments pose a persistent threat to ecosystems and human health, necessitating efficient remediation strategies. This study presents a supramolecular-engineered type-II heterojunction that integrates β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) surface functionalization with a coral-like BiOIO3/β-Bi2O3 heterostructure for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). β-CD functionalization simultaneously extends visible-light harvesting through supramolecular sensitization and concentrates OTC molecules at the catalyst surface via host–guest inclusion complexation, which collectively accelerates interfacial charge-transfer kinetics. Concurrently, the staggered type-II band alignment between BiOIO3 and β-Bi2O3 promotes efficient spatial separation of photogenerated carriers, suppressing recombination. The optimized composite (2.5β-CD/BiOIO3/30β-Bi2O3) achieves 87.34% OTC degradation within 60 min, exhibiting a pseudo-first-order rate constant 2.87-fold that of pristine BiOIO3. Comprehensive characterizations confirm the heterojunction architecture and reactive oxygen species evolution. The catalyst exhibits satisfactory photostability after being used 4 times. Degradation pathways are elucidated via high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), while density functional theory (DFT) calculations of electrostatic potential, Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO), and Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) distributions identify the preferential reactive sites of OTC, providing molecular-level mechanistic insight. This work decouples the synergistic contributions of surface supramolecular engineering and heterojunction band engineering, offering a design strategy for photocatalytic remediation of refractory pharmaceutical pollutants.
