The widespread occurrence of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) in natural environments poses big threats to the biosphere due to the generation of toxic inorganic arsenic (i.e., As(III) and As(V), especially As(III) with higher toxicity and mobility). Oxidation of p -ASA or As(III) to As(V) followed by precipitation of total arsenic using Fe-based advanced oxidation processes demonstrated to be a promising approach for the treatment of arsenic contamination. This study for the first time investigated the efficiency and inherent mechanism of p -ASA and As(III) oxidation by Fe(II)/peracetic acid (Fe(II)/PAA) and PAA processes. p -ASA was rapidly degraded by the Fe(II)/PAA process within 20 s at neutral to acidic pHs under different conditions, while it was insignificantly degraded by PAA oxidation alone. Lines of evidence suggested that hydroxyl radicals and organic radicals generated from the homolytic O O bond cleavage of PAA contributed to the degradation of p -ASA in the Fe(II)/PAA process. p -ASA was mainly oxidized to As (V), NH 4 + , and p -aminophenol by the Fe(II)/PAA process, wherein the aniline group and its para position were the most vulnerable sites. As(III) of concern was likely generated as an intermediate during p -ASA oxidation and it could be readily oxidized to As(V) by the Fe(II)/PAA process as well as PAA alone. The in-depth investigation demonstrated that PAA alone was effective in the oxidation of As(III) under varied conditions with a stoichiometric molar ratio of 1:1. Efficient removal (> 80%) of total arsenic during p -ASA oxidation by Fe(II)/PAA process or during As(III) oxidation by PAA process with additional Fe(III) in synthetic or real waters were observed, mainly due to the adsorptive interactions of amorphous ferric (oxy)hydroxide precipitates. This study systematically investigates the oxidation of p -ASA and As(III) by the Fe(II)/PAA and PAA processes, which is instructive for the future development of arsenic remediation technology.

In this study, potassium ferrate(VI) was employed for the degradation of p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) and simultaneous removal of the generated arsenic species though in-situ coagulation. The effects of several factors, including ferrate(VI) dosage, initial pH, coexisting anions, and humic acid, on the p-ASA degradation and arsenic species removal were investigated. Under various water quality conditions, an excellent removal of p-ASA could always be achieved with the 20:1 mol radio dosage of ferrate(VI) and p-ASA within 30 min. But the removal of arsenic species is significantly affected by the water quality. It could be inhibited by alkalinity and presence of phosphate and humic acid. The generated ferric oxide was mainly 2-line ferrihydrite according to the XRD and XPS analysis. Based on the HPLC-HG-AFS and GC–MS analysis, the major degradation products were detected and the mechanism of the p-ASA degradation by ferrate(VI) and the released arsenic removal by 2-line ferrihydrite generated from ferrate(VI) was given. Two simultaneous degradation pathways of p-ASA were proposed. The p-ASA in solution attacked by ferrate(VI) in solution would lead cleavage of the As–C bond firstly to generate As(III) and p-aminophenol. On the other hand, small amounts of p-ASA initially absorbed on 2-line ferrihydrite would be firstly converted to 4-nitrophenylarsonic acid through the oxidation of –NH 2 to –NO 2 by ferrate(VI), subsequently transformed to As(III) and p-nitrophenol. Combined with the strong oxidizing and the high removal capacity of released arsenic by its generated product, ferrate(VI) have well potential applications for controlling the risk of p-ASA in wastewater.

Efficient removal of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) from contaminated water is crucial for mitigating arsenic contamination. In this study, a membrane adsorbent named CFM-Zn is developed by retanning Zn on a collagen fiber membrane (CFM). This development leverages the unique physicochemical properties of CFM and the strong affinity of Zn for p -ASA. The membrane is composed entirely of green, low-carbon, and recyclable materials, achieving sustainable removal of p -ASA and embodying the concept of using waste to treat waste for environmental recovery. Remarkably, it exhibits an ultra-high capacity of up to 515.46 mg·g −1 . Additionally, CFM-Zn demonstrates moderate reusability, with effectiveness maintained for at least five cycles. This study could advance the development of bio-based materials for water pollutant removal, expand the applications of leather waste, and significantly promote environmental purification and resource recycling.

As an emerging micro-pollutant, p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) exist widely in the environment, and it can form highly toxic arsenate and arsenite during the migration and transformation process, which greatly increases the risk of arsenic pollution in the ecosystem. Additionally, three-dimensional (3D) porous block materials have the advantage of stronger adsorption performance, faster adsorption rate and easy recovery, showing broad application prospects in water pollution control . Hence, the aminozed collagen fibers foam (ACFF) with 3D porous block structure was synthesized. The maximum adsorption capacity of ACFF for p -ASA was 476.19 mg·g −1 due to the rich honeycomb porous structure and the synergistic effect of electrostatic attraction , hydrogen bonding effect and amphiphilicity. Moreover, ACFF is not only easy to recycle, but also has good elastic recovery and regeneration performance. The pore size of ACFF was concentrated in the range of 25–5000 nm, and the porosity was 71.66%. ACFF may be an adsorbent with great potential for the removal of organoarsenic contaminants in water.

It is crucial for water environment security to remove its p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) efficiently. Namely, removing p -arsanilic acid from aqueous media through magnetic separation, has become a novel method of removing toxic pollutants from water. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated a higher adsorption of lignin-based magnetic activated carbon (201.64 mg g −1 ) toward p -ASA. In addition, LMAC nanoparticles exhibited typical magnetism (35.63 emu g −1 of saturation magnetization) and could be easily separated from the aqueous solution. Meanwhile, the endothermic adsorption of p -ASA over LMAC could spontaneously proceed and be well described by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order model as well as the intra-particle diffusion model. Moreover, the mechanisms during p -ASA adsorption over LMAC included the electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interaction. Importantly, lignin-based magnetic activated carbon has high absorbability and preferable reusability in real water samples. Consequently, this paper provides insights into preparation of the lignin-based magnetic activated carbon may be potential adsorbents for the remediation of organoarsenic compounds.
