Phenolphthalein (PHT) is always applied as an acid-base indicator but suffers from too wide a range of characterization and uneven dispersion in thin films. To solve this problem, in this work, a composite filler SiO₂@PHT-1 with a jujube cake structure was designed. The size of phenolphthalein particles was effectively regulated by intervening in the growth process of phenolphthalein nuclei through silica (SiO₂). This also improved the dispersion of PHT in fluororubber (FKM) films, as well as the indicator film's tensile strength (57.1%) and initial decomposition temperature (201.6 °C), resulting in the pH indicator film with excellent tensile properties and thermal stability. The FKM/SiO₂@PHT-1 film is also capable of determining the pH value of a solution based on color and phenomena. In addition, the dense protective layer formed by the silica retards the release of PHT in the sample solution, which contributes to the reusability of the film. This method shows great promise and can be applied to laboratory and swimming pool alkalinity testing.

Intelligent food packaging, as an innovative direction for enhancing food quality monitoring capabilities, has garnered extensive attention among consumers and in the research community in recent years. This study constructed composite film materials using sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the matrix, loaded with the natural active ingredient curcumin to evaluate the potential of the composite film as an indicator of shrimp freshness. The results revealed that the composite film had a thickness of less than 0.1 mm and could effectively block ultraviolet-visible light. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses indicated that curcumin was uniformly distributed within the film matrix. This composite film exhibited strong antioxidant activity (ABTS scavenging rate: 82 %; DPPH scavenging rate: 47.9 %) and reliable pH-responsive characteristics, turning purple or reddish-brown when the pH exceeded 10. This property provides a simple and intuitive method for detecting changes in food quality. In terms of monitoring shrimp freshness, the composite film effectively indicated spoilage. The SA-PVA-CUR30 film changed from light yellow to purple on the fourth day, with a significant increase in the ΔE value (from 34.52 to 51.89), demonstrating optimal indicating performance. In conclusion, this pH-sensitive composite film offers new insights for innovation in food packaging and lays a foundation for the precise control of food quality.

Perishable food poses significant food safety hazards and threatens public health. Consequently, pH indicator films have garnered considerable interest due to their potential for early detection of food spoilage. This research used red-fleshed pitaya peel powder as raw material, and betalaines were extracted using DES composed of choline chloride and citric acid as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, respectively. The extraction conditions were optimized by response surface experiment, and the content of betalaine (BT) extracted in the verification experiment was 4.39 mg/g. The film was prepared using the solvent casting technique. The above DES/BT solution (DES/BT) was added into sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) pH indicator films, and the effects of DES/BT on the physicochemical, optical and surface properties of the films were studied. The results showed that the film with 0.7 mL (1.4 %, v/v) DES/BT had the best tensile strength(23.14 MPa), water solubility(16.02 %), and water vapor permeability (7.64×10 −5 g*m*m −2 *Pa*h −1 ). The addition of DES and DES/BT made the film surface texture uniform and wrinkle-free and the UV transmittance decreased from 73.27 % to 61.83 %. Experiments on the film in different pH solutions showed that the film had a colorimetric response. Overall, the incorporation of DES/BT into the films presents significant potential for monitoring food freshness.

The pH, ammonia, and H 2 S sensitivity of sodium alginate/black soybean seed coat anthocyanin (SA/BSSCA) films and their response mechanism were analyzed based on stability, intermolecular interactions, and microstructure. The results showed that the with the BSSCA content increased from 0.02% to 0.30%, SA/0.02–0.12BSSCA films had the highest color stability. The highest sensitivity to pH, ammonia, and H 2 S was observed for the SA/0.12–0.30BSSCA films, meanwhile, the SA/0.12BSSCA film had the highest sensitivity to meat unfreshness and spoilage. The incorporation of BSSCAs reduced the water solubility, water vapor absorption, and permeability of the films. With the BSSCA addition, the intermolecular interaction between BSSCAs and SA intensified, reducing the film roughness and number of aggregated particles, resulting in compact microstructures, which improved the film sensitivity. Thus, the SA/0.12BSSCA film was sensitive to pH, ammonia, and H 2 S and, therefore, meat spoilage, while having higher stability, moderate water barrier properties, and denser microstructure.
