Enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction activity of FeM (M = Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh) nanoparticles with N-doped carbon coatings over a wide-pH environment

Guoliang Gao,Huangze Yu,Xue Lu Wang,Ye-Feng Yao

The alloy catalyst formed by transition metal and a small amount of noble metal has become the most promising substitute for M-based ( M  = Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh) catalyst. However, due to the direct exposure of the metal core to the electrolyte, it is vulnerable to corrosion and oxidation, which in turn reduces the catalytic stability and is becoming a major obstacle to sustainable hydrogen production. The present work addresses this issue by developing a one-step immersion-adsorption-pyrolysis strategy for synthesizing FeM alloy nanoparticles with N-doped carbon coatings (FeM@CN) for use as electrocatalysts in the HER. The deliberately designed metal-organic framework material was used as the precursor of catalyst synthesis to achieve the carbon coatings and simultaneously the heteroatom in-situ doping for the alloy nanoparticles. The optimal FePt@CN demonstrates excellent catalytic stability and HER activity in an acidic electrolyte medium. The reactions obtain a small overpotential of 28 mV to achieve current densities of 10 mA cm −2 , which are comparable to a high-performance commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst with a much higher Pt loading. The FeRu@CN also demonstrates an outstanding performance with an overpotential of only 18 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline medium.

Anchoring ultrafine Ru nanoparticles triggers 2H MoS2 basal plane for efficient dual-pH Hydrogen evolution

Kunjie Wang,Yanan Li,Dongxu Yang,Yunsi Wang,Fuan Wei,Bingxin Liu,Peng Zhang,Benhua Xu,Yongcheng Li

Coupling noble metals on molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has emerged as a promising strategy for triggering inert basal plane and boosting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performances. Herein, ultrafine Ru nanoparticles (NPs) are decorated on vertical 2H MoS 2 nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal method. Benefiting from new active site centers triggered by ultrafine Ru NPs and vertically grown 2H MoS 2 nanosheets on carbon cloth (CC), Ru 0.15 @2H MoS 2 exhibits impressive HER performances in dual pH media, with low overpotentials of 20 and 111 mV and small Tafel slope of 67.6 and 76.3 mV dec ‑1 in alkaline and acid solutions to drive a current density of 10 mA cm -2 . DFT calculation results prove that ultrafine Ru NPs decorated on 2H MoS 2 nanosheets endow Ru 0.15 @2H MoS 2 with low hydrogen adsorption free energy and fast charge transfer kinetics. This work provides an effective and simple method for designing MoS 2 -based catalysts with high catalytic activity to decorate precious metal in a wide pH medium.

Pt/α-MoC Catalyst Boosting pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reaction at High Current Densities

Wei Liu,Anyang Wang,Jihan Zhang,Shixiang Yu,Maolin Wang,Shuheng Tian,Haoyi Tang,Ziwen Zhao,Xiao Ren,Yuzheng Guo,Ding Ma

Constructing subnanometric electrocatalysts is an efficient method to synergistically accelerate H2O dissociation and H+ reduction for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for industrial water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. Here, we construct a subnanometric Pt/α-MoC catalyst, where the α-MoC component can dissociate water effectively, with the rapid proton release kinetics of Pt species on Pt/α-MoC to obtain a good HER performance at high current densities in all-pH electrolytes. Quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses and density functional theory calculations confirm the highly efficient water dissociation capability of α-MoC and the thermodynamically favorable desorption process of hydrolytically dissociated protons on Pt sites at the high current density. Consequently, Pt/α-MoC requires only a low overpotential of 125 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm–2. Moreover, a Pt/α-MoC-based proton exchange membrane water electrolysis device exhibits a low cell voltage (1.65 V) and promising stability over 300 h with no performance degradation at an industrial-level current density of 1 A cm–2. Notably, even at a current of 100 A, the cell voltage remains low at 2.15 V, demonstrating Pt/α-MoC’s promising potential as a scalable alternative for industrial hydrogen production. These findings elucidate the synergistic mechanism of α-MoC and atomically dispersed Pt in promoting efficient HER, offering valuable guidance for the design of electrocatalysts in high current density hydrogen.

RuP2 Nanoparticles Decorated on Natural Cellulose Nanofibrils-Derived N, P Codoped Carbon Matrix for Hydrogen Evolution at Dual pH and Seawater

Shunyu Shen,Qian Zhang,Weijia Guo,Gaojie Jiao,Yawen Wang,Han Wang,Kai Shao,Zhenjie Wang,Caicai Li,Xianyun Peng,Qingfeng Sun

The exploration of non-Pt catalysts that are highly efficient, durable, and cost-effective for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for enhancing the energy efficiency of water splitting technologies. In this study, we fabricated an electrocatalyst comprising RuP2 nanoparticles decorated on N, P codoped cellulose nanofibers (CNFs)-derived carbon networks (RuP2/NPC) through a simple mixing-pyrolysis strategy. Specifically, the CNFs, which are rich in oxygen-containing functional groups, not only serve as dispersants to prevent the restacking of graphene oxide (GO) and the aggregation of RuP2 nanoparticles, thereby exposing more active sites, but also form a conductive network with GO to facilitate electron transport. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the integration of NPC regulates the electronic structure of RuP2, resulting in a nearly thermoneutral ΔGH* at the Ru site of RuP2/NPC and making the HER process more feasible. Consequently, the synthesized catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity, achieving low overpotentials of 41 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 52 mV in 1.0 M KOH to drive a current density of 10 mA cm–2, while maintaining robust stability. Notably, RuP2/NPC also demonstrates promising performance in alkaline seawater electrolysis, requiring an overpotential of merely 108 mV to support the same level of current density. This research significantly advances the application of CNFs-derived carbon materials in hydrogen production and contributes to the high-value utilization of forestry resources, thereby providing an inspiring avenue for the advancement of efficient and sustainable energy conversion technologies.

Rapid and efficient removal of toxic ions from water using Zr-based MOFs@PIM hierarchical porous nanofibre membranes

Zimo Wang,Yaohan Chen,Li Wang,Jifu Zheng,Yong Fan,Suobo Zhang

The development of new adsorbent materials to improve adsorption capacity and selectivity constitutes a significant research direction for removing toxic ions from water. In this study, a series of Zr-based metal–organic framework hierarchical porous nanofibre membranes (MOFs@PIM-W) was designed and successfully synthesised, and their adsorption properties and mechanism for fluoride ions in water were investigated. The formation of Zr–F bonds in Zr-based MOFs is a primary reason for the rapid, effective, and stable removal of fluoride ions from water. Moreover, in contrast to common powder adsorbents and the conventional static adsorption process, the obtained hierarchical porous nanofibre membranes improve the removal rate of fluoride ions, which may be attributed to the formation of hierarchical porous structures. Specifically, by modifying the types of MOFs, the obtained nanofibre membranes can effectively remove Hg(II) ions from water under a wide range of pH environments (pH = 2–10) with a removal rate of up to 99 %. This indicates that the hierarchical porous design of nanofibre membranes incorporated with their specific adsorption provides a viable option for rapidly and efficiently removing toxic ions from water.

Direct in situ Measurement of Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction Properties using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Liu Tingting,Hua Wei,Yuan Huihong,Guo Congshan,Gao Qing,Lv Zhizhen,Tang Jigui,Wu Ze,Peng Yang,Hui Jingshu

One fundamental question facing electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is how to identify and correlate the local catalyst activity and stability to their bulk performance. Here we develop a versatile scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) platform to directly analyze catalyst stability, CO 2 RR product distribution, and chemical environment in complex systems at the microscopic scale. Using two Cu-porphyrin complex isomers as molecular catalysts, we have demonstrated that alternating the Cu-complex catalyst center to asymmetric Cu-N 3 C structure leads to reduced stability under constant potential electrolysis but increases the electrocatalytic activity under pulsed potential electrolysis. Testing the electroreduction properties of the catalysts in different electrolysis modes, we find alternating electrolysis pattern changes the catalyst product selectivity and the local pH environment at the vicinity of the catalyst surface, which sheds light on the origin of improved hydrocarbon propagation. This work introduces a fast, efficient, and multifunctional SECM technique for evaluating fundamental and mechanistic aspects of CO 2 RR in situ.

Ultrasensitive and in situ DNA detection in various pH environments based on a microfiber with a graphene oxide linking layer

Yunyun Huang,Bo Yu,Tuan Guo,Bai-Ou Guan

Ultrasensitive and in situ DNA detection at different pH values, ranging from 4.3 to 8.5, based on a microfiber with a graphene oxide linking layer was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The graphene oxide coating over the silica microfiber provides a strong π–π interaction with the detected single-stranded DNA molecules, and induces an amplified surface refractive index modulation over the fiber, and finally leads to a wavelength shift of the optical interference fringe for interrogation. Using this strategy, in situ DNA measurement with a detection limit of up to 10−12 M and a linear response in the pH range from 4.3–8.5 has been achieved. Benefiting from its compact size, high sensitivity, and ease of use, together with remote operational ability, the proposed sensor opens up a multitude of opportunities for quantifying DNA in various hard-to-reach environments. It may supplement the existing DNA detection tools.

Synergistic anticancer theragnostic study of a core-shell structured galvanic cell

Bao Jiang,Liping Wang,Gang Wu,Lin Zhou,Shaohua Wei

The chemodynamic therapy (CDT) effect is restricted by the neutral pH environment in the tumor, also, the protein corona formed on the surface of the CDT catalyst reduces its activity. Here, we synthesized a core-shell CDT drug consisting of Fe/Fe 3 C core and mesoporous graphite carbon shell with biotin modification (denoted FeCNB). The shell and core form a galvanic cells in the physiological electrolyte solution to achieve high-efficiency CDT under physiological pH conditions. The mesoporous in the shell effectively separates the protein corona from the Fe/Fe 3 C, avoiding the influence of the protein corona on the catalyst. However, the mesoporous is permeable for the substrate and product of the catalytic reaction . FeCNB also has T2-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) function and photothermal conversion ability under 808 nm laser irradiation. The tumor heating further improves the CDT effect to achieve a satisfactory synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT)/CDT outcome. In addition, FeCNB degrades in the microenvironment to ensure its excellent biocompatibility. It is the first study of CDT drug design and fabrication based on the mechanism of the galvanic cells.
