Removal of trichlorfon and phoxim from pak choi (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis) by combined ultrasonic and ozone treatment and their effects on quality

Shaofeng Yuan,Hang Yu,Yahui Guo,Yunfei Xie,Yuliang Cheng,He Qian,Weirong Yao

The effect of ultrasound, ozone, and their combination treatment on the removal of two common pesticides (trichlorfon and phoxim) in pak choi samples was studied in this work. The results showed that both ultrasound and ozone treatment alone can significantly remove trichlorfon and phoxim residues in pak choi (>90%), but they reduced the quality of pak choi (such as vitamin C and color). Ultrasound and ozone had a synergistic effect on the removal of pesticide residues in pak choi. The synergistic effect of combined treatment was evaluated from the perspective of pesticide removal speed, and found that their combination significantly accelerated the removal of pesticides. Compared with ultrasound or ozone alone, the removal rate constant of trichlorfon by the combined treatment increased by 121% and 347%, and that of phoxim increased by 159% and 367%, respectively. In addition, the combined treatment of ultrasound and ozone can well maintain the vitamin C and color of pak choi while removing pesticides. Therefore, the combined treatment of ultrasound and ozone can be used as an effective cleaning method to remove pesticide residues in vegetables. Practical applications Reducing pesticide residues in vegetables is of great significance to human health, and how to maintain the quality of vegetables as much as possible while removing pesticides is a key issue. In this study, the combination of ultrasound and ozone significantly accelerated the removal of pesticides, and retained the vitamin C and color of pak choi well. Therefore, the combined application of ultrasound and ozone has the potential to be an industrial cleaning method for removing pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables without compromising quality.

Heavy Metal Exposure Alters the Uptake Behavior of 16 Priority Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) by Pak Choi (Brassica chinensis L.)

Songqiang Deng,Tan Ke,Yanfang Wu,Chao Zhang,Zhiquan Hu,Hongmei Yin,Limin Guo,Lanzhou Chen,Dayi Zhang

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) are predominant pollutants normally coexisting at electronic waste dumping sites or in agricultural soils irrigated with wastewater. The accumulation of PAHs and HMs in food crops has become a major concern for food security. This study explored the hydroponic uptake of 16 priority PAHs and 5 HMs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) by pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.). PAHs exhibited stronger inhibition on pak choi growth and physiological features than HMs. Five HMs were categorized into high-impact HMs (Cr, Cu, and Pb) and low-impact HMs (Cd and Zn) with distinct behavior under the coexposure with PAHs, and low-impact HMs showed synergistic toxicity effects with PAHs. Coexposure to PAHs and HMs slightly decreased the uptake and translocation of PAHs by pak choi, possibly attributing to the commutative hindering effects on root adsorption or cation−π interactions. The bioconcentration factors in PAHs + HMs treatments were independent of the octanol–water partition coefficient (Kow), owing to the cation-π interaction associated change of Kow and induced defective root system. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms and influential factors of PAHs uptake in Brassica chinensis L. and gives clues for reassessing the environmental risks of PAHs in food crops.

Extraction and characterization of chitin from Oratosquilla oratoria shell waste and its application in Brassica campestris L.ssp

Dandan Cui,Jin Yang,Bosi Lu,Lansheng Deng,Hong Shen

Mantis shrimp waste (Oratosquilla oratoria) is a good source of chitin. The applicability of microwave-assisted organic acids and proteases for extracting chitin from mantis shrimp shell waste was evaluated, and the extracted-chitin was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, the effects of nanochitin on the growth of pak choi ( Brassica campestris L.ssp.) were also investigated. The results indicated that alkaline protease (4000 U/g, microwave heating at 60 °C, 10 min) and malic acid (5%, 320 W, 5 min) exhibited excellent potential for deproteinizing and demineralizing shells. The deproteinization and demineralization yields were 92.78% and 94.11%, respectively, and the chitin yield was 15.6%. The extracted-chitin had a highly porous structure and exhibited excellent crystallinity and thermostability compared with chitin prepared by traditional chemical methods. Furthermore, 0.003% nanochitin significantly enhanced photosynthesis, which improved the pak choi fresh weight by 22.94%, and improved the accumulation of isothiocyanates in its leaves. This study provides an alternative approach for the high-value utilization of mantis shrimp waste, and reveals the potential of chitin for application in agricultural production.

Uptake, Translocation, and Metabolism of 14C-Quinotrione in Pak Choi

Enguang Nie,Dan Zhou,Dichen Ying,Zheng Lin,Jingyan Huang,Haiyan Wang,Zhen Yang

Few studies have examined the environmental fate of quinotrione, a new type of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicide in plants. In this study, the uptake, translocation, and metabolism of quinotrione in pak choi were explored using 14C-labeling method and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The results showed that 57.7% of 14C-quinotrione was accumulated by pak choi via foliar application. The 14C-quinotrione concentration in the leaves (444.0 mg kg–1) at 5 d was 20 times higher than that in the roots (22.3 mg kg–1). The parent compound was the dominant residues (44.5–57.0%), while five metabolites were identified. Among these, hydroxylated quinotrione emerged as a key intermediate, with another three metabolites formed through hydrolysis, reduction, and oxidation. Notably, 6-(2,6-dioxocyclohexane-1-carbonyl)-1-methylquinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-dione was the most abundant metabolite (17.7–22.2%). Our study provides further insight into the uptake and metabolism of HPPD herbicides in pak choi and the assessment of the environmental risk and food safety of quinotrione.

17β-estradiol-induced growth–defense tradeoffs in pak choi (Brassica) and implications for intake risk

Yang Chen,Junyue Wang,Zikang Zhang,Zeming Wang,Youai Zhang,Yanzheng Gao,Chao Qin,Wanting Ling

Estradiol (E2), a natural endocrine disruptor, can be absorbed, accumulated, and metabolized by plants; however, it poses notable risks to the environment and reproductive health of humans and animals. The effects of E2 accumulation in soil used for cultivation remain poorly defined. In this study, we established a soil-based cultivation system to investigate the E2-accumulation dynamics, biochemical responses, and developmental changes in pak choi during its growth cycle. The accumulation of estrogens in roots was always higher than in shoots throughout the cultivation period. Estrone was the predominant accumulation form of the natural estrogens in plant tissues. However, microstructural analyses and antioxidant system indicators revealed irreversible plant damage, leading to compromised harvest quality despite food safety at maturity. Visible morphological traits reflect these differences in quality, enabling consumers to identify risk-free vegetables. Growth and oxidative defense are co-regulated across time and E2 levels, with plants gradually shifting from growth to defense strategies, a previously unrecognized adaptation to estrogen stress. Combining experimental monitoring with modeling, we quantified the E2-associated risks and assessed the risk quotient of total natural estrogens after E2 transformation. The intake risks of pak choi initially increased and subsequently declined, with the edible portion at harvest being risk-free (hazard quotient <1). This study provides the first evidence of the long-term effects of E2 on pak choi under natural soil conditions, offers key insights into the link between plant physiology and dietary risk, and supports the establishment of science-based thresholds for natural estrogens in crop production systems.

Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes interaction affected by mixed amendments under paddy-pak choi continued planting

Houfu Li,Touqeer Abbas,Mei Cai,Qichun Zhang,Jingwen Wang,Yong Li,Hongjie Di,Muhammad Tahir

Cadmium (Cd) is the most concerning soil pollutant , and a threat to human health, especially in China. The in-situ immobilization of Cadmium by amendments is one of the most widely adopted methods to remedy soil contamination. The study was designed to evaluate the effect of organo-chemical amendments on soil Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes under continuous planting of rice ( Oryza sativa ) and pak choi ( Brassica chinensis L. ). The experiment was carried out using four amendments, Lime, Zeolite, Superphosphate , and Biochar, at two different ratios; M1: at the ratio of 47:47:5:1, and M2 at the ratio of 71:23:5:1, respectively. Moreover, both M1 and M2 were enriched at four levels (T1: 0.5%; T2: 1%; T3: 2%; T4: 4%). Results showed that compared with CK (Cd enriched soils), the yield of rice under treatments of M1T1 and M2T1 increased by 8.93% and 8.36%, respectively. While the biomass (fresh weight) of pak choi under M1 and M2 amendments increased by 2.52–2.98 times and 0.76–2.89 times respectively, under enrichment treatments T1, T2, and T3. The total Cd concentrations in rice grains treated with M1T3 and M2T3 decreased by 89.25% and 93.16%, respectively, compared with CK. On the other hand, the total Cd concentrations in pak choi under M1T3 and M2T2 decreased by 92.86% and 90.23%, respectively. The results showed that soil pH was the main factor affecting Cd bioavailability in rice and pak choi. The Variance partitioning analysis (VPA) of rice and pak choi showed that soil pH was the most significant contributing factor. In the rice season, the contribution of soil pH (P) on Cd bioavailability was 10.14% (P = 0.102), and in the pak choi season, the contribution of soil pH was 8.38% (P = 0.133). Furthermore, the abundance of ammonia oxidation and denitrifying microorganisms had significantly correlation with soil pH and exchange Cd. In rice season, when the enrichment level of amendments increased from 0.5% (T1) to 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOA, AOB, nirK , nirS and nosZ (І) tended to decrease. While in pak choi season, when the enrichment level increased at the level of 0.5% (T1), 1% (T2), and 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOB, nirS, and nosZ (І) increased. Additionally, the gene abundance of AOA and nirK showed a reduction in the pak choi season contrasting to rice. And the mixed amendment M2 performed better at reducing Cd uptake than M1, which may have correlation with the ratio of lime and zeolite in them. Finally, we conclude that between these two amendments, when applied at a moderate level M2 type performed better than M1 in reducing Cd uptake, and also showed positive effects on both gene abundance and increase soil pH.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Triazine Herbicides in Agricultural Water Using a Fe3O4/SiO2/TiO2 Photocatalyst: Phytotoxicity Assessment in Pak Choi

Yoshiaki Nomura,Manabu Kiguchi,Zhongoing Liang,Mei Ma,Akira Fujishima,Nobuhiro Hanada

The triazine herbicides simetryn and prometryn may cause damage to nontarget crops due to persistent contamination of agricultural water. Photocatalysis is a promising technology for the degradation of agricultural pollutants. This study provides the first systematic integration of photocatalytic herbicide degradation with live plant bioassay validation using cost-effective Fe3O4/SiO2/TiO2 magnetic photocatalysts synthesized by a simple coprecipitation method suitable for large-scale production. The phytotoxicity of herbicide-containing water was evaluated using pak choi, a crop sensitive to triazines. Both herbicides were completely decomposed in water within 240 min after UV irradiation, and their phytotoxicity also disappeared. In the plant toxicity evaluation, prometryn exhibited temporary high toxicity exceeding that of the untreated 10 ppm solution during the photodegradation process. In previous photocatalyst studies, evaluations relied on either chemical analysis or biological tests. In this study, we developed a new rapid toxicity screening technique using plant seedlings and established a safety evaluation protocol integrating chemical analysis and plant toxicity tests. This method represents the first approach to comprehensively evaluate the safety of agricultural water.

The toxicological effect on pak choi of co-exposure to degradable and non-degradable microplastics with oxytetracycline in the soil

Guanlin Li,Yi Tang,Kiran Yasmin Khan,Yowhan Son,Jinho Jung,Xuchun Qiu,Xin Zhao,Babar Iqbal,Peter Joseph Stoffella,Gwang-Jung Kim,Daolin Du

Microplastics and antibiotics are emerging as ubiquitous contaminants in farmland soil, harming crop quality and yield, and thus threatening global food security and human health. However, few studies have examined the individual and joint effects of degradable and/or non-degradable microplastics and antibiotics on crop plants. This study examined the individual and joint effects of polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics and the antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) on pak choi by measuring its growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant enzyme activity, and metabolite levels. Microplastics and/or oxytetracycline adversely affected root weight, photosynthesis, and antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase) activities. The levels of leaf metabolites were significantly altered, causing physiological changes. Biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites and amino acids was altered, and plant hormones pathways were disrupted. Separately and together, OTC, PE, and PLA exerted phytotoxic and antagonistic effects on pak choi. Separately and together with OTC, degradable microplastics altered the soil properties, thus causing more severe impacts on plant performance than non-degradable microplastics. This study elucidates the effects on crop plants of toxicity caused by co-exposure to degradable or non-degradable microplastic and antibiotics contamination and suggests mechanisms.
