The development of extra-broadband visible emission phosphors is crucial to achieve next-generation illumination with better color experience. Herein, a defect engineering strategy mediated by the structural cationic substitution is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for specific ultra-broadband emission in a garnet phosphor. The induced oxygen vacancies and interstitial cation through lattice distortion break the periodic potential field of the crystal and provide electronic levels in the band gap. As a result, excited by blue-light-emitting diodes, the novel Y3Sc2Al3O12:B3+ shows an ultra-broad emission with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ∼170 nm. Compared to general defect-emitting phosphors, the unique Y3Sc2Al3O12:B3+ exhibits excellent thermal quenching resistance and superior internal quantum efficiency of up to 95%. These findings not only show great promise of Y3Sc2Al3O12:B3+ as an extra-broadband emitter but also provide a new design strategy to achieve a full-visible-spectrum phosphor in a single-component material for white-light applications.

An intriguing novel perovskite-type Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 : Eu 2+ phosphor with desirable properties for potential application in the field of white light-emitting diodes was first time synthesized. The Rietveld structural refinement, scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to determine the crystallographic parameters, morphology and microstructure of Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 : Eu 2+ phosphor. The first principle calculation based on the density functional theory further provided a theoretical understanding of the band structure for the undoped Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 and indicated that it has a large direct band gap of 7.1 eV. Upon the excitation of Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 : Eu 2+ phosphor in the broad range of 250–450 nm, the bright blue light emission was observed with the maximum at 474 nm and a full width at half-maximum of 2808 cm −1 that was attributed to the electric-dipole allowed 4f 6 5 d 1 →4f 7 transition of Eu 2+ ions. Based on the Dexter’s theory, the concentration quenching mechanism among Eu 2+ in the Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 : Eu 2+ phosphor was validated to be the dipole-dipole interaction, and the critical distance was determined to be 23.34 Å. On the basis of temperature-dependent luminescence measurement, an analysis of the origins of thermal quenching behavior was presented. The Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 : Eu 2+ phosphor not only has favorable thermal stability with emission intensity reduction by 20% at T = 473 K in reference to the room temperature level, but also shows the integrated PL intensity 95% as high as that of BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu 2+ , internal quantum efficiency of 64% and color purity of 85%. The results of this work indicate that the blue-emitting Cs 4 Mg 3 CaF 12 : Eu 2+ phosphor with promising luminescence properties has a capacity for incorporation as a component to the near-UV based phosphor-converted WLEDs.

The rapid development of phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) requires new red phosphors with efficient and thermally stable luminescence for high-quality warm-white lighting. However, it is still a challenge to discover red phosphors with facile synthesis, high internal quantum efficiency (IQE), excellent thermal stability and high color purity. Herein, a novel red-emitting Eu 3+ activated barium dialuminum digermanate (BaAl 2 Ge 2 O 8 , BAGO) phosphor showing strong red emission at 610 nm was prepared. The IQE is improved from 32.91% to 78.84% by employing a charge compensation strategy. The lithium-ion co-doped BAGO:Eu 3+ phosphor exhibits a nearly twofold increase in integral photoluminescence (PL) intensity and the high color purity reaches 94.17%. Impressively, the PL intensity of the BAGO:Eu 3+ ,Li + phosphor drops by only 2.6% at 150 °C of that at room temperature. Finally, the pc-WLED using the red BAGO:Eu 3+ ,Li + phosphor exhibits white light with the chromaticity coordinate of (0.3515, 0.3495), a high color-rendering index of 92 and a low correlated color temperature of 4746 K. All these results manifest that BAGO:Eu 3+ ,Li + phosphor is a suitable red phosphor for near-ultraviolet (NUV) chip-based pc-WLEDs.

A series of LaNbO 4 :RE 3+ (RE = Tb and Eu) phosphors were successfully synthesized via a calcination-assisted hydrothermal reaction, where the vital roles of solution pH, calcination temperature and NbO 4 3− /La 3+ molar ratio in phase/morphology evolution of LaNbO 4 nanocrystals were elaborated. It was unambiguously demonstrated that monoclinic LaNbO 4 can be crystallized at solution pH = 8–13 after calcination at 900 °C. With pH = 10 precursor for example, higher calcination temperature led to phase transformation from orthorhombic to monoclinic structure. LaNbO 4 nanoparticles exhibit self-activated broad-band excitations ( 1 A 1 → 1 T 1,2 ) and emissions ( 3 T 2,1 → 1 A 1 ) within the NbO 4 3− ligand. Intriguingly, Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ incorporations allow for phase tailoring and full-visible-spectrum color-tunable luminescence, where the latter benefits from the effective NbO 4 3− → Tb 3+ → Eu 3+ energy transfer. LaNbO 4 :0.01 Tb 3+ ,0.01Eu 3+ phosphor exhibits stronger white-light emission, which gradually drifts to yellowish green at high heating temperature. This phosphor is an attractive candidate for optical thermometers and warm pc-WLED owning to excellent thermal stability, a low correlated color temperature of ∼5694 K and a high color rendering index of ∼90.

Borate-based phosphors have emerged as ideal host materials for near-ultraviolet ( n UV) pumped phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc- w LEDs) owing to their mild synthesis conditions, broad transparency window, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Cubic Ba 3 Y 2 B 6 O 15 (BYB) features a highly symmetric lattice structure, providing stable binding sites for rare-earth ions. Its [YO 6 ] octahedral structure allows for controllable lattice distortion, making it an ideal host for multivalent rare-earth luminescent systems. In this study, Ce 3+ , Eu 3+ , Eu 2+ , and Ca 2+ co-doped BYB nanophosphors were prepared in an Ar atmosphere. The partial substitution of Ba 2+ by Ca 2+ promotes the generation of more oxygen vacancies, which in turn induces the self-reduction of Eu 3+ to Eu 2+ . The phosphor exhibits strong absorption characteristics at 365 nm. Acting as an efficient sensitizer, Ce 3+ can simultaneously transfer energy to Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ . By tuning the Ca 2+ content, the Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ ratio and the emission color can be continuously adjusted, achieving a smooth transition from blue-green to orange-red. This Ca 2+ mediated strategy stabilizes the coexistence of Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ , addressing the key limitations of traditional single-phase phosphors. It provides a novel approach for developing high-performance n UV-excited warm white phosphors and demonstrates potential for widespread application in highly efficient pc- w LED devices.

Organic-inorganic hybrid copper(I) halide semiconductors have attracted extensive attention for applications in phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs), X-ray imaging, and photodetectors because of their superior photo/radioluminescence, structural diversity, and eco-friendliness. In our previous work, we proposed a novel strategy for synthesizing highly efficient blue-emitting copper(I) halide hybrids by combining coordinated anionic inorganic modules with cationic derivatives. However, the complexity of the synthesis process has limited the practical application of this approach. To address this challenge, we report a facile, efficient, and rapid solution-based ultrasonic treatment method for synthesizing high-performance blue-emitting phosphors with this structural motif using inexpensive and commercially available tetraethylammonium halides (TEAX, X = Cl, Br, and I). The synergistic interplay of ionic and covalent bonds in these compounds endows them with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 70% and excellent stability. These materials exhibit a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) mechanism, delivering outstanding performance in pc-WLEDs and X-ray imaging. Their exceptional properties highlight their significant potential for use in optoelectronic devices and X-ray scintillators. This work provides an important reference for the rapid synthesis of high-performance copper(I) halide hybrid phosphors and paves the way for their commercial application.

As blue emitting component in phosphor-converted white-light-emitting-diodes (pc-wLEDs) encapsulated with near-ultraviolet (NUV) chips, Eu2+ activated fluorapatite structure phosphors play key roles because of strong structural stability and excellent photoluminescent properties. A series of M5(PO4)3F: Eu2+ (M = Ca, Sr) samples have been newly prepared by deposition-precipitation process (DP) and exhibited a 6.7-fold enhancement of photoluminescent (PL) intensity due to the highly dispersed Eu2+ luminescence centers when compared with the reference samples synthesized via traditional solid-state reaction method (SSR). Detailed analysis of crystal field around Eu2+ and the nonlinear fitting of PL spectra concludes that Eu2+ activators with the 4f6 → 4f75d transition preferentially replace Ca1 in 4f symmetry sites leading to a fitted peak at 446 nm and the other sites of 6h are contributed to the 479 nm emitting of Eu2+ ions. Remarkably, tunable chromaticity of DP-M5(PO4)3F: Eu2+ with high color purity (97.79%) retains steady photoelectric converting and full width at half maxima (FWHM) of 46 nm in the device of DP-FAp: 0.03Eu2+@365 nm LED under diverse driving currents, which perfectly satisfies the requirements of excitation light source for oral photocuring materials. Further, the 123.4% color gamut of National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard is efficiently obtained by matching Sr5(PO4)3F: Eu2+, CsPbBr3 and Lu3Al5O12: Mn4+ phosphors with a 365 nm chip (1 W) to achieve high-quality white light (CRI value reaches to 86, CCT is 7107 K and CIE chromaticity coordinate arrives at (0.292, 0.376), indicating a potential candidate for dentistry curing light and high-quality NUV excited pc-wLEDs.
