An ordered 1T/2H MoSe 2 possessed few-layers nanosheets structure was synthesized by a NaBH 4 -assisted hydrothermal method. Further, 1T/2H MoSe 2 was integrated with proton g-C 3 N 4 via solvothermal method, forming a novel 2D/2D heterostructure composite (1T/2H MoSe 2 /pg-C 3 N 4 ) with Z-scheme heterojunction. 1T/2H MoSe 2 /pg-C 3 N 4 had narrower bandgap, abundant active sites, as well as better photocurrent response and conductivity, confirmed by spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations. Consequently, the optimal 1T/2H MoSe 2 /pg-C 3 N 4 at 1 wt% MoSe 2 loading showed enhanced TC (RhB) photodegrading rate of 92% (99%), within 80 min (45 min) of simulated solar light irradiation, being 3.0 (3.4) and 1.2 (1.2) times than that of pg-C 3 N 4 and 2H MoSe 2 /pg-C 3 N 4 , respectively. Additionally, active species trapping experiments indicated that O 2 − and h + were the main species of contaminants degradation over 1T/2H MoSe 2 /pg-C 3 N 4 . Combining with DRS, Mott-Schottky and VB XPS analysis, a reasonable 1T phase boosted Z-scheme MoSe 2 -based heterojunction mechanism was proposed.

Making multiple heterojunction of photocatalysts is an effect approach to achieve high effective utilization of solar resource. A novel ternary AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite was synthesized with a unique n-p-n heterojunction. In this work, an in-situ transformation method was used to fabricate AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 heterostructure with different AgI/BiOI ratios. The photocatalytic activity of the AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 was detected by the degradation of methylene orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC). The AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 composites exhibited better photocatalytic activity than pg-C 3 N 4 and BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 composite. The performance of photocatalytic antibacterial inactivation of E. coli indicated that the AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 heterostructure is an ideal material for antibacterial applications. The ESR and trapping experiments confirmed that the degradation of organic pollution is completed through the co-operation of •O 2 − , •OH and h + . A possible mechanism of the degradation process is proposed.

Photocatalytic degradation is increasingly recognized as a highly effective approach for the removal of organic pollutants and pathogenic microorganisms from wastewater. Nevertheless, conventional unit catalysts often fall short of practical requirements, primarily due to their limited efficiency in photoinduced electron-hole transfer and the scarcity of active sites. In this work, three-dimensional porous material pg-C3N4 was synthesized utilizing the hard template method, employing dendritic mesoporous silica as the templating agent. And the nanoparticles of BiVO4/pg-C3N4 direct Z-heterojunction composite (BCN) were successfully constructed by using pg-C3N4 as growth template and BiVO4 in situ directed growth. The heterogeneous surface morphology of pg-C3N4 markedly enhances its capacity for visible light absorption and increases the availability of catalytic active sites. BCN demonstrates the ability to degrade 98% of Rhodamine B under simulated solar irradiation within 120 min and effectively inactivates 2 × 107 cfu ml−1 of E. coli under similar conditions within 60 min. Notably, after five cycles of use, the structural integrity and functional properties of the material remain largely unaltered. The superior photocatalytic degradation and photodynamic sterilization performance of BCN can be primarily attributed to its narrower band gap width of 2.34 eV, reduced electrochemical impedance, and enhanced separation and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers. Collectively, these properties facilitate the effective degradation of organic pollutants and the robust inactivation of bacteria by BCN under visible light irradiation. The successful implementation of this research offers a theoretical foundation and experimental insights for the future development of advanced Z-type photocatalysts.

A novel ternary plasmonic photocatalyst, Au-loaded porous graphitic C3N4/graphene layered composite (Au/pg-C3N4/GR), was fabricated by a facile sonication-photodeposition technique. In this hybrid structure, a polymeric semiconductor pg-C3N4 was immobilized on the surfaces of graphene sheets to form a layered composite with Au nanoparticles of sizes 10–15 nm uniformly deposited on it. The photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared Au/pg-C3N4/GR composite was evaluated by degradation of methylene blue (MB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) as representative dye pollutant and antibiotic pollutant under visible light irradiation, respectively. The degradation rates of MB and CIP over the Au/pg-C3N4/GR photocatalyst were 4.34 and 3.05 times higher that of porous g-C3N4 (pg-C3N4), respectively, and even 7.42 and 6.09 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4, respectively. The results indicated that an improved photocatalytic efficiency was obtained when Au nanoparticles and graphene sheets co-incorporated in porous g-C3N4. The porous structure within the samples is advantageous to the adsorption capacity. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Au and electron-acceptor role of graphene, which would improve the visible light harvesting ability, facilitate photogenerated charge carrier separation, as well as create more active reaction sites, and synergistically contribute to the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Moreover, a possible photocatalytic mechanism was also tentatively proposed.

Cotton fabrics are prone to harboring pathogenic microorganisms due to their microporous structure, leading to material degradation and potential health hazards. While conventional sterilization methods in medical systems such as autoclaving, UV irradiation, and chemical disinfectants are constrained by equipment reliance, restricted applicability, and possible hazards, this study introduces a sunlight-driven antibacterial solution. By constructing a pg-C3N4/ZnO heterojunction photosensitizer on the fabric surface, a Schottky barrier was created at the interfaces of ZnO and pg-C3N4, which enhanced carrier separation efficiency under solar illumination, thereby boosting reactive oxygen species generation for efficient sterilization. To overcome the limitations of traditional loading techniques such as impregnation and chemical precipitation in achieving precise ZnO deposition on pg-C3N4, atomic layer deposition was employed to optimize the heterojunction’s interfacial structure and energy band alignment, thereby maximizing ROS generation (demonstrating a 3.63-fold enhancement) and enabling efficient sunlight-driven antibacterial activity. The resulting composite exhibits dual antimicrobial mechanisms: high ROS concentrations induce oxidative damage to bacterial membranes, DNA, and proteins, while Zn2+ release from ZnO decomposition further disrupts microbial metabolism. Through stable amine-aldehyde covalent grafting, the pg-C3N4/ZnO system demonstrates durable antibacterial performance, rapid sterilization under washing, drying, and daily use conditions, and excellent scalability. This cost-effective and eco-friendly technology holds significant promise for applications in hygienic textiles, medical environments, and public infrastructure.

17β-estradiol (E2) is one of the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) ubiquitously with significant impacts on ecosystem and organisms even at extremely low concentrations. Photocatalytic membranes, with the combination of photocatalysis and membrane filtration, have great potential to enhance E2 removal. In this work, a photocatalytic membrane was fabricated from the polyamide (PA) microfiltration membrane and visible light responsive Bi 2 WO 6 /protonated g-C 3 N 4 (BPG) photocatalyst. The BPG photocatalyst was embedded into calcium alginate hydrogel followed by immobilizing onto PA membrane through vacuum filtration and crosslinking. The transparent calcium alginate hydrogel guaranteed 100% light transmittance which contributed to visible light induced photodegradation . Under static and dynamic conditions, the removal efficiency of E2 reached 99.5% and remained 95.1%, which was mainly owing to the synergistic effects of the adsorption of PA and photodegradation of the BPG nanocomposites . The synergistic interaction was fitted by modified Elovich model, and a strong positive correlation (r = 0.834, r s = 0.965) was confirmed by Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficient , indicating that adsorption could enhance photocatalysis by concentrating contaminants around the photocatalyst and photocatalysis could promote the adsorption by regenerating adsorption sites. The photocatalytic membrane can be reused, and the removal efficiency of E2 was 96.6% after 5 cycles. This work provided not only a facile fabrication of photocatalytic membrane, but also a deep understanding of the synergistic adsorption-photocatalysis for effective removal of E2.
