Phytoremediation is currently a very popular remediation method for salvaging rare earth mining sites. However, there is still a challenge concerning how to use secondary resources such as plant biomass following the extraction of rare earth elements (REEs). Herein, Dicranopteris pedata (Houtt.) Nakaike, a REEs hyperaccumulator, served to fabricate REEs-rich carbonisation materials (REEs/C) at different temperatures. The results showed that the percentages of Pb(II) removed using REEs/C prepared at 400 °C (REEs/C-4) and 800 °C (REEs/C-8) were 85.1% and 84.0%, respectively. These amounts were better than that of REEs-C prepared at 600 °C (REEs/C-6 (67.0%)). Characterisation analysis confirmed that rich functional groups like aromatic, hydroxyl and C = C/C-C in REEs/C-4 provided more chelation sites to effectively complex with Pb(II), while the superior removal capacity of REEs/C-8 resulted from the enrichment of more REEs and abundant pore structure. Chemisorption, such as ion exchange and chelation, plays a significant role in adsorption. During the carbonisation process of REEs/C, the REEs enriched in Dicranopteris pedata contributed to the formation of rare earth oxides and oxygen vacancies in the material, and these properties enhanced the Pb removal ability of REEs/C. Moreover, the REEs contained in the material did not cause a leaching phenomenon during Pb removal, which is a safe and environmentally friendly material. Finally, the REEs/C was applied to wastewater, and it was found that this material could effectively adsorb Pb from wastewater. Overall, this study generates a new insight into: firstly, how to use phytoextracted biomass containing REEs as valuable REEs/C materials; and secondly, how to save the environment by using technology that promotes recycling of used materials.

The ultimate purpose of phytoextraction is not only to remove heavy metals from soil but also to improve soil quality. Here, we evaluated how the joint effect of Streptomyces pactum (strain Act12) and inorganic (Hoagland's solution) and organic (humic acid and peat) nutrients affected the phytoextraction practice of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) by potherb mustard, and the microbial community composition within rhizosphere was also investigated. The results indicated that the nutrients exerted synergistically with Act12, all increasing the plant biomass and Cd/Zn uptakes. The inoculation of Act12 alone significantly increased dehydrogenase activity of rhizosphere soil ( P < 0.05), while urease and alkaline phosphatase activities varied in different dosage of Act12. Combined application of microbial strain with nutrients increased enzymatic activities with the elevated dosage of Act12. 16S ribosomal RNA high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Act12 inoculation reduced the diversity of rhizosphere bacteria. The Act12 and nutrients did not change dominant phyla i.e. , Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Gemmatimonadetes, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria, but their relative abundance differed among the treatments with: Peat > Act12 > Humic acid > Hoagland's solution. Comparatively, Sphingomonas replaced Thiobacillus as dominant genus after Act12 application. The increase in the Sphingomonas and Flavisolibacter abundances under Act12 and nutrients treatments gave rise to growth-promoting effect on plant. Our results revealed the important role for rhizosphere microbiota in mediating soil biochemical traits and plant growth, and our approach charted a path toward the development of Act12 combined with soil nutrients to enhance soil quality and phytoextraction efficiency in Cd/Zn-contaminated soils.

Enhanced phytoextraction of metals using amendments and hyperaccumulator plants is a promising alternative to expensive traditional remediation techniques. The present study comprehensively investigated the effects of six amendments on both mobility and phytoextraction of Cd and the feasibility of integrating amendment with Ramie as a hyperaccumulator plant on Cd-contaminated soil remediation. The leaching of Cd from contaminated soil was significantly enhanced by two chelating agents (i.e., ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethyleneglycoltetraacetic acid (EGTA)), followed by two natural organic acids (i.e., citric acid and tartaric acid), and lastly, two rhizobacteria (i.e., Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens ). Further, the application of EDTA and EGTA had inhibitory effects on the growth of Ramie. The application of two organic acids and two rhizobacteria increased the dry biomass yields of roots, stems, and leaves. In terms of the dry biomass of Ramie, 32.7, 23.4, 50.6, and 53.1% of increases were obtained from the applications of citric acid, tartaric acid, B. subtilis , and P. fluorescens , respectively, as compared with that without any amendment applied. Meanwhile, the applications of all amendments were observed to increase Cd concentrations in aerial parts of the plants, and they were ranked in descending order of Cd accumulation: EDTA > EGTA > tartaric acid > citric acid > B. subtilis ≈ P. fluorescens . Taking Cd removal efficiency, potential environmental risk, and economic factor into consideration, EDTA and citric acid-enhanced phytoremediation using Ramie were feasible and promising approaches for remediating Cd-contaminated soil in real practice.

Farmland mercury (Hg) pollution poses a significant threat to human health, but there is a lack of highly efficient phytoextraction for its remediation at present. This study investigates the impact of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) on the phytoextraction capabilities of Pennisetum giganteum ( P. giganteum ) in Hg-contaminated soil. Our research indicates that amending γ-PGA to soil markedly enhances the assimilation of soil Hg by P. giganteum and transformation of Hg within itself, with observed increases in Hg concentrations in roots, stems, and leaves by 1.1, 4.3, and 18.9 times, respectively, compared to the control. This enhancement is attributed to that γ-PGA can facilitate the hydrophilic and bioavailable of soil Hg. Besides, γ-PGA can stimulate the abundance of Hg-resistance bacteria Proteobacteria in the rhizosphere of P. giganteum , thus increasing the mobility and uptake of soil Hg by P. giganteum roots. Moreover, the hydrophilic nature of Hg-γ-PGA complexes supports their transport via the apoplastic pathway , across the epidermis, and through the Casparian strip , eventually leading to immobilization in the mesophyll tissues. This study provides novel insights into the mechanisms of Hg phytoextraction, demonstrating that γ-PGA significantly enhances the effectiveness of P. giganteum in Hg uptake and translocation. The findings suggest a promising approach for the remediation of Hg-contaminated soil, offering a sustainable and efficient strategy for environmental management and health risk mitigation.

Making municipal sludge into garden soil is a challenging issue in land using due to the high content of heavy metals, however phytoremediation can reduce the heavy metal pollution in the soil. Three artificial regulators were used in combination to improve phytoremediation of heavy metals by Bryophyllum laetivirens from municipal sludge made garden (MSMG) soil. Results showed that B. laetivirens grew well in MSMG soil and bioaccumulated Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Ni by 2.16–11.0 times higher than those grew in local common garden soil. The application of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and microbial liquid (BL) promoted the bioaccumulation of heavy metals of plants in MSMG soil, with 2.1–6.8 times than the control group. The optimum dose for the phytoremediation of B. laetivirens was the combining treatment of 3 mmol kg −1 EDTA, 10 −10 M IAA, and 5 ml kg −1 BL, which has been successfully applied in MSMG soil. EDTA treatment is more direct and effective in facilitating HM uptake of root, while the other two treatments play important roles in promoting the transport of HMs in plants.

In accordance with a new international standard set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission for cadmium (Cd) content in rice grain, Japan must perform large-scale remediation of paddy fields polluted with low to moderate levels of Cd. Phytoextraction using hyperaccumulating wild plants has been proposed as a low-cost, environmentally friendly restoration technology. However, because of difficulties with sowing, weed and disease control, and harvesting, hyperaccumulators may not be suitable for large-scale phytoextraction in polluted paddy fields. Here, we demonstrated phytoextraction using Indica-type rice cultivars capable of accumulating Cd at high levels. Phytoextraction with the Indica rice Chokoukoku grown for 2 years without irrigation after drainage removed 883 g Cd ha−1, reduced the total soil Cd content by 38%, and reduced the grain Cd content in subsequently grown Japonica food rice by 47% without decreasing yield. The results suggest that phytoextraction with Chokoukoku can remove Cd from paddy fields polluted with low to moderate levels of Cd and reduce the grain Cd concentration of Japonica food rice cultivars to below the Codex standard within a reasonable time frame. This approach will help reduce the risk of Cd contamination of rice from paddy fields.

A promising new composite filler with hygroscopic and antibacterial properties was developed based on the Fructus Aurantii Immaturus solid residues (FAIR) from Citrus aurantium L. , a typical bulk forest industrial crops. FAIR@AM-APTAC composite filler was established using FAIR as substrate, allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) as the cross-linker, while functional monomers of acrylamide (AM) and (3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (APTAC) were introduced. The structure of FAIR@AM-APTAC was characterized by FTIR, SEM, BET and TG–DSC analysis. The results confirmed that the FAIR@AM-APTAC composite filler was successfully prepared, which exhibited a three-dimensional(3D) network structure with a specific surface area of 0.1758 m²/g and exhibited excellent thermal stability. The equilibrium percent moisture absorption of FAIR@AM-APTAC (63.0%) was higher than that of FAIR (15.7%) under RH= 80% at 25 ℃ for 48 h, and much better moisture adsorption was achieved. The moisture adsorption process of FAIR@AM-APTAC followed a type III moisture adsorption isotherm and conformed to GAB, Peleg and pseudo-second order kinetics model. The moisture adsorption process of FAIR@AM-APTAC was a multi-layer adsorption process with enthalpy driven non-spontaneous and endothermic, which was dominated by chemical adsorption simultaneous existing physical adsorption, and the adsorption force was the synergy of both hydrogen bond and van der Waals force. The inhibition ratio of FAIR@AM-APTAC was 97.1% for E. coli and 95.4% for S. aureus . The antimicrobial efficacy of FAIR@AM-APTAC was enormously improved compared with that of FAIR due to the introduction of quaternary ammonium groups. The antibacterial mechanism of FAIR@AM-APTAC may be that the surface contact between bacterial and FAIR@AM-APTAC leads to inactivation. Significantly, FAIR@AM-APTAC showed long-acting hygroscopic and antibacterial properties, with little weakness even after 120 times cycle of wetting-drying. It is expected to be applied to an indoor air purifier or filter.

Phytoremediation of contaminated soil is an in-situ reclamation technique for removal of potentially toxic metals through hyperaccumulator plants. Potherb mustard ( Brassica juncea, Coss. ) is less explored for its assisted phytoextraction potential to restore and accelerate potentially toxic metals removal from smelter-contaminated soil. In this study, different levels of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) alone and combined with citric acid (CA) and oxalic acid (OA) were applied in a greenhouse pot experiment. Chelates added on 25th d and 25/35th d after sowing, enhanced cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) bioavailability in soil due to complexation. As a result, Cd and Zn in shoot and root were significantly amplified by 1.7, 2.15 and 1.93, 2.7 folds than control, respectively. Shoot and root dry weight significantly reduced and ranged between 4.13–9.91 and 0.21–0.77 g pot −1 , respectively. The toxicity induced by potentially toxic metals in plant imposed a series of biological responses. Plant antioxidants like Phenylalanine ammomialyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) Catalase (CAT) content increased, except the peroxidase (POD) with the addition of chelating agents . Besides, biological concentration factor (BCF) of Cd and Zn, translocation factor (TF) of Cd were notably elevated (>1.0), while TF of Zn was reduced. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive relation between DTPA-extractable and shoot concentration of Cd and Zn, whereas it showed negative correlation with plant dry weight. In general, chelate-assisted phytoremediation of smelter contaminated soil proved effective in this study, and followed the order: EDTA > EDTA + CA ≈ EDTA + OA > CK.

Adding exogenous low-molecular weight organic acids is an effective technique to improve phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil and has been well documented, but how acid application rate affects remediation efficiency and its underlying limiting factors remains elusive. We investigated this using pot experiments with rapeseed ( Brassica napus L.) as the model plant. Plastic pots packed with a sandy loam contaminated by Cd at 4.838 mg/kg were amended with acetic acid, oxalic acid , citric acid , malic acid and tartaric acid, respectively, at an application rate gradient varying from 0.0 to 12.0 mmol/kg. Plants in each pot were harvested after growing for five months, and we then measured the exchangeable, carbonate, Fe–Mn oxide, organic and residual Cd in the rhizosphere, as well as Cd in both roots and shoots. The results showed that all organic acids improved plant uptake of Cd and, compared with the control without acid addition, they could improve Cd uptake by more than 100%. The enhanced Cd extraction was due to the increase in exchangeable Cd in the rhizosphere. Plant Cd was weakly correlated to the amount of Cd lost from a unit volume of the rhizosphere due to root extraction ( R 2 = 0.06), but a good negative correlation was found between them after normalizing the lost Cd by root biomass ( R 2 = 0.36). Mass balance analysis revealed that the average Cd content in soil (rhizosphere and bulk soils combined) was much higher than the Cd content in the rhizosphere, and the improved Cd mobility after acid addition was thus due to the increased chelation. As diffusion of ligands in water is one order in magnitude smaller than diffusion of Cd ions, our results suggested that Cd migration from the bulk soil into the rhizosphere was a major factor limiting Cd phytoextraction by rapeseed after adding the exogenous organic acids.

Plant growth regulators (PGR) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have the potential in phytoremediation of heavy metals (HMs) contaminated soils. However, their sole application may not yield the optimal results, thus necessitating the combined application. The present study aimed to enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of Sedum alfredii Hance ( S. alfredii ) in acidic and alkaline soils through the combination of PGR (Brassinolide, BR) and PGPB ( Pseudomonas fluorescens , P. fluorescens ). The combination of BR and P. fluorescens (BRB treatment) effectively increased the removal efficiency of S. alfredii for Cd, Pb, and Zn by 355.2 and 155.3 %, 470.1 and 128.9 %, and 408.4 and 209.6 %, in acidic and alkaline soils, respectively. Moreover, BRB treatment led to a substantial increase in photosynthetic pigments contents and antioxidant enzymes activities, resulting in a remarkable increase in biomass (86.71 and 47.22 %) and dry mass (101.49 and 42.29 %) of plants grown in acidic and alkaline soils, respectively. Similarly, BRB treatment significantly elevated the Cd (109.4 and 71.36 %), Pb (174.9 and 48.03 %), and Zn levels (142.8 and 104.3 %) in S. alfredii shoots, along with cumulative accumulation of Cd (122.7 and 79.47 %), Pb (183.8 and 60.49 %), and Zn (150.7 and 117.9 %), respectively. In addition, the BRB treatment lowered the soil pH and DTPA-HMs contents, while augmenting soil enzymatic activities, thereby contributing soil microecology and facilitating the HMs absorption and translocation by S. alfredii to over-ground tissues. Furthermore, the evaluation of microbial community structure in phyllosphere and rhizosphere after remediation revealed the shift in microbial abundance. The combined treatment altered the principal effects on S. alfredii HMs accumulation from bacterial diversity to the soil HMs availability. In summary, our findings demonstrated that synergistic application of BR and P. fluorescens represents a viable approach to strengthen the phytoextraction efficacy of S. alfredii in varying soils.
