Picromerite is an important material for producing potash fertilizer. However, picromerite exhibited a poor recovery in the practical flotation process. In this study, we propose a strategy to improve the recovery by surface roughness modification with ultrasonic treatment. SEM images show that the surface morphology became rougher after ultrasonic treatment. Flotation tests demonstrate that the recovery of picromerite increased from the original 79.85% to 90.24% after ultrasonic treatment for 60 min. The mechanism of enhanced flotation was further analyzed with the help of adhesion-desorption force, surface wettability, collector adsorption, and XPS analysis, which indicated that ultrasonic treatment makes the surface more hydrophobic and exposed additional magnesium adsorption sites, thereby facilitating more effective reagent adsorption on the picromerite surface. The method of surface roughness modification by ultrasonic treatment proposed in this work provides a novel way to improve the flotation efficiency, which holds significant potential for enhancing the recovery of other similar soluble or semi-soluble minerals.

Particle shape plays an important role in flotation. The strategy of regulating particle morphology during crystallization process to make it more suitable for flotation was proposed. Crystalline particles were more regular than ground particles, and mainly in a cubic-like shape. The results of micro flotation tests indicated that crystalline samples floated better than ground samples in a wide size range. Adsorption capacity tests suggested that there was almost no difference in the adsorption amount of SDBS between ground and crystalline sample. Morphology analysis and bubble-particle attachment experiment demonstrated that the geometric features of crystalline particles facilitated the longer three-phase lines, making the attachment between crystalline sample and bubble more stable, which could be thought as the main reason for the higher floatability of crystalline sample. The novel strategy called “crystal-regulation flotation” could provide an innovative idea for the flotation of soluble potassium salt and promote the development of flotation technology.

Common reverse flotation is difficult to separate efficiently picromerite with a high halite content. This work employed direct flotation to separate picromerite and halite, using sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a novel picromerite collector. The flotation performances were evaluated by single and real ore flotation tests, with results indicating that K + recovery was 95.89%, while Na + content was less than 2% in the concentrate at an SDBS dosage of 200 g/t, which suggested SDBS was an effective picromerite collector with excellent separation performance. The interaction mechanism was investigated by adsorption experiment, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The adsorption experiments demonstrated that picromerite had a stronger affinity to SDBS than halite, confirming that SDBS exhibited good selectivity in the flotation of picromerite and halite. FTIR and SEM-EDS analysis revealed that SDBS adsorbed on the picromerite surface. XPS results further unveiled that SDBS chemisorbed on the picromerite surface through the strong complexation between sulfonic acid groups and Mg atoms on the picromerite surface, forming O-Mg bonds. This study provides a new perspective on the efficient separation of picromerite and halite, facilitating a high production efficiency of picromerite.
