Developing hydrogen sensors with parts per billion-level detection limits, high response, and high stability is crucial for ensuring safety across various industries (e.g., hydrogen fuel cells, chemical manufacturing, and aerospace). Despite extensive research on parts per billion-level detection, it still struggles to meet stringent requirements. Here, high performance and ppb-level H2 sensing have been developed with palladium-doped iron oxide nanotubes (Pd@Fe2O3 NTs), which have been prepared by FeCl3·6H2O, PdCl2, and PVP electrospinning and air calcination techniques. Various characterization techniques (FESEM, TEM, XRD, and so forth) were used to prove that the nanotube structure was successfully prepared, and the doping of Pd nanoparticles was realized. The experiments show that palladium doping can significantly improve the gas response of iron oxide nanotubes. Specifically, 0.59 wt % Pd@Fe2O3 NTs have high response (Ra/Rg = 41,000), high selectivity, and excellent repeatability for 200 ppm hydrogen at 300 °C. Notably, there was still a significant response at a low detection limit (LOD) of 50 ppb (Ra/Rg = 16.8). This excellent hydrogen sensing performance may be attributed to the high surface area of the nanotubes, the p–n heterojunction of PdO/Fe2O3, which allows more oxygen to be adsorbed on the surface, and the catalytic action of Pd nanoparticles, which promotes the reaction of hydrogen with surface-adsorbed oxygen.

The room temperature gas sensor has attracted sufficient attention due to the fact that low-power products are more suitable for practical environments. However, developing gas sensors with low detection limits remains challenging. In this paper, a room-temperature sensor was prepared by in situ growth of WO 3 nanospheres on SnO 2 inverse opal (IO) by aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method, detecting ppb level of ammonia. The WO 3 nanospheres are directly fabricated on IO, and their elemental composition, morphology and structure is characterized using XRD, SEM and TEM. The results show that WO 3 nanospheres have been prepared on SnO 2 IO successfully. It showes that the WO 3 /SnO 2 (WS) type sensor has a detection limit as low as 1 ppb at room temperature from the gas sensitivity data. In addition, the sensor's response value to 100 ppm NH 3 reached 65 %. Its excellent sensing performance depends on the distinctive morphology features of WO 3 and SnO 2 . The hierarchical characteristic effectively enhances the sensing performance for NH 3 . Consequently, this presents a feasible solution for fabricating the room temperature NH 3 sensor.

The real-time and effective detection of n-butanol gas is particularly important in production and daily life due to its flammability, toxicity, and potential hazards to the environment. This article reports the preparation of hollow indium oxide spheres and rGO/In 2 O 3 composites through a simple hydrothermal and subsequent heat treatment method. Test results indicate that the gas sensitivity of n-butanol can be significantly improved through rGO composites. The prepared hollow indium oxide spheres are composed of nanosheets with a diameter of probably 500 nm. After combination by rGO, the specific surface area and the proportion of adsorbed oxygen of the material are increased, both of which are advantageous for enhancing gas sensitivity abilities. At the optimum operating temperature of 160 °C, the response value of rGO/In 2 O 3 complex sensor is 51–50 ppm of n-butanol, which is 3.6 times the response of pure In 2 O 3 . Gas sensors composed of rGO/In 2 O 3 exhibit ultra-fast response time and low detection limit. Even for ppb grade (100 ppb) n-butanol gas, the response value is still 2.3. These characteristics make rGO/In 2 O 3 a promising material for the preparation of high-performance n-butanol gas sensors. Besides, the gas-sensitive mechanism of the enhanced n-butanol sensing performances is also analyzed.

Constructing heterostructures is an effective strategy to improve the performance of semiconductor metal oxide . The heterostructure exhibits strong interaction between tightly packed interfaces, showing better performance than a single structure. Therefore, indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 )/tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) composites were synthesized with heterojunction by a simple hydrothermal method to enhance the gas sensing performance of WO 3 . The WO 3 and In 2 S 3 exist in the form of nanoparticles . Then the gas sensing test of the material was carried out, by exploring the performance of WO 3 based on doping different amounts of In 2 S 3 , the response of WO 3 based on 3 wt% In 2 S 3 to 10 parts per million (ppm) nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is 170.1 at the optimum operating temperature of 170 °C. Compared with pure WO 3 , the response is enhanced by seven times. Besides, the detection limit of the sample is low. The minimum detection concentration of NO 2 can reach 20 parts per billion (ppb). The reason for the improved performance can be attributed to the wider electron depletion layer or hole accumulation layer formed by the heterojunction for electron transfer . Finally, a convenient wearable NO 2 Real-time Detection System is designed to detect different concentrations of NO 2 in the factory, which provides an effective alarm mean for the excessive emission of industrial waste gas in the factory environment.

ABSTRACT The demand of acetone gas sensors with great response value and fast response/recovery time to low concentration acetone is increasing in practical diagnosis for diabetes. In this work, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived flower-like ZnO/Co 3 O 4 heterojunctions based sensor is prepared by a simple solution mixing method at room temperature. The sensor shows high acetone response value, short response/recovery time, excellent selectivity and good stability. For example, the response value of ZnO/Co 3 O 4 heterojunctions based sensor is up to 120 % towards 500 ppb acetone at 300 ℃, which is about 30-fold enhancement than these of intrinsic ZnO and Co 3 O 4 . Moreover, its minimal detection limitation is 100 ppb acetone and it shows ultra-fast response/recovery time for ppb-level acetone (22 s/27 s@500 ppb). The excellent acetone sensing properties of flower-like ZnO/Co 3 O 4 heterojunctions based sensor is attributed to the sharp resistance variation of heterojunction interface between ZnO and Co 3 O 4 and the ultra-fast gas transport channel provided by ZnO nanosheets. This finding provides important insights and useful guidance for the detection of ppb-level acetone.

The continuous release of harmful gases and increased industrial activities has made environmental monitoring essential for evaluating their impact on human health and ecosystem. In this study, a spherical nanostructure of Nickel (Ni) doped CeO 2 was derived from hydrothermally synthesized cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) via MOF encapsulation-calcination method for ultrasensitive detection of H 2 S at ppb level. The physical characterizations and microstructure of the Ni-CeO 2 composite revealed porous surface with a hollow spherical framework structure. The H 2 S gas-sensing performance of CeO 2 increased with Ni doping and exhibited remarkable sensitivity up to 100 ppb at low operational temperature. Notably, Ni-CeO 2 -6 composite shows an improved response of 108 (R a /R g ) at an operational temperature of 100°C. Furthermore, NC-6 displays good linearity (R 2 =0.998) towards H 2 S concentration with a low detection limit (8.68 ppb). The composite nanostructure shows good humid tolerance with minimum response deviation (6 %), on increasing the relative humidity (RH) from 15 % to 60 % at room temperature. In addition to this, the composite nanostructure shows excellent selectivity towards H 2 S, combined with good repeatability, and sustained stability. The enhanced response of Ni-doped CeO 2 can be correlated with increased surface area, porous morphology, and reactive oxygen sites on the surface. The study reveals the synergistic interplay of MOF-derived framework and Ni doping for increasing oxygen vacancies and enhancing the surface reactivity for improved gas-sensing performance.
