Achieving high energy storage in BaTiO3/rGO/PVDF nanocomposites by regulating the charge transfer path at the hetero-interface

Yange Yu,Wenzhu Shao,Yue Liu,Yang Li,Jing Zhong,Huijian Ye,Liang Zhen

Superior energy storage performance of PVDF-based nanocomposites such as discharged energy density or efficiency is reported, leading to a lower volume, lightweight system, or high reliability for film capacitors. However, researchers often ignore exploring practical ways to simultaneously enhance the discharged energy density (Ue) and energy storage efficiency (η) as well as the physical mechanism that determines the energy storage performance. Herein, the charge transfer path in the PVDF matrix with core–shell nanoparticles under 150 MV m−1 was first analyzed by finite element simulation. Under the guidance of theoretical simulation, core–shell structured BaTiO3 (BTO)@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoparticles (NPs) were introduced into the PVDF matrix, in which rGO played the trapping role. The introduction of rGO reduces the possibility of local electric field failure of composite materials, optimizing the charge transfer path and improving both Ue and η, which are superior to the data in the literature. An effective strategy for creating high-energy storage polymer nanocomposites is presented in this study.

Heterojunction-Engineered MgO@rGO/PVDF-HFP Flexible Films for Highly Efficient Piezocatalytic Degradation and Antibacterial Applications

Yechen Wang,Hao Yu,Sufang Guo,Qi An

In this work, PVDF-HFP-based piezoelectric composite films incorporating MgO and rGO nanofillers were fabricated via a facile phase-separation method. The influences of filler composition and loading amount on their piezocatalytic and antibacterial performances were systematically investigated. MgO@rGO/PVDF-HFP film (4 wt % of MgO and 4 wt % of rGO) exhibited the best piezocatalytic activity, achieving rapid degradation on RhB, MO, and MB dyes with high efficiencies of 95.88%, 91.42%, and 98.15%, respectively. The dyes were not only decolorized but also further mineralized into inorganic carbon. The composite film also demonstrated excellent antibacterial performance, reaching 100% inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus upon ultrasonication. The superior catalytic behavior is attributed to the formation of the MgO@rGO heterojunction, which optimizes the energy band for the redox reaction, thereby promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Under ultrasonic excitation, the MgO@rGO/PVDF-HFP film produced substantially higher ·O2–, ·OH, and H2O2 levels than the other films, and ROS-trapping experiments confirmed ·OH and electrons as the primary active species. These enhancements arise from efficient charge transfer across the MgO@rGO interface and chemically induced polarization within the PVDF-HFP matrix, which together strengthen the piezoelectric response. This study demonstrates that constructing heterojunction nanofillers in flexible polymers is an effective strategy to enhance piezocatalysis for environmental purification and antimicrobial applications.

Enhancing the efficiency of PVDF-based piezoelectric catalysis through water-induced polarization and a micro-nano-composite strategy

Haitao Li,Yingying Zhang,Han Dai,Veronica Pereir,Junfeng Zhao,Hiang Kwee Lee

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based piezoelectric catalysts show promise in mechanical force-driven catalysis due to their good biocompatibility, flexibility, and ease of fabrication. However, the catalytic activity of pristine PVDF is limited due to its low piezoelectric phase content (<20%), poor orientation, and low surface carrier concentration. Here, we introduce an efficient PVDF-based composite nano-catalyst (rGO/PVDF) with high piezoelectric catalytic performance. We achieve this by employing a composite strategy that combines nanoscale water-induced polarization with polar functional group-modified graphene (rGO) serving as a nanoelectrode. The nanoscale water polarization effect, together with the two-dimensional planar structure of PVDF and the modified graphene's polar functional groups, effectively induces orientation in the PVDF piezoelectric phase to increase the functional β phase content. As a result, the β phase content and crystallinity of rGO/PVDF reach 95% and 40%, respectively, which are 600% and 170% higher compared to those of pristine PVDF. This enhancement plays a crucial role in endowing the material with strong force-to-electricity conversion characteristics. Additionally, the surface-modified rGO also boosts PVDF's surface carrier concentration and provides active sites for catalysis on the rGO/PVDF composite. Notably, under optimized conditions, our catalyst achieves a ∼99.1% degradation rate of organic pollutants (10 mg L−1) after 12 minutes of sonication at 240 W and maintains a high efficiency of ∼93.7% even at a 10 times higher pollutant concentration (100 mg L−1). Our piezoelectric catalyst also demonstrates efficient H2O2 production at 95.8 mmol grGO−1 h−1, which is ∼9-fold and ∼134-fold higher than those of untreated PVDF and previously reported PVDF-based piezoelectric catalysts, respectively. This work paves the way for the development of highly efficient PVDF-based piezoelectric catalysts, thereby offering valuable insights for the advancement of mechanically driven catalysis in the environmental, energy, and chemical sectors.

A novel high-performance IIP@PPy/rGO@PVDF composite membrane for the selective recovery of lithium-ion via an external-voltage-driven process

Zheng Li,Xin Song,Wenke Li,Xiaolong Ding,Lianjie Li,Meijun Liu,Lanhe Zhang,Chuntao Zhu,Zicheng Chen

A novel lithium (Li) ion-imprinted composite membrane (IIP@PPy/rGO@PVDF) was developed for the selective recovery of Li + through an external-voltage-driven process. This membrane was synthesized by integrating ion-imprinting technology with electrochemically switched ion exchange technology, presenting a highly promising technique for the efficient extraction of Li from brine. The IIP@PPy/rGO@PVDF membrane consisted of polypyrrole (PPy), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), 12-crown 4-ether (12C4), and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDGMA). Furthermore, leveraging the electric field and specific recognition of 12C4 toward Li + , the membrane exhibited excellent ionic adsorption performance, including a high adsorption capacity of 214 mg.g −1 , a superior retention ratio (Maintaining the initial value even after 10 cycles of electrochemical adsorption–desorption), a short equilibration time of <25 min, and an adsorption capacity of 98 mg.g −1 at pH = 1. Subsequently, variations in the average heat of adsorption indicated that the electric field enhanced the adsorption performance. These performances were attributable to the synergistic effects of rGO with PPy. Therefore, IIP@PPy/rGO@PVDF serves as an outstanding candidate for Li extraction in environments with high applied voltages and strong acidity.
