Sec-butanol as a bifunctional electrolyte additive to effectively improve electrochemical performance of V2O5//Zn battery

Shuo Yang,Guangpeng Wu,Jing Zhang,Yuning Guo,Yushuang Chen,Yuanmin Zhu,Xiaofeng Zhang,Liujiang Zhou

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as a promising energy storage device owing to their inherent safety, cost-effectiveness, and environment friendliness. However, their commercialization is hindered by critical challenges, including severe dendrite growth and poor electrochemical performance stemming from an inefficient cathode-electrolyte interaction, thus leading to inevitable short circuits and significant capacity decay. Herein, sec-butanol (SBT) is applied as a bifunctional electrolyte additive in a 1 M Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 aqueous electrolyte to achieve high-performance AZIBs. Profiting from the strong coordination and adsorption capabilities, SBT effectively reshapes the solvation structure of Zn 2+ ions in the electrolyte and inhibits the two-dimensional diffusion of Zn 2+ ions. Moreover, SBT also enhances the wettability of the electrolyte on the V 2 O 5 cathode, facilitating better electrode–electrolyte interactions. Benefiting from those positive effects, the Cu//Zn half cell with SBT demonstrates stable cycling performance over 1000 cycles at 5 mA cm −2 in the modified electrolyte, markedly outperforming cells with pure aqueous electrolyte. Most notably, the V 2 O 5 //Zn full battery achieves a remarkable capacity of 247.78 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 in the modified electrolyte, significantly surpassing the performance of systems without SBT.

Design and fabrication of choline-functionalized shaped polymer catalysts for efficient catalytic synthesis of sec-butanol

Miaomiao Cui,Peixin Hong,Yaxin Cai,Yongsheng Lin,Xiaoyan Chen,Ting Qiu,Jie Chen

Sec-butanol (SBA) is an important industrial medium-polar solvent, mainly used as methyl ethyl ketone precursor and in coatings, fuels, fine chemicals. Transesterification is its dominant synthesis route for economical feedstocks and easy downstream separation. However, industrial homogeneous catalysts suffer from separation difficulties, equipment corrosion, and poor continuous operability, and heterogeneous catalysts often exhibit relatively low catalytic activity. To balance catalytic activity and industrial application, a heterogeneous catalyst was firstly prepared by anchoring choline-based ionic liquids on swellable Ps-Cl (optimized swelling enhanced active site accessibility). Then, choline-functionalized supported shaped catalyst (Ps-Ch[IM]) was obtained via quaternization of macroporous styrene-based polymers with N,N’ -dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) and ion exchange. Under reaction temperature of 60 o C, alcohol-to-ester molar ratio 5:1, catalyst dosage 5 % (mass) and reaction time 240 min, Ps-Ch[IM] achieved 26.60% sec-butyl acetate (SBAC) conversion, surpassing reported literature results. DFT calculation and in situ DRIFTS confirmed that Ps-Ch[IM] activates methanol (MeOH) via [IM] - and SBAC via the OH group in DMEA; subsequently, CH 3 O* attacks the C=O bond in SBAC and combines with CH 3 CO* to form MA, while the proton combines with *OCH(CH 3 )CH 2 CH 3 to yield the target product SBA. Moreover, Ps-Ch[IM] shown stable performance in continuous fixed-bed reaction with the yield of 20.86% after 1800 min, indicates industrial application potential.

Efficient synthesis of sec-butanol from sec-butyl acetate under mild conditions with the basic ionic liquid catalysts

Chengming Wu,Zhanyang Gao,Yi Wang,Yunbai Luo

Three kinds of imidazolide basic ionic liquids were prepared and employed as efficient catalysts for the synthesis of sec -butanol from the transesterification of sec -butyl acetate and methanol. The effect of anions and cations of basic ionic liquids on the catalytic activity were explored, and the relationship between their catalytic activities and basicities was established. Among various of basic ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium imidazolide ([Bmim]Im) performed better and was chosen for the further studying the influence of experimental conditions. The conversion of sec -butyl acetate reached 90.4% at 60 °C for 60 min under ambient pressure. In addition, the catalyst [Bmim]Im was repeatedly used for five times without noticeable drop in activity and obvious change in chemical structure. The reaction mechanism of the transesterification catalysed by [Bmim]Im was also proposed.

Self-catalytic immobilization of choline-based ionic liquid on SiO2 and its application in transesterification for sec-butanol synthesis

Peixin Hong,Fengyue Yin,Rongkai Cui,Yongsheng Lin,Xiaoyan Chen,Ting Qiu,Jie Chen

Sec -butyl alcohol (SBA) is a crucial chemical intermediate and solvent in organic synthesis. The transesterification of sec -butyl acetate (SBAC) with methanol (MeOH) is a key SBA production process due to straightforward reaction conditions and raw materials easily available, but conventional catalysts suffer from high corrosivity and poor recyclability, increasing costs. Herein, we report a series of novel heterogeneous catalysts of TEOS-[Ch][Im]- x with differential loading amount of choline imidazolate ([Ch][Im]) supported on SiO 2 . [Ch][Im], for the first time, is employed not only as a basic catalyst to facilitate the formation of SiO 2 , but also as a catalytic moiety immobilized on the SiO 2 matrix via H-O hydrogen bonds, thus enabling the fabrication of efficient SiO 2 -based catalysts through a one-pot reaction. By optimization of catalytic conditions for optimal catalyst TEOS-[Ch][[Im]-12, over 50% SBAC conversion is achieved in 60 min, and the conversion rate reaches 61.58% under the reaction temperature of 67 ℃ , nMeOH: nSBAC = 8.8:1, and catalyst dosage 9 wt% conditions after response surface methodology (RSM) optimization. More importantly, the catalyst exhibits excellent reusability and cycling stability without any noticeable deactivation over five consecutive reaction cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy ( in situ DRIFTs) results further confirm that the functionalized [Im] − anions could activate methanol to form the key adsorbed CH 3 O* intermediate, which then undergoes a nucleophilic reaction with SBAC to yield SBA. This facile synthetic strategy thus endows the catalyst with considerable application potential for green catalytic transesterification processes.
