Adsorption study of sesbania gum onto calcite surface: Implications for smithsonite-calcite flotation separation

Yanfei Chen,Xueyi Guo,Yuanlin Chen

In the present study, sesbania gum (SG) was introduced as a depressant to achieve the selective flotation separation of smithsonite from calcite , and the deep adsorption mechanism was systematically examined using a variety of methods, including density functional theory (DFT) calculation and a series of advanced analytical manners. Micro-flotation experiments indicated that SG strongly depressed the flotation of calcite at pH 9.5, while having little impact on the flotation of smithsonite, leading to the successful separation of the two minerals. DFT calculation predicted that SG could be adsorbed onto the calcite surface, but not onto the hydroxylated smithsonite surface in an aqueous solution system. This was supported by zeta potential tests, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) detection. As a result, the adsorption of sodium oleate (NaOL) onto the calcite surface was hindered by the pre-adsorption of SG, while the adsorption of NaOL onto the smithsonite surface was not affected. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscope (AFM) tests confirmed that SG was mainly adsorbed onto the calcite surface via physical adsorption . This finding provided a new perspective for the interaction between mineral and hydroxyl containing depressant.

Preparation and properties of poly(lactic acid)/sesbania gum/nano-TiO2 composites

Zhang Qing,Li Deling,Zhang Hongxia,Su Guixian,Li Guanghui

Poly(lactic acid)/sesbania gum/nano-TiO 2 composites were prepared by melt blending in the mixing chamber of a torque rheometer in this work. The processing rheological properties, mechanical properties, morphologies, thermal properties, and optical properties of the resulting composites were evaluated. Effects of nano-TiO 2 content and plasticizer content on the processing rheological properties and mechanical properties of composites were discussed. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs clearly revealed good dispersion of nano-TiO 2 aggregates in the matrix at the low nano-TiO 2 content, while higher content contributed to easy aggregation within the matrix, which was consistent with the results of mechanical properties, thermal properties, and optical properties. As for the processing rheological properties, a reasonable choice of nano-TiO 2 and plasticizer content should be made depending on the used processing equipment and process.

Synergistic Flame Retardancy of Phosphatized Sesbania Gum/Ammonium Polyphosphate on Polylactic Acid

Qing Zhang,Huiyuan Liu,Junxia Guan,Xiaochun Yang,Baojing Luo

Phosphating sesbania gum (DESG) was obtained by modifying sesbania gum (SG) with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and endic anhydride (EA). The structure of DESG was determined using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). Flame-retardant polylactic acid (PLA) composites were prepared by melt-blending PLA with DESG, which acted as a carbon source, and ammonium polyphosphate (APP), which acted as an acid source and a gas source. The flame retardancy of the PLA composite was investigated using vertical combustion (UL-94), the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and the cone calorimeter (CONE) test. Thermal properties and morphology were characterized via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Experimental results indicated that when the mass ratio of DESG/APP was equal to 12/8 the LOI value was 32.2%; a vertical burning test (UL-94) V-0 rating was achieved. Meanwhile, the sample showed a lowest total heat release (THR) value of 52.7 MJ/m2, which is a 32.5% reduction compared to that of neat PLA. Using FESEM, the uniform distribution of DESG and APP in the PLA matrix was observed. The synergistic effect of DESG and APP effectively enhanced the flame retardancy of PLA. Additionally, the synergistic mechanism of DESG and APP in PLA was proposed. Keywords:polylactic acid;sesbania gum;ammonium polyphosphate;flame retardancy

Fibrous membranes of poly(ethylene oxide)/Sesbania gum oxide/ε-poly(lysine): An influence on its structure

Jiale Zhao,Hengfu Huan,Tao Yang,Jian Chen,Guanglong Yao

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was used to modify a natural polymer, sesbania gum (SG), to prepare oxidized sesbania gum (OSG) with the aim of investigating the physicochemical properties, antimicrobial activity of polyethylene oxide (PEO), OSG, and ε-poly(lysine) (ε-PL) composite fibre membranes and their applications in fresh-cut mango preservation. The PEO/OSG/ε-PL composite fibre membranes were successfully prepared via solution blow spinning (SBS) technology. The results of a series of characterizations revealed that ε-PL was successfully loaded into the fibrous membranes, exhibited good biocompatibility, and ε-PL was better encapsulated, with the membranes. The hydrophilicity, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and flexibility of the fibrous membranes were improved, and the water vapour transmission rate was reduced with the ε-PL content. In vitro bacterial inhibition experiments revealed that PEO/OSG/ε-PL fibre membranes with more than 2 wt% added ε-PL effectively inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. Fruit preservation experiments showed that PEO/OSG/ε-PL fibre membrane could reduce weight loss, inhibit microbial growth, and delay quality deterioration of fresh-cut mango. In addition, the PEO/OSG/ε-PL fibre membrane showed high biodegradability. These results show that the PEO/OSG/ε-PL composite fibre membrane prepared by SBS has application potential as an active packaging material.

An Energy-Dissipative Sesbania Gum-Grafted Poly(acrylic acid) Binder for SiOx Anode in Li-Ion Batteries

Zhihuan Ye,Zhuowen Zhang,Xianhao Long,Shuxing Wu,Xiujuan Wei,Yang Luo,Kai-Hang Ye,Zhan Lin

Silicon oxide (SiOx) has emerged as one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, ultralow lithiation/delithiation voltage, and abundant natural resource reserves. However, its severe volume expansion and insufficient cycling stability during lithiation–delithiation processes pose significant challenges to practical applications. Herein, an energy-dissipative sesbania gum-grafted-poly(acrylic acid) (SG-g-PAA) binder is fabricated via free-radical-initiated graft copolymerization for SiOx anodes. The SG-g-PAA binder rationally combines the intrinsic elasticity of the natural SG with the stiffness of PAA to construct a mechanically stable framework. The 3D network balances stiffness and elasticity, effectively accommodating the large volumetric changes while preserving electrode structural integrity during cycling. And the synergistic combination of covalent cross-links and dynamic hydrogen bonding further enhance the long-term cycling stability in SiOx anodes. With this binder, the SiOx electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 1134 mAh g–1 after 250 cycles at a current density of 400 mA g–1. The assembled SiOx@SG-g-PAA||NCM622 full cell showed an 88% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.3 C.

Fabrication of multi-network aerogels based on sesbania gum/nanocellulose and its application in oil recovery (from oily wastewater)

Zheng Li,Jie Li,Jing Guo,Fucheng Guan,Xin Zhang,Qiang Yang,Da Bao,Xinbin Ji,Yihang Zhang,Minghan Li,Jiahao He,Yi Xu

Bio-based aerogels possess high porosity, low density, biodegradability, and environmental friendliness, offering significant potential in the field of oil-water separation. In this study, we developed a hydrophobic porous aerogel with a triple cross-linked network consisting of polysaccharide sesbania gum (SG) and nanocellulose (CNF). The aerogel was cross-linked with polyamide epoxy chloropropane resin (PAE) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), followed by MTMS hydrolysis for silane hydrophobic modification. The hydrophobic SG/CNF aerogel (SCA) was prepared through freeze-drying and annealing processes. SCA exhibits excellent properties, including low density (11.83–26.18 mg/cm 3 ), high porosity (98.95–97.8 %), high adsorption capacity (39.4–72.9 g/g), and rapid adsorption. Additionally, the oil adsorbed by SCA can be easily desorbed using centrifugal method. Even after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity remains at 81.8 % of the initial value. Therefore, SCA provides a simple, low-cost, efficient, and recyclable solution for the removal of organic pollutants, offering a sustainable approach for industrial wastewater treatment.

Assessing the in vitro digestion of Sesbania gum, a galactomannan from S. cannabina, and subsequent impact on the fecal microbiota

Mengyi Zhou,Yuheng Tao,Ting Wang,Rong Wang,Qiang Yong

Despite the application as additives to control functional properties of food, little is known about the behavior of Sesbania gum (SG) from Sesbania cannabina seeds, in the gastrointestinal tract. SG is a kind of natural and water-soluble galactomannan consisting of a β-1,4-D-mannan backbone with single α-1,6-galactopyranosyl side branching units every 2.4 residues, mass of which is over 10 6 Da. Using in vitro human digestion models, we elucidated the molecular weight changes of SG during the digestion and fermentation and the interactions between SG and gut microbiota. The results showed that the molecular weight of SG was not obviously changed during the simulated saliva, gastric and small intestinal digestion, but was rapidly decomposed and consumed by gut microbiota. As revealed by RNA‐seq transcriptome analyses, the CAZyme genes encoded by gut bacteria were significantly up-regulated, especially the families GH5 and 4, which target β-mannopyranoside and α-galactopyranoside, respectively. SG degradation led in turn, to changes in the short-chain fatty acid production and microbiota composition as determined by HPLC and 16S-seq, respectively. Our work is helpful to understand some features of SG subjected to the potential digestion and fermentation, and the results suggest SG has potential to be developed as a functional food ingredient for gut health.

Grape seed proanthocyanidin and sesbania gum: A successful strategy to enhance antioxidant capacity and reduce fat while maintaining the physicochemical, sensory, and processability of lamb sausage

Dongsong Yang,Lingping Zhang,Yulong Luo,Ruiming Luo,Yanru Hou

This study explored the effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) in synergy with sesbania gum (SG) on the antioxidant capacity, processability, moisture distribution, microstructure, and sensory properties of lamb sausages, to evaluate their synergistic advantages in improving sausage quality and SG's potential as a fat substitute. Findings revealed that GSP enhanced radical scavenging abilities ( P  < 0.05), while reducing thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and carbonyl content ( P  < 0.05). However, 0.10 % GSP supplementation decreased the degree of network structure polymerization. Adding 5 % SG reduced the fat content and energy value ( P  < 0.05), and promoted transitions in protein secondary structures from α-helix to β-sheet. Dynamic rheological behavior, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy results showed that SG incorporation increased the storage modulus (G') and formed a denser network structure. This structural modification further improved the texture properties (hardness, gumminess, and chewiness) and reduced the shrinkage rate ( P  < 0.05). Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance analysis demonstrated that SG facilitated the conversion of free water to immobilized water and reduced the cooking loss rate ( P  < 0.05). Sensory evaluation pointed out that incorporating 5 % SG as a fat substitute in lamb sausages increased the flavor, juiciness, texture, and acceptability scores. Overall, the synergistic application of 0.10 % GSP and 5 % SG exhibited multiple benefits, namely enhancing antioxidant capacity, reducing fat content, and simultaneously improving the processing properties. These findings indicate that SG serves as a promising fat substitute that enables increased loading capacity of polyphenols without deteriorating the sausage quality.

A sesbania gum/γ-polyglutamic acid photo-crosslinking composite hydrogel loaded with multi-component traditional Chinese medicine extract synergize microenvironment amelioration in infected diabetic wound healing

Guo Chen,Yanan Wu,Yichen Yao,Yumeng Zhu,Hongmei Shi,Minqian Zhao,Shuo Wang,Meijuan Zou,Gang Cheng

The intricate physiological microenvironment of the diabetic wound characterized by overexpressed reactive oxygen species (ROS), persistent inflammation, angiogenetic dysfunction, and bacterial infection impeded the healing process. Herein, a photo-crosslinking composite hydrogel was fabricated based on the methacrylate modification of sesbania gum (SG) and γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA), which could trigger free radical polymerization to form interpenetrating polymer network under 365 nm UV. Meanwhile, the micronized traditional Chinese medicine Huoxue Tongluo extract (HXTL) was encapsulated into the hydrogel to prepare the wound dressing (H-SGPGA). The 1 H NMR and FT-IR successfully confirmed the synthesis of the methacrylate SG (SGMA) and γ-PGA (γ-PGAMA). Then, the enhanced mechanical properties, ROS scavenging (DPPH: 88.2 ± 0.9 %; ABTS+: 90.5 % ± 0.4 %) and the antibacterial capacity (97.04 % ± 0.58 % against S. aureus ) of H-SGPGA was investigated and confirmed in vitro . Finally, in the S. aureus infected diabetic wound model, the in vivo result demonstrated that the H-SGPGA significantly accelerated the diabetic wound repair process (8.31 % ± 5.54 % wound area on day 12) by promoting epidermis regeneration (79.13 % ± 5.99 %), collagen deposition (71.4 % ± 9.1 %), and angiogenesis (294.1 % ± 29.6 % of control group). Therefore, the composite H-SGPGA provided a potential treatment as the hydrogel dressing for the diabetic wound.
