This study aims to investigate the fabrication of composite films using coaxial electrospinning, and the interactions between zein and shellac was investigated through multi-spectroscopic methods. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that shellac quenches the intrinsic fluorescence of zein through both dynamic and static quenching mechanisms, with hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding serving as the primary forces driving this interaction. The zein/shellac composite films exhibited a smooth, bead-free morphology. The addition of shellac significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite films by integrating uniformly into the zein matrix, achieving a maximum tensile strength of 1.15 MPa in the Z-S6 film and an elongation at a break of 55.24%. Additionally, the thermal stability of the zein/shellac composite films improved while their barrier properties were slightly reduced. These findings suggest that incorporating shellac into the zein films enhances their physical properties for food packaging applications.

As an edible coating substrate, the detection of shellac resin has always been an intractable problem. In this paper, an authentication method of shellac resin in shellac-based edible coatings was established. Results showed that the authentication of shellac resin could be skillfully transformed as the identification of 13 targeted metabolites which were monomer compounds of shellac resin. The 13 targeted metabolites were further divided into 6 differential metabolites and 7 common metabolites with the metabonomic method and difference analysis of targeted metabolite contents. Then, four commercial soi-disant shellac-based coating solutions were selected to verify the feasibility of this method, and 7 common metabolites were detected in only one commercial sample, highly consistent with the results of shellac resin. All the above results indicated that the targeted metabolomics approach established in this study could provide a scientific basis for the qualitative authentication of shellac resin in the preservation coating.

As a result of amphipathic oligomers driven by different forces including hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, H-bond, and heat, multiscale emulsion particles can be wrapped. In this paper we attempted to use sodium shellac as a novel biobased wrapping material. The H+, Ca+, and spray-drying methods were employed to solidify the complex vitamin E (VE) emulsion with sodium shellac to fabricate the beads. The VE loading and encapsulation efficiency were used to evaluate the wrapping process. The results show that the microscale VE emulsion particles could easily be wrapped by these three means. However, due to the high solid content of the nanoscale emulsion particles, it was difficult to wrap them by spray-drying method. The beads solidified by H+ had higher VE loading and encapsulation efficiency than those solidified by other methods and even grabbed the hydrophobic molecule VE from the emulsion micelles. At an RVS of 1:4, these two parameters, which are obtained by the nanoscale emulsion particle wrapping process, could reach 18.9 and 64.3% supported by the single driving force of hydrophobic interaction. Above all, this research introduced a novel wrapping material driven by different forces that can aggregate and wrap the emulsion micelles. It can be widely used in the medical, food, and cosmetics industries.

To reduce the cellular components damage and marine ecosystem pollution caused by common chemical sunscreens, natural or biologically derived sunscreen ingredients have become one of the major priorities, due to their effective protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation while minimizing potential health risks. Herein, we develop a novel sunscreen agent, shellac, that is refined from biological sources with good biocompatibility and amphiphilicity. Shellac was first modified with natural source materials through amidation reaction, dextran (DEX), coumarin (CM) or cinnamic (CA), in which the former provided the hydrogen-bonding interaction, and the latter two provided UV absorption performance. The structures of these modified products were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ( 1 HNMR). Then, a plant sunscreen, sinapic acid (SA) was encapsulated into modified shellac nanoparticles (MSNPs), which showed uniform spherical structure observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Zeta potential and nanoparticle analyzer, and the resultant MSNPs were further blended with sunscreen cream matrix. The sunscreen cream showed good enhanced UV-absorption capacity, and the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) increased to above 50. In addition, FTIR and UV-Vis absorption spectra were carried out to explore the possible synergistic effect between functional shellac, SA and sunscreen cream matrix. The obtained MSNPs also have superior biosafety according the cytotoxicity test, which makes them an ideal skin sunscreen agent.

In this study, a novel approach was employed to develop a therapeutic system for colorectal cancer treatment. Specifically, a GelMA/SilMA hydrogel loaded with curcumin-shellac nanoparticles (Cur@Lac NPs) was created. A microfluidic swirl mixer was utilized to formulate stable Cur@Lac NPs, ensuring their consistent and effective encapsulation. The pH-specific release of curcumin from the NPs demonstrated their potential for colon cancer treatment. By carefully regulating the ratio of GelMA (gelatin methacrylate) and SilMA (silk fibroin methacrylate), a GelMA/SilMA dual network hydrogel was generated, offering controlled release and degradation capabilities. The incorporation of SilMA notably enhanced the mechanical properties of the dual network matrix, improving compression resistance and mitigating deformation. This mechanical improvement is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the hydrogel during in vivo applications. In comparison to the direct incubation of curcumin, the strategy of encapsulating curcumin into NPs and embedding them within the GelMA/SilMA hydrogel resulted in more controlled release mechanisms. This controlled release was achieved through the disintegration of the NPs and the swelling and degradation of the hydrogel matrix. The encapsulating strategy also demonstrated enhanced cellular uptake of curcumin, leveraging the advantages of both NPs and in-situ hydrogel injection. This combination ensures a more efficient and sustained delivery of the therapeutic agent directly to the tumor site. Overall, this approach holds significant promise as a smart drug delivery system, potentially improving the efficacy of colorectal cancer treatments by providing targeted, controlled, and sustained drug release with enhanced mechanical stability and biocompatibility.

Shellac, also known as lac, is composed mainly of aleuritic acid. Because of its unique properties, such as high thermoplasticity, oil resistance, cohesion, and insulation, it is used as an adhesive, sealant, and insulating and coating material. The application of shellac as an adhesive can be traced back to ancient times. However, it is difficult to detect traces of shellac in cultural relic samples using traditional techniques. In our work, a carbodiimide method was applied to couple aleuritic acid with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) for the preparation of anti-aleuritic acid polyclonal antibodies (PcAb). Our experiments showed that the anti-aleuritic acid PcAb had good specificity and sensitivity to trace amounts of shellac in the mixture. Under optimized conditions, the coupling product of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and aleuritic acid (BSA-aleuritic acid) was used as an antigen and adsorbed on the solid-phase polystyrene surface. The shellac content was then determined using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (competitive ELISA). In this study, specific anti-aleuritic acid polyclonal antibodies were prepared and successfully applied to the identification of shellac in traditional mortars. We thus discovered and provided a novel method for archaeological research that can be implemented for the identification of ancient adhesive species using immunological technology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in which a competitive ELISA has been used to detect aleuritic acid, a chain polyhydroxy acid with a low molecular weight and a relatively simple structure in shellac.

Sodium shellac constituted of a “surfactant” monomer, which is sensitive to shear stress, exhibits shear-thickening behavior at a low concentration (5 wt %), and reacts with H+ to retain transient high viscosity under shear, is introduced in this study. The steady shear flow test proved that, under a high shear rate, sodium shellac suspension could change from Newtonian fluid to continuous shear-thickening non-Newtonian fluid. The dynamic oscillation test suggested that the sodium shellac solution at low concentrations (0.1 and 1 wt %) under a low shear rate behaved as the viscous fluid (G″ > G′), and the solution at high concentrations (5, 10, and 15 wt %) behaved as the elastic fluid (G″ < G′). Moreover, a high shear rate caused a cross-linking point between the G″ and G′ curve. At a low concentration, it could be the sol–gel point. At a high concentration, it could be the gel–sol point. All of these transforming points were related to the interaction between the sodium clusters. This interaction should be the hydrophobic association between the particles. To prove the assumption, hydrophilic polymer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was employed as the disrupting factor to the hydrophobic association. As expected, the shear-thickening behavior vanished after mixing with PEO, which verified our assumption. On the other hand, the high viscosity of the suspension under shear could be retained by reaction with H+ to solidify the transient hydroclusters under shear. Meanwhile, sodium shellac had great potential as the functional shear thickener, which could modify the rheological property of the polymer with carboxyl groups, e.g., pectin, alginate, or poly(acrylic acid). Thus, this natural and green thicker has great potential in food, medical gel, green adhesive, or cosmetic products.

Particulate matter (PM), composed of tiny solids and liquid droplets in polluted air, poses a serious threat to human health. Traditional air filters usually cause secondary pollution due to their poor degradability. Here, shellac, as an environmentally friendly natural organic material, was successfully applied to fabricate biodegradable air filters. Since pure shellac fiber shows poor mechanical properties and bad light transmittance, we then introduced a small amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the shellac solution to prepare highly efficient air filter membranes by the electrospinning method. The prepared PVP-assisted shellac nanofiber membrane (P-Shellac FME) demonstrated improved filtration efficiencies as high as 95% and 98% for PM2.5and PM10, respectively. The P-Shellac FME also showed good stability, with filtration efficiencies still above 90% and 95% for PM2.5and PM10even after six hours of air filtering under high PM concentrations. The pressure drop going through the filter was only 101 Pa, which is also comparable to the value of 76 Pa obtained using commercial polypropylene nanofibers (PP nanofibers, peeled off from the surgical mask), indicating good air permeability of P-Shellac FME. Additionally, P-Shellac FME also showed the advantages of translucence, biodegradability, improved mechanical properties, and low cost. We believe that the P-Shellac FME will make a significant contribution in the application of air filtration. Keywords:shellac;nanofiber;air filtration;electrospinning method;biodegradability;translucence

The feasibility of co-folding of soy protein isolates (SPI) and shellac by pH-shifting method to induce a protein hydrogel was firstly investigated. SPI and shellac at different mass ratios (1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 2.1, and 2.5 w/w) were co-folded by adjusting pH back to 7, 8, and 9, after unfolding at pH 12. The pH-shifting treatments resulted in the conformational change of SPI and the formation of covalent bonds between SPI and shellac, as confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulfate−polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV–Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and as well as the changes of thermogravimetry. The cold-set hydrogel was prepared from the pH-shifting process by adjust pH to 9 which showed the optimal hardness and rheological properties, accompanied by excellent water-holding capacity (WHC> 90%). Meanwhile, the microscopic observations revealed the formation of uniform microstructure in the gel network. The co-folded hydrogels were proved to have a lower degree of protein hydrolysis (DH) than the same pH-shifted SPI alone during in vitro simulated digestion. Thus, the simple pH manipulation of SPI and shellac may be applied to induce hydrogels, reducing the protein DH during in vitro digestion which provides the potential for delivery of sensitive nutrients.

This study aimed to fabricate an active film incorporating limonin (LM) and resveratrol (RES) within a zein/shellac (ZS) matrix for use in strawberry preservation. Zein/shellac composite films embedded with varying concentrations of LM (0–4%w/w) and RES were successfully fabricated using coaxial electrospinning. The prepared films were comprehensively characterized for their mechanical properties, water vapor permeability (WVP), antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP), and antibacterial efficacy againstE. coliandS. aureus. Mechanical properties and WVP results revealed that the ZSLM4R film exhibited an elongation at break (EBA) of 28.91%, tensile strength (TS) of 0.93 MPa, elastic modulus (EM) of 40.76 MPa, and a WVP of 1.55 g mm/m2. h. kPa. Furthermore, LM and RES increased the antioxidant properties of the composite film. ZSLM4R’s free radical scavenging activities against DPPH and ABTS were 68.14% and 89.69%, respectively. The composite film also demonstrated strong antibacterial efficacy againstE. coliandS. aureus. When applied to strawberries, ZSLM4R packaging effectively extended the fruit’s shelf life compared to the unwrapped and commercial polyethylene (PE) controls. These obtained results indicate that LM/RES-incorporated zein/shellac composites are a promising eco-friendly packaging alternative for preserving perishable fresh produce and extending its shelf life.

Enzyme-driven processes in green industries demand biocatalytic systems that harmonize efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Pickering interfacial biocatalysis (PIB) achieves impressive catalytic efficiency via emulsion-driven reactions, yet its potential is limited by unstable or harmful hydrophobic regulation. Herein, we present a novel synthesis strategy for biomaterials-based particles for PIB with high stability and sustainability through the immobilization of lipases within chitosan microgels enveloped by natural shellac nanoparticles (SNPs). The chitosan matrix establishes a confined microenvironment for lipase stabilization, while the SNPs provide hydrophobic regulation and physical barriers, enhancing Pickering emulsion stability and mitigating droplet coalescence. This system demonstrates high catalytic performance for hexyl hexanoate synthesis, achieving an 11-fold activity enhancement over free lipase in biphasic systems, alongside robust thermal/pH stability and reusability (95.10 % residual activity after 8 recycles and 69.25 % after 16 recycles). The high catalysis efficiency arises from huge interfacial surface area and accelerated interphase mass transfer endowed by Pickering emulsion. Physically embedded natural hydrophobic particles further provide this system with steady hydrophobic regulation and anti-coalescence properties. Crucially, given by the high biocompatibility of all components, this PIB system shows high promise in various applications, including food-grade enzymatic processing, cosmetics, and drug delivery areas.

Lac terpenic acid (LTA), obtained from shellac processing waste, is a sustainable biomass for high-performance materials. We converted LTA into an underwater UV-curable resin via acrylation and copolymerization with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). UV curing underwater accelerated polymerization six-fold compared to that in air, producing coatings with smoother surfaces. At 40 wt% GMA, the coating (LGM0.4) achieved lap-shear strength of 6.66 MPa, bending strength of 14.64 MPa, and tensile strength of 9.22 MPa. It also resisted corrosion from acids, alkalis, high temperatures, etc., and adhered strongly to steel, aluminum, PVC, and glass. Furthermore, it integrated multiple functionalities including hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 107°, self-cleaning and stable orange fluorescence under 365 nm UV irradiation. This work offers a practical and scalable approach to convert shellac waste into high-performance coatings.
