Siderite is a conventional mineral of sedimentary rock and can activate H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Bisphenol A (BPA), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and sodium sulfadiazine are selected as typical micropollutants to be degraded in a siderite-activated H 2 O 2 system. To determine the influence of solution chemistry on siderite-activated Fenton-like reactions, the amount of ·OH was quantified by using benzoic acid as a probe molecule, and then, kinetic fitting was used to analyze the reaction rate. The results showed that in the range of pH values from 3 to 9, the dissolved Fe 2+ and the lattice Fe(Ⅱ) of siderite activate H 2 O 2 to generate ·OH. An increase in siderite dosage and H 2 O 2 concentration favored the generation of ·OH, but higher siderite dosage and H 2 O 2 concentration suppressed the production rate. The inhibition order of anions on the generation of ·OH was confirmed as follows C l − > N O 3 − > S O 4 2 − . Little difference was observed in the presence of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ , while the presence of Mn 2+ significantly promoted the production of ·OH. The suppression of humic acid (HA) became more serious as the HA concentration increased. Cycling experiments proved that the system could still produce ·OH in four cycles, although the production rate experienced a slight decrease. The experimental results suggested the role of siderite in the degradation of organic pollution in the process of in-situ soil and groundwater remediation.

The effective removal of phosphate from wastewater and prevention of eutrophication of water bodies are of great significance. This study develops and compares the phosphorus removal performance of natural siderite with three different modification methods: thermal activation, hydrothermal treatment, and surface precipitation. The calcium-modified siderite composite (SID-Ca) exhibited excellent phosphorus removal performance for low to medium concentration phosphate wastewater (PO 4 3- -P < 15 mg/L), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 33.4 mg/g, which was 7.4 and 5.3 times higher than that of natural siderite (SID) (4.51 mg/g) and hydrothermally treated siderite (SID-H) (6.28 mg/g), respectively. SID-Ca did not show significant differences in adsorption performance at high levels of co-existing ions (SO 4 2- , NO 3 - ) at 500 mg / L. Following characterisation by XRD, XPS, FTIR and MAPPING, it was concluded that the phosphorus removal mechanism of the SID-Ca composites was primarily the inner complexation in ion exchange and ligand exchange. By leveraging the exceptional stability and low cost of natural siderite to develop a modified siderite using straightforward co-precipitation, a novel approach for phosphate adsorption in wastewater was established, and its removal mechanism was elucidated.

Compared with synthetic materials, natural mineral materials have the advantages of low cost and easy availability. In the present study, magnetite was prepared by calcination of natural siderite under an N 2 atmosphere and utilized as a heterogeneous material for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation via peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. Various characterizations demonstrated that the S600 (siderite calcinated at 600 °C for 1 h) had a high specific surface area (57.18 m 2 /g) and high electron transfer ability. Under 1 g/L S600 and 1 mM PDS, 99.9% and 50% of SMT (5 mg/L) and TOC were eliminated in 2 h, with a kinetic constant of 0.026 min −1 . Increasing the S600 dosage and PDS concentration favored SMT degradation, while inorganic anions and natural organic matter had the opposite effect. Besides this, Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis and scavenger experiment results demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (about 62.3%) and sulfate radicals (about 20.2%) played a major role, while Fe(IV) (about 16.5%) played a minor role in SMT degradation. Moreover, various intermediates for SMT degradation were put forward based on the LC–MS/MS results and their toxicity was predicted to decrease. This work provides a vision for water treatment based on natural mineral materials and presents a new idea for the comprehensive utilization of siderite. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abiotic Fe (II) oxidation widely occurs in the natural subsurface environment and engineered dynamic processes, which possibly impacts the growth of indigenous microbes. As previously discovered, the oxidation of aqueous Fe 2+ at neutral pH effectively inactivates iron-reducing bacteria Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 (MR-1). Herein, the impacts of co-existing iron mineral on the oxidation of aqueous Fe 2+ and the subsequent disinfection activity on MR-1 were investigated with siderite selected as a representative iron mineral in the subsurface environment. The oxidation rate of aqueous Fe 2+ and the amount of generated OH radical increased as the content of siderite increased, while the MR-1 inactivation was alleviated. An initial concentration of 2.0 × 10 6 CFU/mL MR-1 was inactivated by about 2.7 orders of magnitude during oxidation of 0.2 mM FeSO 4 alone for 30 min, which was reduced to only about 0.6 orders of magnitude in the presence of 4.3 mM co-existing siderite. ROS scavenging results confirmed that the OH radical generated in the bulk solution was not the leading role for the inactivation of MR-1. Morphological changes of the cells observed by SEM demonstrated that the disruption of the cell membrane was alleviated by siderite, which was further supported by the XRD and FTIR spectra. The underlying mechanism was proposed to be the reduced contact time of Fe 2+ and MR-1 cells due to the accelerated oxidation. This work provides new insights into the disinfection behavior of heterogeneous Fe (II) oxidation on iron cycling bacterial in the natural environment.

Sulfate radicals-based advanced oxidation process (SO 4 − -AOPs) exhibits remarkable efficacy for emerging contaminants (ECs) eradication. In this work, we utilized natural Fe II -siderite as a catalyst with dithionite (DTN) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) precursors to engineer the Fe II -siderite&DTN/PMS system. Carbamazepine (CBZ) elimination efficiency exceeded 90% in 10 min with reactive species of SO 4 − and OH, even in the anaerobic condition due to the sufficient oxidation species source from broken peroxy bond. The system generated various radicals (e.g., SO 4 − , SO 3 − , OH, and SO 5 − ) through redox cycles involving Fe II -siderite, DTN, and PMS, with Fe II /Fe III interconversion driven by PMS oxidation and DTN reduction. Enhanced electron shuttling and Fe II /Fe III interconversion at the phase interface, the rate-limiting step in iron-based AOPs, facilitated PMS activation. CBZ degradation followed four pathways including deacylation, ring-opening oxidation, hydroxylation, decarboxylation, and deketonization, with reactive sites at CBZ-7C and CBZ-8C identified by LC-MS/MS and density functional theory (DFT). Oxygen consumption rate (OCR) toxicity assessments revealed persistent toxicity of intermediates, yet the Fe II -siderite&DTN/PMS system detoxified them effectively based on T.E.S.T. evaluation. And the system demonstrates potential for ECs remediation, particularly in high salinity waters, due to the significant enhancement of higher Cl − concentrations.

Natural siderite (FeCO 3 ), simulated synthetic siderite and nZVI/FeCO 3 composite were used as green and easily available iron-based catalysts in peroxydisulfate activation for remediating 2-chlorophenol as the target contaminant and this technique can effectively degrade organic pollutants in the soil. The key reaction parameters such as catalysts dosage, oxidant concentration and pH, were investigated to evaluate the catalytic performance of different materials in catalytic systems. The buffering property of natural soil conduced satisfactory degradation performance in a wide pH range (3-10). Both the main non-radical of 1 O 2 and free radicals of SO 4 · − and O H · were evidenced by quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance. The reduction of nZVI on FFC surface not only has the advantage for electronic transfer to promote the circulation of Fe(III) to Fe(II), but also can directly dechlorinate. Furthermore, the intermediates were comprehensively analyzed by GC-MS and a potential removal mechanism of three oxidant system for 2-CP soil degradation was obtained. Briefly, this research provides a new perspective for organic contaminate soil treatment using natural siderite or simulated synthetic siderite as efficient and environmental catalytic material.

Occurring naturally siderite (FeCO 3 ) was used as the heterogeneous catalyst to activate peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of sulfadiazine under different initial pH values. The findings of this system exhibited various ROS (e.g. 1 O 2 , SO 4 − and OH) present during a wide range of pH values. Among them, 1 O 2 could significantly facilitate the initial degradation rate, and the increased pH enhanced the role of 1 O 2 . The factors including initial pH values, siderite dosage, PDS concentration, initial contaminants concentration, and water matrix were discussed. The role of each ROS was investigated through quenching test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Furthermore, the comprehensive degradation process was proposed based on the LC-MS results. And the cycle test demonstrates the reusability of siderite at a pH of 3. Accordingly, this study is of great significance for understanding the degradation of such sulfonamide pollutants in the siderite/PDS system.

Oxygenation of siderite produces hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that are capable of transforming the pollutants. Yet, the influence of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs)/ thiols (LMWOTs) which are widely occurring in soils and waters on •OH production from the oxygenation process of siderite is poorly understood. Results of this study show that the presence of LMWOAs/LMWOTs significantly facilitated •OH production from siderite oxidation by O 2 at pH 6–8. For instance, at pH 7, the cumulative •OH concentration within 24 h was only 1.3 μM for oxygenation of 1 g/L siderite, while it boosted to 19.7 and 7.2 μM, respectively, with the respective addition of 1 mM ethylenediaminotetraacetate and cysteine. The mechanisms responsible for the enhanced •OH production are associated with the complexation ability and redox activity of LMWOAs/LMWOTs. In the absence of LMWOAs/LMWOTs, •OH is mainly produced from the oxidation of adsorbed Fe(II) by O 2 , followed by the oxidation of structural Fe(II) on siderite surface. In the presence of LMWOAs, LMWOAs react with adsorbed Fe(II) and structural Fe(II) to produce complexed Fe(II). Therefore, the oxidation of LMWOAs complexed Fe(II) by O 2 predominantly contributed to •OH production. Although the complexation ability of LMWOTs is weaker than that of LMOWAs, LMWOTs can reduce O 2 to generate •O 2 − and H 2 O 2 , thus facilitating •OH production. Based on the proposed mechanisms, a kinetic model was developed to quantify the relative contribution of each pathway to •OH production. The addition of 1 mM citrate and cysteine in siderite suspension could increase the removal of trichloroethylene from <5% to 15% and 7%, respectively. Our study reveals the overlooked catalytic effects of LMWOAs/LMWOTs in enhancing •OH production from siderite oxidation by O 2 under redox-dynamic conditions.

To effectively separate siderite from hornblende, pentaethoxylated tallow amine (PTA) was introduced as a hornblende collector for the first time and its selective collection mechanism was revealed. The flotation results indicated that PTA strongly collected hornblende but not siderite, which enlarged the differences in flotation performance. The measurements of contact angle and adsorption amount suggested that hornblende adsorbed much more PTA than siderite, which greatly enhanced the surface hydrophobicity of hornblende. The analysis of zeta potential and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) proved that the strong adsorption of PTA on hornblende was attributed to hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. Extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (EDLVO) theoretical calculations confirmed that PTA enhanced attractive hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction interaction between hornblende and bubbles, and promoted the adhesion of hornblende to the bubble surface, resulting in a high recovery of hornblende. However, the repulsive interaction between siderite and bubbles prevented siderite from adhering to the bubbles, resulting in poor flotation performance. Consequently, effective separation of hornblende from siderite was achieved by PTA, in which 90.46% of siderite was effectively recovered and 94.26% of hornblende was effectively removed. Thus, PTA can be used as an effective collector to separate siderite from hornblende.

Although the synthesis of carbon nanotubes from coal can efficiently reduce the cost of preparing these materials, the effect of the primary minerals present in coal (e.g., Fe-containing siderite) on the growth of these structures has not been studied in depth. In this study, we used a bituminous coal containing siderite and investigated the changes of the original siderite phase and the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes during a KOH-catalyzed coal pyrolysis process . The results shown that the primary Fe minerals played an important role in the formation of carbon nanotubes during coal pyrolysis. During the KOH-catalyzed pyrolysis of coal, the Fe present in the raw material migrated from the bulk to the surface of the coal particles, and enriched in some areas of the surface of the coal particle. KOH-catalyzed coal pyrolysis had a significant effect on the formation of micropores and the increase of specific surface area and pore volume in coal. The primary siderite in coal and the catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes, in line with the following mechanism: FeCO 3 → α-Fe → Fe 3 C + Graphite → carbon nanotubes. This study can provide new ideas for the utilization of low-rank coal resources rich in Fe mineral components.

The huge application of synthetic dyes caused a severe impact in the environment. In the present study, a physico-chemical strategy of heterogeneous-Fenton catalyzed by the natural ferrous ore has been established for toxic chemical degradation , of which the complex and high-expense repetitive pH adjustment procedures were escaping. And this natural heterogeneous catalyst also could be recycled and sustainable for toxic substances treatment involved in synergetic adsorption and oxidation. The siderite , served as an adsorbent and catalyst for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). Siderite exhibited a better adsorption capacity with a saturated adsorption capacity of ∼11.08 mg/g. Batch adsorption experiments have verified that adsorption rate and adsorption equilibrium followed pseudo-second-order rate model and Langmuir isotherm equation, respectively. The combination with H 2 O 2 , showed significant enhancement of MB degradation without any pH adjustment. The effect of siderite dosage, H 2 O 2 dosage, MB concentration, initial pH, and reaction temperature on MB degradation was investigated, which also has indicated the excellent catalytic performance of siderite. About 99.71% of MB was degraded in 480 min with initial pH of 7.0, reaction temperature of 25 °C, siderite, and H 2 O 2 dosage of 2.5 g/L and 122.38 mM, respectively. It was found that siderite could be reused and remained high degradation efficiency on MB after 5 times reutilization, which also could demonstrate the sustainable and effective process to degrade organic pollution. The generation of reactive species including ·OH and O2·- have been confirmed based on scavenger test and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, which was dominated by heterogeneous reaction. The possible degradation mechanisms of MB have been predicted based on spectrum scanning and GC-MS analysis. Moreover, acute toxicity assessment with marine photobacterium Vibrio fisheri was conducted to investigate the toxicity change in the adsorption/oxidation coupled process. This sustainable heterogeneous-Fenton technology has been verified as a promising and applicable process for toxic organic chemicals removal due to effective mineralization and detoxification assisted with the natural ore mineral through the simple operation and mild condtions.

Fungi play vital roles in the fate of organic pollutants, particularly when interacting with minerals in aquatic and soil environments. Mechanisms by which fungi may mitigate pollutions in fungus-mineral interactions are still unclear. Inspired by biogeochemical cycling, we constructed a range of co-culture systems to investigate synergistic effects of the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium and the iron-bearing mineral siderite on thiamethoxam (THX) transformation, a common neonicotinoid pesticide. Co-culturing with siderite significantly enhanced THX transformation during the initial 10 days with a dose effect, achieving 86 % removal within 25 days. Fungi could affect siderite’s dissolution, transformation, and precipitation through their biological activities. These interactions triggered physiological adaptation and resilience in fungi. Siderite could enhance the activity of fungal ligninolytic enzymes and cytochrome P450, facilitating biotransformation. Genes expression related to growth, energy metabolism, and oxidative stress response upregulated, enhancing fungal resilience to THX. The primary THX degradation pathways included nitro-reduction, C-N cleavage, and de-chlorination. Molecular dynamics simulations provided insights into catalytic mechanisms of enzyme-THX interactions. Together, siderite could act as natural enhancers that endowed fungi to resist physical and chemical stresses in environments, providing insights into contaminants attenuation, fungal biomineralization, and the coevolution of the Earth's lithosphere and biosphere.
