In order to improve the infiltration and adhesion of epoxy resin to CFs and enhance the interfacial properties of CFs/EP composites, the water-soluble epoxy resin prepared by in-situ blending phosphorylation modification was compounded into a high-temperature-resistant carbon fiber sizing agent, and the CFs/EP composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted resin transfer forming method. The results showed that the prepared sizing agent contained epoxy resin, aliphatic ester, polyoxyethylene and other active oxygen-containing groups. It had good water solubility, small particle size, good stability, and could be dissolvable with water at room temperature in any proportion. The average particle size of 1% sizing agent emulsion was 17.7 nm, and it was stable at 4000 rpm for 30 min. The initial decomposition temperature of the sizing agent is 313 ℃, the mass residue rate is 65.60% at 400 ℃, and the mass residue is 20% at 600 ℃, which has excellent high-temperature resistance. The sizing agent can also significantly improve the surface energy of CFs, and increase its surface interface bonding and mechanical properties. When the content of sizing agent on the surface of CFs is 7.88 mg/g, the surface energy is 47.38 mN/m, and the breaking strength is 777.91 MPa, which is 24.42 and 29.29% higher than that of desizing CFs. The bend strength and shearing strength of the prepared CFs/EP composites are 107.38 MPa and 9.83 MPa, which are increased by 81.91 and 20.17% compared with the desizing products. Graphical Abstract

The poor interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CFs) and vinyl ester resin (VE) has seriously hampered the application of CFs/VE composites. In this work, the interfacial adhesion was efficiently enhanced by grafting acrylamide with epoxy sizing agent on CFs surface. The grafting reaction was feasible according to the thermodynamic calculation. The optimal grafting condition was 80 °C for 10 min based on the kinetic investigation by differential scanning calorimeter. Surface morphology and surface composition of modified carbon fibers (MCFs) were characterized, which indicated that acrylamide was grafted successfully on CFs surface and the surface roughness was increased slightly. After grafting, the interface shear strength of MCFs/VE composites was significantly improved by 86.96% and the interlaminar shear strength was enhanced by 55.61% due to the covalent bonds in interphase and the toughening effect of sizing gent. Moreover, the static and dynamic mechanical properties of composites with different interfacial adhesion were measured, which further confirmed the effect of the grafting modification.

A water-soluble epoxy resin was synthesized by the reaction between novolac epoxy resin (F-51) and diethanolamine. Then, the modified F-51 was mixed with poly(alkylene glycol allyl glycidyl ether) as a film former of a sizing agent. A series of water-soluble sizing agents for carbon fiber (CF) were prepared. The modified F-51 was analyzed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface morphology of the CF was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of the sizing agent on the handling characteristics were investigated by abrasion resistance, fluffs, and breakage and stiffness tests. The results show that the abrasion resistance of the sized CF increased by 114.5% and reached 2344 times and the mass of fabric hairiness decreased to 3.2 mg. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test indicated that the interfacial adhesion of the composite could be greatly improved. The ILSS of the sized CF composite could reach a maximum value of 42.40 MPa. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131 , 39843.

Improving the interfacial adhesion is indispensable for carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyamide (PA) composites. An external emulsion sizing agent based on epoxy resin and an anionic self-emulsifying sizing agent by introducing p -aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into epoxy resin and neutralizing with triethanolamine were prepared, respectively. It was found that the self-emulsifying agent showed the benefit on reducing the hairiness of CF, which was pronouncedly decreased from 47.4 to 7.7 mg. The tensile strength of corresponding PA composite was improved from 148.3 to 186.3 MPa, while the notched impact strength was increased from 7.7 to 13.7 KN/m 2 , compared with that of unsized CF reinforced composite. The self-emulsifying sizing agent exhibited higher interfacial adhesion between CF and PA matrix than the external emulsion, due to the hydrogen bond between the NH group in PABA and CO group in PA. The combination of physical adsorption and chemical bond of the self-emulsifying sizing agent resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties. POLYM. This study focuses on synthesizing a range of hydrolysis-modified poly(phthalazione ether nitrile) polymers with different quantities of carboxyl groups (HPPEN-COOH). These polymers are intended to enhance the bonding strength between carbon fibers (CFs) and poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK). The chemical structure of HPPEN-COOH was elucidated using FTIR spectroscopy, and the presence of HPPEN-COOH as a coating on the CFs surface was confirmed by XPS analysis. Compared with the UCF/PPESK composite, the interlaminar shear strength of the CF-5/PPESK composite increased by 39 %. In the DMA test, the service temperature and storage modulus of the CF-5/PPESK composite were increased to 268 °C and 112 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, the composite showed satisfactory performance in hydrothermal aging studies. This method is simple and easy to implement, has the potential for large-scale industrial production, and is an environmentally friendly method to improve the interface properties of the CF/PPESK composite.

This experimental study focuses on the development of an amphiphilic sizing agent to improve the interfacial adhesion and the mechanical properties of short glass fiber (GF)/polypropylene (PP) composites. To solve the critical compatible issue between the hydrophilic GF and the hydrophobic PP, we strategically utilized the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization to self-assemble and synthesize an amphiphilic sizing agent. This surfactant-free sizing agent can create hydrogen bonds and electrostatic adsorption on GF surfaces and meanwhile can form molecular entanglements , alkyl cations, and σ-π conjugates with PP matrix. The FT-IR analysis shows that a large number of hydrogen bonds are formed on the sizing agent-GF interface. Additionally, the SEM micrographs of the composite fracture surfaces demonstrate strong interfacial compatibility between the sized-GF and the PP matrix. Comparing with the neat GF/PP composites, the tensile and flexural strength of the sized-GF/PP composites are increased by 25.8% and 33.1%, respectively. Their tensile strength and young's modulus are in close agreement to the analytical calculations. In short, this paper presents a new RAFT-based methodology to develop the amphiphilic sizing agents that are able to improve the interfacial compatibility of GF/PP composites and also can be transferred towards real applications for enhancing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites.
