The precise control of phosphors with well-defined features remains a challenging issue since its property has been closely related to the shape, surface modification and particle size. The studies to develop microstructure under mild conditions will be of general interests. Herein, 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) has been incorporated as a viable technique to bind with surface of BaMgF 4 :Eu 3+ phosphor and such process has been proved to be an effective strategy in preparing inorganic materials. The well acceptable advantages of this way include facile synthesis steps, broaden excitation range and reduced particle size. Although lanthanide fluorides have been reported so far, there are limited studies concerning organic framework appended red phosphors. In this way, the exploitation of a simple method to assemble hybrid phosphors will be very valuable in opto-electronic industries.
LaOF:Eu 3+ nanoparticles were successfully prepared by annealing LaF 3 :Eu 3+ nanocrytsals which were capped with SiO 2 shell. The SiO 2 shell effectively prohibited the growth of LaF 3 :Eu 3+ nanocrystals during the annealing process, and it was etched off after annealing to obtain the LaOF:Eu 3+ nanoparticles. The LaOF:Eu 3+ nanoparticles had a size comparable to the original LaF 3 :Eu 3+ nanoparticles. Inorganic–organic hybrid nanoparticles of LaF 3 :Eu 3+ and LaOF:Eu 3+ nanoparticles with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) ligands were prepared. Strong luminescence as a result of the energy transfer from the TTA organic ligands to the LaF 3 :Eu 3+ and LaOF:Eu 3+ nanoparticles was observed. The LaOF:Eu 3+ -based hybrid nanoparticles exhibited stronger luminescence intensity and broader excitation spectral range than the LaF 3 :Eu 3+ -based hybrid nanoparticles. Effect of the content of TTA ligands on the luminescence of the LaOF:Eu 3+ nanoparticles was investigated in detail.

Herein, a novel fluorescent indicator for the real-time monitoring of amines is described. This probe contains a complex of europium-(thenoyltrifluoroacetone) 3 (Eu(TTA) 3 ) that efficiently reacts with primary and secondary amines. The electron-withdrawing trifluoroacetyl undergoes a nucleophilic addition with amines, and the complex was used to selectively detect BuNH 2 and Et 2 NH (quenching concentration for BuNH 2 : 10 −4 m , for Et 2 NH: 1.2 × 10 −3 m ) by monitoring emission; no changes were observed in the emission spectrum of Eu(TTA) 3 in the presence of Et 3 N, [Bu 4 N]Cl, or PhNH 2 in aqueous solution (THF/H 2 O = 1:1). The ratio of emission intensity to amine concentration was linear by the least-squares fitting method.
