Mechanical and Wear Properties of Sisal Fiber Cellulose Microcrystal Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Composites

Jian Lv,Deming Zeng,Chun Wei

In this paper, sisal fiber cellulose microcrystal (SFCM) was prepared by the sulfate pulping method, and sisal fiber cellulose microcrystal/unsaturated polyester (SFCM/UP) in situ resin was polymerized. Furthermore, the SFCM/UP composite was prepared by rolling and molding techniques. Effects of SFCM content on mechanical and wear properties of the UP composites were studied. Structure and properties of the in situ SFCM/UP resin and its composites were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared, polarized optical microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and other methods. The results showed that the addition of SFCM by in situ polymerization significantly improves the thermal stability of UP: The decomposition temperature ( T d5 ) of SFCM/UP in situ resin, at thermal weight loss of 5%, is increased by 16°C compared to that of the pure UP resin. On a condition that the SFCM content was 2%, the impact strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of SFCM/UP composites are higher than those of UP composites by 41.08%, 52.52%, and 32.31%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of SFCM significantly enhances the wear properties of unsaturated polyester composite at 200°C; the volume wear rate of SFCM/UP composite is lower than that of UP composites by 64%, indicating SFCM could significantly strengthen and toughen UP composites.

Toughening of bamboo fibers/unsaturated polyester composites with 2-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate

Ming-En Fei,Tianshun Xie,Wendi Liu,Renhui Qiu

Bamboo fibers (BFs)-reinforced unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were prepared by hand lay-up compression molding. The UPE resins were modified with 2-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) and designed to improve the flexibility and toughness of the BFs–UPE composites. The results indicated that the toughness of the composites significantly increased as the AAEM usage increased. When compared with the untreated UPE composites, the composites obtained from AAEM modified UPE resins (with a 20:80 weight ratio of AAEM to UPE) had 21.7% higher impact strength. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that incorporation of AAEM significantly increased the damping parameter and decreased glass transition temperature of the composites due to the introduction of flexible segments of AAEM into the UPE resins. Scanning electron microscopy images of the impact-fractured surfaces of the composites revealed that AAEM modification improved the interfacial adhesion between BFs and UPE matrices. The main mechanism for the increase in the toughness of the composites could be due to the increased ductility of the matrices. POLYM. Interfacial flame retardant unsaturated polyester composites with simultaneously improved fire safety and mechanical properties

Shenghe Zhang,Fukai Chu,Zhoumei Xu,Yifan Zhou,Weizhao Hu,Yuan Hu

The low flame retardant efficiency and poor interfacial property are the main problems that confine the wide application of glass-fiber reinforced unsaturated resin (GUPR) composites. Herein, these problems are effectively solved by grafting modified silane coupling agent on the surface of glass fiber and adding multi-element hybrid flame retardant to matrix. Firstly, phosphorus-containing flame retardant interface modifier (PKH550) and Sulfur-containing flame retardant (PCH 3 -S) were synthesized, and the structures were confirmed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) of 1 H and 31 P. Then PKH550 was successfully grafted on the surface of glass-fiber. Notably, compared with PGF/UPR 20% which had no rating in UL-94 test, the use of PKH550 modified glass-fiber made MGF/UPR 20% reached the V0 rating, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value was as high as 38%. In addition, with the increase addition of PCH 3 -S, the flame retardant properties of GUPR composites were gradually improved. Finally, the mechanical properties of GUPR composites had been improved further by the plasma method. Compared with the 296.93 MPa tensile strength of PGF/UPR, the tensile strength of P-PGF/UPR prepared after plasma treatment of glass-fiber increased to 319.27 MPa. This work provides a new angle to simultaneously improve the fire safety performance and mechanical properties of materials, which will not only be limited to the application of unsaturated resins, but can also have a rather good application prospects in other flame-retardant materials.

Flame retardancy of unsaturated polyester composites with modified ammonium polyphosphate, montmorillonite, and zinc borate

Mengwei Jiang,Yunshu Zhang,Yuan Yu,Qingwu Zhang,Bujun Huang,Zhiquan Chen,Tingting Chen,Juncheng Jiang

Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was modified using a new method, where the resulting modified APP (MAPP) was obtained by mixing APP with unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). MAPP was more effective in improving the flame retardancy of UPR than APP which was due to the improved dispersion of MAPP in UPR composite. Then, the UPR composites were prepared based on dimethyl methylphosphonate, MAPP, montmorillonite, and zinc borate. Finally, the flame-retardant and mechanical properties of the UPR composites were analyzed using the limited oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis, UL-94 vertical burning test, scanning electron microscopy, cone calorimetry, mechanical tests, and viscosity measurements. The LOI and UL-94 tests showed that the flame-retardant properties clearly improved with the addition of fillers in the UPR composites compared to pristine UPR. The synergistic effect of Si- and P-containing flame retardants in this composite resulted in the LOI value increasing from 18.9 to 31.3% and achieved the UL-94 V-0 rating. Moreover, the heat release rate was lower than the pristine UPR. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 47180.

Sequential Isocyanate/Acrylate Functionalization of Cellulose Nanocrystals for Multi-Performance Advancement in Unsaturated Polyester Composites

Ran Li,Lifei Feng,Wenbin Yang,Huiping Lin,Yiqiang Wu

This study develops a functionalization strategy for incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) to simultaneously enhance its strength and toughness. Surface modification of CNCs was achieved through sequential reactions with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), introducing carbon double bonds(CC) to obtain modified CNC (m-CNC). The m-CNC was subsequently compounded with UPR to fabricate composite materials. A comprehensive investigation of the composites' morphological features, mechanical performance, and thermal behavior was conducted through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), mechanical testing, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Experimental results demonstrate that 0.3 wt% m-CNC incorporation markedly improves UPR's mechanical properties, with the composite exhibiting 23.55% higher tensile strength, 59.01% increased flexural strength, and 96.16% enhanced impact resistance compared to unmodified UPR. DMA characterization revealed that covalent cross-linking between m-CNC and the UPR matrix restricts polymer chain mobility, resulting in a 35.4% elevation in storage modulus. TGA data confirmed the heat resistance improvement, showing 12.8°C and 9.3°C increases in thermal decomposition temperatures for m-CNC/UPR composites relative to pure UPR and unmodified CNCs/UPR systems, respectively. This synergistic modification approach effectively balances structural integrity preservation of CNCs with significant enhancement of UPR's multifunctional performance, demonstrating potential applications in automotive, construction, new energy, and eco-friendly packaging industries. It emerges as a promising alternative to conventional composite materials.

Recycling of carbon fibers from unsaturated polyester composites via a hydrolysis-oxidation synergistic catalytic strategy

Baolong Wang,Xinyu Wang,Ningdi Xu,Yibo Shen,Fei Lu,Yingying Liu,Yudong Huang,Zhen Hu

Unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) composites have many industrial applications, such as fan blades in wind energy. However, the stable cross-linked polymer networks of resin matrix lead to large numbers of composite wastes that are difficult to recycle. Developing an efficient approach to explore the recovery of high-value fiber from composites is thus imperative. In this paper, an efficient and mild hydrolysis-oxidation synergistic catalytic strategy was proposed to efficiently recycle carbon fibers from UPRs composites by selectively cleaving chemical bonds of UPRs. Ester bonds in UPRs were cleaved by using hydrolysis of 80% hydrazine hydrate along with NaOH. Afterwards, the cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds was accomplished via the Fenton reaction for the purpose of complete degrading UPRs. The result figured that UPRs could be efficiently degraded at 100 °C below via this hydrolysis-oxidation strategy. Interestingly, applying the strategy, the recovery of carbon fibers from UPRs composites was investigated. The reclaimed carbon fibers kept their original surface microscopic morphology , chemical structure and tensile strength almost close to the virgin carbon fibers. This strategy opens up a new way for efficient and mild degradation of thermosets .

Enhanced mechanical properties and water resistance of bamboo fiber–unsaturated polyester composites coupled by isocyanatoethyl methacrylate

Liu Wendi,Chen Tingting,Wen Xiaoyun,Qiu Renhui,Zhang Xincong

Bamboo fibers were mechanically extracted from raw green bamboos by crushing, rolling, and combing techniques with 1,4-butanediol as a solvent. The morphology of the bamboo fibers thus obtained was analyzed. The bamboo fibers were treated with isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (IEM) in the presence of dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst, to improve the interfacial adhesion between the fibers and unsaturated polyester (UPE) resins. The bamboo fibers reinforced UPE composites were prepared by hand lay-up compression molding. FTIR, XPS, and NMR analyses indicated that the IEM was covalently bonded onto the bamboo fibers via carbamate linkages. The IEM treatments significantly increased the tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and water resistance of the resulting composites and yet decreased the impact strength of the composites. The SEM images of the tensile-fractured surfaces of the IEM-treated bamboo fibers–UPE composites revealed that the fiber treatments markedly improved the interfacial adhesion between the bamboo fibers and UPE resins.

Phytic acid and CaCl2 co-treated rice straw fibers/unsaturated polyester composites with excellent flame retardant, water resistant and dimensional stability properties

Zhao Feiyang,Liu Huijuan,Jin Yilin,Ru Hongfu,Wang Longfei,Xiang Shuangfei,Li Hao,Zhao Shujun,Fu Feiya,Camilleri Ing. Duncan,Liu Xiangdong

The application range of rice straw (RS) is limited by its poor flame and water resistance. It’s still a great challenge to endow RS fibers with excellent flame and water resistance properties without compromising the intrinsic mechanical properties. Here, a simple surface treatment strategy of RS fibers via co-treatment with phytic acid (PA) and calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) was developed. First, PA was grafted onto RS fibers by esterification reaction. Then RS fibers were ionically crosslinked by CaCl 2 treatment. Modified RS fibers (PCRS) were then mixed with unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) to produce PCRS/UPR composites (PCRU). Benefiting from Ca 2+ complexes via the ionic crosslinking between Ca 2+ and –P (=O)–OH of the PA, –OH of the RS fibers, PCRU demonstrates enhanced tensile strength (12.04 MPa), good waterproofing capability, and flame-retardant performance. PCRU exhibites low water absorption rate (5.90%) and dimensional stability (thickness deformation less than 1.76%) after 168 h of water immersion. In addition, the limiting oxygen index and the total heat release of the prepared PCRU composites are 29.7 and 11.3 kJ/g, which reach the standard for flame retardant materials. Therefore, this study provides a simple and green pretreatment strategy of rice straw fiber for the applications in flame retardant, low water absorption, and dimensionally stable composites. Oxygen plasma treatment of bamboo fibers (BF) and its effects on the static and dynamic mechanical properties of BF-unsaturated polyester composites

Wendi Liu,Tingting Chen,Tianshun Xie,Fuwen Lai,Renhui Qiu

A novel method for the preparation of bamboo fibers (BF) has been investigated that includes crushing, rolling, and other combing techniques with 1,4-butanediol as a dispersant. The fibers were treated by oxygen plasma to improve their interfacial adhesion to unsaturated polyester (UPE) resins. Composites were prepared from the plasma treated fibers (BF tr ) and UPE by hand lay-up compression molding. BF tr significantly increased the tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the resulting BF-UPE composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicated that the plasma treatment essentially increased the storage modulus and glass transition temperature of the composites. The damping parameter of the composites showed a decreasing trend in the glassy region, while the opposite was true for the rubbery region. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the treatment did not change the crystal structures within the fibers but increased slightly their crystallinity indices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the surface of BF tr had a higher oxygen concentration and oxygen/carbon ratio than that of BF. The scanning electron microscopy graphs of the tensile-fractured surface of the composites demonstrated an improved interfacial adhesion between BF tr and UPE resins.
