Based on the micro-structure of wollastonite (WS) and bamboo flour (BF), a series of PP/WS/BF ternary composite materials are prepared using blending, twin-screw melt extrusion, and injection molding processes. The experiment shows that the formulation and processing technology play a significant impact on the structure, thermal, and mechanical properties of the composites. BF has a significant impact on the nucleation and crystallization of PP, while WS has almost no effect on PP. BF improves tensile strength and enhances the strength of composites; WS improves the bending strength and flexural modulus and enhances the rigidity of composites. Taking the W-B-30-1:3 sample as an example, its tensile performance is the highest at 23.33 MPa, as well as bending strength and flexural modulus of 26.23 and 904.67 MPa, respectively. The combination of BF and WS leads to an increase in storage modulus, a decrease in loss modulus, a decrease in loss factor, an increase in glass transition temperature, and a decrease in bonding factor of ternary composite materials. This work can enrich the scope of PP composite materials, and the composite materials are expected to have potential applications in the fields of automotive interior parts with lightweight. Highlights Heterogeneous bonding among fillers enhances crystallization of composites. Wollastonite is more conducive to improving the thermal stability of composites. Adding fillers can more effectively enhance mechanical properties. The use of fillers increases interfacial compatibility and bonding performance.

The magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) have been synthesized using piperonal molecules as dummy template and magnetic wollastonite composites as support. The resulting composites were applied to selective recognition of sesamol from aqueous solution. MMIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). MMIPs were demonstrated with an imprinted polymer film (90–100 nm) and exhibited magnetic property ( M s =8.60 emu/g) and thermal stability. The effective average diameter of the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was about 10 nm and the thickness of magnetic film was about 160 nm. Batch mode adsorption studies were carried out to investigate the specific adsorption equilibrium, kinetics and selective recognition. The Langmuir isotherm model was fitted to the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich model, and the kinetic properties were well described by the pseudo-second-order equation. The value of E a in this study was 5.35 kJ/mol for MMIPs. In addition, the selective recognition experiments demonstrated that MMIPs have specific recognition ability toward sesamol.

As an alternative to the ordinary Portland cement (OPC), it is imperative to improve the performance of geopolymer under harsh conditions (such as sulfate/seawater attack). Sulfate attack is one of the reasons which cause deterioration and damages of geopolymer structures. Thus, the strategy of sulfate resistance attracts attention of researchers. As a reinforcement for geopolymer, the cellulose nanofiber (from waste bamboo powder) facilitates the utilization of waste bamboo powder. High-purity cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was obtained by using alkali, bleaching and acid hydrolysis treatments on waste bamboo powder. The purification effect and environmental impact of CNF were compared by different bleaching methods. The optimal conditions (containing 5 wt% H 2 O 2 , 0.04 wt% MgSO 4 and 0.05 wt% TAED) for CNF purification were determined. This work aims to investigate the effect of CNF and wollastonite (WS) on the sulfate resistance of metakaolin (MK) geopolymer. The deterioration mechanism of geopolymer reinforced by natural fiber (CNF and WS) exposed to sulfate environment was revealed by employing XRD , SEM and MIP . The influence of extreme sulfate environment on mechanical properties and microstructure was investigated. The analysis results of microstructure, mass loss rate and mechanical properties were also combined to evaluate the sulfate resistance. The outcomes show that the bleaching method of H 2 O 2 can effectively remove impurities and enhance the purification effect of CNF. The optimum mix proportion of MK geopolymer reinforced by natural fiber (formulated as 2% of CNF, 10% of WS and 88% of MK) is obtained. The compressive and flexural strengths are increased by up to 76.1% and 135.5% (compared to the control group), respectively. The deterioration of geopolymer is related to the concentration of Na 2 SO 4 and the immersion time. The degradation mechanism is attributed to the incomplete geopolymerization and the destruction of the pore structure due to sulfate attack exposure. The deterioration processes of geopolymer can be slowed down by introducing WS and CNF. It improves the sulfate resistance of the matrix from the structural aspect.

Osteochondral defect refers to the damage of cartilage as well as subchondral bone. Cartilage tissue engineering focusing on the regeneration of cartilage and disregarding the subchondral bone always leads to partial regeneration of the damage, resulting in poor mechanical and physiological properties. A scaffold suitable for in situ inductive regeneration of both types of tissues is urgently needed. In this study, a biphasic scaffold integrated by macro-porous fibrin and 3D-printed wollastonite (containing 8% MgSiO3 (CS-Mg8)) scaffolds, either preloaded with rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) or not, were fabricated and used to repair osteochondral defects in vivo (full thickness osteochondral defects in rabbits, 4 mm in diameter and 4 mm in depth with bone marrow blood effusion). The fibrin scaffold had a pore size of 100–200 μm, and was degraded gradually and reached weight loss over 80% at 28 days. The presence of BMSCs could accelerate the degradation rate. BMSCs could well proliferate in the fibrin scaffold along with time prolongation. The CS-Mg8 scaffold possessed a regular structure of cross stacked CS-Mg8 rods, and was degraded rather slowly with a mass loss of 8.5% at 28 days. BMSCs adhered and showed well spreading on the CS-Mg8 scaffold, without apparent proliferation in vitro. In vivo transplantation of the biphasic scaffolds, either preloaded with BMSCs or not, could induce the regeneration of both cartilage and subchondral bone to a great extent. Loading of BMSCs enabled better regeneration of cartilage layer, leading to smoother macroscopic appearance, good integrity with surrounding tissue and tide mark formation. However, no significant difference in bone formation and in gene expression was found with and without BMSCs loading.

CaO is efficient in catalyzing transesterification for biodiesel production , but its industrial application is inherently restricted by active sites leaching. To address this drawback, CaO is decorated into wollastonite to prepare the stable Ca/wollastonite catalyst. Microwave-assisted transesterification is used to produce biodiesel from palm oil, which effectively accelerates the reaction rate and improves the conversion efficiency. The Ca/wollastonite-0.8 catalyst with the mass ratio of CaO to wollastonite of 0.8 performs well with the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield of 97.59%. Also, this catalyst is highly stable, where the FAME yield of 87.30% could be obtained for the fifth reused cycle. CaO is evenly dispersed on the wollastonite surface and the total basicity is high to 0.281 mmol g −1 . Meanwhile, transesterification parameters are optimized by response surface methodology with central composite design (RSM-CCD) and the maximum FAME yield of 98.46% is achieved at reaction temperature of 64.2 °C, molar ratio of methanol to palm oil of 15.54 and mass ratio of catalyst to palm oil of 9.21 wt % for 3 h. Besides, the mass ratio of catalyst to palm oil is the primary variable. Wollastonite is demonstrated to be feasible to enhance the stability of CaO in catalyzing transesterification.

Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC) substrates used for microwave circuits typically must have low dielectric loss and low permittivity, as well as the ability to co-fire with metals. The dielectric properties of the microcrystalline glass materials used as the LTCC substrates are closely related to the crystallization process during sintering. This study focuses on the crystallization process of CaO-B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 microcrystalline glass. Wollastonite and pseudowollastonite seeds were used to control the degree of crystal precipitation. The phase composition and microstructure of each sample were analyzed in detail to elucidate the changes in the dielectric properties and sintering performance of the material. The addition of crystal seeds as nucleation sites promoted crystallization and led to the formation of quartz crystals. The sintered samples exhibited excellent dielectric properties: ε r < 4 at 18 GHz, tan δ < 0.0015, and Q × f > 12000 GHz. They have great potential as high-performance LTCC substrates.

ATP is the core substance of energy metabolism in all forms of life. The chirality of d ‐ribose is essential for ATP's function, ensuring efficient molecular recognition, metabolic stability, and co‐evolution with RNA in biological processes. However, origin of chirality of d ‐ribose is still unknown. Here, we demonstrate that wollastonite, an abundant Earth mineral, catalyzes the formose reaction between formaldehyde and glycolaldehyde and achieves high enantioselectivity (63.3%–91.3% ee ) toward d ‐ribose. The lower energy barrier for the transition state of d ‐glyceraldehyde compared to that of l ‐glyceraldehyde, which possesses a similar configuration to glyceraldehyde, results in the enantioselective synthesis of ribose. Experimental and computational studies reveal that the surface chirality of wollastonite, which is characterized by its wavy atomic arrangement, selectively reduces the adsorption energy of the d ‐glyceraldehyde intermediate compared to its l ‐enantiomer. This preferential adsorption kinetically promotes the d ‐glyceraldehyde pathway and steers the reaction toward d ‐ribose. Our work establishes wollastonite as an intrinsically enantioselective mineral catalyst, provides a mechanistic foundation for prebiotic chiral selection toward d ‐ribose, and highlights surface design principles for asymmetric synthesis. Wollastonite's inherent surface chirality lowers the energy barrier for d ‐glyceraldehyde, kinetically favoring its pathway over l ‐forms. This preferential adsorption steers the formose reaction toward d ‐ribose, offering a prebiotic mechanism for chiral selection.

A sustainable pathway to green hydrogen generation, the design and synthesis of targeted photocatalysts based on semiconductors or other organic/inorganic materials has emerged as a promising approach for efficient hydrogen production under light irradiation. In this paper, wollastonite-ZnIn 2 S 4 composite photocatalysts (ZIS-W) were successfully prepared by the chemical deposition method with wollastonite as the carrier. The hydrogen evolution reaction from water under simulated sunlight irradiation and the enhancement mechanism of ZIS-W were investigated. The results showed that ZIS-W exhibits favorable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance and stability, and the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency of ZIS-W was 4.94 mmol h −1 g −1 , which was 1.44 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The unique crystal structure of wollastonite provides favorable conditions for the growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 and effectively enhances the dispersion and stability of ZnIn 2 S 4 . The recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs was effectively suppressed while the specific surface area was increased. This study provided a facile synthesis method for preparing photocatalysts with highly efficient hydrogen generation.

An inorganic anticorrosive coating, merging wollastonite into Chemically Bonded Phosphate Ceramic (CBPC) binders, was prepared to protect rebar from corrosion. In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance behavior of Wollastonite-based Chemically Bonded Phosphate Ceramic (WoCBPC) coatings, the electrochemical measurements were applied. The experiment results showed that the value of corrosion potential (E corr ) and polarization resistance (R p ) is the largest and the value of corrosion current density (I corr ) is the smallest among all WoCBPC coatings, when the content of wollastonite reaches 20% of the ceramic filler (WoCBPC20). Moreover, the resistance of WoCBPC20 coating (R c ) value was much higher than that of other WoCBPC coatings, which means the best anticorrosion properties. The structure formation of WoCBPC coatings was identified by using XRD as well as SEM/EDS techniques. The intensity of berlinite phase reaches the maximum with the introduction of wollastonite in WoCBPC20 coatings. Meanwhile, the fibrous wollastonite particles with high modulus can inhibit the spread of cracks in CBPC matrix. Therefore, the WoCBPC coatings show a barrier effect to prevent aggressive substances from contacting the rebar effectively.

The production of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) from carbonate-free minerals and CO 2 from industrial exhaust gas could lower energy consumption and promote CO 2 sequestration. The present study proposes a chemical looping process for the production of PCC from wollastonite (calcium silicate) and CO 2 from industrial exhaust using ammonium chloride as the looping medium; this study also included a pilot setup with a capacity of 3 kg of carbonate per hour to demonstrate the process. The process consisted of three phases: extraction of calcium from the wollastonite with hydrochloric acid; carbonation of the CO 2 in the extract solution in the presence of ammonia to produce calcium carbonate while generating ammonium chloride; and regeneration of hydrochloric acid and ammonia by the decomposition of ammonium chloride. A special air-lift reactor with an integrated settling vessel was designed for the carbonation reaction. The extraction and carbonation conditions were optimized, and fine calcium carbonate with a purity greater than 98% and a particle size of 2 μm was produced. The overall utilization of the calcium from wollastonite and the CO 2 reached 99 and 90%, respectively. This process avoids the high-temperature pyrolysis of limestone and thus consumes less energy. It also sequesters CO 2 from industrial exhaust and is a green and high-performing process for the production of PCC.

Polyethylene (PE) is widely used as a general-purpose plastic; however, its application in harsh environments is limited by poor resistance to thermal cycling crack resistance. In this study, a dual-modification strategy was developed to improve the thermal cycling crack resistance of PE by incorporating fibrous wollastonite (FW) and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). FW acts as a rigid reinforcing phase that restricts polymer-chain mobility and helps suppress crack initiation. EVA serves as a flexible toughening phase and promotes energy dissipation during deformation. The combination of FW and EVA delays crack propagation and improves the crack resistance of PE. The combined use of FW and EVA produces a synergistic effect involving physical crack blocking and energy dissipation, thereby delaying crack propagation. Consequently, the modified PE demonstrates substantially enhanced resistance to thermal cycling cracking. The PE coating samples maintained structural integrity after cyclic exposure between −40°C and 60°C for 100 h. In addition, the tensile strength increased to 14.94 MPa, representing a 39% improvement compared with pristine PE (10.73 MPa). The combined FW-EVA system effectively improves PE's thermal cycling crack resistance, offering a feasible strategy for its high-demand applications.

The development of reusable heterogeneous catalysts with acid-base bifunctions employing low-cost oil as a raw material is critical for optimizing the biodiesel synthesis process. In the present study, Sr–La/wollastonite bifunctional catalysts with the different Sr/La atomic ratios are synthesized using a straightforward impregnation technique. The results show that the Sr 7 La 3 /wollastonite catalyst establishes a biodiesel yield of 95.35% upon initial use and 85.14% after the fifth cycle of reuse, under the transesterification conditions of a catalyst content of 8 wt.%, methanol to oil molar ratio of 15, reaction duration of 3 h, and reaction temperature of 150 °C. The biodiesel yield of 91.62% is obtained even after the addition of 5 wt.% oleic acid, and the catalyst maintains a high biodiesel yield (>80%) for three reused cycles, which illustrates the good resistance to free fatty acids (FFAs). Meanwhile, the process parameters for transesterification are optimized utilizing Response Surface Methodology combined with Box-Behnken Design (RSM-BBD). With a methanol to oil molar ratio of 17.7 and a catalyst content of 6.4 wt.%, biodiesel yield is 96.08% at 149 °C for 3 h. This study revealed the enormous potential of the Sr–La/wollastonite bifunctional catalyst in biodiesel production.
