Selective flotation separation of bastnaesite from calcite using xanthan gum as a depressant

Zhoujie Wang,Houqin Wu,Jie Yang,Zhen Tang,Liping Luo,Kaiqian Shu,Yanbo Xu,Longhua Xu

The inability of rare earth and gangue minerals to be efficiently separated by flotation due to their similar physicochemical properties is a major challenge of the rare earth industry. Bastnaesite is one of the principal sources of light rare earth elements. The use of traditional flotation reagents often poses the problem of poisonous wastewater generation. Therefore, we use xanthan gum (XG) as a non-toxic, biodegradable, and cheap depressant to selectively separate bastnaesite from calcite by flotation and probe the corresponding mechanism. Microflotation experiments/zeta potential measurements conducted with/without XG using sodium oleate as a collector demonstrate that at pH 8, XG decreases the flotation recoveries of calcite and bastnaesite by 85.09 and 22.37%, respectively. Further analysis of adsorption behaviour on the mineral surface and possible reagent-mineral interactions shows that selective mineral separation is due to the preferential interaction of XG with Ca ions on the calcite surface and the suppression of oleate ion adsorption thereon due to the steric hindrance of polymeric XG. Hence with regard to the potential of XG in calcium-bearing mineral separation, XG could be as a new depressant for RE mineral flotation.

Thermally superinsulating nanofibrous xanthan gum aerogels

Wenxiao Liu,Yuxun Zhou,Di Liu,Jinbin Wang,Zhifang Sun

Polysaccharide-based aerogels combine high porosity, low density, excellent biocompatibility, and tunable functionality, making them attractive for a wide range of applications. In this study, xanthan gum (XG) was used to fabricate nanoporous aerogels with finely structured nanofibers via metal-ion crosslinking, followed by solvent exchange and supercritical CO 2 drying. The resulting XG aerogels exhibit a high specific surface area (391 m 2 ·g −1 ), ultra-high porosity (98.7%), and low density (0.059 g·cm −3 ), achieving an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 17.0 mW·m −1 ·K −1 . The robust crosslinked network also provides excellent mechanical performance, with a compressive modulus of 2.75 MPa. Hydrophobic treatment enables it to adapt to a wider range of environmental conditions. These features make XG aerogels promising high-performance thermal insulation materials for applications in energy conservation and environmental protection.

Xanthan gum-enhanced polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel toward flexible sensor

Yajun Wang,Yiyan Gao,Kai Shi,Guanghui Gao

Ionic conductive hydrogels attracted much attention for applying as wearable sensors, but most hydrogel sensors were not strong enough to withstand repeated sensing because of their low mechanical strength. Here, xanthan gum and sodium chloride were introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel system for constructing hydrogels with high mechanical strength due to the hydrogen bonds formed between polyvinyl alcohol and gum xanthan as well as the chain entanglement of polyvinyl alcohol. Meanwhile, the hydrogel was highly sensitive to mechanical deformation because of the existence of free ions provided by sodium chloride. As a result, the hydrogel could serve as sensors for perceiving various body motions, with the advantages of fast response, reproducibility and durability for repeated stretching or compression. The strategy of xanthan gum-enhanced hydrogel fuels an exciting new direction for hydrogel-based wearable sensors. Graphical

Effect of hypergravity on the modification of xanthan gum

Kai Zheng,Yilin Deng,Hui Cao

To improve the properties of xanthan gum (XG), 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride and propylene oxide were used as modifiers to etherify XG and to obtain cationic hydroxypropyl xanthan gum (HCXG), and cationic hydroxypropyl xanthan gum (CHCXG), further optimized by super-gravity reaction. The structure of the product was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The rheological properties of XG, HCXG, and CHCXG solutions and their performance as fracturing fluids were studied. Infrared and nuclear magnetic test results showed that the cationic etherification agent and hydroxypropyl group were successfully connected to XG, and the degree of substitution of CHCXG was higher. The rheological properties of the CHCXG solution and the performance of the fracturing fluid base fluid were superior to those of the XG and HCXG solutions. The viscosity of the solution after the super-gravity modification was further increased, and the apparent viscosity of the 0.4% CHCXG solution was 28.96% higher than that of the HCXG solution. After XG modification, the solution strength, yield stress, viscoelasticity, temperature resistance, and shear resistance were all significantly improved. The rheological properties of the HCXG solution and the performance of the fracturing fluid base fluid are good and can be used for fracturing fluid thickener.

The rheological and thickening properties of cationic xanthan gum

Lujiao Shi,Yi Wei,Nan Luo,Tianwei Tan,Hui Cao

In the present study, cationic xanthan gum (CXG) was synthesized to enhance the rheological property of xanthan gum (XG) by attaching quaternary amine groups to the backbone of XG. The efficacy of the substitution was confirmed by FT-IR spectra and 13C NMR. The surface morphology was changed considerably as demonstrated by SEM. The examined rheological properties of XG and CXG include steady-state and dynamic rheological properties. The results show that quaternary amine groups are successfully grafted onto the XG molecule. Apparent viscosity, storage modulus, and loss modulus of CXG solutions are greater than those of XG solutions under the same conditions. It is moreover found that apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity increase with the degree of substitution. The data indicate that the modified XG has much better heat resistance.

Xanthan gum-toughened hydrogel for durable strain and pressure sensors

Yajun Wang,Yiyan Gao,Guanghui Gao

Ionic conductive hydrogels have caught much attention for serving as wearable sensors, however, most hydrogel sensors are difficult to be used for repeated sensing due to low toughness and poor self-recovery. Here, tough and self-recovery hydrogels are constructed by introducing xanthan gum into poly(acrylamide-co-trimethyl ammonium chloride) (P(Am-DMC)) hydrogel network. Xanthan gum can bind with P(Am-DMC) chains via hydrogen bonds and the carboxyl group from xanthan gum generates electrostatic interaction with DMC, thus improving the mechanical toughness and fatigue resistance. Furthermore, the hydrogel is highly sensitive to mechanical deformation and presents durability for repeated stretching or compression, which can be designed as a wearable sensor for human motion detection. It is anticipated that the successful design of xanthan gum-toughened hydrogel can broaden the application range of hydrogels.

Ultrastable Emulsion Stabilized by the Konjac Glucomannan–Xanthan Gum Complex

Qian Han,Huili Wang,Tongxin Zhou,Yantao Wang,Zhenpeng Shen,Dehai Yu,Xiaona Liu,Wenxia Liu,Wenzhi Lv

Surfactant-free emulsions are currently gaining increased interest due to their technofunctional, health-promoting, economic, biocompatible, and sustainable characteristics. Herein, we report an ultrastable, surfactant-free emulsion stabilized by the konjac glucomannan (KGM)–xanthan gum (XG) complex. The results suggested that KGM–XG tended to adsorb onto the oil/water interface, causing a reduction in interfacial tension. The emulsion droplets were less than 1 μm in diameter and had a narrow size distribution. Using laser confocal microscopy and cryo-SEM, it was observed that KGM–XG generated a compact film on the surface of emulsion droplets while simultaneously constructing a three-dimensional network in the continuous phase. Both of these factors contributed to the stability of the emulsion. The present study presents a straightforward approach for producing highly stable emulsions stabilized by polysaccharides. These emulsions can be effectively utilized to enhance the water resistance of cellulose paper, which is extensively employed in the packaging industry.

Enhanced electro-responsive behaviors of agar/xanthan gum interpenetrating compound hydrogel

Ling-xiang Gao,Wen-qing Dai,Jian-li Chen,Zun-yuan Xie,Xuan-feng Yue

The agar/xanthan gum compound hydrogels were synthesized with/without a direct current (DC) electric field, and their behaviors and structure were investigated by dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and thermo gravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The results demonstrate that GA (the storage modulus of the agar/xanthan gum compound hydrogel gelled with an electric field) is greater than GB (that gelled without an electric field). The maximum of modulus increment (ΔG = GA-GB) and modulus increment sensitivity (ΔG/GB) appear when the xanthan gum weight fraction is at 0.8 wt%, which is the best electro-response of the compound hydrogels. The agar/xanthan gum compound hydrogel also exhibits a positive electro-response effect by increasing with the increasing field strength. All the response behaviors point to the conclusion that the DC electric field induces a more ordered and denser network structure of agar/xanthan gum compound hydrogel.

Multifunctional konjac glucomannan/xanthan gum self-healing coating for bananas preservation

Pengpeng Deng,Yushuang Zhang,Zhenyuan Niu,Yuewen Li,Zihao Wang,Fatang Jiang

Damage to the integrity of the preservation coating on the fruit surface will seriously affect the shelf life of the fruit. In this work, the strong hydrogen bond interaction between xanthan gum (XG) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) could form hydrogel films with self-healing properties. The introduction of gallic acid (GA) was beneficial to further improve the antioxidant activity and UV shielding performance of the composite films. Surprisingly, the mechanical properties and gas (water vapor, O 2 and CO 2 ) barrier properties of the KGM film crosslinked by XG were significantly improved. The experiment of banana preservation showed that the composite coating could effectively delay the water loss and browning of bananas, slow down the decomposition of pectin and starch in the flesh, and extend the shelf life of bananas for >6 days. Therefore, this multifunctional coating is an excellent packaging material and has a very broad application prospect in the field of food preservation.

Efficient adsorption of methylene blue by xanthan gum derivative modified hydroxyapatite

Xi Chen,Panyu Li,Xiaotong Zeng,Yan Kang,Jie Wang,Hongyang Xie,Yali Liu,Yongkui Zhang

In this work, hydroxyapatite modified by xanthan gum (XG) derivative material (XMH) was prepared and applied to remove methylene blue (MB) from water. The physicochemical properties of XMH were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis . Results showed the operating variables (pH, ionic strength and adsorbent dosage) were related to the MB removal efficiency. Adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. It indicated that the adsorption process was a monolayer layer adsorption and chemisorption process. Besides, the result of intra-particle diffusion model demonstrated that the intra-particle diffusion was not the only rate determining step. The maximum adsorption capability on MB was 769 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters (Δ G 0 , Δ H 0 , and Δ S 0 ) showed that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Adsorption mechanisms of MB on XMH might be governed by electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bonding. Furthermore, XMH could be regenerated well and retained MB removal efficiency of 81% after five cycles of adsorption and desorption. Therefore, XMH is a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of MB from aqueous solution due to its low cost, good thermal stability and excellent adsorption performance.

Interaction between xanthan gum and cationic cellulose JR400 in aqueous solution

Haiping Li,Wanguo Hou,Xiuzhi Li

The electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between xanthan gum (XG) and semisynthetic cationic cellulose (JR400) in aqueous solution are investigated via stability map, FT-IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, potentiometric measurement and rheological method. The stability map shows three regions, a stable region with XG as the major component, a flocculated region and another stable region with JR400 as the major component. The stability of mixing system depends on both the concentration fraction of JR400 ( f JR ) and the overlapping concentrations of these two polymers. In the region near the stoichiometric f JR , the mixture shows stoichiometric flocculation, which is independent of the total polymer concentration. However, in the regions away from the stoichiometric f JR , the mixtures are stable when the concentration of major polymer component is higher than its overlapping concentration. In stable regions, the electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions can enhance the viscosity of mixing system at appropriate f JR values.

Preparation of Nanocellulose Whisker/Polyacrylamide/Xanthan Gum Double Network Conductive Hydrogels

Zhiwei Du,Yalei Wang,Xiurong Li

Hydrogels’ poor mechanical and recovery characteristics inhibited their application as a plastic deformable three-dimensional cross-linked network polymer with electrical properties for intelligent sensing and human motion detection. Cellulose has also been added to the hydrogel to enhance its mechanical properties. The hydrogel has been enhanced this way, and the double-network hydrogel has superior recovery and mechanical capabilities. This study used the traditional free radical polymerization method to prepare double-mesh hydrogels, with polyacrylamide as the backbone network, xanthan gum double-helix structure, and Al3+complex structure as the second cross-linked network, and endowing the hydrogels with good mechanical recovery and mechanical properties. Adding cellulose nanowafers (CNWs) improved the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The hydrogel could detect body movements and various postures in the same environment. Moreover, the hydrogel has excellent recovery, mechanical properties, and tensile strain; the maximum fracture stress is 0.14 MPa, and the maximum strain is 707.1%. In addition, Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of xanthan gum and Xanthan gum—Al3+were analyzed, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and LCR bridge were used to analyze the properties of hydrogels. Notably, hydrogel-based wearable sensors have been successfully constructed to detect human movement. Its mechanical properties, sensitivity, and wide range of properties make hydrogel a great potential for various applications in wearable sensors.
