It is a water-based salt solution, usually containing sodium phosphate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride and potassium phosphate in some formulas. The osmotic molar concentration and ionic concentration of the solution match the osmotic molar concentration and ionic concentration of the human body (isotonic), and are non-toxic to most cells.

Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is commonly used as a washing buffer in protein imprinting and immunoprecipitation (IP) procedures, and for sample preparation of cell lysates for general molecular biology applications.
