Principle

Common barium salts include barium sulfate, barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium sulfide, barium nitrate, etc. Except for barium sulfate, all other barium salts are toxic.

Two mice with similar body weights (18-22 g) were taken and observed for normal activities, then one mouse was gavaged with 0.5 ml of 5% barium sulfate solution and the other mouse was gavaged with 0.5 ml of 5% barium chloride, and were placed in the cages of the mice for 60 min to observe what reactions appeared.

Caveat

1. Barium ion, with central inhibition, smooth muscle excitation and other toxic effects, pay attention to safety.

2. Barium sulfate is extremely difficult to dissolve barium salt, when shaking well after application. Barium chloride is very soluble in water.

3. A control group should be set up at the same time in the experiment, and the comparison between the control group and the experimental group should be used to eliminate the influence of various irrelevant factors, so that the error of the experimental results can be minimized as much as possible to achieve the purpose of correctly evaluating the effect of the drug.
