Scabies mite morphology observation experiment

Principle

The scabies mite is a permanent parasitic mite that lives in the epidermal layer of the host's skin and causes scabies. The mite that parasitizes humans is the Sarcoptes scabiei hominis, and its life history is divided into five stages: egg, larva, two instars, and adult.

I. Self-observation

1. Take a live scabies mite from a rabbit and observe its slow activity.

2. Observe the specimen of scabies mite on slide, first observe it with naked eye, pay attention to its size, and then observe the general morphology under microscope.

Palpus: very small, at the front end of the carapace, composed of 1 pair of chelicerae and 1 pair of antennae.

Carapace: no eyes, no valves. Ventral surface with 4 pairs of feet, two pairs anteriorly and two pairs posteriorly. The first two pairs of legs end with stalked sucking pads in both sexes; the last two pairs of legs are different in sexes, with a long hair at the end of each leg in females and a stalked sucking pad at the end of the fourth pair of legs in male mites. The anus is located at the end of the body. The ovipositor pore of the female scabies mite is in the center of the ventral surface, and the mating pore is located at the end of the carapace. The external genitalia of the male scabies mite are located between the hind two legs.

II. Demonstration

Scabies mite larvae slide specimen: similar to adult, only 3 pairs of legs, two pairs of legs in the first group, each with a sucking pad at the end, and one pair of legs in the second pair, each with a long hair.
