摘要

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are in great demand for wastewater reclamation and resource recovery owing to their simple operation, moderate conditions, and cost-effectiveness. However, membrane fouling remains a bottleneck in the process of utilizing NF membranes, especially for industrial effluent treatment. Inspired by the hierarchical wettability of shark skin with hydrophilic “shield scale intermediate layer” and low-surface-energy “mucus outer layer”, a highly effective dual-defensive antifouling NF membrane with special hydrophilic and oleophobic wettability is engineered by a simple hydrothermal cross-linking method. The special hierarchical surface wettability imparts the membrane with superior fouling-resistance and fouling-release properties. The hydrophilic wettability endows the membrane with fouling-resistance property, enabling it to achieve the water flux recovery ratio (FRR) above 90% for bovine serum albumin, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide model foulants. The oleophobic wettability facilitates the membrane with fouling-release property, showing the FRR up to 94% for pump oil-in-water emulsion. More importantly, combined with the special hydrophilic and oleophobic wettability, the dual-defensive NF membrane with fouling-resistance and fouling-release properties achieved a FRR of 83% for practical oil-containing secondary effluent from the petrochemical industry, representing 1.2 times the value of the control single-defensive hydrophilic NF membrane. The Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory further reveals a higher interfacial energy between foulants and membranes compared to the control group, indicating reduced foulants’ adsorption and improved foulants’ release. This work provides a simple and efficient construction of a bionic interface to improve the antifouling performance of the NF membrane.
