The effects of Fe(II) and humic acid on U(VI) immobilization onto oxidized carbon nanofibers (Ox-CNFs, pyrolysis of bacterial cellulose) were investigated by batch, spectroscopic and modeling techniques, with results suggesting that, Ox-CNFs exhibited fast adsorption rate (adsorption equilibrium within 3 h), high adsorption performance (maximum adsorption capacity of 208.4 mg/g), good recyclability (no notable change after five regenerations) in the presence of Fe(II) towards U(VI) from aqueous solutions (e.g., 40 % reduction and 10 % adsorption at pH 8.0), which was attributed to the various oxygen-containing functional groups, excellent chemical stability, large specific surface area and high redox effect. U(VI) adsorption increased with increasing pH from 2.0 to 5.0, then high-level plateau and remarkable decrease were observed at 5.0–6.0 and at pH > 6.0, respectively. According to FT-IR and XPS analysis, a negative correlation between U(VI) reduction and organic in the presence of Fe(II) implied that U(VI) reduction was driven by Fe(II) while inhibited by humic acid. The interaction mechanism of U(VI) on Ox-CNFs was demonstrated to be adsorption and ion exchange at low pH and reduction at high pH according to XPS and surface complexation modeling. These findings filled the knowledge gaps pertaining to the effect of Fe(II) on the transformation and fate of U(VI) in the actual environment. This carbon material with distinctive performance and unique topology offers a potential platform for actual application in environmental remediation.

U(VI) in nuclear wastewater threatens human health and the environment due to its high toxicity and mobility. Photocatalysis is seen as a promising, simple, low-cost, and sustainable method for wastewater treatment, but existing photocatalysts face challenges like complex preparation and severe electron-hole recombination. In this work, ellipsoidal Se-linked ZnSe/ZnO was in situ constructed using a simple one-pot hydrothermal method, with non-metallic selenium serving as the carrier. In 30 minutes, the removal rate of U(VI) can reach 90.2 % in 100 mg/L U(VI) solution. The reaction kinetics of the optimal Se/ZnSe/ZnO ratio reached 0.14939 min −1 , which is nearly 10 times that of pure ZnO. Photocatalytic analysis revealed that introducing Se as the medium for electron transport in the composite material can effectively reduce electron-hole recombination, thereby enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. The results of this study offer a simple and efficient new method for photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) and provide an effective strategy for establishing a conductive medium in the heterojunction using a one-pot hydrothermal method.

A defective metal–organic framework UiO-66–18 synthesized via a facile solvothermal synthesis method with trifluoroacetic acid as modulator was demonstrated to be highly efficient for the elimination of uranium from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacity of UiO-66–18 toward uranium reached 622.75 mg g −1 , which was approximately 1.43 times higher than that of pristine UiO-66–0 prepared without TFA modulation. The superior elimination performance of UiO-66–18 was because the TFA modulation induced the generation of more missing-linker defects that endowed UiO-66–18 with hierarchical structure and more adsorption active sites for U(VI) capture. Further adsorption mechanism studies indicated that the elimination of U(VI) was endothermic monolayer chemisorption dominated by mass transfer-decomplexation-adsorption process. In addition, the effects of common ions on the elimination efficiency as well as the reusability of UiO-66–0 and UiO-66–18 were studied. This work provides a promising strategy and a theoretical basis for the design and preparation of efficient uranium adsorbent from the points of defects engineering and pore structure design.

The utilization of biocompatible and inexpensive adsorbents for the effective scavenging of U(VI) and Eu(III) from wastewater is still an open challenge in nuclear waste management. Herein, three kinds of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals with different morphologies, i.e., α-Fe 2 O 3 nanospheres (HNSs), nanoplates (HNPs) and nanorods (HNRs), which were exposed (1 0 2), (0 0 1), and (1 1 0) facet, respectively, was used to scavenge U(VI) and Eu(III) from aqueous solutions via an adsorption procedure. Various techniques of N 2 adsorption–desorption, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM and EDS were applied to characterize these adsorbents before or after adsorption. The results indicated that the adsorption capacity of U(VI) and Eu(III) was in the order of HNPs (0 0 1) > HNRs (1 1 0) > HNSs (1 0 2), namely, α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoplates was proved to be a good adsorbents, with removal capacity of 221 mg/g and 131 mg/g for U(VI) and Eu(III) scavenged on HNPs, respectively. The kinetics of U(VI) and Eu(III) scavenging agreed with the pseudo second order kinetic model, suggesting that chemical interaction is mainly responsible for U(VI) and Eu(III) scavenging on these materials. Furthermore, the Freundlich model fit the best for adsorption isotherms of U(VI) and Eu(III). The present study demonstrated that these α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals are promising materials in nuclear waste management.

The combined chemotoxicity and radiotoxicity associated with uranium, utilized in nuclear industry and military applications, poses significant threats to human health. Among uranium pollutants, uranyl is particularly concerning due to its high absorptivity and potent nephrotoxicity in its + 6 valence state. Here, we have serendipitously found Na 2 SeO 3 facilitates the conversion of U(VI) to U(IV) precipitates. A novel approach involving nano-chitosan loaded internally with melatonin and externally modified with selenite (NPs Cs-Se/MEL) was introduced. This modification not only enhances the conversion of U(VI) to U(IV) but also preserves the spherical nanostructure and specific surface area, leading to increased adsorption of U(VI) compared to unmodified samples. Selenite modification improves lysosomal delivery in HEK-293 T cells and kidney distribution of the nanoparticles. Furthermore, NPs Cs-Se/MEL demonstrated a heightened uranium concentration in urine and exhibited remarkable efficiency in uranium removal, resulting in a reduction of uranium deposition in serum, kidneys, and femurs by up to 52.02 %, 46.79 %, and 71.04 %, respectively. Importantly, NPs Cs-Se/MEL can be excreted directly from the kidneys into urine when carrying uranium. The results presented a novel mechanism for uranium adsorption, making selenium-containing nano-materials attractive for uranium sequestration and detoxification.

Electrochemical extraction of uranium from seawater is a promising strategy for the sustainable supply of nuclear fuel, whereas the current progress suffers from the co-deposition of impurities. Herein, we construct a synergistic coordination-reduction interface in CMOS@NSF, achieving electrochemical extraction of black UO 2 product from seawater. The internal sulfur of CoMoOS tailors the electron distribution, resulting in the electron accumulation of terminal O sites for strong uranyl binding. Meanwhile, the interfacial connection of CoMoOS with Ni 3 S 2 accelerates the electron transfer and promoted the reductive properties. Such synergistic coordination-reduction interface ensures the formation and preservation of tetravalent uranium, preventing the co-deposition of alkalis in crystalline transformation. From natural seawater, CMOS@NSF exhibits an electrochemical extraction capacity of 2.65 mg g −1 d −1 with black UO 2 solid products as final products. This work provides an efficient strategy for the electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater with low impurities.

Electrochemical uranium extraction from real nuclear wastewater with a high concentration of fluoride ions (F-) represents a promising strategy for the efficient treatment of radioactive wastewater and the recovery of the valuable uranium resource. However, the current progress suffers from the interference of extremely high concentration of F- and undesired purity of the final uranium product. Herein, we constructed the neighboring ensemble Lewis acid-base pair sites (ensemble Lewis sites) in bismuth oxides as the extraction material, which was integrated into a designed tandem electrochemical device for efficient recovery of high-purity uranium from real nuclear wastewater. The mechanistic study revealed that the ensemble Lewis sites dramatically enhance the binding of all dominant uranyl fluoride (UO2Fx) species through the simultaneous strengthened chemical bonds with U, O, and F atoms. Besides, the tandem electrochemical device rationally controlled the reaction period to U3O8, avoiding the undesired crystalline transformation to K2U2O7. Through 3 h electrolysis in 1 L of real nuclear wastewater, the extraction efficiency of uranium reached 99.9 % with only 2.2 % impurities of alkali metals in extracted uranium product, outperforming the previous work. This study offers an effective method for the recovery of uranium resources in real nuclear wastewater.

Photo-assisted uranium extraction from seawater is regarded as a potential technique for uranium resource recovery. Here, we report a polymeric carbon nitride (SCN-C 3 N 4 ) synthesized via a one-step calcination method, which combines cyano groups (-C≡N) modification and S atoms doping for efficient uranium extraction. By DFT calculations, we confirm that the integration of -C≡N modification and S atoms doping effectively reconstructed the charge distribution on the inside of the heptazine rings, forming a strong driving force for the migration of photogenerated electrons to the reactive sites. Accordingly, the reaction rate constant of SCN-C 3 N 4 ( k = 0.00843 min −1 ) is 20.07 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 ( k = 0.00042 min −1 ). Finally, the SCN-C 3 N 4 exhibits a remarkable uranium extraction capacity of 6.05 mg g −1 in natural seawater. Relying on various spectroscopic techniques, we identify the reaction process of uranium, which is captured by -C≡N, forming UO 2.34 crystallization under the joint action of electrons and free radicals. Furthermore, SCN-C 3 N 4 demonstrates excellent antibacterial and corrosion resistance, breaking the bottleneck of uranium extraction from marine biofouling. This work provides an example of designing novel polymeric carbon nitride materials for uranium extraction.

BACKGROUND Soil in uranium mining areas is contaminated by uranium and associated heavy metals, posing a significant threat to human health and ecological security. Chelating agent assisted phytoremediation is a cost-effective and ecologically friendly remediation approach for uranium and associated heavy metals contaminated soil. In this work, a novel slow-release composite chelating agent (SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC) was fabricated using carboxymethyl chitosan-graft-carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CMC-g-CMCD) as a slow-release carrier and EDTA/ammonium citrate (AC) as a composite chelating agent through the spray drying method, which was used for phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with uranium and chromium. RESULTS CMC-g-CMCD exhibited superior slow-release performance for both EDTA and AC in comparison with CMC and CMCD. When applied to soil contaminated with uranium (U) and chromium (Cr), SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC effectively regulated the release of U and Cr. Sunflowers ( Helianthus annuus L.) grown in treated soil showed a significant increase in U and Cr uptake by 70.55% and 35.55%, respectively, and reduced leaching losses by 34.88% and 37.42%. CONCLUSION SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC not only assists in the phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with U and Cr but also reduces the risk of leaching into groundwater during the soil phytoremediation process. SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC-assisted phytoremediation technology was an effective and environmentally friendly remediation means for the removal of U and heavy metals from contaminated soils in uranium mining areas. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

The introduction of MoS 2 is beneficial to the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs for CdS/TiO 2 . Herein, MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method at 200 °C and applied to photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The batch characterizations showed the irregular spherical MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites with low bandgap (1.95 eV) and high chemical stability. MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites displayed the rapid removal rate of U(VI) (more than 90 % under 15 min illumination), good regeneration (> 91 % after four cycles) due to the highly efficient separation of electron-hole pair. The possible photocatalytic pathway was demonstrated to be the main active ·O 2 − radical by quenching experiments, ESR and XPS analysis. This work highlights the potential application of MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 on removal of radioactive wastewater in the actual remediation.

Carbon-based catalysts are promising materials for the electrochemical extraction of uranium from seawater. However, their practical application is often limited by high cost and low catalytic activity. Using low-cost polystyrene sulfonic acid resin and melamine as raw materials, a class of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanosheets (CNSs) with high catalytic activity has been developed by a low-temperature hydrothermal treatment and high-temperature carbonization. Because of their high conductivity and high catalytic activity, CNS-based electrodes can catalyze uranyl ions in seawater into easily recoverable Na 2 O(UO 3 ·H 2 O) x precipitates at −2 V, and achieve an extraction capacity of up to 3 923.7 mg g −1 with a uranium removal of 98.1% in uranium-spiked seawater (1×10 3 mg L −1 ). In situ Raman spectroscopy showed that a large number of uranium compounds appeared on the surface of the composite electrode within 40 min of extraction. The electrode also recovered 72.7% of the uranium in natural seawater, demonstrating excellent prospects for this application. This work provides a new approach into the design of low-cost, metal-free electrocatalysts for the efficient uranium extraction from natural seawater.

Extracting uranium from seawater not only reduces radioactive contamination in seawater but also provides a source of uranium energy. However, due to the low concentration of uranium in seawater and the high salinity of seawater, extraction of uranium from seawater is challenging. In this work, we demonstrated a simple strategy to synthesize Fe-doped MXene (Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via a hydrothermal method and applied for uranium enrichment in seawater. The Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited excellent adsorption performance in high salinity environments. The removal capacity of Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x was determined to be 526.6 mg/g for UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− at 328 K with quick reaction equilibrium (∼ 30 min). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− elimination process on Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x surface revealed it to be a spontaneous and endothermic single-phase elimination process. FT-IR and XPS analyses further indicated that the removal mechanism of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− by Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x was surface complexation. Our study suggests that Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x can provide a feasible solution for uranium enrichment in seawater.
