The oxidation property of SiC-B 4 C- x Al 2 O 3 ( x ranges from 0 wt% to 30 wt%) ceramics was studied in air at 1400 ℃. Results show that the porous oxide layer becomes dense and smooth with addition of Al 2 O 3 . When the content of Al 2 O 3 is proper, the DOP (degree of polymerization) of borosilicate network can be improved with increase of Al 2 O 3 content, inhibiting the migration of atoms and molecular groups. With that, the crystallization of SiO 2 and volatilization of B 2 O 3 can be restrained. When the content of Al 2 O 3 is excessive, the DOP of borosilicate network will be decreased, deteriorating the oxide layer morphology. It is believed that the damage of borosilicate network by excess Al 2 O 3 should be responsible for this phenomenon. In this research, the SiC-B 4 C ceramic with optimal oxidation resistant can be obtained when the content of Al 2 O 3 is 15 wt%.

Rod-like ZrB 2 crystals were synthesized at 1600 °C in Ar atmosphere by boro/carbothermal reduction using ZrOCl 2 ⋅8H 2 O, B 4 C and carbon powders as raw materials. The optimum molar ratio of raw materials required to form pure ZrB 2 grains was found to be 2: 1.2: 3. With increase in temperature and subsequent heat preservation stage, ZrB 2 powders grew into a rod-like morphology along the c axis. The rod-like ZrB 2 grains obtained at 1600 °C have diameters of 0.5–3 μm and high aspect ratios of >8. Effects of molar ratio of raw materials, heating temperature and holding time on the phase composition and final morphology were investigated. Growth mechanism of rod-like ZrB 2 grains was also analyzed.

We obtained a series of B 6 O, B 4 C, ZrB 2 crystals at a pressure of 6 GPa and temperature of 1673–1973 K. These crystals were characterized by XRD and SEM. At a pressure of 6 GPa, the minimum synthesis temperature for B 6 O is 1673 K. The grain size of B 6 O in all the samples remained consistent at around 30–50 nm, with a uniform distribution in each sample. The bonding force between B 6 O grains is weak, and the B 6 O grain size remains relatively stable, showing minimal change with increasing temperature and time. In the sample synthesized at 1973 K, B 6 O icosahedra (multiply twinned particles, MTPs) with a diameter of 12 μm, B 4 C particles with a diameter of 25 μm, and flaky ZrB 2 were observed. We conducted theoretical calculations on B 6 O and B 4 C using density functional theory (DFT).

A synergistic enhancement in bending strength, hardness, and fracture toughness while maintaining low density in B 4 C ceramics remains a challenge. Herein, we propose to design a simple three-layer symmetrical sandwich-type laminated structure of B 4 C-TiB 2 by imitating the nacre's structure, which effectively minimizes interfacial defects and achieves stronger interfacial bonding via reactive sintering using B 4 C, TiC, and B as starting materials. The simple symmetric design generates residual compressive stress in both outer layers and tensile stress in the middle layer. It has been found that the residual compressive stress can counteract external loads and lead to a remarkable improvement in hardness and bending strength. Furthermore, a rising R-curve behavior is observed in the fracture toughness testing of laminated B 4 C-TiB 2 ceramics, indicating superior resistance to crack propagation. Compared to monolithic ceramics, the as-synthesized laminated B 4 C-TiB 2 ceramic exhibits amazing comprehensive properties with a high hardness of 37.1 ± 0.4 GPa, bending strength of 834.3 ± 62.8 MPa, and fracture toughness of 5.0 MPa·m 1/2 . This work provides precise guidance for the design of impact-resistant ceramics by offering an in-depth understanding of how residual compressive stress affects mechanical properties.

In this study, B 4 C@ZrB 2 core-shell powders were synthesized via a molten-salt method and subsequently consolidated with an Al 2 O 3 matrix by spark plasma sintering (SPS) to fabricate Al 2 O 3 -B 4 C@ZrB 2 composite ceramics. The core-shell architecture, consisting of a micron-sized B 4 C core coated with a submicron-thick ZrB 2 shell, was preserved in the sintered composites, forming well-defined composite toughening units. This unique geometric configuration, combined with multi-dimensional heterogeneities in phase composition (Al 2 O 3 /B 4 C/ZrB 2 ), grain size (micron/submicron), and thermal expansion coefficients (7.2/4.5/6.2 ×10 −6 K −1 ), actively induces multi-dimensional crack propagation: first along the Al 2 O 3 -ZrB 2 interface, then through the submicron‑thick ZrB 2 shell, along the micron‑sized B 4 C-ZrB 2 interface, out through the ZrB 2 shell again, and finally along the ZrB 2 -Al 2 O 3 interface before re-entering the Al 2 O 3 matrix. Such a shuttling behavior across multiple interfaces collectively dissipates substantial crack-propagation energy. The composite sintered at 1500 °C reached near-full densification (relative density 99.78 ± 0.12%) and exhibited excellent mechanical properties: Vickers hardness of 19.23 ± 0.19 GPa, flexural strength of 548 ± 31 MPa and fracture toughness of 6.79 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 (indentation method) and 6.27 ± 0.42 MPa·m 1/2 (SENB method). This work provides a new strategy for developing high‑performance structural ceramics.

In the present study a novel bilayer composite consisting of a tough layer (AA7075) and hard layer (AA7075/B 4 C composite), was successfully synthesized using plasma activated sintering. No obvious defects such as porosity, cracks, or delamination were observed in the as-processed bilayer composite. Transmission electron microscopy results suggest that dislocation density in the vicinity of B 4 C particles is higher relative to that of the unreinforced layer, as imaged with the [011] zone axis. The precipitation behavior is significantly different in the two layers, despite identical process conditions. Moreover, no obvious precipitates free zones were observed in the interfacial region between the two layers. To provide insight into the mechanical behavior of the bilayer composites, we measured the bending strength on two different load-bearing surfaces. Our results indicate that when the AA7075/B 4 C layer was loaded under tensile conditions, the AA7075/B 4 C composite was prone to crack formation and catastrophic failure . In contrast, when the AA7075 layer was loaded in tensile, the bilayer composite achieved a notable bending strength value of 1234 ± 72 MPa, which is higher relative to that of aforementioned case (938 ± 85 MPa). Interestingly, no interfacial cracks or delamination were observed under these testing conditions. In addition, the fracture mechanisms that are active in the bilayer composites for the load bearing conditions studied were discussed in detail.

In this study, B 4 C–TiB 2 composite materials were successfully fabricated via in situ reaction using a high-pressure and high-temperature sintering with 90 wt % B 4 C and 10 wt % TiO 2 as raw materials. The influence of holding time (2–10 min) at a constant pressure of 5 GPa and temperature of 1500°C on the densification behavior, phase composition, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties was investigated. The results reveal that the holding time significantly affects both the densification kinetics and the formation of the TiB 2 reinforcing phase. Optimal mechanical performance was achieved when the holding time was 8 min, yielding a relative density of 99.6%, Vickers hardness of 35.3 GPa, flexural strength of 675 MPa, and fracture toughness of 6.8 MPa m 1/2 . The enhanced mechanical properties are primarily attributed to the complete in-situ formation of TiB 2 particles, which effectively improve fracture toughness through mechanisms such as crack deflection and bridging. This work provides critical insights into optimizing the sintering process for high-performance B 4 C-based composites, offering a scientific basis for their development and application in extreme environments.

Boron carbide (B 4 C) ceramics exhibit exceptional hardness and low density, making them promising candidates for structural applications in extreme environments. However, their widespread adoption is hindered by poor sinterability and low fracture toughness. Balancing hardness, strength, and toughness in B 4 C ceramics remains a significant challenge owing to the inherent trade-offs among these properties. To overcome this, a fine and uniform dual-grained B 4 C–TiB 2 composite was fabricated by in-situ reactive sintering of TiO 2 , graphite, and a bimodal B 4 C powder. A two-step ball-milling process during powder preparation was pivotal in eliminating TiB 2 agglomeration and ensuring microstructural homogeneity. The resultant composite achieved a synergistic enhancement in flexural strength (786 ± 51 MPa), fracture toughness (5.66 ± 1.44 MPa·m 1/2 ), and Vickers hardness (35.5 ± 1.1 GPa). The high strength and hardness are attributed to pronounced grain refinement and low open porosity. The enhanced toughness originates from synergistic mechanisms: crack-inhibiting compressive residual stress and transition to a mixed transgranular/intergranular fracture mode facilitated by locally concentrated sub-micron B 4 C grains. It is demonstrated that grain-size engineering by powder design is a viable strategy for developing lightweight ceramic composites with a superior balance of strength, hardness, and toughness.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation represents a sustainable pathway to mitigate global water scarcity; however, its practical implementation is often constrained by the trade-off between high efficiency, structural complexity, and susceptibility to salt fouling. Herein, we developed a scalable, cost-effective solar evaporator fabricated from boron carbide (B 4 C) nanoparticles, which is anchored on a groove-engineered polyurethane (PU) foam within a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix, bridging the gap between efficiency and scalability. This cavity-inspired grooved structure couples efficient photothermal conversion, local heat confinement without any solar concentrator, and fast water transport with effective hydrophilicity (zero contact angle). The effective heat localization realized in these grooved structures (42.16 °C) than plain structure (39.06 °C), as simulated through COMSOL heat transfer simulations. Under one-sun irradiation, the optimized evaporator achieves an evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 , a value increased by 28 % compared with plain structure systems (1.21 kg m −2 h −1 ) while maintaining stable performance across diverse aqueous environments, including seawater, river water, and industrial effluents (MO, MB, RhB) with varying salinity and pH. The system also exhibits exceptional antifouling characteristics, with >99 % salt rejection and > 98 % removal of heavy metal ions (Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ ). This work combines material innovation with structure design and pushes the development of robust, high-throughput solar evaporators for the real world for desalination and wastewater treatment. The B 4 C@PU system thereby provides a green route for alleviating water scarcity by simultaneously solving the critical bottlenecks of density, cost, and salt fouling.

Gd 2 O 3 nanospheres (NSs) with three controlled sizes were synthesized via a homogeneous precipitation method. Both synthesized (Syn-) and commercial (Com-) Gd 2 O 3 fillers were employed as bifunctional neutron and gamma radiation absorbing agents to fabricate radiation shielding (RS) materials. FESEM confirmed the nanospherical morphology of Syn-Gd 2 O 3 fillers. HRTEM and SEAD indicate that all Gd 2 O 3 fillers are polycrystalline. HRTEM confirmed that the Syn-Gd 2 O 3 fillers have (321), (400), and (521) exposed crystal planes, while the Com-Gd 2 O 3 fillers have (222) exposed crystal planes, aligning with the corresponding XRD patterns. FESEM of fracture surfaces revealed a more uniform distribution of Syn-Gd 2 O 3 -NS fillers within the HDPE matrix compared to the irregularly shaped Com-Gd 2 O 3 fillers. The high specific surface area (SSA) and superior dispersibility of Syn-Gd 2 O 3 fillers enhanced the overall performance of the nanocomposite (NC). Notably, NCs containing Syn-Gd 2 O 3 -Ⅱ NSs with an average size of 82.6 ± 14.2 nm achieved a neutron and gamma shielding rates of 99.3% and 73.7%, the Σ , μ , μ m , HVL are 0.239 cm -1 , 0.092 cm -1 , 0.076 cm 2 /g, 7.57 cm, correspondingly, at a thickness of 15 cm, demonstrating its potential for high-performance radiation shielding applications. This study provides a novel strategy for designing lightweight, high-performance radiation shielding materials for nuclear facilities, aerospace applications, radioactive waste conditioning and relative fields.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) arouse researchers’ interest gradually because of the scarcity of lithium sources. VSe 2 is one of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) equipped with a huge interlayer distance to accommodate more Na + ions, but the problems such as agglomeration, volume deformation, dissolution loss and so on hinder its further development. Therefore, a VSe 2 /B 4 C@HCG composite was fabricated by the simple high-energy ball milling method. The B 4 C and VSe 2 nanoparticles are mixed and restrict each other, then anchor on the graphene, which alleviates agglomeration and volume deformation of VSe 2 during cycling processes effectively, and improves the overall environmental stability and conductivity. As a result, the VSe 2 /B 4 C@HCG composite delivers a reversible capacity of 407.5 mAh g −1 with the coulombic efficiency of 98.5% after 450 cycles, superior rate performance of 524.2, 476.3, 413.7, 353.7, and 295.3 mAh g −1 at the different current density of 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 mA g −1 , and ultrastable long-term cycling property of 251.6 mAh g −1 at the current density of 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles, indicating the VSe 2 /B 4 C@HCG composite shows utilization potentiality to be used as an excellent anode material for SIBs.

Ti6Al4V (TC4) titanium alloy is often limited by its insufficient strength and inadequate high-temperature oxidation resistance under demanding service conditions. The introduction of ceramic reinforcing phases to form titanium matrix composites (TMCs) presents an effective approach for enhancing its overall performance. In this study, high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) processing (5.5 GPa, 1000/1800 °C) was applied to sinter pure TC4 powder and TC4 powder doped with 1 wt% B 4 C, with systematic investigation of their microstructural evolution and properties. The results demonstrate that HPHT treatment significantly improves the density, hardness, and compressive strength of pure TC4. For example, after treatment at 1800 °C, pure TC4 reached a hardness of 471 HV and a compressive strength of 1720 MPa, exceeding the properties of cast TC4 (305 HV, 997 MPa). The TC4–1 wt% B 4 C composite sintered at 1800 °C exhibited even higher hardness (553 HV) and compressive strength (1875 MPa). Importantly, the composite also demonstrated superior electrochemical corrosion resistance and improved oxidation resistance at 700 °C compared to pure TC4. This work confirms that HPHT is an effective technique for fabricating high-performance TMCs, offering a viable strategy for simultaneously enhancing mechanical strength and environmental resistance.
