The development of advanced carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic resin (CFRHTP) composites is heavily reliant on the quality of the interface bonding between CFs and the matrix. This article presented a novel surface modification strategy for CFs that utilized electrochemical polymerization and chemical grafting. Polyo-phenylenediamine (PoPD)/graphene oxide (GO) organic/inorganic hybrid multi-scale structures were successfully constructed on the surface of the CFs, which significantly enhanced the fiber's surface roughness, and the introduction of nitrogen-containing active groups improved fiber wettability and absorption efficiency for the PPESK matrix. The tensile strength of single CF monofilaments increased from 3.34 to 3.63 GPa. Due to the enhanced interface bonding and the formation of an interface phase with modulus transition characteristics, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength, and tensile strength of the CF/PPESK composite reached 85.1, 1573, and 2535 MPa, respectively, representing increases of 35.7%, 55.4%, and 40.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the failure mode of the composite transitioned from interface debonding to plastic deformation and GO slippage within the resin matrix. In conclusion, this study provides a promising interface modification strategy that can significantly enhance the performance of advanced CFRHTPs.

In this work, YB 4 -CrSi 2 surface-modified C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were fabricated by a slurry coating method. The cyclic ablation resistance of the composites was studied at 2600 °C for 300 s using an air plasma test. The ablation mechanisms of the composites were discussed. The Y 3+ can prevent the phase transition of the ZrO 2 and increase the structural stability of the oxide layer. But the oxide layer cannot prevent the inward O penetration resulting from the forming of Zr 0.9 Y 0.1 O 1.95 grains with abundant oxygen vacancy. After the modification of CrSi 2 , the size of Zr 0.9 Y 0.1 O 1.95 grains can be reduced to nano scale. The adequate SiO 2 glassy phase with the uniform distribution of the Zr 0.9 Y 0.1 O 1.95 nano grains can prevent the O penetration effectively and reduce the mass recession rate of the composites.

This study investigates the interlaminar toughening of bismaleimide/carbon fiber (BMI/CF) composite laminates using modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) deposited via spray coating technology. Pristine CNTs were functionalized through chemical modification (grafting 5-aminoisophthalic acid small molecules to yield CNT-COOH) and physical modification (coating with a layer of polydopamine to produce CNT@PDA) to enhance dispersion within the composite matrix. While both modification methods improved the dispersion of CNTs, their thermal stabilities during composite molding led to contrasting toughening outcomes. Chemically grafted CNT-COOH demonstrated superior performance, achieving a 20 % increase in mode I fracture toughness (G IC ) and a 32.37 % increase in mode II fracture toughness (G IIC ). In contrast, physically coated CNT@PDA exhibited reduced toughening efficacy compared to the baseline in both mode I and mode II fracture toughness. This can be attributed to the poorer thermal stability of the physically coated CNT@PDA than that of chemically grafted CNT-COOH. On one hand, the coating material PDA itself has poor thermal stability which is highly prone to decomposition during high-temperature molding. On the other hand, it can be influenced by the methods of CNT modification. The bonding mechanisms of chemical grafting (covalent bonds) and physical coating (van der Waals forces and other physical interactions) differ, leading to varying stability under high temperatures. The decomposition of the coating material and the high-temperature failure of van der Waals forces diminished surface functional groups and introduced defects around the CNTs, significantly compromising interlaminar fracture toughness. The findings underscore the critical role of thermal stability in determining the effectiveness of nanomodification strategies for advanced composite materials.

Reactive hot pressing technology facilitates the rapid densification and sintering of UHTC-based composites, presenting significant potential for applications in the aerospace field. However, challenges persist in achieving uniform dispersion of fibers and lowering the densification temperature required for optimal consolidation. In this work, the ZrSi 2 , B 4 C and active carbon were used as the raw materials, and the 3D C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite with an open porosity of 0.91% were successfully fabricated through the slurry impregnation-drying cycles followed by a reactive hot pressing at 1800 °C. The microstructure evolution and high-temperature mechanical properties were also systematically investigated. The microstructure analysis found that the in situ reaction of ZrSi 2 , B 4 C and active carbon during sintering led to the formation of ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic matrix and effectively promoted densification. The 3D C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite exhibited an average flexural strength of 232.9 MPa at RT, retaining a value of 112.1 MPa at 1200 °C.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in modern industry. However, poor heat transfer between layers of carbon fiber cloth during the curing process leading to poor curing of the substrate, long curing cycles, and excessive heat accumulation has become an urgent problem to be solved. A common approach is dispersing highly thermally conductive fillers in the polymer matrix to improve the curing efficiency of the composites. Different from adding fillers, we report a novel method of in situ growth of SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) on the surface of carbon fiber (CF) by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and study the effects of CVD deposition time on curing efficiency and thermal stability of the composites. The results indicate that the nano bridge effect of SiCNWs significantly improves the curing efficiency of the composites. Compared with pure CF/epoxy composites, the curing efficiency can be increased by 38.72%. The cross-linking point between SiCNWs and the resin matrix enhances the thermal stability of the composites and increases the heat resistance index (THRI) by 8.4°C.

In the present study, CF-ZrO 2 /ZrC composites with controllable coating thickness were prepared by an in-situ sol-gel method. Through pretreatment , the carbon fibers surface changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic and the polar groups on the surface significantly increased, which increased the interface affinity and ensured the stabilities of uniform ZrO 2 /ZrC coatings preparation. The coating layer increases the thickness of the composites, prolonged the mass and heat transfer on the composites surface. The dense ZrO 2 /ZrC coating prevents further oxidation of internal C by oxidative gas. As a result, after 4 cycles sol-gel, the mass ablation rate of the composite is decreased from 0.046 to 0.022 mg s −1 , under the butane flame for 120s. And the thermal decomposition temperatures are 10.8%–15% higher than those of the original carbon fiber. Thus, this in-situ sol-gel method is a feasible for preparing carbon fiber self-reinforced composites with uniform coating and designable structure, which can effectively improve the ablative resistance ability and thermal decomposition temperature of composites.

Three-dimensional (3D) C f /SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 composites were successfully fabricated by sol-gel process combined with reactive melt infiltration (RMI) method. With H 3 BO 3 and PVA as raw materials for gel precursor, a porous C-B 4 C matrix was first introduced into the 3D carbon fiber preform by impregnation of the gel precursor, followed by heat-treatments of pyrolysis and carbothermal processes at 1500 °C in Ar atmosphere . Then molten ZrSi 2 alloys were infiltrated into the 3D C f /C-B 4 C preform to obtain 3D C f /SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 composites. Based on thermodynamic analysis , the formation mechanism of SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 matrix was revealed. Oxidation resistance and ablation resistance properties of the fabricated 3D C f /SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 composites were tested using a muffle furnace and a plasma wind tunnel equipment, respectively. The flexural strength of the as prepared composites and its strength retention after oxidation were evaluated. It is revealed that the 3D C f /SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 composites showed superior flexural strength , good oxidation resistance and excellent anti-ablation properties.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) are widely employed in high-end load-bearing structures. However, their inherently low damping capacity and the trade-off relationship with stiffness pose challenges in meeting the integrated requirements of load-bearing and vibration reduction. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel interlayer hybrid damping design strategy based on high-/low-modulus epoxy resin-based carbon fiber (CF) prepregs. This approach utilizes high-modulus prepregs to maintain structural stiffness while employing low-modulus, high-loss prepregs to dissipate vibrational energy, achieving synergistic optimization of damping and stiffness through controlled hybrid ratios. Results demonstrate that this strategy, leveraging the dual energy dissipation mechanisms of high internal loss characteristics in low-modulus components and interfacial friction induced by modulus mismatch, achieves a maximum enhancement of 152.21% in modal damping ratio. Meanwhile, mechanical properties are influenced by the weighted contributions of component properties and interfacial stress concentration effects, resulting in maximum reductions of 11.87% in modal frequency and 25.41% in bending stiffness, respectively. This study breaks through traditional design limitations and provides a new approach for addressing the integrated design challenges of load-bearing and vibration reduction in CFRP applications. Graphical Through the synthesis of a type of high-loss and low-modulus prepreg resin, the hybrid damping design of high-/low-modulus resin carbon fiber prepregs is realized, and the contradictory balance between the damping and stiffness of CFRP is improved.

The interfacial characteristics of carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites critically determine their mechanical performance. While CFs modified with nanoparticles demonstrate efficacy in interface regulation of composites, conventional methodologies are typically accompanied by limitations, including high cost of raw materials, nanoparticle agglomeration tendencies, and demanding synthesis conditions, rendering them impractical for large-scale applications. This study presents a simplified, cost-effective technique for in situ synthesis of inorganic copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles on CF surfaces. Utilizing copper chloride dihydrate (CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O) and sodium sulfide nonahydrate (Na 2 S·9H 2 O) as precursors, nano-CuS particles with diverse chemical structures and physical morphologies were controllably synthesized in situ on CF surfaces by regulating the ratio of copper-to-sulfur ions. Results indicate significantly improved surface activity, wettability, and smooth surface morphology for the modified CFs. Consequently, the resulting CFO–CuS 1:1 /Polyamide 6 (PA6) composites manifest superior interfacial and mechanical properties, with an interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of 65.8 MPa and flexural strength of 959.0 MPa. These values represent 19.6% and 24.8% improvements over unsized CF/PA6 composites, respectively. In addition, the thermal conduction performance of CFO–CuS 1:1 /PA6 composites has been significantly improved. This investigation provides a practical strategy for using nanomaterials to modify CF surfaces to enhance interface adhesion and functional properties. Highlight A facile surface modification approach is developed for the in situ growth of low-cost, hydrophilic nano-CuS on carbon fibers. The interfacial bonding and thermal conduction properties of CFO–CuS 1:1 /PA6 composites are remarkably enhanced. Systematic investigation of nano-CuS morphology and structure effects on interfacial properties of CFRP composites.

A simple method to prepare an emulsifier was proposed to form a stable nano size emulsion as a sizing agent to enhance the interfacial bonding strength between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy resin. The toluene diisocyanate (TDI) grafting strategy can effectively introduce hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydrophobic poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) into the side chain of the epoxy resin without consuming epoxy groups. The PPG chain segment length was controlled to improve the stability of the emulsion. An emulsion prepared with EP–PEG6000–PPG2000 (EE-P20) as the emulsifier had the highest stability, and could be placed for more than 6 months without changes in the droplet size. The wettability of CF modified by this sizing agent was obviously improved, and the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF(EE-P20) were increased by 42.33% and 17.41%, respectively. It was worth noting that the moisture absorption of CF(EE-P20) was 3.12% at 90% relative humidity. The introduction of the PPG segment not only improved the storage stability of the emulsion, but also improved the moisture resistance of CF after sizing. This simple continuous grafting method provides a new idea for adjusting the structure of the epoxy sizing agent, and the obtained emulsifier has a wide application prospect in the field of the CF sizing agent.

This study improves weak interlaminar properties of carbon fiber-reinforced PMMA (CF/PMMA) laminates by incorporating calcium sulfate whisker (CSW)/PMMA interleaf films. Compared to direct whisker sprinkling, the film method enables uniform CSW dispersion and stabilization in the matrix. ILSS and IFSS tests revealed that 6 wt% CSW content optimized performance: ILSS reached 51.8 MPa (46.9% increase vs 35.3 MPa control) and IFSS achieved 40.2 MPa (83.1% increase vs 21.9 MPa control). Excessive CSW (>6 wt%) caused agglomeration, reducing ILSS and IFSS—particularly IFSS due to interfacial defects. Microscopic analysis demonstrated that CSW enhances interlaminar strength through crack deflection, pinning, matrix pull-out, and fracture mechanisms, while improving interfacial adhesion via mechanical anchoring with carbon fibers. The film-introduction strategy effectively enhances the interlaminar shear strength and overall quality stability of CFRP laminates, while establishing a research foundation for interfacial optimization in CSW-reinforced composites.

In this study, aluminum nitride (AlN) modified carbon fiber heating elements (HE) were used to connect carbon fiber reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone (CF/PEEK) composites by resistance welding. The effects of AlN content and environmental conditions on the lap shear strength (LSS) of resistance welding composites were investigated by preparing welded joints with different AlN content. The results show that the LSS of the welded joint increases rapidly with the increase of AlN content. When the content of AlN is 5 wt.%, the maximum strength reaches 30.63 MPa. The welded joints were then placed in room temperature (25°C, 50% relative humidity (RH)) and artificial aging chamber (85°C, 90%RH) for 28 days, respectively, and tested in the temperature range of −30°C to 145°C. It is found that with the increase of test temperature, the LSS under the two environmental conditions shows a decreasing trend. High temperature and moisture absorption will have a superimposed negative impact on the LSS of the welded joint. At 145°C, the strength of the sample under elevated temperature wet (ETW) environment is the lowest, which is 21.61 MPa. The SEM analysis of the fracture surface of the joint shows that the main failure mechanism of the joint is the cohesive failure of HE. The main reasons for the degradation of interface bonding properties are wet heat aging and high temperature environment.
