Traditional photoenzymatic systems for dye wastewater face critical bottlenecks, including radical-induced enzyme inactivation, inadequate light/oxygen exposure, and cumbersome catalyst recovery. Herein, a biomimetic floating catalyst (EP-CN-LC) was prepared using porous natural expanded perlite (EP) as the buoyant scaffold. Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) was anchored at the air-water interface, and laccase (LC) was immobilized in the subaqueous region via adsorption-covalent grafting. Successful spatial segregation endows CN with enhanced visible-light absorption (band gap = 2.63 eV), and the porous structure of EP protects LC from radical-induced inactivation. Under optimal conditions (13 mg LC loading, pH 4, 50°C), EP-CN-LC achieved 86.3% Rhodamine B degradation efficiency, 1.25 times higher than pure CN. Radical trapping experiments identified photogenerated holes (h⁺) and superoxide radicals (•O₂⁻) as the dominant active species, with the spatial design confining reactive species to the interfacial region. The catalyst exhibits excellent pH and temperature adaptability. After direct recovery, EP-CN-LC retains a high degradation efficiency of 80.5% over 5 consecutive cycles, demonstrating outstanding reusability. Its inherent floating property enables direct and facile separation during recycling, eliminating cumbersome operations and reducing application costs. This biomimetic design synergistically integrates efficient dye degradation, effective protection of LC from radical damage, and convenient recyclability, providing a green and practical technical solution for refractory dye wastewater treatment.

Precise atomic-scale interface engineering across the entire pH range remains a formidable challenge for photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Herein, hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) is introduced as a bifunctional surface modifier that spontaneously constructs Pd-N coordination bridges on g-C 3 N 4 . The interfacial Pd-N bonds collectively down-shift the N-p-band center away from the Fermi level, break intrinsic surface charge symmetry of C/N atoms, and fully expose the originally buried N active sites, thereby steering the hydrogen adsorption free energy (|ΔG H* |) toward thermoneutral. Simultaneously, the Pd-N bond confines Pd cluster growth to ∼5 nm, doubling specific surface area and enriching edge active sites that serve as primary proton reduction centers. Transient photoelectric voltage results reveal that the Pd-N electron transfer channel shortens the carrier transfer path and prolongs photoelectron lifetime, enabling quantitative electron delivery under acidic, neutral, and alkaline environments. As a result, the Pd-CN-HMT sample presents an efficient H 2 evolution rate across the entire pH window. This work advances the field by providing a versatile ligand-based strategy to precisely tailor the interfacial electronic structure via strong chemical bonding, offering a distinct and scalable solution for constructing high-performance pH-universal photocatalysts.

Accurate monitoring of ROS levels is essential for oxidative stress (OS) management, but their low concentration and instability pose significant detection challenges. Here, we developed a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical biosensor for real-time, micro-volume ROS detection in leukemia cells. The sensor was fabricated using ultrathin g-C₃N₄-rGO (CN-rGO) nanosheet synthesized through a calcination and hydrothermal approach. These nanosheets were deposited onto a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) and further modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to construct a CN-rGO@AgNPs/SPE biosensor. The porous nanostructure significantly enhanced the catalytic surface area and electron transfer efficiency, achieving high sensitivities towards H₂O₂ and O₂·⁻ detection. Using a window titration platform, the sensor detected ROS in 0.1 mL lysates of leukemia cell lines (U-937, THP-1, and MOLM-13) with concentrations of 7.38 ± 4.81 μM, 11.74 ± 0.985 μM, 19.84 ± 3.73 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the platform allowed precise monitoring of doxorubicin (DOX)-induced OS, providing valuable insights for guiding leukemia chemotherapy. Additionally, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation experiments demonstrated the sensor's exceptional real-time performance, enabling dynamic detection of H₂O₂ release kinetics and ROS generation rates at the cellular level. Combining high sensitivity, low detection limits, and micro-volume analysis capabilities, this sensor holds great potential for clinical auxiliary diagnosis and drug efficacy assessment in leukemia research.

It's a major challenge to explore highly active and stable electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). In this work, we report a new hybrid electrocatalyst: iron-cobalt decorated nitrogen doped carbon/reduced graphene oxide-700 °C (Fe-Co-CN/rGO-700). The catalyst shows an excellent electrocatalytic performance toward HER and OER in alkaline solution, which has lower overpotentials of 0.215 V and 0.308 V at the current density 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, and this catalyst has an outstanding durability (after 45 h). The excellent activity mainly benefit from the highly dispersed iron/cobalt species, sheet structure with high porosity, the improvement of electronic structures with nitrogen-doped carbon and high conductivity of rGO. Combined with the density function theory (DFT) calculations, the improvement of the HER and OER performance were also attributed to the balance of adsorption/desorption of the hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates, and the increased electronic states density near the Fermi level. The proposed work provides a novel and simple strategy to synthesize a porous carbon electrocatalyst material using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursor with high activity and strong stability for HER and OER.

Photoreforming of plastic waste is a novel approach, which can not only degrade plastic waste into valuable chemicals, but also produce high-energy-density hydrogen fuels. Here, we developed an in-situ derived carbon nitride-carbon nanotubes-NiMo hybrids via NiMo-assisted catalysis route, which works as an efficient and stable photocatalyst for plastics photoreforming. The strong π-π interaction between in-situ derived CNTs and CN promotes electron transfer, increases carrier lifetime and improves photocatalytic activity. The DFT calculations and single-particle PL quenching phenomenon confirmed the strong interface effect and charge transport for CN-CNTs-NM. In addition, the strong interaction between photocatalyst and ethylene glycol in plastics was observed in situ by single-particle PL. This work provides a smart strategy of utilizing in-situ derived π-π interaction as well as direct evidence of the charge transfer from the photocatalysts to ethylene glycol , which provides guidance for the rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts for plastics photoreforming.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment have received extensive attention in the past years. Here, a novel Mn, Ce co-modified g-C 3 N 4 (MnCe-CN) composite was successfully synthesized by one-step pyrolysis for activating PMS. The physical and chemical characterization of MnCe-CN/PMS was conducted, indicating that Mn and Ce were evenly distributed on g-C 3 N 4 and existed in the form of Mn-N structure and CeO 2 , respectively. The MnCe-CN/PMS system could effectively degrade pollutants such as acetaminophen (ACT), methylparaben (MeP), p -nitrophenol (PNP), and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Among them, 2,4-DCP could be rapidly degraded, reaching 100% within 30 min. The masking experiments and electrochemical testing results revealed that 2,4-DCP was degraded via superoxide radicals (O 2 ˙ˉ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and electron transfer path. The cyclic experiments and real water treatment experiments testified that the oxidative system had excellent stability and applicability. This study provides a facile synthetic method to fabricate bimetallic co-modified g-C 3 N 4 for the enhancement of PMS activation .

Enzymatic conversion of CO 2 to formate is a highly significant pathway for CO 2 utilization, but current level of conversion efficiency remains unsatisfactory due to low solubility of CO 2 under mild conditions. CO 2 -philic materials can significantly augment the reaction by raising local concentration of substrate. Herein, the intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x , nano-silica (SiO 2 ) and carbon nitride (CN) with abundant CO 2 adsorption sites were introduced to fabricate Ti 3 C 2 T x based nanocomposites, Ti 3 C 2 T x /SiO 2 /CN (TSCN), for the first time. As the controls, binary composites including Ti 3 C 2 T x /SiO 2 (TS), Ti 3 C 2 T x /CN (TCN) and SiO 2 /CN (SCN) were also studied. For each kind of material, the composition, structure, morphology, and application performance in the enzymatic CO 2 conversion were characterized and influencing factors were investigated. Among these composites, TSCN exhibited the best application performance and the enzyme reaction was accelerated up to 23.9 times that of the blank system. The value could reach as high as 35.3 after polyethyleneimine (PEI) modification. Following that, PEI modified composites were used as carrier of formate dehydrogenase (FDH) and apparent specific activity was up to 2.8 times that of free enzyme, which could retain 88.2% of the initial value after 10 cycles associated with the structural integrity. This work provides new impetus to CO 2 capture and conversion in a clean and mild way that shows bright application prospects.

In this paper, a fluorescent functionalized polyacrylamide material (P) was prepared by free radical precipitation polymerization based on a coumarin derivative (COMN) and acrylamide (AM). The chemical structure and composition of P were analyzed by 1H NMR, UV–vis, and FT-IR spectra. The results of fluorescence spectra of common cations illustrate that P can realize the sensitive detection of copper (Cu2+) within 30 s in the pure water system, and the fluorescence quenching rate is as high as 95.47%, the limit of detection is 7.2 nM. It is worth noting that the above system rapidly changed from green to orange within 0.5 s. In addition, the fluorescence spectra of common anions reveal that P/Cu2+ had a strong interaction with cyanide (CN–) (0–180 μM), and the limit of detection was 39.12 nM. The results of the cell imaging test show that P still manifests a good fluorescence response to Cu2+ and CN– in HeLa cells, which provides a new method for the detection of these ions in vivo.

Environmental pollution, particularly from printing and dyeing wastewater, has become an increasingly critical issue due to its persistence and resistance to conventional treatment methods. Photocatalytic technology, which efficiently harnesses solar energy, offers a promising solution by minimizing secondary pollution. Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ), a visible-light-responsive N-type semiconductor, has garnered attention due to its strong photocurrent signal and high photosensitivity. However, the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs limits its photocatalytic efficiency. To address this, we have enhanced the photocatalytic performance of WO 3 by forming a composite with carbon nitride (CN), creating a Z-type heterojunction (CN/WO 3 ). The Z-scheme heterojunction facilitates efficient charge carrier separation, which significantly improves the photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The optimized CN/WO 3 composites enable an apparent rate constant of 0.021 min −1 for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light irradiation, which is 7.8 and 10.5 times greater than that of CN (0.0027 min −1 ) and WO 3 (0.0020 min −1 ), respectively. The efficient charge separation and extended visible light absorption make CN/WO 3 composites a promising material for large-scale environmental remediation, offering a cost-effective and scalable approach to organic pollutant degradation.

Hollow carbon–nitrogen nanoreactors constitute a class of porous materials that have widespread application owing to their large inner cavities, low densities, core–shell interfaces, and enrichment effects. Direct carbonization of precursors is the simplest and most economical method to prepare porous carbon–nitrogen materials; however, this method requires high temperatures, thus yielding nonoxide structures. In this study, CuO–ZnO@CN (CN: carbon–nitrogen layers) is prepared using the two-step heating of zeolitic imidazolium skeleton-8 (ZIF-8) coated with CuO–ZnO precursors. During carbonization, the ZIF-8 nanoparticles are converted into carbon–nitrogen layers at high temperatures. Next, a heating process based on the autocatalytic effect of Cu can be used to etch the hollow structure prepared by the carbon–nitrogen layers. The CuO–ZnO@CN hollow composites fabricated using this method exhibit excellent catalytic properties for the ethynylation of formaldehyde. The proposed strategy can be used to develop techniques for syntheses of readily reducible carbon oxide claddings and their composites.

Developing precious-metal-free catalysts for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is critical yet challenging. Herein, a series of non-noble metal Co@CN-T catalysts were designed and fabricated, which can efficiently catalyze the selective hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF under mild reaction conditions of 140 °C, with the selectivity of the target product reaching as high as 99%. The Co-N x coordination active sites serve as Lewis acid sites, which can preferentially activate the C=O bond in HMF. Such selective activation promotes the effective hydrogenolysis of the intermediate 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) to 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol (MFA), reduces intermediate accumulation, and thus guarantees high selectivity toward DMF. In addition, the Co@CN-T catalysts also exhibited excellent stability, and their catalytic activity remained stable without obvious attenuation after five consecutive cycles of reaction. This study offers theoretical insights into the use of non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of renewable biomass to produce chemical feedstocks.

A CN-supported CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst was rationally developed to intensify peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for tetracycline degradation through interfacial electronic regulation. Beyond conventional structure-centered strategies, this study identifies directional electron donation from CN to CoFe 2 O 4 as the fundamental origin of catalytic enhancement, which accelerates the Co (III)/Co (II) and Fe (III)/Fe (II) redox cycles and thereby sustains PMS activation. Consequently, the composite delivers markedly superior catalytic reactivity, pronounced tolerance to ionic perturbation, and robust performance in complex aqueous matrices. Quenching and EPR analyses collectively reveal a nonradical-dominated oxidation regime, in which 1 O 2 serves as the principal reactive species, accompanied by minor contributions from O 2 • - , SO 4 • - , and •OH. XPS further corroborates the dynamic valence evolution of Co and Fe, validating an electron-transfer-assisted redox cycling mechanism. LC-MS and toxicity assessment demonstrate stepwise tetracycline transformation with an overall attenuation of mutagenic risk. These findings establish interfacial electron flow as a governing descriptor for PMS activation and provide a mechanistic framework for catalyst design at the electronic-structure level.
