A method for the rapid and simultaneous determination of carbendazim and thiabendazole residues by electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry (ESI-IMS) combined with a metal ion-assisted technique was developed and validated in different fruit matrices. The metal ion assisted strategy was performed instead of tedious pre-separation procedures to overcome the limitation of low resolution of IMS. Four transition metal cations, Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), were screened and their interactions with carbendazim and thiabendazole were investigated. The injection flow rate and metal ion concentration were optimized. The Cu(II) assisted approach helped to achieve well-separated peaks with a peak-to-peak resolution of 3.61. This method was then applied to detect carbendazim and thiabendazole simultaneously in apples, pears, bananas, and mangoes. The limit of detection (LOD) were 0.03 mg kg −1 and 0.13 mg kg −1 for carbendazim and thiabendazole, respectively, while spiked recoveries were 61.5–122.0% and 83.5–119.8%, respectively, with RSDs less than 13.9%. These satisfactory evaluation parameters indicated that the approach was capable of performing quantitative analysis of multi-pesticide residues. In addition, the feasibility of using metal ion assisted-ESI-IMS for the simultaneous detection also was theoretically demonstrated through molecular electrostatic potential analysis and binding energy calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Both experimental and theoretical results revealed the effectiveness of the metal ion assisted strategy in improving the resolution of ESI-IMS.

In this study, the new and efficient three-dimensional network porous aromatic frameworks materials called Silica-PAFs-a, Florisil-PAFs-a, Silica-PAFs-b, and Florisil-PAFs-b were first synthesized. The properties of materials were analyzed by five characterization methods. The materials were used as adsorbents in pipette-tip solid-phase extraction for the effective determination of carbendazim and thiabendazole in spinach sample. Meanwhile, the obtained materials were tested by static adsorption and dynamic adsorption. The result showed that the specific surface area of materials greatly increased after introducing three-dimensional network porous aromatic frameworks. Microstructural modification exposed a large number of amino reactive groups that made them have a better adsorption amount for the two targets. The calibration graphs of carbendazim and thiabendazole in methanol were linear over 0.10–300.0 µg/mL, and the limits of detection and quantification were 0.00546 and 0.0182 µg/mL, and 0.00741 and 0.0247µg/mL respectively. A reliable analytical method was developed for recognition targets in spinach sample by Silica-PAFs-b with satisfactory extraction recoveries (96.25 and 100.51%). The proposed method using the material was applied for trace analysis of the carbendazim and thiabendazole residue.

A new bifunctional intelligent nanosensing platform based on graphene-like titanium carbide MXene (Ti 2 C MXene)/Au–Ag nanoshuttles (NSs) for both electrochemical and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intelligent analysis of ultra-trace carbendazim (CBZ) residues in tea and rice coupled with machine learning (ML) was successfully designed. Ti 2 C MXene was synthesized by selectively etching Al layers of Ti 2 AlC with hydrofluoric acid and high-temperature calcination . Ti 2 C MXene/Au–Ag NSs prepared by the ultrasonic dispersion of graphene-like Ti 2 C MXene into Au–Ag NSs solution under dark conditions displayed large and rough surface, enhanced conductivity, excellent electrochemical response, prominent Raman enhancement, and high stability. The ML via different algorithms such as artificial neural network, support vector machine, and relevance vector machine (RVM) for the intelligent analysis of CBZ was contrasted and discussed. RVM displayed more superiority for the electrochemical analysis of CBZ in a wide linear range of 0.006 – 9.8 μM with low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.002 μM and SERS detection of CBZ in the wide linear range of 0.033 – 10 μM with low LOD of 0.01 μM. This will provide a new bifunctional intelligent sensing platform via different ML algorithms for improving accuracy of sensor via mutual verification of two or more methods of detection and a new bifunctional nanosensing platform based on the development of graphene-like nanohybrid for food and agro-products safety.

The influence of β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin (β-CD-EP) polymers on the improvement of the solubility and antifungal activity of carbendazim has been investigated. Meanwhile, the potential of the chitosan and β-CD-EP composite film used as a plant healthcare material for carbendazim-controlled release to protect rape againstSclerotinia sclerotiorum(Lib.) de Bary has been evaluated. β-CD-EP-1 and 2 (β-CD content, 750 mg/g and 440 mg/g, respectively) were found to significantly improve the solubility of the guest molecule carbendazim (17.9 and 18.5 times, respectively) and the 1:1 stoichiometry of the host-guest was confirmed by the Job’s plot. A slight synergism was observed for the β-CD-EP/carbendazim complex againstS. sclerotiorum(Lib.) de Bary, indicating an enhancement to the bioavailability of carbendazim. The in vitro release studies revealed that β-CD-EP polymers could efficiently modulate carbendazim release behaviors, such as the release retard and rate. The in vivo efficacy experiments demonstrated that the β-CD-EP/carbendazim and chitosan composite film could significantly prolong the effective duration of carbendazim at a concentration of 100 μg/mL compared with spraying carbendazim at 500 μg/mL. Thereby, a highly useful and strategic concept in plant disease control by a plant healthcare material—the chitosan and polymeric β-CD-EP composite film—is provided, which could also serve as a concept for related plant diseases.Keywords:β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin;chitosan film;antifungal activity;controlled release;Sclerotinia sclerotiorum(Lib.) de Bary

It is highly desirable to develop a low-cost and rapid detection method for trace levels of carbendazim fungicide residues, which would be beneficial for improving human health and mitigating environmental issues. Herein, isolated single tungsten atoms were implanted onto well-organized metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived N-doped carbons to form W-N-C single-site heterojunctions with ultrahigh electrocatalytic activity . The coupling of W-N-C with Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 , an electronically conductive MOF with a large surface area and porous structure, exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic performance for the oxidation of carbendazim (CBZ) when they were used for decorating graphene nanoplatelet flexible electrode arrays fabricated via template-assisted scalable filtration. A wide linear range (3.0 nM–50 μM) with an ultra-low detection limit of 0.97 nM and fast response was achieved for CBZ analysis. Moreover, the sensing platform has been utilised to monitor CBZ levels in vegetable samples with satisfactory recovery rates of 97.2–102% and a low relative standard deviation of 1.9%.
