Oxygen defect engineering at TMOx (TM = Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn)/TiO2 interfaces: A strategy for high-efficiency catalytic toluene degradation

Yaqi Wu,Jianhua Qian,Jinjuan Xing,Junhua Li,He Huang,Yanan Wang,Xueming Kang,Lijuan Wang,Jiasheng Xu

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as hazardous environmental pollutants emitted from chemical industries, cause significant threats to human health and ecological environment owing to their inherent toxicity and carcinogenicity. Catalytic oxidation has emerged as a promising technology for VOC elimination, enabling complete degradation of pollutants into CO 2 and H 2 O. This study investigates transition metal oxide (TMO x , TM = Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn)/TiO 2 catalysts for toluene degradation. Since the catalytic efficacy of TiO 2 -based catalysts critically depends on the quantity of surface oxygen vacancy (O v ) in heterogeneous processes, we engineered O v -rich interfaces by breaking atomic periodicity arrangements and generating unsaturated coordination sites. These structural modifications enhanced oxygen migration rates and increased reactive oxygen species availability. Among the synthesized catalysts, CuO/TiO 2 exhibited the highest performance, achieving 90 % toluene conversion (T 90 ) at 286 °C under a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 20,000 mL/(g·h) with an initial toluene concentration of 1000 ppm. The measurement of in-situ DRIFTS suggested that toluene oxidation process abided by the path of toluene → benzaldehyde → benzoic acid → anhydride →CO 2 and H 2 O. Furthermore, the by CuO/TiO 2 catalyst demonstrated great reusability, and long-term stability, highlighting its potential for industrial-scale VOC abatement applications.

Multi-scale study on bifunctional Co/Fe–N–C cathode catalyst layers with high active site density for the oxygen reduction reaction

Weikang Zhu,Yabiao Pei,John C. Douglin,Junfeng Zhang,Haoyang Zhao,Jiandang Xue,Qingfa Wang,Ran Li,Yanzhou Qin,Yan Yin,Dario R. Dekel,Michael D. Guiver

Recently, much work has been devoted to designing catalysts with high porosity and efficient active sites. Although very promising results are achieved using Co/Fe–N–C catalysts based on rotating disk electrode (RDE) tests, actual fuel cell performance is below expectations, probably due to insufficient understanding of the catalyst layer (CL). Therefore, catalyst design should be considered holistically by taking into account CL performance, not only intrinsic activity. Here, Co/Fe–N–C with highly dispersed CoFe nanoalloy in the carbon network is obtained by careful design of Co/Fe-ZIF precursor, resulting in a high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) site density with good stability. Concerning RDE test in the kinetic region and single cell test (SCT) with complex influence factors, the half-cell test (HCT) is introduced to more accurately evaluate the quality of the Co/Fe–CL. Multi-scale measurements (RDE, HCT and SCT) in different current density ranges allows targeting the key CL influence factors for fuel cell performance.

Constructing accelerated charge transfer channels along V-Co-Fe via introduction of V into CoFe-layered double hydroxides for overall water splitting

Junjun Lv,Panpan Liu,Rushuo Li,Linmeng Wang,Kaiyue Zhang,Peiyun Zhou,Xiubing Huang,Ge Wang

A series of self-supported electrocatalysts composed of tri-metallic CoFeV-LDHs generated on conductive carbon cloth (denoted as CoFeV@CC) have been constructed. The specific interaction among Co, Fe and V is systematically revealed via tuning the molar ratios of M 2+ :M 3+ and Fe 3+ :V 3+ in these tri-metallic LDHs. Finally, the optimal synergistic effect is reached when the molar ratios of M 2+ :M 3+ and Fe 3+ :V 3+ are respectively 4:1 and 1:1, resulting in the product named Co 8 FeV@CC, which displays the best overall OER and HER performance. Only rather low overpotentials of 235 and 182 mV are required to attain the current density of 100 mA cm −2 with a Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100 % for OER and HER, respectively. Co 8 FeV@CC can thus be applied as both an anode and cathode in the symmetrical two-electrode and possesses a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at the cell voltage of 1.65 V, and further demonstrates ultra-high stability for 100 h.

Co, Fe-ions intercalated Ni(OH)2 network-like nanosheet arrays as highly efficient non-noble catalyst for electro-oxidation of urea

Hui Wang,Lei Lu,Palaniappan Subramanian,Shan Ji,Palanisamy Kannan

Developing a highly active, low-cost, and durable nanostructured catalytic material is of significant interest in fuel cell applications owing to its efficient energy conversion, ease of preparation and operation, and reduced emission of pollutants. In this work, various ratio (0.01, 0.03, and 0.05 mmol) of cobalt (Co), and iron (Fe) doped nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 ) nanosheet arrays were grown on Ni foam surface (Co–Ni(OH) 2 and Fe–Ni(OH) 2 ) via a simple one-step process. The Co–Ni(OH) 2 and Fe–Ni(OH) 2 nanosheet array on Ni foam electrodes were explored as potential candidate towards electro-oxidation of urea. Notably, 0.03 mmol Co doped Ni(OH) 2 /Ni foam electrode displayed lowest-onset oxidation potential (0.21 V) and enhanced electro-oxidation of urea (59.7 mA) owing to its large amount of electrocatalytic active sites, densely assembled nanosheet array structures with porous surfaces, and electronic diffusion channels, which might promote interface electrochemical reaction . In addition, synergistic effect between Co metal with Ni(OH) 2 has also promotes enhanced electro-oxidation of urea in contrast to Fe–Ni(OH) 2 nanosheet array, Ni(OH) 2 , and Ni foam electrodes. Chronoamperometric i-t curve of Co–Ni(OH) 2 /Ni foam electrode obviously exhibited higher catalytic current, highly stable and durable properties in contrast to Fe–Ni(OH) 2 nanosheet arrays. As-fabricated Co–Ni(OH) 2 /Ni foam can be explored as a new type of potential low-cost catalyst for electro-oxidation of urea, which reveals promising use in future fuel cell energy applications .

Unveiling the Interface Structure of the Exsolved Co–Fe Alloy Nanoparticles from Double Perovskite and Its Application in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Zhihong Du,Yue Gong,Hailei Zhao,Yang Zhang,Sha Yi,Lin Gu

Exsolution of catalytic nanoparticles (NPs) from perovskites has arisen as a flexible method to develop high-performance functional materials with enhanced durability for energy conversion and catalytic synthesis applications. Here, we unravel the interface structure of the in situ exsolved alloy nanoparticles from the double perovskite substrate on the atomic scale. The results show that the Co–Fe alloy NPs exsolved topologically from the {100} facets terminations of the Sr2FeMo0.65Co0.35O6−δ (SFMC) double perovskite along ⟨100⟩ directions exhibiting the same orientation and identical crystal structure. The lattice planes of these two phases align and insert into each other at the interface, forming a smooth and continuous coherent connection. The presence of moiré patterns at the interface confirms the topological exsolution mechanism. The coherent interface can significantly reduce the interfacial energy and therefore stabilize the exsolved nanoparticles. Therefore, excellent and stable electrochemical performance of the NP-decorated SFMC perovskite is observed as the anode for solid oxide fuel cells. Our contribution promotes a fundamental understanding of the interface structure of the in situ exsolved alloy nanoparticles from perovskite substrate.

In Situ Exploring of the Origin of the Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction Efficiency of Metal(Co/Fe)–Organic Framework Catalysts Via Postprocessing

Jing Zhou,Yitian Hu,Yu-Chung Chang,Zhiwei Hu,Yu-Cheng Huang,YaLei Fan,Hong-Ji Lin,Chih-Wen Pao,Chung-Li Dong,Jyh-Fu Lee,Chien-Te Chen,Jian-Qiang Wang,Linjuan Zhang

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for electrochemical energy conversion technologies. The use of metal–organic framework (MOF) catalysts after postprocessing is an important method to optimize catalytic activity; however, little attention has been paid to the transformation of the electronic structure and coordinated ions under operando conditions. Here, we focus on a Prussian blue analogue (PBA) with the formula Na2Co2+[Fe2+(CN)6]·nH2O after postprocessing at a temperature of 400 °C. The catalysts exhibit a significant improvement in the OER activity with an overpotential of 254 mV against 320 mV for the initial PBA at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH. Our ex situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results demonstrate that some of the high-spin Co2+ and low-spin Fe2+ ions of PBA exhibit exchange with N and C ligands. Our fast operando hard XAS study revealed a dynamic evolution process of the transformation of ligands from N(C) in the initial Na2Co[Fe(CN)6]·nH2O to oxygen and the formation of pure low-spin Co3+ oxide and high-spin Fe3+ oxide after OER. The amorphous (Co,Fe)OOH chemical state was identified as the catalytically active state based on our operando X-ray spectroscopy results. The results of this study provide insights into a dynamic evolution process of MOFs after postprocessing and the formation of real active sites during electrocatalysis.

Co, Fe co-doped g-C3N4 composites as peroxymonosulfate activators under visible light irradiation for levofloxacin degradation: Characterization, performance and synergy mechanism

Pengyao Guo,Xiaomin Hu

To improve the degradation efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 (CN), transition metal elements (Fe and Co) were doped into CN. A novel Co, Fe co-doped CN (Co/Fe-CN) photocatalysts with small size and irregular flake structure were successfully prepared by thermal polymerization of melamine . Co/Fe-CN has a large specific surface area (55.76 m 2 /g), which provides more adsorption sites and reaction sites for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Good visible light response performance (474 nm) and suitable band gap (2.83 eV) ensure that it could be excited by visible light. The active species of • O 2 - , 1 O 2 , • OH and SO 4 •- could be stably produced in Co/Fe-CN/Vis/PMS system with appropriate redox potential . Meanwhile, Co and Fe elements doped in CN also could effectively activate PMS and promote the generation of active species. Besides, the continuous generation of photogenerated electrons promoted the cycling of Co 3+ /Co 2+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , and further enhanced the degradation efficiency of Co/Fe-CN/Vis/PMS towards Levofloxacin (LVFX). LVFX could be rapidly removed, reaching 92.1% within 50 min under visible light illumination, and the kinetic rate constant of LVFX was 0.0638 min -1 . The quenching experiments verified that the 1 O 2 was the main active species in the reaction process. The cycling experiments revealed that the Co/Fe-CN/Vis/PMS system had favorable stability and applicability. This work provides a simple preparation method to fabricate bimetallic co-doped CN for the enhancement of degradation rate in the Photocatalyst/Vis/PMS system.

Hierarchical porous tri-metallic NiCoFe-Se/CFP derived from Ni-Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Yajie Guo,Kelun Jia,Fei Dai,Yongjie Liu,Chunrui Zhang,Jibo Su,Ke Wang

The progress of inexpensive, high-efficiency, and steady oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great importance to promoting water splitting for green hydrogen production. Herein, tri-metallic NiCoFe selenide catalyst backed up by carbon fiber paper (CFP) was synthesized by a facile selenization of NiCoFe Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) for OER in alkaline solutions. The NiCoFe-Se/CFP inherited the porous nanostructure of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) precursors prepared by rapid cyclic voltammetry electrodeposition. Benefiting from the 3D hierarchical porous structure, optimized electronic structure of NiCoFe selenides and high conductivity, the synthesized electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding catalytic activity to the corresponding mono-metallic or bi-metallic selenides. Specifically, the NiCoFe-Se/CFP electrode demands an overpotential of 221 mV to attain the 10 mA cm −2 current density in 1.0 M KOH solution and a low Tafel slope of 38.6 mV dec -1 . The prepared catalyst also displays good stability and durability. These findings prove a feasible strategy to further improve the catalytic activities of non-precious metal based OER electrocatalysts by the cooperation of structure design and chemical component modification.

Bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulating M(Co, Fe)-Ni alloy for electrochemical production of syngas with potential-independent CO/H2 ratios

Bo Jinxiao,Li Mei,Zhu Xinli,Ge Qingfeng,Han Jinyu,Wang Hua

The electrochemical conversion of CO 2 -H 2 O into CO-H 2 using renewable energy is a promising technique for clean syngas production. Low-cost electrocatalysts to produce tunable syngas with a potential-independent CO/H 2 ratio are highly desired. Herein, a series of N -doped carbon nanotubes encapsulating binary alloy nanoparticles (M x Ni-NCNT, M= Fe, Co) were successfully fabricated through the co-pyrolysis of mela-mine and metal precursors. The M x Ni-NCNT samples exhibited bamboo-like nanotubular structures with a large specific surface area and high degree of graphitization. Their electrocatalytic performance for syngas production can be tuned by changing the alloy compositions and modifying the electronic structure of the carbon nanotube through the encapsulated metal nanoparticles. Consequently, syngas with a wide range of CO/H 2 ratios, from 0.5:1 to 3.4:1, can be produced on M x Ni-NCNT. More importantly, stable CO/H 2 ratios of 2:1 and 1.5:1, corresponding to the ratio to produce biofuels by syngas fermentation, could be realized on Co 1 Ni-NCNT and Co 2 Ni-NCNT, respectively, over a potential window of −0.8 to −1.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Our work provides an approach to develop low-cost and potential-independent electrocatalysts to effectively produce syngas with an adjustable CO/H 2 ratio from electrochemical CO 2 reduction.

Inhibit effect of Pr,Ce,La or Yb doping on microwave-assisted pyrolysis of waste plastics for by-production oil over Co-Fe catalysts

Bin Zhang,Ya’nan Li,Shuai Lu,Jonathan Richard Ishengoma,Song Wang,Jie Liu,Tao Tang,Sanxi Li

Plastic waste causes serious pollution to the environment. Being not satisfied with simply disposing of them into environment, people want to efficiently convert it into high-value products, such as H 2 and carbon nanotubes . A trimetallic catalyst is provided herein, which adds Pr, Ce, La or Yb to a Co-Fe bimetallic catalyst to inhibit the formation of oil by-product in a plastic pyrolysis reaction. In this work, various plastics, including plastics with different functional groups and real plastic waste were used for pyrolysis with elemental hydrogen efficiencies above 95% in the gas product. For pyrolysis of EVA, the gaseous hydrogen efficiency reached 96.07%, and for pyrolysis of LLDPE , the gaseous hydrogen efficiency reached 95.56%, over Pr 1 Co 1 Fe 8 O x catalyst. The role of Pr in catalytic reactions is discussed in general and the formation of carbon nanotubes of various types of structures is simulated. Catalyst cycling experiments demonstrate that the catalyst still maintains a gas hydrogen efficiency of more than 70% after being used four times. In conclusion, the Pr 1 Co 1 Fe 8 O x catalyst proved to be the best choice for microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of plastics to H 2 , and this work provides a new perspect for the study of plastic pyrolysis.

Hierarchical assembly of Cu2+-polydopamine and phytic acid functionalized GO with Co-Fe/B nanosheets for improving the fire retardancy of waterborne epoxy coatings

Rutong Song,Yurong Wu,Fei Zhong,Chunlin Chen,Zhikui Huang,Yaqi Ren,Wei Li,Jie Cao,Yichao Ding

Cu-doped PDA and PA were grafted onto GO to form a P-N-rich barrier (GPCu/PA). • Co-Fe/B nanosheets were grown on GPCu/PA to construct a hierarchical structure. • Multi-metal (Cu, Co, Fe) and boron synergistically enhance char formation and stability. • The hierarchical filler provides physical barrier, radical quenching, and catalytic charring. Water-based intumescent epoxy coatings for steel structures face challenges in simultaneously achieving high-efficiency flame retardancy, smoke suppression, thermal insulation, and long-term environmental durability. In this study, a hierarchical GPCu/PA/Co-Fe/B hybrid flame retardant was developed by sequentially grafting Cu 2+ -chelated polydopamine (PDA) and phytic acid (PA) onto graphene oxide (GO), followed by the in situ growth of Co-Fe/B nanosheets. This ingeniously designed structure integrates the layered barrier effect of GO, the catalytic charring capability of PDA and transition metal species, the phosphorus-promoted expansion effect of PA, and the protective effect of boron-containing compounds. Through these synergistic effects, the hybrid system facilitates the formation of a dense and stable char layer, thereby effectively suppressing heat conduction, oxygen diffusion, and the release of flammable volatiles during combustion. When incorporated into water-based epoxy coatings, just 2 wt% of GPCu/PA/Co-Fe/B significantly improves flame-retardant performance by reducing the back-surface temperature by 36.3%, increasing the char layer expansion height by 244.9%, and enhancing smoke suppression capabilities. The cone calorimeter test further confirmed the reduced heat release, smoke generation, and toxic gas emissions achieved by this coating, demonstrating its outstanding fire safety performance. Additionally, water immersion and UV-accelerated aging tests showed that even after environmental exposure, the coating maintained low water absorption, structural integrity, and flame-retardant properties, indicating excellent durability and weather resistance. This study provides a highly promising strategy for developing multifunctional, tiered flame-retardant systems for durable water-based intumescent coatings designed for fire protection of steel structures. An efficient and durable non-precious metal catalyst based on Co/Fe/CoFe-CNAs@NHCNFs for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis in flexible Zn-Air batteries

Yunong Qin,Guoliang Lai,Ye Guo,Ling Li,Wenming Zhang

Co/Fe/CoFe-CNAs@NHCNFs has been synthesised through a template-free approach that exploits the synergistic effect of Co, Fe, and N-doped hollow carbon nanofibres. This resulting Co/Fe/CoFe-CNAs@NHCNFs catalysts display enhanced electrical conductivity and an expanded active surface area. The Co/Fe/CoFe-CNAs@NHCNFs catalyst exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic performance and achieves an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) an overpotential of only 1.55 V (10 mA cm −2 ), which shows excellent electrochemical properties. It is evident that the collaborative reaction among Co, Fe, and N refines the electronic configuration, thereby increasing the efficiency of electron transfer and strengthening the catalytic activity. The incorporation of N-doping enriches the catalyst with an augmented array of catalytic centers., which are highly effective for facilitating the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and OER, consequently lowering an activation energy required for these reactions. Its electrochemical performance is more remarkable than conventional Pt/C. The liquid zn-air battery based on Co/Fe/CoFe-CNAs@NHCNFs exhibites an open-circuit voltage reaching 1.396 V, the peak power density achieved was 253 mW cm −2 . Under a constant current discharge condition of 10 mA cm −2 , the battery exhibited over 60 hours of good cycling stability with no significant performance degradation. The solid-state rechargeable Zn-air batteries (RZABs) based on Co/Fe/CoFe-CNAs@NHCNFs catalyst demonstrate exceptional energy storage capacity and stability, exhibiting promising potential for practical applications
