Sb-doping has been demonstrated to be a new approach to promote Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) thin film formation . To study the mechanism of Sb-promoted CIGS formation, we investigated the influence of Sb on the evolution of the critical intermediate Cu–Se phases, and found that Cu 3 SbSe 3 species was formed. Phase change of the as-prepared Cu–Se compounds at elevated temperature was determined using the differential scanning calorimetry analysis. For samples containing Sb, the melting decomposition occurred at 507.1 °C, along with aggregation of nanocrystals into a bulk, while the morphology of the sample without Sb barely changed after heating. This result suggests that the mobile Cu 3 SbSe 3 is likely the key intermediate responsible for Sb-promoted CIGS formation. Furthermore, we extended the scope of Sb-doping approach to solvothermal synthesis and CIGS nanocrystals were synthesized with significantly promoted kinetics in the presence of Sb. Based on these results, we propose the mechanism of Sb promoted CIGS formation.

ZnO plate, dominantly exposed polar high energy (0 0 0 1) plane, was used to load Cu to build Cu/ZnO plate model catalyst. The catalyst was reduced in different atmospheres and then evaluated for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, quasi in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, in situ UV-Raman, and CO 2 temperature programmed desorption characterizations have been carried out. The exploration results indicate that in situ tuning Cu nanoparticle (NP) morphology can be realized through varying reducing atmospheres. H 2 reduction induced the formation of small irregular spherical Cu NPs covered with large amount of migrated Zn, prompting CO 2 conversion and methanol synthesis . However, CO reduction induced the generation of ellipsoidal Cu NPs with medium size and low amount of migrated Zn, leading to poor catalytic performance for CO 2 hydrogenation. CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol displays apparent Cu NP morphology dependency over the Cu-ZnO based catalysts.

Ethanol dehydrogenation is a vital elementary step in ethanol upgrading, for which Cu-based alloy catalysts are the most promising candidates. Nevertheless, elucidating the underlying reasons for the synergistic effect between alloying components and host metals remains challenging due to the intrinsic structural complexity and dynamic evolution of alloy catalysts under operational conditions. Herein, single-atom Pd modified Cu-MFI catalysts with well-defined structures were designed for ethanol dehydrogenation to acetaldehyde and hydrogen. Comprehensive characterizations using aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Pd atoms are isolated by surrounding Cu atoms with a coordination number of 9–10, forming −0.36 e charged single-atom sites and being uniformly dispersed on the surface of Cu catalysts. The newly generated Pd δ − and Cu δ + sites synergistically reduced the activation energy barrier for C–H bond cleavage in ethanol. These sites simultaneously enhanced hydrogen adsorption and H–H bond coupling, leading to improved ethanol conversion and acetaldehyde productivity over Pt/Cu-MFI catalysts.

Abstract CO is toxic and detrimental to human beings and the atmosphere. The presence of CO has become one of the important indicators for evaluating ambient air quality. Iron and steel sintering generate large amounts of flue gas emissions containing approximately 1% CO, which has become an important factor restricting the improvement of air quality in steel cities. The catalytic oxidation method is the simplest and most effective method for CO emission control. In this work, a series of Cu x Ce y /TiO 2 catalysts with different Ce doping levels were prepared by a one-step impregnation method and subsequently tested for catalytic CO oxidation. The Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 sample has the best catalytic activity under the conditions of 1% CO and 10% H 2 O. The catalysts were next characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, H 2 -TPR, XPS and in-situ DRIFTS methods. The characterization results show that Ce doping promotes the dispersion of copper species on the catalyst surface and improve the redox performance of the catalyst. The results of in-situ experiments showed that both Cu/TiO 2 and Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 catalysts followed Mars and van Krevelen mechanism, and Ce doping enhanced the adsorption and activation of oxygen, thus improving the low-temperature reaction activity of the catalysts. Copper in drinking water causes a significant environmental problem. Composite material based on alginate hydrogel has been gaining attention in the field of Cu(II) adsorption. However, alginate-based hydrogel exhibits poor mechanical property and relative low adsorption capacity which limit their application. The present study is devoted to the modification of chitosan/calcium alginate/Fe 3 O 4 (CAF) hydrogel microsphere by NaOH solution for enhancement of Cu(II) adsorption. Results reveal that modification of CAF via NaOH solution significantly improves the mechanical strength and Cu 2+ adsorption capacity of pristine materials. FTIR and XRD analysis confirms that CAF and newly prepared materials (NACAF) are successfully prepared. SEM and EDX are employed to analyze the surface morphology and elemental composition, respectively, both before and after their loading with Cu 2+ . XPS study demonstrates adsorption mechanism is based on chelation and ion-exchange. Compressive stress-strain curves demonstrate NACAF has better mechanical performance than CAF. The adsorption kinetics of the two adsorbents follow a pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium data were best described by Langmuir isotherm model, and the estimated maximum equilibrium sorption capacity, q
m ,is 261.31 mg/g for the NACAF, which is larger than that of CAF (145.39 mg/g). Hence, NACAF shows excellent mechanical strength and high sorption capacity for Cu 2+ . It has great potential for Cu(II) removal in aqueous solutions.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is a promising approach for reducing CO 2 emissions and achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. In this work, selectively coupling Cu(OH) 2 and CuO with amine-modified brookite TiO 2 (NH 2 –B–TiO 2 ) has been achieved by a simple precipitation method. The results show that CuO is better than Cu(OH) 2 as a co-catalyst to enhance the CO 2 photoreduction capability of NH 2 –B–TiO 2 . The highest rates of CO 2 conversion to CH 4 and CO of NH 2 –B–TiO 2 –CuO composite reach 6.05 and 3.25 μmol h −1 g −1 , respectively, which is higher than 8 times the yield of CH 4 of NH 2 –B–TiO 2 . It is proposed that the NH 2 –B–TiO 2 –CuO composite offers an effective charge transfer through the formation of a p–n junction between NH 2 –B–TiO 2 and CuO interfaces, while in the NH 2 –B–TiO 2 –Cu(OH) 2 composite, the Cu(OH) 2 dominantly serves as an electron sink to capture photo-induced electrons, promoting photo-induced carrier separation. This work provides an ingenious synthetic method for selectively anchoring Cu(OH) 2 and CuO on semiconductors with different charge transfer routes for an efficient CO 2 photoreduction. Structural design of semiconductor photocatalysts plays an important role in promoting light absorption, molecular activation, and charge separation in the CO 2 reduction reaction, which is beneficial for improving photocatalytic activity. In this paper, a simple photodeposition strategy was employed to load Cu onto Bi 2 O 2 SO 4 and form a Cu-Bi alloy. Under simulated sunlight conditions, the optimal catalyst demonstrates impressive photocatalytic activity and selectivity for CO 2 reduction, with a corresponding yield of 18.8 μmol g -1 h -1 , 15 times higher than that of pure Bi 2 O 2 SO 4 , and CO selectivity reaching 97.1%. The results indicate that metal deposition enhances light absorption utilization efficiency and promotes the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. Additionally, the combination of in-situ FT-IR spectra and theoretical calculations reveal the molecular mechanisms of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. This work discusses the synergistic effect of metal deposition and oxygen vacancies on photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 , providing a feasible method for constructing metal deposition structures with defects.

The zeolite-based catalyst is a promising option for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) due to its low toxicity. However, the challenge lies in its low-temperature activity. This study developed a multi-component catalytic system consisting of Ce/Mn/Cu-loaded Beta zeolite to reduce NO x . With fixed contents of Cu and Mn, we investigated the NH 3 -SCR process and the mechanism of action of the rare-earth species (i.e., Ce) in the system. Upon optimization of the content of Ce, the Ce/Mn/Cu-loaded Beta zeolite demonstrated enhanced low-temperature activity compared to samples loaded with Cu or Cu/Mn in the temperature range of 150–250 °C. When Ce was loaded in an appropriate proportion, it regulated the oxidation state of Cu, optimizing active adsorption species for NO and strengthening the strength of Brønsted acid sites in the catalyst. These synergetic effects led to improved NH 3 -SCR catalytic performance. This study can contribute to a better understanding of multiple metal-loaded zeolites in the NH 3 -SCR process and inform future design of Beta-type catalysts.

Presently, realizing high ethanol selectivity in CO2 electroreduction remains challenging due to difficult C–C coupling and fierce product competition. In this work, we report an innovative approach for improving the efficiency of Cu-based electrocatalysts in ethanol generation from electrocatalytic CO2 reduction using a crystal plane modification strategy. These novel Cu-based electrocatalysts were fabricated by electrochemically activating three-dimensional (3D) flower-like CuO micro/nanostructures grown in situ on copper foils and modifying with surfactants. It was demonstrated that the fabricated Cu-based electrocatalyst featured a predominantly exposed Cu(100) surface loaded with high-density Cu nanoparticles (NPs). The optimal Cu-based electrocatalyst displayed considerably improved CO2 electroreduction performance, with a Faraday efficiency of 37.9% for ethanol and a maximum Faraday efficiency of 68.0% for C2+ products at −1.4 V vs RHE in an H-cell, accompanied by a high current density of 69.9 mA·cm–2, much better than the particulate Cu-based electrocatalyst. It was unveiled that the Cu(100)-rich surface of nanoscale petals with abundant under-coordinated copper atoms from CuNPs was conducive to the formation and stabilization of key *CH3CHO and *OC2H5 intermediates, thereby promoting ethanol generation. This study highlighted the critical role of CuNP-loaded Cu(100) surface structures on structured Cu-based electrocatalysts in enhancing ethanol production for the CO2 electroreduction process.

Low-cost and high-abundance Cu nanostructures are potential near-infrared (NIR) surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) photosensitizers for carbon nitride (C3N4) photocatalysts, but their low activity and stability need to be improved. In this article, doping S into C3N4 (S-C3N4) creates anchoring sites for photo-deposited Cu nanoparticles (NPs), and the spontaneous construction of S-Cu bonds is realized between S-C3N4 and Cu NPs. The optimal hydrogen evolution rate of 1.64 mmol g−1 h−1 is obtained for S-C3N4–Cu, which is 5.5, 4.6 and 1.7 times that of pure C3N4, S-C3N4 and S-C3N4–Cu, respectively. With further loading of a Pt co-catalyst to confirm the role of Cu NPs and improve the photocatalytic activity of the SCN–Cu, the photocatalytic rate can reach up to 14.34 mmol g−1 h−1. Due to the NIR SPR effect of Cu NPs, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of S-C3N4–Cu at 600 and 765 nm is 2.02% and 0.47%, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of S-C3N4–Cu compared with C3N4–Cu is mainly due to the introduced S–Cu bonds that improve the injection rate of hot electrons. This solution provides a simple and efficient interface optimization strategy for the construction of efficient NIR-driven photocatalysts.

Cu-based catalysts leveraging Cu+/Cu0 active sites have emerged as pivotal for synthesizing essential hydrocarbons and alcohols in electrochemical CO2 reduction, such as ethylene and ethanol (C2 products). However, the dynamic reduction of Cu+ to Cu0 during electroreduction leads to site instability, resulting in diminished efficiency for CO2 conversion to C2 products. Herein, we introduced Si into CuO by the selective dissolution method, engendering Cu–O–Si units to stabilize the Cu+/Cu0 sites. The catalyst manifested good activity in CO2 electroreduction with an elevated Faradaic efficiency for C2 products reaching 81.9% at −100 mA/cm2. After ten cycles of electrochemical testing, the Cu+/Cu0 sites and performance exhibited no signs of degradation. The Si incorporation significantly improved the hybridization of O 2p and Cu 3d orbitals, thereby reinforcing the Cu–O bonds and stabilizing the Cu+/Cu0 sites, which was critical in promoting C–C coupling via decreasing the energy barriers for *OCCO formation and enhancing C2 product selection. The active Cu+ cations with unsaturated coordination contributed to the reaction stabilization, thereby improving the preservation of Cu2O metastable state.

Cu-Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with amine modification were prepared by an organic combination of an anionic surfactant-mediated method and an ultrasonic spalling method usingN-aminoethyl-γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a grafting agent. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA, and XPS. The effects of the Cu2+content on the surface morphology and the CO2adsorption of Cu-Mg-Al LDHs were investigated, and the kinetics of the CO2adsorption and the photocatalytic reduction of CO2were further analyzed. The results indicated that the amine-modified method and appropriate Cu2+contents can improve the surface morphology, the increase amine loading and the free-amino functional groups of the materials, which were beneficial to CO2capture and adsorption. The CO2adsorption capacity of Cu-Mg-Al N was 1.82 mmol·g−1at 30 °C and a 0.1 MPa pure CO2atmosphere. The kinetic model confirmed that CO2adsorption was governed by both the physical and chemical adsorption, which could be enhanced with the increase of the Cu2+content. The chemical adsorption was suppressed, when the Cu2+content was too high. Cu-Mg-Al N can photocatalytically reduce CO2to methanol with Cu2+as an active site, which can significantly improve the CO2adsorption and photocatalytic conversion.
