The degradation of antibiotics remains a major and persistent challenge in wastewater treatment. This study reports the synthesis of three distinct catalysts from a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) precursor through pyrolysis at 800 °C, namely ZIF-67(Fe)-800, ZIF-67(Co)-800, and ZIF-67(FeCo)-800. Comprehensive characterization (e.g., X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopy analyses) confirmed their graphitic carbon matrix, specific metallic phases, and unique polyhedral morphologies. These catalysts were employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. Strikingly divergent catalytic performances were observed, with CIP degradation rate constants of 0.0027, 0.0731, and 0.0504 min –1 for ZIF-67(Fe)-800, ZIF-67(Co)-800, and ZIF-67(FeCo)-800, respectively. Furthermore, the bimetallic ZIF-67(FeCo)-800 demonstrated consistently inferior performance in activating both peroxydisulfate and sodium percarbonate compared to PMS, resulting in significantly lower CIP degradation rates of 52% and 87%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations using electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests revealed that hydroxyl radical ( · OH), sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the dominant reactive species in both the ZIF-67(Fe)-800/PMS and ZIF-67(Co)-800/PMS systems. In contrast, the ZIF-67(FeCo)-800/PMS system operated via a distinct pathway, primarily generating SO 4 •− , accompanied by · OH, 1 O 2 , and superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ). Notably, H 2 PO 4 − and HCO 3 − exhibited strong inhibitory effects on CIP degradation, while SO 4 2− and CH 3 COO − led to modest rate enhancements. Overall, this work provides a rational framework for designing MOF-derived catalysts and highlights their potential for application in advanced oxidation processes aimed at removing pharmaceutical pollutants.

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) represent a frontier in heterogeneous electrocatalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, the dynamic evolution of active-site structure complicates mechanistic understanding. Herein, alloyed Fe-Co DACs with strong Fe-Co bonds are synthesized via molecular chelation and ionic coupling strategies. In-situ spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculation reveals the Janus effect of Fe-Co dual-atom sites: Co serves as the primary catalytic center for the 4e - process with Fe as the cooperative sites to absorb the *OH. This division-of-labor mechanism lowers the theoretical overpotential from 1.14 V to 0.43 V for acidic oxygen reduction reaction. Thus, the catalyst achieves a 0.852 V half-wave potential and 1.14 W cm −2 power density (2.0 bar H₂-O₂), sustaining 81% peak power after 10,000 cycles. These findings clarify DAC configuration-mechanism relationships, guiding the design of high-performance DACs.

Sunset Yellow (SY), a widely utilized synthetic food colorant, poses potential health risks upon excessive consumption. This work reports an ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for the quantification of SY in commercial beverages. A spherical hierarchical porous carbon composite embedded with FeCo alloy nanoparticles (FeCo@HPC) was synthesized via sequential hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirm that FeCo bimetallic synergy enhances interfacial electron transfer kinetics, while the hierarchical porous architecture and nitrogen-doped defect sites cooperatively facilitate SY adsorption and electrocatalytic conversion. The sensor demonstrates a linear response across 0.005–6 μM SY, achieving a detection limit of 2.1 nM (S/N = 3) and sensitivity of 23.6 μA·μM −1 . Validation via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) yielded recovery rates of 97.2–103.5 % in spiked beverage matrices. This study establishes a cost-effective analytical platform for food additive surveillance while elucidating design principles for bimetallic carbon-based electrocatalysts.

CO 2 hydrogenation to value-added light olefins (C 2–4 = ) is crucial for the utilization and cycling of global carbon resource. Moderate CO 2 activation and carbon chain growth ability are key factors for iron-based catalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion to target C 2–4 = products. The electronic interaction and confinement effect of electron-deficient graphene inner surface on the active phase are effective to improve surface chemical properties and enhance the catalytic performance. Here, we report a core-shell FeCo alloy catalyst with graphene layers confinement prepared by a simple sol-gel method. The electron transfer from Fe species to curved graphene inner surface modifies the surface electronic structure of the active phase χ-(Fe x Co 1– x ) 5 C 2 and improves CO 2 adsorption capacity, enhancing the efficient conversion of CO 2 and moderate C-C coupling. Therefore, the catalyst FeCoK@C exhibits C 2–4 = selectivity of 33.0% while maintaining high CO 2 conversion of 52.0%. The high stability without obvious deactivation for over 100 h and unprecedented C 2–4 = space time yield (STY) up to 52.9 mmol CO2 ·g –1 ·h –1 demonstrate its potential for practical application. This work provides an efficient strategy for the development of high-performance CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts.

The efficient electrocatalytic nitrate (NO 3 − ) reduction to ammonia (NRA) offers a sustainable alternative for both environmental remediation and ammonia synthesis. Developing advanced electrocatalysts with rationally designed spatial arrangement of active sites and optimizing the synergetic effect among components are crucial for high efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we present Fe/N active sites decorated on porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles (FeCo@CNFs-Fe/N) as electrocatalysts for NRA. The FeCo@CNFs-Fe/N catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a high ammonia yield of 498.18 μmol/(h g cat ). Meanwhile, the enhanced reduction activity, especially the reduction in overpotential by 0.565 V, is 3-10 times higher than that of FeCo-encapsulated and Fe/N-modified CNFs-based catalysts. The enhanced catalytic activity is attributed to the efficient structure design and optimized spatial distribution of active sites, which enhance the electron transfer rate and decrease the reaction energy barrier. Mechanistic studies reveal that the synergetic effect between encapsulated nanoparticles and surface-modified Fe/N sites plays a crucial role in promoting efficient nitrate adsorption and selective ammonia production. These findings highlight the potential of strategically engineered CNF-based composites for nitrate reduction and other advanced electrocatalytic applications.

Exploring the cooperative amplification of peroxidase-like metal nanocomposites and cycled hairpin assembly is intriguing for sensitive bioanalysis. Herein, we report the first design of a unique electrochemical biosensor based on mimicking Au@FeCo nanozymes and bicycled hairpin assembly (BHA) for synergistic signal amplification. By loading the enzyme-like FeCo alloy in Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), the as-synthesized Au@FeCo hybrids display great improvement of electronic conductivity and active surface area and excellent mimic catalase activity to H2O2 decomposition into •OH radicals. The immobilization of Au@FeCo in an electrode sensing interface is stabilized via the resulting electrodeposition in HAuCl4 while efficiently accelerating the electron transfer of electroactive ferrocene (Fc). Upon the immobilization of a helping hairpin (HH) via Au–S bonds, a specific DNA trigger (T*) is introduced to activate BHA operation through competitive strand displacement reactions among recognizing hairpin (RH), signaling hairpin (SH), and HH. T* and RH are rationally released to catalyze two cycles, in which the transient depletion of dsDNA intermediates rapidly drives the progressive hairpin assemblies to output more products SH·HH. Thus, the efficient amplification of Au@FeCo mimic catalase activity combined with BHA leads to a significantly increased current signal of Fc dependent on miRNA-21 analogous to T*, thereby directing the creation of a highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor having applicable potential in actual samples.

The development of highly efficient and stable oxygen reduction electrocatalysts and revealing their underlying catalytic mechanism are crucial in expanding the applications of metal-air batteries. Herein, an excellent FeCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated N-doped mesoporous carbon electrocatalyst (FeCo/NC) for oxygen reduction reaction, prepared through the pyrolysis of a dual metal containing metal-organic framework composite scaffold is reported. Benefiting from the highly exposed bimetal active sites and the carefully designed structure, the Fe 0.25 Co 0.75 /NC-800 catalyst exhibits a promising electrocatalytic activity and a superior durability, better than those of the state-of-the-art catalysts. Suggested by both the X-ray absorption fine structures and the density functional theoretical calculation, the outstanding catalytic performance is originated from the synergistic effects of the bimetallic loading in NC catalysts, where the electronic modulation of the Co active sites from the nearby Fe species leads to an optimized binding strength for reaction intermediates. This work demonstrates a class of highly active nonprecious metals electrocatalysts and provides valuable insights into investigating the structure–performance relationship of transition metal-based alloy catalysts.

The development of low-cost, high catalytic activity oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is the key to promoting the development of zinc-air batteries. In this paper, a simple one-step pyrolysis method was used to successfully synthesize a binary FeCo–Co/NC catalyst with FeCo and Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes. This structure exhibits great characteristics: it has a variety of active species (FeCo, Co, NC), and there is close combination between these active species (FeCo, Co, NC). Electrochemical studies have shown that the initial potential of FeCo–Co/NC during ORR process is 0.93 V, the half-wave potential is 0.808 V, and the limiting current density is 4.94 mA cm−2. In the OER process, at an anode current density of 10 mA cm−2, an overpotential of only 353 mV is shown; a lower Tafel slope and good durability are also observed. Moreover, the zinc-air battery in preparation can be cycled for as long as 2000 times. This provides a new method for the preparation of high-efficiency dual-function electrocatalysts for OER and ORR.

Recently, low-cost biomass based carbon aerogels have turned out to be promising efficient electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials, but the bad impedance matching and single loss mechanism often result in poor EMW absorption properties. In this study, magnetic FeCo alloy nanoparticle decorated cellulose-based carbon aerogel (FeCo@CCA) was prepared by calcining the cellulose aerogel with homogeneously dispersed CoFe2O4 particles (CoFe2O4@CA), which was the freeze-dried product of hydrothermal treated Fe2+/Co2+ metal ion absorbed cellulose hydrogel. Here, the hydrothermal synthesis method can effectively ensure the even dispersion of the calcination product of magnetic FeCo alloy nanoparticles, which is conducive to good impedance matching, additional magnetic loss, and improved dielectric loss. Besides, the porous structure of the aerogel can also result in multi-reflection/scattering to attenuate more the incident EMW. As a result, the EMW absorption properties of the prepared FeCo@CCA can be effectively tuned by changing the metal ion concentration, and the product arising from a metal ion concentration of 100 mmol L−1 (FeCo@CCA-100) displays the strongest EWM absorption capacity with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −49.5 dB at a thickness of 4.05 mm at 9.84 GHz and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax, RL < −10 dB) of 10.88 GHz (6.96–17.84 GHz), covering the whole Ku and X band and almost half of the C band. This study provides a guideline for developing efficient cellulose-based carbon aerogel based EMW absorbers.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a core half-reaction in clean energy technologies like water splitting, and the development of high-efficiency OER catalysts is critical for overcoming the energy conversion efficiency bottleneck. The development of efficient OER catalysts based on metal-embedded porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is often hampered by complex synthesis procedures. This study presents a phosphoric acid-mediated synthesis strategy for fabricating FeCo bimetallic nanoalloys anchored on nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (FeCo@N-PCNFs). By integrating phosphoric acid with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a stabilized carbon framework is formed, enabling homogeneous dispersion of FeCo nanoparticles. Hierarchical porosity is simultaneously generated through PTFE decomposition during pyrolysis. The optimized FeCo@N-PCNFs demonstrate superior OER performance in 1 M KOH, requiring an overpotential of 273 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming commercial RuO 2 (320 mV). The catalyst maintains 91.4% of its initial current over 32 h, with enhanced charge transfer kinetics (R ct = 0.77 Ω). This method simplifies the synthesis of porous carbon-based electrocatalysts while achieving high activity and durability.

A hierarchical g-C 3 N 4 /FeCo@CNT composite is fabricated by a three-stage strategy. • CNT shells protect FeCo cores from thermal oxidation and electrochemical corrosion. • At 400 °C, RLmin reaches −22.01 dB with 4.03 GHz EAB, showing thermal resilience. • This work unites broadband absorption, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is emerging as a promising microwave absorbing material owing to its chemical/thermal stability and tunable dielectric properties. However, its intrinsic low electrical conductivity and the lack of magnetic loss mechanism present obstacles to practical applications. Herein, a hierarchically structured g-C 3 N 4 /FeCo@CNT composite was fabricated via a three-stage sequential strategy. The hollow tubular g-C 3 N 4 framework serves as a low-density dielectric scaffold and facilitates multiple internal reflections, whereas the FeCo@CNT hybrids establish a conductive network and contribute substantial magnetic loss. Moreover, the CNT shell effectively protects the FeCo cores against thermal oxidation and electrochemical corrosion. Benefiting from the balanced dielectric–magnetic synergy, the composite achieves an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.07 GHz at a thickness of only 2.2 mm, with a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −17.86 dB at room temperature. Notably, the RL min further reaches −22.01 dB and the corresponding bandwidth remains 4.03 GHz at 400 °C, underscoring exceptional high-temperature resilience. This research offers new insights into the rational design of g-C₃N₄-based microwave absorbers that simultaneously reconcile broadband microwave absorption with high-temperature stability and corrosion resistance.
