Ionic-liquid-assisted synthesis of Fe/Co diatomic catalysts on hollow carbon nanospheres for lithium–sulfur batteries

Yuhao Wang,Zhenye Zhu,Guanglei Li,Shengmin Chen,Yapeng Yue,Gefeng Li,Zhenghong Yan,Liang Zhou,Rongshu Zhu,Jiaheng Zhang

Background Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical energy density. However, their practical deployment is hindered by the polysulfide shuttling effect and sluggish redox kinetics. Methods We demonstrate an ionic liquid (BMIM-BF4)-assisted strategy to synthesize hollow carbon nanospheres anchored with Fe-Co diatomic catalysts (NFB-FeCoNC/HSs). Significant findings Systematic characterization reveals that the dual-metal sites synergistically enhance bidirectional sulfur redox reactions, while the ionic liquid-derived heteroatoms (N, F, B) optimize catalyst porosity and metal loading density. Electrochemical evaluations show the sulfur cathode achieves remarkable cycling stability with 59.28% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Notably, under high sulfur loading (8.89 mg cm⁻²) and lean electrolyte conditions (E/ S = 5.3 μL mg⁻¹), the battery delivers an exceptional areal capacity of 8.87 mAh cm⁻². Long-term cycling at 1 C exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 1001.12 mAh g⁻¹ with 415.4 mAh g⁻¹ retained after 1000 cycles, corresponding to a minimal decay rate of 0.58% per cycle. This work establishes a paradigm for designing hierarchical diatomic catalysts to address critical challenges in Li-S systems.

Magnetic Field Induced Spin State Optimization in Fe-Co Dual-Active Centers for Superior Trifunctional Water Splitting

Yi Zheng,Xin Luo,Sizhe Li,Zhengxian Shen,Hui Su

Faced with a global energy crisis and ecological degradation, overall water splitting (OWS) is a pivotal approach for renewable energy conversion and storage. However, its industrial application is hindered by the high energy barriers/sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as well as the scarcity of precious metal catalysts limiting large-scale deployment. Herein, a cobalt-based layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) was used as the precursor, and a multi-strategy synergistic modification (hydrothermal synthesis, Fe doping, sulfurization, and external magnetic field magnetization) was applied to fabricate the Fe-Co3S4-MS-20 min electrocatalyst. This strategy establishes Fe-Co bimetallic synergistic active centers, and magnetic treatment modulates the electron configuration of Fe 3dorbitals without changing the material’s lattice spacing or morphology. Structural characterizations and electrochemical measurements were used to investigate the effects of combined modifications on the catalyst’s phase structure, morphology, electronic structure, and trifunctional catalytic performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), OER, and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The Fe-Co3S4-MS-20 min catalyst exhibits a larger electrochemical active surface area, lower charge transfer resistance, and smaller Tafel slope in 1 M KOH, it achieves overpotentials of 165 mV for HER (10 mA·cm−2) and 310 mV for OER (100 mA·cm−2), along with superior UOR performance and long-term stability. In situ impedance and Raman spectroscopy confirm that magnetization accelerates charge transfer and promotes in situ reconstruction. Synergistic multi-strategy regulation optimizes the electronic structure of active centers, reducing electrocatalytic energy barriers. This work provides new insights into designing high-performance non-precious metal electrocatalysts and offers experimental support for external magnetic field regulation in electrocatalyst modification.

Defect and hydration regulation in Ba/Fe co-doped Ruddlesden–Popper nickelate for reversible protonic ceramic cells

Zhenfei Li,Haoteng Yuan,Chenzhao Liu,Anas Mousa,Liyuan Fan,Dong Yan,Bin Hua,Lichao Jia

The practical deployment of reversible protonic ceramic cells requires oxygen electrodes that can operate efficiently and reversibly without relying on cobalt- and strontium-containing perovskites, that often suffer from thermal mismatch, surface segregation, and durability degradation. Here, we report a Sr/Co-free Ba/Fe co-doped Ruddlesden–Popper nickelate, Pr 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 4+δ (PBNF0.1), as an efficient and stable oxygen electrode. Ba incorporation stabilizes the layered Pr 2 NiO 4+δ framework, while Fe substitution regulates the Ni valence state, promotes oxygen-vacancy formation, and enhances hydration capability, thereby improving oxygen-electrode kinetics. Consequently, PBNF0.1 exhibits reduced polarization resistance compared with Pr 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4+δ (PBN) and delivers excellent reversiblecell performance, achieving 1.28 W cm −2 in fuel-cell mode and −2.47 A cm −2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 700 °C. Stable operation under fuel-cell, electrolysis, and reversible cycling conditions further highlights Ba/Fe co-doping as an effective strategy for durable Sr/Co-free oxygen electrodes.

Micro-electrolytic degradation of rhodamine B by Cu-Fe-Co trimetallic catalysts: Synergistic mechanisms and reaction pathways

Shuzhen Yang,Bingjing Tian,Yanfang Huang,Bingbing Liu,Shengpeng Su,Wenjuan Wang,Guihong Han

The persistent dye rhodamine B (RhB) in textile wastewater poses severe ecological threats, demanding efficient and sustainable treatment technologies. This study synthesized a novel trimetallic Cu-Fe-Co catalyst via a nitrogen-atmosphere co-reduction method. The catalyst’s unique advantage lies in the synergistic effects of Cu, Fe, and Co, which significantly enhance catalytic performance. The redox-active phases of Cu, combined with the Fenton-like reactivity of Fe, are further optimized by Co doping to improve reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and electron transfer efficiency. Characterization revealed a dendritic structure dominated by Cu, Cu₂O, and FeO phases, with Co-induced lattice expansion (Δ d / d = +0.25 %) enhancing surface reactivity. Under optimized conditions (pH 3, 1.5 g/L catalyst, 20 mg/L RhB), the ternary Cu-Fe-Co catalyst achieved 99.8 % RhB degradation within 40 min, with high mineralization efficiency (46.5 % TOC removal, 82.1 % COD removal). Mechanistic studies demonstrated that Co incorporation promotes the conversion of superoxide radicals (·O₂⁻) into long-lived singlet oxygen (¹O₂), synergistically enhancing oxidative effects from ·OH and ¹O₂, while in situ H₂O₂ generation drives radical chain reactions. Compared to binary catalysts, the ternary system exhibits superior degradation kinetics for RhB and maintains 95.8 % degradation efficiency even after five cycles. This study provides new insights into trimetallic catalyst design, highlighting its practical potential for wastewater treatment.

Synthesis and Adsorption Desulfurization Performance of Modified Mesoporous Silica Materials M-MCM-41 (M = Fe, Co, Zn)

Guo Yu-Hua,Pan Guo-Xiang,Xu Min-Hong,Wu Tao,Wang Yong-Ya

Adsorption desulfurization is a potential new method for deep desulfurization of fuel oil. The development of adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and selectivity is the core of deep adsorption desulfurization. The adsorption behavior of thiophene in MCM-41 mesoporous materials modified by various metal ions was studied in order to understand the adsorption desulfurization process of molecular sieves. The Fe-, Co-, and Zn-modified MCM-41 materials were prepared using a one-step in situ hydrothermal synthesis method. The modified MCM-41 molecular sieves maintained the mesoporous structure, and the metal ions had specific dispersion on the surface of the molecular sieves. Adsorption of thiophene on the surfaces of molecular sieves had both physical and chemical characteristics. The adsorption desulfurization performance of the modified molecular sieve was superior to that of the pure silica molecular sieve. In the simulated gasoline with sulfur content of 220 μg/g, when the amount of adsorbent used was 100 mg, the adsorptive desulfurization performance tended to be in equilibrium, and the optimum adsorption temperature was 30°C. Fe-MCM-41 and MCM-41 molecular sieves reached adsorption equilibrium after ~60 min, but the desulfurization rate of Co-MCM-41 and Zn-MCM-41 still increased slightly. The kinetic simulation results indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetics adsorption model described well the adsorption process of thiophene on molecular sieves. The molecular sieve Fe-MCM-41 had the best desulfurization performance with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 14.02 mg/g and the desulfurization rate was ~90%.

Novel colorimetric aptasensor based on MOF-derived materials and its applications for organophosphorus pesticides determination

Zheng Shen,Deyan Xu,Guangxian Wang,Lingjun Geng,Rui Xu,Guanjie Wang,Yemin Guo,Xia Sun

For the visual detection of four organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), a colorimetric aptasensor was developed based on aptamer-mediated bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nano-polymers. Fe-Co magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and Fe-N-C nanozymes were prepared based on pyrolytic reaction, and were labeled with broad spectrum aptamers and complementary chains of organophosphorus pesticides respectively. The hybridization of aptamers and complementary chains led to the formation of nano-polymers. In the presence of target pesticides, they competed with complementary chains for aptamers on Fe-Co MNPs, resulting in a large number of Fe-N-C nanozymes signal labels being released into the supernatant. Fe-N-C nanozymes showed similar activity to peroxidase and catalyzed the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine-hydrogen peroxide (TMB-H 2 O 2 ) color system to turn the solution blue-green under mild conditions. The magnetic probes had good selectivity and sensitivity, and were easily separated by magnetic absorption . The sensor functioned well under optimal conditions, demonstrating good stability and specificity for four pesticides: phorate, profenofos , isocarbophos and omethoate, and the detection limits of four pesticides were as low as 0.16 ng/mL, 0.16 ng/mL, 0.03 ng/mL and 1.6 ng/mL respectively, and the recovery rate of OPs residue in vegetable samples was satisfactory. The work described here provided a simple, rapid and sensitive way to construct a biosensor .

Catalytic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa in Fe-Co-MOFs system for efficient CO2 fixation and high-value conversion

Ruting Huang,Peidong Ma,Yeyin Zhang,Kaiming Chen,Liping Wang,Ranran Wang,Xianyang Shi,Ying Yu

The enrichment efficiency during the high-value conversion of carbon dioxide still presents certain limitations in practical applications. Iron-cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, which exhibit lower toxicity to Microcystis aeruginosa , have been successfully introduced into microalgae solutions to address the issue of low CO 2 concentration in interfacial reactions. When 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid was employed as an organic ligand under synthesis conditions of 130°C, pH 3.5, and a reaction time of 15 h, the resulting MOF exhibited a CH₄ yield of 92.6 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ in the photocatalytic system at room temperature (25°C). The combination of Microcystis aeruginosa with the optimal Fe-Co-MOFs system achieved a selectivity of up to 96.1 % in converting CO 2 into CH 4 . When Microcystis aeruginosa was cultured in a modified medium with a pH of 6.78 and 5 mg of NDC-T130 at 25°C for 12 h, an OD 600 of 0.192 ± 0.01 was observed. The CH₄ yield from the Microcystis aeruginosa -NDC-T130 co-culture composite system was 1.46 times that of the Fe-Co-MOFs. Density-functional theory calculations indicate that carbon dioxide molecules preferentially adsorb on the crystal surfaces of (CoFe 2 )O 4 (113) and (Co 0.457 Fe 0.543 )(Co 1.543 Fe 0.457 )O 4 (311), with the Co site being more likely to serve as the reactive site for CO 2 photoreduction to CH 4 within the Fe-Co-MOFs. Transcriptome analysis demonstrates that MOFs enhance the dark reactions of microalgae and facilitate further CO 2 fixation for photosynthesis and electron transfer, which are crucial for improving the high-value CO 2 conversion efficiency of this system. This strategy provides both experimental and theoretical support for iron-based MOFs as photocatalytic materials, regardless of CO 2 concentration.

Fe-Co synergistic CoFe2O4 activates peroxymonosulfate for singlet oxygen-dominated 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexanitrostilbene oxidation in energetic wastewater

Lingzhen Miao,Siqi Luo,Ziru Liang,Ming Lu,Pengcheng Wang

The treatment of wastewater laden with energetic compounds, particularly 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexanitrostilbene (HNS), remains highly challenging owing to the environmental persistence and inherent toxicity of nitroaromatic derivatives. Herein, we reported a CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system for the first-time efficient degradation of HNS. The CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS process afforded 96.3% removal of HNS within 150 min, together with 89.3% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and 49.5% total organic carbon (TOC) removal, indicating substantial deep oxidation and partial mineralization. Mechanistic studies combining quenching experiments, EPR spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations disclosed a synergistic radical/non-radical pathway dominated by 1 O 2 , with Fe incorporation enhancing PMS adsorption, charge transfer, and catalytic activation. HPLC-MS revealed degradation intermediates and supported three plausible degradation pathways, whereas QSAR analysis indicated progressive detoxification during oxidation. The catalyst further exhibited excellent stability, negligible metal leaching, and broad applicability toward actual HNS production wastewater and other energetic organic pollutants. These findings identify CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS as a promising platform for the efficient remediation of hazardous energetic compound wastewater.

Dual-channel electron transfer boosting Fe/Co redox cycling in Co9S8/FeS catalyst for sustainable Fenton-like degradation

Die Yuan,Kai Li,Xuebin Lu,Chaoqin Zhao,Guijian Zhang,Ping Ning,Dongdong Zhang,Xin Sun,Shuangyou Bao,Chi Wang

A dual-channel electron-donation pathway enables reductant-free Fe 2+ /Co 2+ regeneration. • Pollutants and S 2- synergistically drive reversible M(III)/M(II) redox cycling. • Co 9 S 8 /FeS/PMS achieves rapid and complete levofloxacin degradation within 10 min. A magnetic Co 9 S 8 /FeS composite derived from cobalt slag was developed for reductant-free PMS activation through a novel dual-channel electron-donation pathway involving S 2- species and levofloxacin (LEV). The catalytic performance and mechanism were investigated through degradation kinetics, reactive-species identification, X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy (XAFS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, density functional theory (DFT) and life cycle assessment. The Co 9 S 8 /FeS/PMS system completely degraded LEV within 10 min (k = 0.4498 min −1 ), maintained efficient removal over pH 3.0–11.0 and after five cycles (>95%), with 1 O 2 as the dominant reactive species. DFT calculations, together with XAFS/XPS analyses, revealed that S 2− and LEV serve as dual electron donors to facilitate Fe 3+ /Co 3+ reduction, achieving nearly complete Fe/Co redox cycling and sustained PMS activation. Compared with conventional single-electron-donor Fenton-like systems, this strategy eliminates the need for external reductants and substantially reduces environmental impacts, offering a sustainable route for converting cobalt slag into recyclable catalysts for antibiotic wastewater treatment. Enhanced Selective Hydrogenation of Acetophenone over KIT-6 Supported Pd-MO x (M = Fe, Co, Ni) Hybrid Nanostructures

Yifan Zhang,Jiaying Liu,Shiwei Wang,Zhihao Yu,Haojian Zhang,Dong Wang,Lin Zhu,Chunzheng Wu,Hongbo Yu

Modifying noble metal catalysts with transition metal oxides (MO x ) can markedly enhance catalytic performance through synergistic effects, yet precise spatial colocalization of active metal and promoter phases remains challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of KIT-6 supported Pd-MO x (M = Fe, Co, Ni) hybrid nanostructures via in situ transformation of bimetallic PdM nanoparticles under controlled thermal conditions. The resulting Pd-MO x /KIT-6 catalysts displayed superior activity and selectivity in the selective hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol compared with monometallic Pd/KIT-6. Among them, Pd-CoO x /KIT-6 (Pd/Co=1:1) achieved the highest performance, with 99.7% acetophenone conversion and 98.2% selectivity, and demonstrated broad applicability for hydrogenating diverse ketones. Structural and kinetic studies revealed that interfacial Pd-CoO x sites play a pivotal role: Pd domains efficiently dissociate H 2 , while CoO x species enhance acetophenone adsorption. This synergistic interface-driven mechanism provides a general and costeffective strategy for the selective hydrogenation of multifunctional substrates.

Heterojunction-Engineered Co, Fe co-doped Ni2P@Ti₃C₂Tₓ with 3D Network Structure for Enhanced Lithium Storage

Wei Jiang,Yajun Li,Hongcheng Li,Yuhao Fu,Yi Li,Jian Ren,Qian Li,Limei Pan,Jian Yang

In this work, a unique three-dimensional (3D) network NiFeCoP@Ti₃C₂Tₓ composite, consisting of Co, Fe co-doped Ni 2 P (NiFeCoP) nanosheets anchored on Ti₃C₂Tₓ nanosheets via heterojunction, was situ constructed by phosphidizing the NiFeCo-LDH@Ti₃C₂Tₓ precursor. The 3D network structure establishes a 3D conductive network while generating a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, which efficiently accelerates electron/ion transport and simultaneously improves the structure stability of the electrode. DFT calculations demonstrate that Co doping further optimizes the electronic structure of NiFeCoP, introduces additional active sites, thereby promoting electrochemical reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect among Ni, Fe, and Co with different redox potentials effectively buffers the volume changes during charge/discharge processes. Consequently, NiFeCoP@Ti₃C₂Tₓ as lithium ion batteries (LIBs) anode shows outstanding electrochemical performance at different current density (950   mAh/g after 340 cycles at 0.5   A/g, 816   mAh/g after 900 cycles at 1   A/g, 541   mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 2   A/g).
