Peroxydisulfate-based Non-radical Oxidation of Rhodamine B by Fe-Mn Doped Granular Activated Carbon: Kinetics and Mechanism Study

Jiahua Wu,Xuan Yang,Dong Xu,Say Leong Ong,Jiangyong Hu

While numerous persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been studied based on fancy catalysts, the practical combination of Fe or Mn modified granular activated carbon (GAC) has seldom been investigated. The present study focused on a green and readily synthesized Fe−Mn bimetallic oxide doped GAC (Fe−Mn@GAC), to uncover its catalytic kinetics and mechanism when used in the peroxydisulfate (PDS)-based oxidation process for degrading Rhodamine B (RhB), a representative xenobiotic dye. The synthesized Fe−Mn@GAC was characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, ICP-OES and XPS analyses to confirm its physicochemical properties. The catalytic kinetics of Fe−Mn@GAC+PDS system were evaluated under varying conditions, including PDS and catalyst dosages, solution pH, and the presence of anions. It was found Fe−Mn@GAC exhibited robust catalytic performance, being insensitive to a wide pH range from 3 to 11, and the presence of anions such as Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − and CO 3 2− . The catalytic mechanism was investigated by EPR and quenching experiments. The results indicated the catalytic system processed a non-radical oxidation pathway, dominated by direct electron transfer between RhB and Fe−Mn@GAC, with singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) playing a secondary role. The catalytic system also managed to maintain a RhB removal above 81 % in successive 10 cycles, and recover to 89.5 % after simple DI water rinse, showing great reusability. The catalytic system was further challenged by real dye-containing wastewater, achieving a decolorization rate of 84.5 %. This work not only provides fresh insight into the kinetics and mechanism of the Fe−Mn@GAC+PDS catalytic system, but also demonstrates its potential in the practical application in real dye-containing wastewater treatment.

Nanozyme Colorimetric Sensor Array Based on Bimetal–Organic Framework MIL-53 (Fe, Mn) for the Discrimination of Biological Antioxidants

Huining Lan,Jingge Niu,Tianshu Luo,Louqun Wang,Xiaohong Hou

Biological antioxidants play a crucial role in numerous disease-related biological processes, which has led to significant interest in their identification. In this research, a colorimetric sensor array was created. It uses MIL-53 (Fe, Mn) nanozymes to simultaneously detect multiple antioxidants. The bimetallic nanozymes, MIL-53(Fe, Mn), were synthesized by using a solvent-thermal method. This framework demonstrated notable oxidase-like catalytic ability. In particular, it facilitates the conversion of colorless TMB to a blue compound under different pH conditions. When antioxidants were introduced into the reaction system, the sensor array exhibited cross-reactivity, resulting in distinct color signals. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was successfully utilized to precisely identify the different concentrations of cysteine (CYS), glutathione (GSH), dopamine (DA), and ascorbic acid (AA) and their combinations. This method enabled accurate determination of the amounts of these substances both individually and in mixtures, providing a reliable way to analyze their concentrations in an experimental context. Furthermore, the prepared sensor array combined with the smartphone successfully distinguished the target antioxidants in the serum. The proposed sensing method would be expected to have practical applications in diagnosis.

Synergistic optimization of thermoelectric and mechanical properties in Cu2SnSe3-based thermoelectric materials through transition-metal co-doping (Fe, Mn)

Songtao Dong,Tian-yu Zhang,Jing Luan,Honglei Wang,Lei Wang,Hongbo Ju

As a viable p-type thermoelectric (TE) material, Cu 2 SnSe 3 has attracted increasing attention, primarily due to its moderate band gap and tunable electronic structure. Nevertheless, its practical TE utilization is significantly limited by its inherently high lattice thermal conductivity ( κ l ) and suboptimal power factor. Herein, a Fe/Mn co-doping strategy is proposed to concomitantly regulate electrical and thermal transport properties, thereby achieving a remarkable improvement in the overall TE performance. A series of Cu 2 Sn 1–2x Fe x Mn x Se 3 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06) ceramic samples were fabricated via vacuum-based melting followed by hot-press sintering, which concurrently introduced abundant lattice defects and a CuSe secondary phase. These multi-scale structural features significantly enhance phonon scattering, causing a substantial reduction in thermal conductivity. Consequently, the total thermal conductivity of Cu 2 Sn 0.92 Fe 0.04 Mn 0.04 Se 3 is reduced to a minimum value of 0.432 W m −1 K −1 at 773 K. Meanwhile, Fe/Mn co-doping notably increases the charge carrier concentration ( n ), resulting in a dramatic enhancement in electrical conductivity—from 189.8 S cm −1 for Cu 2 SnSe 3 to 1381 S cm −1 for Cu 2 Sn 0.92 Fe 0.04 Mn 0.04 Se 3. Although the Seebeck coefficient exhibites a slight to moderate reduction, the significant increase in electrical conductivity prevails, yielding a substantially optimized power factor ( PF ). A maximum PF of 500.1 μW m −1 K −2 was achieved, together with a peak ZT value of 0.89 at 773 K, representing a 5.23-fold enhancement compared to the undoped Cu 2 SnSe 3 sample ( ZT = 0.17). In addition to enhancing thermoelectric performance, Fe/Mn co-doping significantly improves the mechanical of Cu 2 SnSe 3 . Specifically, the Young’s modulus ( E ) and hardness ( H ) of Cu 2 Sn 0.92 Fe 0.04 Mn 0.04 Se 3 increased by 18.2% and 25.2%, respectively, relative to the undoped sample—demonstrating markedly enhanced mechanical robustness. These results establish Fe/Mn co-doping as an effective and versatile strategy for decoupling electrical and thermal transport in Cu 2 SnSe 3 -based materials, thereby providing a promising pathway toward high-performance thermoelectric materials with superior structural integrity.

Tailoring polarization homogeneity in discontinuous-columnar Bi(Fe,Mn)O3 thin films via dislocation engineering with controlled self-assembly

Sui Huiting,Lou Wenhua,Xiao Shibing,He Jia,Wu Fuling,Liu Ying,Wei Jianbiao,Lu Haijie,Sun Huajun,Ma Xiaoguang,Zhang Shujun

Defect microstructures, particularly dislocations, are pivotal in determining the functional properties of ferroelectric thin films. While their density is routinely considered, the critical role of their spatial configuration has remained largely unexplored and difficult to control. Here, we develop a controlled self-assembly strategy for dislocations in Bi(Fe,Mn)O 3 thin films on Ni-Cr that directly addresses this challenge. By employing a LaNiO 3 buffer layer, we template a discontinuous-columnar grain structure and guide the self-assembly of edge dislocations along grain boundaries in a topologically-protected configuration. The resulting ordered microstructure promotes a more uniform strain field and more coherent FeO 6 octahedral tilting, significantly enhances polarization homogeneity, leading to a lower domain-switching barrier and a more uniform domain pinning effect. Consequently, the BFMO thin film exhibits dramatically superior aging stability after 60 days at 60 °C, exhibiting far smaller reductions in remanent polarization (~20%) and coercive field (~35%) compared to the BFMO thin film grown directly on Ni-Cr. These findings establish a defect engineering paradigm wherein the deliberate dislocation rearrangement is leveraged to unlock superior ferroelectric performance.

Atomically Engineered Fe/Mn Catalysts Enable Ultrafast Self-Sustaining Water Purification via Oxidant-Free Fenton-like Electron-Transfer Reaction

Ping Zhang,Chenchen Zhao,Fei Jiang,Chuyang Wu,Tianqi Wang,Xing Xu,Mengjie Wu,Zhanli Chen,Youqin Zou

Green Fenton-like reactions based on monometallic single-atom dual-reaction-center systems have emerged as promising strategies for sustainable water purification owing to their oxidant-free operation and low energy demand. However, their practical deployment is often hindered by limited degradation kinetics and unresolved mechanisms. Here, we report a carbon nitride-supported Fe/Mn bimetallic catalyst composed of Fe nanoclusters and adjacent Mn single atoms (FeMn-CN) that enables ultrafast and self-sustaining pollutant degradation under oxidant-free conditions. The catalyst achieves 99.5% removal of bisphenol A (BPA) within 3 min, setting an ultrahigh rate to date among self-sustaining water purification systems. Combined experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal that the reaction proceeds predominantly via a direct electron-transfer pathway. Fe nanoclusters serve as primary electron acceptors, extracting electrons from BPA without external oxidants, while adjacent Mn single atoms coordinated in Mn-N 4 sites synergistically enhance the electron-accepting capacity of Fe and substantially lower the charge-transfer energy barrier. This atomic-level cooperation endows FeMn-CN with exceptional activity across a broad pH range (pH 2-10), strong tolerance to complex water matrices, high selectivity toward electron-rich contaminants and facile regeneration. Furthermore, continuous-flow reactor tests and life-cycle assessment collectively verify the scalability and superior environmental sustainability of the FeMn-CN process. This work establishes an atomic-level design principle for electron-transfer-dominated self-sustaining remediation materials, advancing the development of next-generation oxidant-free water purification technologies.

Nitrogen pollution diagnosis and targeted nitrate removal in a historic urban moat using a novel Fe-Mn oxide composite

Fan Pan,Yang Xu,Huan Liu,Yuming Cheng,Jianjun Zhou,Kerun Yang,Yang Zhao,Hongkun Ma,Furong Zhang,Shengkai Cao

Building upon a diagnostic assessment of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the Jingzhou Moat, this work developed a novel Fe-Mn oxide composite for the targeted removal of nitrate. An assessment of the water quality revealed a typical pattern of low phosphorus and high nitrogen pollution, with nitrate being the predominant contaminant. A novel Fe-Mn oxide modified activated carbon (FeMnAC) composite with a well-anchored MnFe 2 O 4 spinel structure was synthesized using a controlled activation, impregnation, and calcination procedure. The composite has an increased point of zero charge (pH 9.6), allowing for excellent nitrate adsorption throughout a wide pH range (2∼10). The adsorption process follows the Langmuir monolayer chemisorption model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 23.19 mg·g −1 . FeMnAC demonstrated exceptional selectivity in the presence of competing anions like PO 4 3– while achieving highly efficient nitrate removal in real moat water samples in 120 min. After four regeneration cycles using NaCl, the adsorbent showed good reusability, retaining more than 50% of its initial capacity. This work offers a transferable methodological framework for nitrogen pollution control in similar heritage urban water systems by combining pollution diagnosis, targeted material design, and practical validation.

Self-sufficient Fe/Mn@CuO₂ nanozyme with cascade ROS amplification and GSH depletion for superior antibiofilm and bactericidal performance

Lihua Fan,Yuhan Niu,Yanru Zhang,Di Wu,Yongning Wu,Guoliang Li

The escalating challenge of bacterial resistance necessitates the development of novel antibacterial agents, positioning the synthesis of nanomaterials as a pivotal strategy for controlling pathogenic bacteria in the food sector. In this study, a novel H₂O₂ self-supplying nanocomposite was developed, comprising Fe/Mn nanoparticles functionalized with cuprous oxide (CuO₂), denoted as Fe/Mn@CuO₂. This composite exhibit tandem peroxidase (POD)-mimetic and glutathione (GSH)-depleting activities, enabling the on-demand generation of hydroxyl radicals via self-produced H₂O₂ and O₂ under acidic conditions (pH 5.5). The synergistic integration of H₂O₂ self-generation, POD-like catalysis, and GSH consumption significantly enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to efficient eradication of E. coli (99.4%) and Staphylococcus aureus (99.1%) and remarkably antibiofilm efficacy. This multi-mechanistic action induced pronounced morphological alterations and severe membrane disruption in both bacterial strains. Furthermore, Fe/Mn@CuO₂ demonstrated the ability to denature DNA/RNA, disrupt energy metabolism, and achieve potent bacterial inactivation without detectable cytotoxic side effects. This work marked a substantial advancement in overcoming the drawbacks of conventional bactericidal strategy by combining self-sustaining H₂O₂ supply, POD-like activity, and GSH depletion, thereby presenting a highly promising antibacterial platform. Iron/manganese-zeolitic imidazolate framework (Fe/Mn-ZIF) nanozyme combined with acetylcholinesterase for colorimetric rapid detection of organophosphorus pesticides

Jianfang Jiang,Kuaqian Deng,Rui Duan,Cong An,Fanglin Dao,Jiali Huang

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are extensively utilized in agricultural production, but they pose significant threats to environment and organisms. This study aims to develop a novel method for the rapid and efficient detection of OPs. Initially, an iron/manganese zeolitic imidazolate framework (Fe/Mn-ZIF) with excellent oxidase-like activity was synthesised. The catalytic performance was evaluated, and the main factors influencing catalytic activity were investigated. Subsequently, a combined acetylcholinesterase assay was employed to detect three OPs. The specificity and recyclability of Fe/Mn-ZIF were also studied. The proposed colorimetric strategy demonstrated strong linear relationships: 0.1–2 mg/L for trichlorfon, 0.2–14 mg/L for glyphosate, and 0.4–10 mg/L for glufosinate, with the low detection limits of 0.024, 0.080, and 0.121 mg/L (3 S/N) respectively. Good recoveries were observed in real sample detection. This work lays a foundation for enhancing the catalytic performance of Fe/Mn-ZIF, which holds promise for biosensing applications.

Immobilization of Pb and Cd in red soil using Fe–Mn modified sugarcane bagasse biochar: mechanisms and plant uptake

Ma Chuang,Liu XueMei

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in soil threaten agroecosystem safety and human health. Due to the high bioavailability and mobility of heavy metals in red soil, the risk is further increased. Biochar is widely used for heavy metal immobilization, but original biochar suffers from inherent limitations. Most existing studies of iron (Fe)–manganese (Mn) modified biochar have not focused on red soil, and the relationship with soil–plant responses remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of sugarcane bagasse biochar (BC) and Fe–Mn modified sugarcane bagasse biochar (FMBC) for Pb and Cd immobilization in red soil, and clarify their effect on plant uptake. BC and FMBC were applied to Pb and Cd contaminated red soil for pot experiments with pak choi ( Brassica rapa chinensis ) as an indicator plant. The results showed that both BC and FMBC elevated soil pH, organic matter (SOM), enzyme activities, reduced Pb and Cd bioavailability, and transformed Pb and Cd to stable fractions. FMBC outperformed BC, and the 5% FMBC treatment achieved the optimal remediation efficacy. The 5% FMBC decreased the acid-extractable Pb and Cd by 9.33 and 34.40% compared to control. The plant biomass was significantly increased, Pb and Cd content in edible shoots met the limit standards, and bioconcentration (BCF) and translocation factors (TF) were lowered. Overall, this study establishes theoretical foundations and empirical bases for the application of FMBC to immobilize Pb and Cd in red soils, thereby providing a feasible and eco-friendly approach to support sustainable agriculture and the recycling of agricultural waste.

Degradation of naphthalene with magnetic bio-char activate hydrogen peroxide: Synergism of bio-char and Fe–Mn binary oxides

Ling Li,Cui Lai,Fanglong Huang,Min Cheng,Guangming Zeng,Danlian Huang,Bisheng Li,Shiyu Liu,MingMing Zhang,Lei Qin,Minfang Li,Jiangfan He,Yujin Zhang,Liang Chen

This study investigated the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) activation potential of Fe–Mn binary oxides modified bio-char (FeMn/bio-char) for the degradation of naphthalene , the dominant PAHs in drinking water . Results showed that FeMn/bio-char exhibited 80.7- and 2.18-times decomposition rates towards H 2 O 2 than that of pure bio-char and Fe–Mn binary oxides, respectively, and consequently the FeMn/bio-char/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system presented highest naphthalene removal efficiency. The enhanced catalytic activity could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the combination of bio-char and Fe–Mn binary oxides, such as promoting the adsorption capacity towards contaminant, increasing concentration of persistent free radicals (PFRs) and introducing Fe–Mn binary oxides as new activator. According to the batch-scale experiments, FeMn/bio-char/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system could degrade naphthalene effectively at a wide pH ranges, and 82.2% of naphthalene was degraded under natural pH of 5.6 within 148 min. Free radicals quenching studies and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses verified that the dominant free radical within FeMn/bio-char/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system was hydroxyl radical (•OH). According to the preliminary analysis, the generation of •OH were ascribed to the activation of H 2 O 2 by Fe (II), Mn (II) and PFRs on the catalyst surface. The mainly degradation intermediates of naphthalene were identified by GC-MS analysis. Consequently, the possible degradation pathways were proposed. Moreover, naphthalene degradation experiments were also conducted in river, tap water , industrial wastewater as well as medical wastewater, and the results indicated that the FeMn/bio-char/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system was effective in the treatment of naphthalene in natural waters. This study brings a valuable insight for the potential environmental applications of modified bio-char.

Novel bimetallic MIL-53(Fe/Mn) as dual cocatalysts promote charge separation efficiency of CdS for photocatalytic reduction of CO2

Ruina Xuan,Jiwen Chen,Yixin Dou,Zhuo Jiang,Xiaofang Li,Deng Ding,Chunlei Wang,Juntao Yan,Linbing Sun

Dual-co-catalyst-modified photocatalysts enhance charge separation efficiency, but the traditional dual co-catalyst is still difficult to get a high separation efficiency due to size and aggregation. Herein, we report bimetallic MIL-53(Fe/Mn) as dual co-catalysts with separate electron and hole mediators. CdS NPs were in-situ grown into MIL-53(Fe/Mn) at varying ratios. 20 %CdS/MIL-53(Fe/Mn) composites shown optimum photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity. The XPS results shown the strong interaction between CdS and MIL-53(Fe/Mn). The EPR measure proved the carriers of CdS can be transferred to MIL-53(Fe/Mn) oxidation cluster by the oxo-Fe(III)/Fe(II) and oxo-Mn(II)/Mn(III) redox cycling, and the results also suggest the oxo-Fe(III) and oxo-Mn(II) were redox active sites. We believe the approach that bimetallic MOFs act as dual cocatalyst to improve the photocatalytic activity would open a new avenue for the separation efficiency of photo-generated charge carriers.

Green carbothermal synthesis of magnetic Fe/Mn nanomaterials for efficient rare earth recovery: Adsorption performance, mechanism, and continuous-flow verification

Ganchen Zhou,Zhiqiang Chen,Xiaoying Jin,Zhibiao Chen,Zuliang Chen

Rare earth elements (REEs) have emerged as critical metallic resources in modern industries due to their unique physicochemical properties. However, rare earth elements are inevitably discharged into environments during mining operations, leading to impact the ecosystem and to loss rare earth elements. To address this, the carbonized Fe/Mn nanomaterials (C-Fe/Mn) were synthesized through green carbothermal reduction to achieve efficient recovery of rare earth elements. It can be seen that the maximum adsorption efficiencies of REEs by synthesized material were yttrium (Y(Ⅲ) 98.28 %), lanthanum (La(Ⅲ) 97.37 %), dysprosium (Dy(Ⅲ) 88.75 %), and ytterbium (Yb(Ⅲ) 77.27 %), respectively. Through advanced characterization, C-Fe/Mn's magnetic properties have been confirmed, which enables direct recovery from wastewater and easy separation in application. The results showed that the carbon coating provides additional active sites, thereby enhancing its adsorption capacity, while the presence of zerovalent iron lattice improves its stability. Therefore, its efficient adsorption of rare earth elements is mainly attributed to the combined effect of complexation and electrostatic force. Finally, column experiments demonstrated that rare earth elements can be effectively removed and desorbed by C-Fe/Mn under continuous flow, indicating its potential for practical application. Overall, this approach not only mitigates environmental pollution but also promotes resource recycling, offering dual economic and ecological benefits.
