The three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon materials are helpful for forming thin, light-weight, wide effective absorption bandwidth and strong absorption intensity absorbers. However, previous methods were not environmentally friendly enough. Thus, in this work, the Fe/Fe 3 C@porous carbon was synthesized from soluble starch and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O via chemical bowling and subsequent carbonization at 700 °C with different ratios. When the ratio of starch to Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O is 1:1.5, the porous carbon exhibits a strong absorption ability with minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of −16.64 dB at 16.78 GHz, when the thickness is 1.75 mm and the proportion of paraffin wax is 30 wt%. The synergy of well impedance matching, sufficient loss performance, and interface polarization makes 3D porous carbon materials an excellent wave absorber. This work provides a good inspiration for studying outstanding performance microwave absorption materials.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with high activity, low cost and good durability are crucial to promote the large-scale practical application of fuel cells. Particularly, iron carbide (Fe 3 C) supported on nitrogen-doped carbon has recently demonstrated compelling promise for ORR electrocatalysis . In this paper, we report the facile synthesis of mesoporous Fe/N-doped graphene with encapsulated Fe 3 C nanoparticles (Fe 3 C@Fe/N-graphene) and its superior ORR catalytic activity . This hybrid material was synthesized by the spontaneous oxidative polymerization of dopamine on graphene oxide (GO) sheets in the presence of iron ion , followed by thermal annealing in Argon (Ar) atmosphere. As-prepared material shows high ORR catalytic activity with overwhelming four-electron reduction pathway, long-term durability and high methanol tolerance in alkaline media . This work reports a facile method to synthesize promising ORR electrocatalysis with multiple components and hierarchical architecture, and may offer valuable insight into the underlying mechanism of Fe 3 C-boosted ORR activity of Fe/N doped carbon.

Magnetic carbon spheres are promising electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials due to their strong electromagnetic coupling effect. In the present work, magnetic carbon spheres composed of N-doped carbon spheres (NCSs) with magnetic Fe and Fe 3 C (Fe-Fe 3 C) nanoparticles were synthesized and the contents of Fe nanoparticles were adjusted through dilute hydrochloric acid treatment processes. The prepared NCSs/Fe-Fe 3 C composites dominate excellent EMW absorption performances with an optimal reflection loss value reaching − 63.77 dB at 9.92 GHz under a matching thickness of 2.9 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaches 4.88 GHz. The excellent absorption performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of conductance loss, polarization loss, and magnetic loss arising from the different components of the composites. Moreover, the variation of Fe contents can regulate the dielectric and magnetic permeability characteristics of NCSs/Fe-Fe 3 C composites, and finally balance the impedance matching and attenuation coefficient. Our results pave the way for the development of high-efficiency EMW absorbing materials and clarify the regulation mechanism of magnetic media on the absorption performances of magnetic carbon spheres.

In this study, a series of carbon nanofiber (CNF) based one-dimensional catalysts were prepared by pyrolyzing MIL-88B(Fe) anchored PAN/lignin electrospun nanofibers, which were then employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The results indicated that adjusting the lignin content in nanofiber precursor could engineer the crystalline phase of iron compounds in the catalysts, as well as their catalytic activity and stability. Specifically, the precursor with lower lignin content was converted into Fe 3 O 4 loaded CNF (P2L1-Fe-C), whereas Fe 3 C loaded CNF was obtained (P1L1-Fe-C) by increasing lignin content to 50 wt% in the nanofiber precursor. Having multiple Fe valence states within Fe 3 C which facilitated internal electron transfer, P1L1-Fe-C exhibited high catalytic activity with high stability and low iron ion leaching when activating PMS for BPA degradation. P1L1-Fe-C/PMS system could produce more kinds of active species including hydroxyl radical (•OH) and multiple non-radical species like singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), high-valent iron-oxo species, and electron transfer process. Comparatively, P2L1-Fe-C/PMS system was only able to produce •OH and 1 O 2 . The existence of more BPA degradation pathways resulted in enhanced resistance of P1L1-Fe-C/PMS system towards various environmental interferences. This study inspires a new thinking of developing iron based Fenton-like catalyst with tunable crystalline phases through precursor recipe regulation, achieving both high activity and stability. The development of high-performance silicon/silicon oxide (Si/SiO x ) anodes has attracted great attention in the field of next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, preparing effective Si/SiO x composite materials to address issues such as poor cycling stability, subpar initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), and subpar interface compatibility remains a challenge. This work proposes a simple strategy for preparing Fe/Fe 3 C particle modified thin-layer carbon-coated Si/SiO x composite materials using a mixture of resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) precursor pyrolysis and ultrasonic treatment (referred to as C@Si/SiO x -Fe/Fe 3 C, abbreviated as CSSO-Fe/Fe 3 C). These composite materials are used as anodes for LIBs. Exploiting the benefits of its structure and composition, the CSSO-Fe/Fe 3 C anode offers a high ICE value of 68.7% and maintains a capacity of 563.2 mAh g −1 even after 1200 cycles at a current density of 2.5 A g −1 . Comprehensive characterization and electrochemical studies have elucidated the interface compatibility and structural stability mechanisms induced by the small amount of Fe/Fe 3 C doping and carbon coating, which explain the high capacity and stable cycling performance. Furthermore, when paired with LiCoO 2 cathode, the assembled LiCoO 2 ||CSSO-Fe/Fe 3 C coin-type full battery has a capacity of 80.7 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 76.6% after 200 cycles at 1.0 C. This synthesis approach offers valuable insights for designing high-performance Si/SiO x electrode materials.

Designing and constructing reversible and stable anode materials was vital to lithium/sodium-ion batteries. Here, multiple carbon-protected Mn and Fe based composite anode with three-dimensional cross-linked networks was designed. The MnFe 2 O 4 composite nanoparticles were synthesized via co-precipitation firstly. Then by combining different coating technologies and heat treatment, MnO/Fe 3 C with stable carbon doped (MnO/Fe 3 C@C 3 ) composite anode for lithium/sodium-ion storage was prepared. The results showed that MnO/Fe 3 C@C 3 exhibited the excellent reversible capacities of 608.2 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles and 348.2 mAh g −1 at 10 C after 1500 cycles for lithium-ion battery. MnO/Fe 3 C@C 3 as sodium-ion anode also showed the capacity of 282.4 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles. The study indicated that MnO/Fe 3 C as active components were produced by the doped carbon participating in redox reaction. In addition, the stable doped carbon was also formed by the binding of graphitic carbon with carbon layers. GITT and EIS tests revealed that the addition of MWCNTs could effectively enhance the ion transport kinetics and further optimize the electrochemical performance. This study highlighted a way to construct the active component with stable doped carbon as anode, which could exhibit the excellent recyclability and electrochemical performance.

Iron sludge produced numerously from drinking water treatment plants can be recycled to create catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this study, iron sludge-derived catalysts were synthesized via one-step pyrolysis process by self-reduction in argon atmosphere. The crystallite structures and catalytic performance of these catalysts were strongly dependent on the pyrolytic temperature. The product carbonized at 900 °C (Fe 0 /Fe 3 C) exhibited a superior catalytic behavior with 99% ciprofloxacin (CIP, 10 mg/L) degradation in 20 min due to the synergistic effect of Fe 0 and graphitic carbon. The influences of reaction parameters on the CIP degradation were further investigated and the Fe 0 /Fe 3 C-PMS process had a wide efficient pH range from 3 to 9. The catalyst also exhibited excellent magnetic property and could be easily separated with external magnetic field. Radical quenching study and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests indicated that sulfate radical (SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH), superoxide radical (O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) contributed to the degradation of CIP. This study extended the application of Fe 0 /Fe 3 C to catalytic oxidation of other typical refractory organic contaminants and confirmed its excellent catalytic activity . Overall, this study provided a cost-effective iron sludge reuse method to develop an environment-friendly catalyst for decontamination of organics pollutants, and also to relieve detrimental influences on aqueous environment by discharging the iron sludge.

The Fischer−Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the key industrial process for the transformation of syngas into valuable chemicals and clean fuels, benefits from advanced catalyst design. Iron carbide nanoparticles (Fe 3 C) and their graphene oxide-derived counterpart (Fe 3 C/Graphene) were successfully synthesized. Fe 3 C/Graphene exhibits a large specific surface area, high pore volume, and abundant surface defective sites provided by the reduced graphene oxide support. Together with the stabilized Fe 3 C active phase, these features promote CO activation and C−C coupling, leading to enhanced CO conversion, higher C 5+ selectivity, and suppressed CH 4 formation comparedwith Fe 3 C. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the improved CO activation on Fe 3 C/Graphene originates from reduced electron transfer and weakened Fe−C and C−O bonds. For Fe 3 C, the rate-determining step is CO* + H* → CHO*, whereas for Fe 3 C/Graphene, the rate-determining step is CHO* → CH* + O*. It also reveals that Fe 3 C/Graphene accelerates this step, corroborating the enhanced CO activation observed experimentally. Furthermore, the simulations confirm that defective graphene significantly raises the effective barrier for methanation, perfectly rationalizing the suppressed CH 4 formation. These findings demonstrate that the introduction of graphene oxide is a effective strategy for tailoring the catalytic performance of Fe-based FTS catalysts.

Persulfate (PDS)-based advanced oxidation processes have emerged as promising methods for antibiotic removal, but achieving high catalytic efficiency for tetracycline (TC) degradation remains difficult. The catalytic performance of FeGCB-N in PDS activation depended on Fe content and pyrolysis temperature, with defect density and intermetallic compound formation largely determined by the pyrolysis temperature. The optimized Fe 0.2 GCB-N-800 exhibited remarkable PDS activation performance for tetracycline degradation, achieving over 99% removal within 65 min under conditions of 10 mg·L -1 TC, 1 mM PDS, and pH 3. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) collectively indicate that surface oxygen-containing functional groups, defect sites, and intermetallic Fe compounds provide active sites for PDS activation by FeGCB. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching results demonstrated that superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) were the primary reactive species in TC degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Fe-N is the key active site for PDS activation. Based on DFT results and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, potential degradation pathways for tetracycline (TC) are proposed. ECOSAR toxicity assessment showed that the O 2 •- -mediated pathway would generate fewer toxic byproducts. This work offers an effective approach to design environment friendly catalysts from algae biomass for treating wastewater.

In this work, chitosan whiskers (CWs) were first extracted using low-cost and earth-abundant crab shells as materials by a series of chemical processes, and then assembled into chitosan whisker microspheres (CWMs) via a simple photochemical polymerization approach. Subsequently, a cementite (Fe3C) nanocrystal@N-doped graphitic carbon (Fe3C@NGC) nanocomposite was successfully fabricated by high temperature pyrolysis of CWMs adsorbed with ferric acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)3) at 900 °C. It was found that a suitable growth atmosphere generated inside CWMs during high temperature pyrolysis is critically important to form Fe3C nanocrystal cores, concurrently accompanying a structural transformation from chitosan whiskers to mesoporous graphitic carbon shells with natural nitrogen (N) doping properties, resulting in the formation of a core–shell structure Fe3C@NGC nanocomposite. The resulting samples were evaluated as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In comparison with sole N-doped graphitic carbon without Fe3C nanocrystals obtained by direct pyrolysis of chitosan whisker microspheres at 900 °C (CWMs-900), Fe3C@NGC showed significantly improved ORR catalytic activity. The tolerance to fuel cell molecules (e.g., methanol) and the durability of Fe3C@NGC are obviously superior to commercial Pt/C catalysts in alkaline media. The high ORR performance of Fe3C@NGC could be due to its large surface area (313.7 m2 g−1), a synergistic role of Fe3C nanocrystals, N doping in graphitic carbon creating more catalytic active sites, and a porous structure of the nanocomposite facilitating mass transfer to efficiently improve the utilization of these catalytic active sites.

The rational construction of highly active and robust non-precious metal oxygen reduction electrocatalysts is a vital factor to facilitate commercial applications of Zn-air batteries. In this study, a precise and stable heterostructure , comprised of a coupling of Co 3 Fe 7 and Fe 3 C, was constructed through an interface engineering-induced strategy. The coordination polymerization of the resin with the bimetallic components was meticulously regulated to control the interfacial characteristics of the heterostructure. The synergistic interfacial effects of the heterostructure successfully facilitated electron coupling and rapid charge transfer. Consequently, the optimized CST-FeCo displayed superb oxygen reduction catalytic activity with a positive half-wave potential of 0.855 V vs. RHE. Furthermore, the CST-FeCo air electrode of the liquid zinc-air battery revealed a large specific capacity of 805.6 mAh g Zn -1 , corresponding to a remarkable peak power density of 162.7 mW cm −2 , and a long charge/discharge cycle stability of 220 h, surpassing that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

One-step pyrolysis enabled Fe/N co-doping to form CNT-confined Fe 3 C structures; • Fe 3 C-derived Lewis acidic sites served as the primary centers for activating O 3 ; • Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox cycling promoted ozone activation and ROS generation; • Confinement enhanced O 3 enrichment, •OH yields, and ion tolerance during FeN-BC/O 3 ; • •OH was confirmed as the key oxidizing species for IBP removal; Active metal leaching, inefficient ozone activation, and limited interfacial mass/electron transfer are key factors restricting the performance of conventional catalytic ozonation catalysts. To address these issues, a biomass-derived Fe/N co-doped carbon nanotubes with a nano-confinement structure (FeN-BC) was synthesized via one-pot pyrolysis of rapeseed straw, FeCl 3 •6H 2 O, and melamine at 700 °C under N 2 followed by acid washing and purification. SEM, TEM, and XRD results revealed that Fe and N co-doping promoted in-situ growth of carbon nanotubes with stable encapsulation of Fe 3 C nanoparticles by graphitic layers. In the catalytic ozonation of ibuprofen (IBP), FeN-BC achieved 91.5% removal within 60 min, outperforming sole ozonation and control catalysts (BC, Fe-BC, N-BC). On account of the synergistic function of Fe and N, the Fe 3 C active center exhibited excellent stability, with iron leaching remaining below 0.1 mg L −1 , whereas Fe-BC released 0.51 mg L −1 iron. In addition, FeN-BC retained good catalytic activity after five consecutive cycles. Furthermore, FeN-BC maintained excellent catalytic stability across pH 3–9 and with various inorganic anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , H 2 PO 4 − ). •OH was identified as the dominant reactive species, contributing 86.86% to IBP degradation. Electrochemical and DFT results demonstrated that the nano-confinement effect enhanced interfacial electron transfer, with Fe 3 C Lewis sites serving as the primary active center. IBP degradation followed three pathways, yielding 18 intermediates and accompanied by progressive detoxification. This work advances the understanding of nano-confinement enhanced ozone activation and promotes the development of sustainable biomass-derived catalysts for water purification.
