Effects of CaCl2, HCl, acetic acid or citric acid on dynamic mechanical performances and physicochemical properties of sodium alginate edible films

Huawei Zhou,Ning Yang,Jingwen Hou,Chunwei Yu,Zhu Jin,Ping Zeng,Lingxin Yang,Yuli Fu,Yuanyuan Shen,Shengrong Guo

The effects of CaCl 2 , HCl , acetic acid or citric acid on dynamic mechanical performances and physicochemical properties of sodium alginate (SA) edible films are investigated. The results showed that the storage or loss modulus of the films were greater at 33 % relative humidity (RH) and decreased much slower with temperature (30–90 ℃) at 57 % or 75 % RH after different treatments, with their glass transition temperatures shifting higher. All the treatments improved the water resistance and mechanical properties of SA films. Specifically, CaCl 2 -treated films had the lowest solubility, and highest water contact angle and tensile strength . Acetic acid-treated films had the highest elongation at break. Citric acid-treated films had the lowest equilibrium moisture content and water vapor permeability. Film surface morphology kept dense and compact after various treatments. FT-IR spectra revealed that all the acid treatments increased hydrogen-bond interaction. This work provides new information for SA edible film modification.

A 2D mesoporous photocatalyst constructed by the modification of biochar on BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets for enhancing the TC-HCl degradation activity

Yan Yan,Xu Tang,Changchang Ma,Hai Huang,Kesheng Yu,Yang Liu,Ziyang Lu,Chunxiang Li,Zhi Zhu,Pengwei Huo

In this paper, a two-dimensional (2D) photocatalyst by the BiOCl ultrathin nanosheet modification of biochar (derived from biomass bamboo leaves) was successfully prepared via a facile one-pot hydrothermal process. The synthesized C/BiOCl photocatalysts showed a satisfactory performance on the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl). The enhanced photocatalytic activity originating from the introduction of biochar facilitated the rapid transfer of electrons generated from the defect states of the BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets. Moreover, the more the photo-electrons transferred in biochar, the more the quantities of active ˙O2− generated during the photocatalytic reaction, which was confirmed from the free radical capture tests. This work can be extended to the modified routes of BiOCl in the further applications of environmental wastewater treatments.

Mechanisms of Elemental Mercury Transformation on α-Fe2O3(001) Surface from Experimental and Theoretical Study: Influences of HCl, O2, and SO2

Ting Liu,Lucheng Xue,Xin Guo,Jia Liu,Yu Huang,Chuguang Zheng

The reaction mechanisms of a mixture gas of HCl, O2, and SO2 in Hg0 adsorption on α-Fe2O3(001) surface are clarified by a group of adsorption experiments and theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory. The role of O2 in removing Hg0 is greatly influenced by the reaction temperature, meanwhile, the O atom coverage could affect the adsorption performance of Hg0. The dissociated O2 competes with the active sites of Cl species on Fe surface at low temperature, however, at medium temperature HCl and O2 could simultaneously facilitate the Hg0 transformation. Combined with the theoretical calculations, the role of SO2 and the probable pathways in removing Hg0 are discussed. Lower concentration of SO2 as well as HCl could dissociate on α-Fe2O3(001) surface, and the intermediates combine with gaseous Hg0, forming mercury–sulfur, mercury–chlorine compounds, and so forth. In addition, the different concentrations of SO2 are also discussed, and the corresponding X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis on contrasted samples is conducted to research the morphological characterization, providing a reliable basis for judging the probable pathways of Hg0 transformation.

Decoding the corrosion inhibition mechanism of a new cinnamaldehyde derivative for mild steel in HCl medium by ToF-SIMS and AIMD

Z.N. Jiang,J.M. Duan,S.Y. Tian,R.Y. Xue,C.F. Dong,G.A. Zhang

A green corrosion inhibitor, (2 E , 4 E )-2-cyano-5-phenyl-2,4-pentadienoic acid (CPPA), was synthesized via one-step modification of cinnamaldehyde. CPPA exhibits outstanding inhibition effect for mild steel (MS) in HCl medium with an inhibition efficiency of 98.83 % at a concentration of 0.6 mM with good inhibition stability. The inhibition mechanism of CPPA was elucidated by combining surface characterization techniques with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. XPS and ToF-SIMS analyses indicate that CPPA molecules could adsorb on MS surface by covalent bonding through N, C, and O atoms. AIMD simulations reveal that CPPA approaches to steel surface motivated by van der Waals force, i.e., physisorption occurs. Subsequently, the physisorption of CPPA is transformed into a strong and stable chemisorption, which was demonstrated by IGMH, CPPA-Fe bond length, electron density difference and PDOS characteristics. The adsorbed CPPA film significantly improves the hydrophobicity of MS surface, and acts as a shield to effectively hinder the diffusion and access of corrosive particles to steel surface, thus exhibiting outstanding and stable corrosion inhibition performance.

A novel and effective N, S co-doped lignin based carbon dots inhibitor for cold rolled steel in 1.0 M HCl solution

Pan Shijie,Li Shuli,Deng Shuduan,Li Xianghong

Lignin is an ideal precursor for developing efficient, green, and low-cost carbon dot corrosion inhibitors because it is one of the most abundant sustainable resources. Nevertheless, its potential in this field has not yet been fully exploited. In this paper, a novel type of N, S-doped lignin-based carbon dots (N, S-LCDs) with ultra-high inhibition performance was successfully prepared, using lignin as a precursor and 2-thiazoline-2-thiol as both the nitrogen and sulfur source. It was demonstrated that the N, S-LCDs maintained a high corrosion inhibition efficiency of nearly 90% within the temperature range of 20 to 50 °C, with the maximum efficiency of 97.24% observed at 30 °C. Furthermore, a prolonged immersion test over 72 h confirmed the excellent stability of N, S-LCDs. Characterization results indicated that the synergistic co-doping of N and S is the key to N, S-LCDs superior performance. The adsorption of N, S-LCDs on the cold rolled steel (CRS) surface conforms to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and a protective film is formed on the CRS surface through physical and chemical adsorption, thereby effectively inhibiting the corrosion process.

Bifunctional N,O,S-Codoped Carbon Dots for High-Efficiency Corrosion Inhibition and In Situ Fluorescence Monitoring of N80 Steel in HCl

Wang Qi,Liu Siyu,Wang Zhikun,Chen Zixiao,Xiao Peiwen,Shao Xianzhen,Li Miantuo,Su Huiling,Fu Yu,Hu Songqing

Designing intelligent anticorrosion systems that couple robust protection with real-time corrosion visualization remains a formidable challenge in industrial safety and infrastructure longevity. Here, a one-step hydrothermal condensation of 2-aminothiazole and citric acid yields a multifunctional carbon dot (CD) whose surface is densely terminated with N-, O-, and S-bearing functionalities. These heteroatom-rich groups furnish abundant coordination anchors for metal substrates. Electrochemical assays and gravimetric measurements reveal that the CD delivers a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 95.18% for N80 steel in 1 M HCl at a dosage of 200 mg/L. Adsorption conforms to the Langmuir isotherm with a Gibbs free energy of −31.66 kJ/mol, indicating a spontaneous mixed physical-chemical adsorption mechanism dominated by chemisorptive interactions from Fe–N, C–S, and S═O linkages. Surface analyses confirm a compact, adherent protective film that strongly retards both anodic dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution. Capitalizing on the intrinsic blue fluorescence of the CD, the system additionally accomplishes in situ reporting of corrosion progression: fluorescence quenching occurs synchronously with Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ release as the film degrades. This work establishes a single-component “protect-and-report” platform, offering an effective and conceptually innovative strategy for next-generation corrosion management.

Synthesis, electrochemistry, DFT studies and MD simulations of novel dopamine derivatives for corrosion inhibition of Q235 steel in 1 M HCl solution

Xiangchun Yang,Guangling He,Wenjian Dong,Liangmin Yu,Xia Li

Novel multisubstituted dopamine derivatives were synthesized and their ability to protect carbon steel in 1 M HCl was investigated by combining electrochemistry , surface analysis and theoretical calculations. The results showed that 91.53% inhibition could be obtained by adding 0.1 g/L of dopamine derivatives at 298 K. Potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the addition of the dopamine derivative resulted in a corrosion potential difference of ≤ 31 mV, thus identifying the compound as a hybrid inhibitor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle indicate the successful formation of a hydrophobic barrier on the carbon steel surface, and scanning electron microscopy and laser confocal microscopy confirm the improvement in surface morphology. The dopamine derivatives fit the Langmuir adsorption model with both physical and chemical adsorption. Density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that dopamine derivatives rely on lone pairs of electrons in heteroatoms to adsorb parallel to the metal substrate and protect the carbon steel from corrosive media attack. Thus, dopamine derivatives can contribute to the pickling industry as a green corrosion inhibitor to avoid steel damage and waste.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the Corrosion Inhibition Performance of a Quaternary Phosphonium-Based Ionic Liquid for Mild Steel in HCl Medium

Lei Guo,Yue Huang,Yundong Wu,Wei Shi,Faheem Abbas,Yuanhua Lin,Riadh Marzouki,Xingwen Zheng

The corrosion inhibition performance of a quaternary phosphonium-based ionic liquid, i.e., hexadecyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (HPP), on mild steel in 1 M HCl solution was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) methods. The surface characterization of mild steel was examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency increases with its increasing concentration, and it can reach up to 99.1% at the concentration of 0.07 mM HPP. PDP data showed that the absorption of HPP conformed to Langmuir adsorption, which served as a mixed-type inhibitor, involving chemisorption and physisorption. SEM analysis confirmed the formation of barrier film on the metal surface, inhibiting the acid attack. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of inhibitor molecules on the mild steel surface. A match between the experimental and theoretical findings was evidenced.

Solubility Measurement and Correlation of Potassium Hexafluorosilicate (K2SiF6) in H2O, HCl, and H3PO4 Solutions at a Temperature Range of 5–70 °C

Huiyu Zhao,Feng Wu,Qingwen Han,Chen Wang,Sibei Cao,Jiayu Ma

The solubility of potassium hexafluorosilicate (K2SiF6) in pure water and acid solutions (HCl and H3PO4) was conducted within a temperature range of 5–70 °C by the isothermal method. The stability of K2SiF6 in the systems above was also investigated by analyzing the equilibrium solids obtained in different conditions using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The results revealed that the solubility always increases with increasing temperature in all investigated systems. In the presence of hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid, the solubility first increases and then decreases with the increase of acid concentration due to the increase of H+ concentration in hydrochloric acid, the effect of the stepwise dissociation of phosphoric acid, and the changed average ionic activity in solutions. K2SiF6 is stable in pure water and acid solutions. In addition, the experimental data were successfully correlated by the Apelblat empirical equation.

Extraction and separation on Au(III) and Pt(IV) from HCl media using novel piperazine-based ionic liquid as an ionic exchanger

Yangyang Wang,Xiaoxia Liu,Annie Yang,Ping Lv,Lixin Zhang,Yongnian Li,Yanzhao Yang

Selective recovery of gold and platinum from secondary resources is of great significance under the crisis of resource shortage. Hence, the optimal extractant 1-(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl)-4-methyl-piperazin bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C 6 -Et-TMEDA-PIP][Tf 2 N] 2 ) was synthesized and screened out from five piperazine-based ionic liquids (ILs) to construct an IL-water system for Au(III) and Pt(IV) extraction. ILs have high hydrophobicity and low viscosity at room temperature, which can be used as both extractant and hydrophobic phase. The effects of IL dosage, metal concentration and acidity on the extraction efficiency were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the extraction efficiency of 98.5% (Au(III)) and 97.5% (Pt(IV)) can be achieved. The anion exchange mechanism was verified through the combination of Ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Nuclear magnetic spectra (NMR) and quantum chemical calculations. Besides that, the two-factor optimization of the extractant dosage and HCl concentration was carried out by Response surface methodology (RSM), and the effective separation of Au(III) and Pt(IV) was successfully achieved. Au(III)/ Pt(IV) was extracted into the IL phase as [Et-TMEDA-PIP + ][AuCl 4 - ] and can easily be stripped by reduction to Au(0)/Pt(Ⅱ) with H 2 C 2 O 4 /CS(NH 2 ) 2 -HCl, and each extraction ability maintained after 5 turns of extraction cycle experiments. Since the excellent behaviors showed in the multi-metal selective extraction and cycle experiments, the [C 6 -Et-TMEDA-PIP][Tf 2 N] 2 was regarded as the most potential system for Au(III) and Pt(IV) recovery from HCI medium.

Highly Efficient Base-Catalyzed Valorization of Food Waste into Lactic Acid at Mild Conditions with the Pretreatment Using HCl Recovered from PVC

Renjie Yang,Pengfei Chen,Heng Zhong,Fangming Jin

Lactic acid (LA) serves as a crucial platform chemical and monomer for the production of biodegradable plastic known as polylactic acid. Presently, LA is predominantly derived from the fermentation of crop syrups, a process that consumes substantial grain reserves and poses a significant threat to food security. Food waste (FW) represents a promising alternative source for LA production due to its abundant carbohydrate content. This study proposes an efficient and expeditious method for converting FW into LA at a relatively low temperature of 70 °C. The method involves the utilization of hydrochloric acid (HCl) recovered from poly(vinyl chloride) plastic (PVC) for the acid pretreatment of FW. Remarkably, this approach achieves a high LA yield of over 60% (molar yield) from simulated FW, all without the need for complex catalysts. Furthermore, the conversion process benefits from Ba2+-assisted base catalysis, demonstrating robust performance regardless of variations in the major components present in FW. This research not only offers an effective means of valorizing FW but also presents an innovative strategy to reduce the reliance of LA production on food reserves.

Nitrogen and sulfur Co-doped carbon dots as ecofriendly and effective corrosion inhibitors for Q235 carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution

Mingjun Cui,Xia Li

Novel nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) were synthesized via a hydrothermal procedure using citric acid (CA) and thiourea (TU) as precursors, and the corresponding corrosion protection performance was first investigated for Q235 carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution. Experimental results indicated that N,S-CDs as mixed-type corrosion inhibitors could effectively prevent Q235 carbon steel from corrosion in 1 M HCl solution, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency was improved with the increase in N,S-CD concentration. The maximum value was achieved at 400 ppm of N,S-CDs at 25 °C, which was approximately 96.6%, 94.6% and 90.55%, according to the potentiodynamic polarization curves, EIS results and weight loss measurement, respectively. Additionally, with the temperature ranging from 25 to 55 °C, the inhibition efficiency obtained from the weight loss measurement was enhanced from 90.55% to 94.04%. Such superior inhibition effect was assigned to the physisorption and chemisorption of N,S-CDs on the Q235 carbon steel surface, which was also be confirmed by XPS analysis. The adsorption of N,S-CDs onto a steel substrate conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
