A new core–shell Z-scheme heterojunction structured La(OH)3@In2S3 composite with superior photocatalytic performance

Hu Shuting,He Junfeng,Chen Fuming,Liu Bin,zhai Wangjian,He Qinyu

Constructing Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with strong redox ability to make for enhanced photocatalytic performance and efficient charge separation is extremely attractive but still underdeveloped. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction structured La(OH) 3 @In 2 S 3 composite (labeled by “LIS”) with photocatalytic for the methylene orange (MO) degradation under simulated light irradiation has been developed. The as-prepared LIS, together with commercial La(OH) 3 and pure In 2 S 3 fabricated with the identical processing method and starting materials as those of LIS, was characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectra and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show the heterojunction of La(OH) 3 /In 2 S 3 has prolonged the lifetime of the photo-generated carriers. The photocatalytic activity test shows that over only a small amount (0.02 g in 100 ml MO) of LIS, the photodegradation rate of 95% toward MO can be obtained in 90 min, which is about 3.4 times higher than that over pure In 2 S 3 . The active species trapping experiments indicate that there were four active species playing roles in photodegradation as the following order: e –  = ∙OH < h +  < ∙O 2 – . A mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed and well explained the enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work provides a new cost-effective photocatalyst with high photocatalytic properties.

High performance sulfur/carbon cathode for Na-S battery enabled by electrocatalytic effect of Sn-doped In2S3

Jianhui Zhu,Linchao Zeng,Yumin Song,Feng Peng,Yanyi Wang,Tingshu He,Libo Deng,Peixin Zhang

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries have been attracting enormous interests due to their low-cost, high capacity and environmental benignity. However, the shuttle effect and the sluggish electrochemical reaction activity of sodium polysulfides (NaPSs) seriously restrict their practical application. To solve these issues, we rationally designed an advanced Sn-doped In 2 S 3 /S/C cathode for RT Na-S batteries by magnetron sputtering in this work, which exhibited a high reversible capacity (1663.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ) and excellent cycling performance (902.9 mAh g −1 after 50 cycles). The in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated that the Sn-doped In 2 S 3 coating can accelerate charge-transfer kinetics and facilitate the diffusion of Na + . Furthermore, theoretical calculation revealed that doping of Sn into In 2 S 3 can reduce the energy band gap, thus accelerating the electron transfer and promoting the electrochemical conversion of active species. It is demonstrated that adjusting the electronic structure is a reliable method to improve the electrocatalytic effect of catalyst and significantly improve the performance of S cathode in RT Na-S batteries.

P-doped In2S3 nanosheets coupled with InPOx overlayer: Charge-transfer pathways and highly enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

Yixuan Gao,Shihao Zhang,Yishi Wu,Yang Tian,Hongbing Fu,Sihui Zhan

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting via semiconductors is an effective and feasible method for synthesizing renewable hydrogen (H 2 ) fuels. In this study, β-In 2 S 3 nanosheets were first grown on conductive glass. Then, we prepared P-doped β-In 2 S 3 nanosheets with an amorphous InPO x overlayer via the incomplete phosphorization of pristine β-In 2 S 3 nanosheets. When we used this material as photoanode in a PEC cell for water splitting, the photocurrent density drastically increased to 2.2 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE). It enhanced 15 times as the pristine β-In 2 S 3 nanosheets, which was only 0.15 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (solar standard spectrum, 100 mW cm −2 ). The photoelectric conversion efficiency as high as 0.65% at a low potential of 0.81 V vs. RHE was achieved for the phosphorized β-In 2 S 3 nanosheets. A series of experiments proved that the P-doping accelerated semiconductor charge-transport and the InPO x overlayer played cocatalyst role. We penetratingly investigated the pathway of charge transfer via femtosecond transient absorption. The results showed one pathway of charge transfer in pristine β-In 2 S 3 photoanode. However, there were two pathways (core/shell coupling and shallow trap states) for charge transfer in the phosphorized β-In 2 S 3 photoanode, which improved the performance of its PEC water oxidation.

Directional Electron transport in In2S3 enabled by Bi3+ gradient doping and sulfur vacancies for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production

Ruifeng Wang,Jiabao Bai,Zhengtao Qiu,Yelin Ding,Chun Sun

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a versatile green oxidant with wide-ranging applications. In this study, a bismuth ion (Bi 3+ )-gradient-doped indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 ) photocatalyst with abundant sulfur vacancies (V s ) was successfully prepared via a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted hydrothermal method combined with solid-state grinding. The synergy of Bi 3+ doping and V s narrows the bandgap and constructs a built-in electric field for directional carrier transport, enabling the catalyst to achieve a H 2 O 2 production rate of 784.35 μmol g −1  h −1 under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). This work establishes a novel paradigm for designing high-performance sulfide photocatalysts.

Sulfur Vacancy Engineering of Coralloidal Bi2S3@In2S3 Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Removal of Cr(VI)/Antibiotic Mixed Pollutants

Lei Zhang,Jianhao Qiu,Biyao Fang,Guanglu Xia,Chen Chen,Meng Liu,Yixin Li,Yiliang Chen,Jianfeng Yao

Defects can tune the band structure of semiconductors, thereby reconfiguring the corresponding heterojunctions. In this study, coralloidal Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructures rich in sulfur vacancies were successfully developed via a one-step hydrothermal method with content regulation of the sulfur source. In 2 S 3 nanosheets are evenly distributed along Bi 2 S 3 nanorod clusters, imparting a unique coralloidal structure and compact interfacial contact that accelerates the transportation of photoinduced electrons and holes. Moreover, the sulfur vacancy strengthens the light absorption and enables staggered energy band alignment for Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructures, which further promotes charge carrier separation. Owing to these favorable features, the coralloidal Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructure with rich sulfur vacancies exhibited a high photocatalytic efficiency for Cr(VI) reduction, whose reaction rate constant is 34.9, 8.1 and 1.9-fold enhancements compared with those of Bi 2 S 3 , In 2 S 3 , and the Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructure with poor sulfur vacancies, respectively. For simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and antibiotic (tetracycline and ciprofloxacin) degradation under visible light, the excellent Cr(VI) reduction performance was kept and the degradation rates of the antibiotics clearly increased (more than 25%) compared with those of the reactions in the corresponding solo system, which was due to the synergistic effect of efficient utilization of photoinduced electrons and holes. This article provides valuable insight and guidance for the design of defective heterostructures and the treatment of complex water pollutants.

Magnetic field and photon co-enhanced S-scheme MXene/In2S3/CoFe2O4 heterojunction for high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries

Na Xiao,Ping Han,Zhaoqi Chen,Qiuling Chen

Under the spotlight for their potential to reduce over-potential, photo-assisted Li–O 2 batteries still face a key challenge: the rapid recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, which limits their efficiency. In this study, we address this limitation by designing a Li–O 2 battery that integrates both photo and magnetic field assistance, using an S-scheme MXene/In 2 S 3 /CoFe 2 O 4 heterojunction photocathode. This unique combination enhances visible light absorption and generates a strong built-in electric field, facilitating effective charge separation and boosting photocatalytic activity. During discharge, photo-generated electrons participate in the oxygen reduction reaction, while photo-induced holes contribute to the decomposition of discharge products during charging. Furthermore, the introduction of a magnetic field, confirmed through vibrating sample magnetometer, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure, and cyclic voltammetry analyses, enhances electron-hole separation via Lorentz forces and spin–orbit coupling, accelerating the formation and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 . With this synergistic approach, the battery achieves a high specific capacity of 26,500 mAh g −1 , ultra-low oxygen reduction/evolution reaction over-potentials of 0.08 V/0.17 V, and a long cycle life of 2000 cycles with energy efficiency of 98.11 %. This work demonstrates the promising potential of combining photo and magnetic field effects to improve the electrochemical performance of Li–O 2 batteries, opening new avenues for high-performance energy storage systems.

Oxygen-Guided Charge Flow in an S-Scheme BaTiO3–In2S3 Heterojunction for Accelerated Photocatalytic Degradation of Doxycycline Hydrochloride

Yunhong Wang,Shuang Wang,He Cui,Xiaoqian Feng,Huan Wang,Xuelan Hou,Yongfang Yang,Yonghua Zhao

Doxycycline hydrochloride (DH), a persistent antibiotic frequently detected in aquatic environments, remains challenging to eliminate because conventional photocatalysts often suffer from limited visible-light utilization and rapid charge recombination, which suppress reactive oxygen species generation and slow DH transformation. Herein, we develop a visible-light-responsive BaTiO3–In2S3 photocatalyst by constructing an S-scheme heterojunction that steers oxygen-mediated electron transfer for accelerated photocatalytic degradation of DH. Ferroelectric BaTiO3 provides a polarization-associated driving force for carrier separation, whereas In2S3 broadens light harvesting and supplies reductive electrons for oxygen activation. Their work-function mismatch establishes an interfacial electric field that promotes directional carrier migration and suppresses interfacial charge recombination, as evidenced by ex situ/in situ XPS analysis and further supported by DFT analysis. As a result, the BaTiO3–In2S3 heterojunction delivers 59.1% DH conversion with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.02606 min–1, 2.15 times higher than pristine BaTiO3. Quenching and EPR experiments identify ·O2– and h+ as the dominant reactive species, consistent with an S-scheme charge-transfer pathway that preserves high-energy electrons in In2S3 and oxidative holes in BaTiO3. LC-MS analysis suggests three feasible degradation routes, and ECOSAR prediction indicates an overall reduction in aquatic toxicity for several low-molecular-weight intermediates.

Z-Scheme In2S3/MIL-101(Fe) Heterojunction with Synergy of Adsorbability and Photocatalysis toward Highly Efficient Tetracycline Degradation

Shijiao Sun,Wei Chen,Qiuyang Dai,Pengfei Su,Jijun Tang,Jiaoxia Zhang,Long Lin

With the progress of society and the development of medical care, the abuse of antibiotics has become an environmental problem that cannot be ignored. In this work, a significant improvement in photocatalytic efficiency for tetracycline degradation was achieved through the design of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction In 2 S 3 /MIL-101(Fe), realized by precisely controlling the in situ growth of In 2 S 3 nanoblocks on octahedral MIL-101(Fe). MIL-101(Fe) and In 2 S 3 generate a strong built-in electric field to facilitate the efficient transfer and separation of photoexcited carriers. Furthermore, the enhanced specific surface area of In 2 S 3 /MIL-101(Fe) offers more active sites for catalytic reactions. Simulated sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation experiments of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) demonstrated a significant enhancement in the performance of the heterojunction photocatalyst. It achieved an 82.2% TC removal efficiency with a degradation rate constant of 0.0113 min −1 , representing 3.05 times and 4.52 times the performance of pure In 2 S 3 and MIL-101(Fe) materials, respectively. This study offers valuable insights into the design of efficient and stable metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterojunction photocatalysts and holds promising potential for the remediation of antibiotic pollution.

Construction of Chitosan-Coated TiO2/In2S3 Heterojunction on Ti surfaces for NIR Triggered Photothermal/photodynamic Synergistic Enhanced Antibacterial

Peixin Dong,Yangkai Liu,Fulin Deng,Anning Zhao,Min Ren,Linjie Song,Yuanzhen Zhou,Yumeng Dong,Yunjie Xiang,Ugo D‘ Amora,Liqun Xu,Xi Rao

In 2 S 3 forms a Z-scheme heterojunction with TiO 2 , broadening the light response range, improving ROS generation. • Photothermal-photodynamic synergy reduces the required photothermal temperature. • The TiO 2 / In 2 S 3 /Chitosan composite coating exhibits enhanced antibacterial activity. • The composite coating exhibits excellent biocompatibility. Implant-associated bacterial infections remain a major challenge in orthopedic and dental applications, often compromising implant integration and longevity. For this reason, the synergistic antibacterial strategy of photothermal and photocatalysis has become one of the important methods in the field of antibacterial. To synthesize high-efficiency near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive catalysts, a titanium oxide/indium sulfide (TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 ) heterojunction antibacterial coating was prepared on the titanium-based surface using anodic oxidation and wet chemical deposition methods. Compared with titanium alloy, the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction showed a suitable energy band structure, improved light absorption, and enhanced carrier separation capability, thus enhancing photothermal catalytic activity and promoting the production of bacterial reactive oxygen species under NIR light. Indeed, the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction narrowed the bandgap (~2.5 eV) and efficiently generated reactive oxygen species (•O₂⁻ and •OH) under NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the successful deposition of chitosan (CS) endowed the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction with osteogenic activity, promoting the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. In vitro , results demonstrated effective antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and S taphylococcus. aureus , inhibited biofilm formation, and supported collagen secretion and mineralization. In vivo , NIR irradiation raised the implant site temperature to below 50   °C, enabling safe and efficient sterilization, and showing no organ toxicity. These results highlight CS-coated TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction as a promising multifunctional coating that combines infection control with osteogenic support, providing a potential strategy for improving the safety and longevity of titanium-based implants. Shallow-Trap Relay and Type-II Band Alignment Synergy in Vs-ZnS/In2S3 for Accelerated Photoelectrochemical Water Splittin

Hao Yan,Zhou Li,Wang Chengyi,Ruan Mengnan,Liu Zhifeng

In conventional photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting systems, the high recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers and sluggish interfacial charge transfer kinetics serve as the core bottlenecks restricting energy conversion efficiency. In this study, a sulfur-vacancy-engineered Vs-ZnS/In 2 S 3 heterojunction was constructed to demonstrate the “electron relay” function of sulfur vacancies within a Type-II heterojunction. Specifically, sulfur vacancies create a localized shallow trap level below the conduction band of In 2 S 3 , amplifying the potential driving force for interfacial electron transfer. Concurrently, these defect states effectively capture photogenerated electrons transitioning across the interface and serve as highly active sites directly participating in surface reactions, thereby significantly suppressing both the bulk and surface recombination of charge carriers. Benefiting from this synergistic mechanism, the as-prepared Vs-ZnS/In 2 S 3 photoelectrode exhibits exceptional PEC performance, achieving a maximum photocurrent density of 1.26 mA·cm –2 and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of approximately 0.26%. This is substantially superior to pristine ZnS and conventional ZnS/In 2 S 3 electrodes. Kinetic and separation efficiency characterizations indicate that the bulk and surface charge separation efficiencies are drastically improved to 68.4% and 38.1%, respectively. This exceptional performance stems from the synergistic interplay between the heterojunction and the sulfur vacancies: the localized electronic structure modulated by defect states facilitates the directional transfer of interfacial electrons and accelerates the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics. This work provides a novel design paradigm for regulating charge transport pathways within heterojunctions via defect engineering to realize highly efficient energy conversion.

Bi2S3–In2S3 Heterostructures for Efficient Photoreduction of Highly Toxic Cr6+ Enabled by Facet-Coupling and Z-Scheme Structure

Linjuan Wang,Siva Karuturi,Ling Zan

The construction of Z-scheme photocatalyst materials mimicking the natural photosynthesis system provides many advantages, including increased light harvesting, spatially separated reductive and oxidative active sites and strong redox ability. Here, a novel Bi 2 S 3 nanorod@In 2 S 3 nanoparticle heterojunction photocatalyst synthesized through one-pot hydrothermal method for Cr 6+ reduction is reported. A systematic investigation of the microstructural and compositional characteristics of the heterojunction catalyst confirms an intimate facet coupling between (440) crystal facet of In 2 S 3 and (060) crystal facet of Bi 2 S 3 , which provides a robust heterojunction interface for charge transfer. When tested under visible-light irradiation, the Bi 2 S 3 –In 2 S 3 heterojunction photocatalyst with 15% Bi 2 S 3 loading content achieves the highest Cr 6+ photoreduction efficiency of nearly 100% with excellent stability, which is among the best-reported performances for Cr 6+ removal. Further examination using optical, photoelectrochemical, impedance spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy characterizations reveal greatly improved photogenerated charge separation and transfer efficiency, and confirm Z-scheme electronic structure of the photocatalyst. The Z-scheme Bi 2 S 3 –In 2 S 3 photocatalyst demonstrated here presents promise for the removal of highly toxic Cr 6+ , and could also be of interest in photocatalytic energy conversion.

Encapsulation carbon QDs in In-MIL-68 to derive carbon QDs@In2S3 tube for photoreduction of Cr(VI)

Meng Chen,Chao Wang,Lei Wang,Jixiang Xu

In this work, carbon quantum dots@In 2 S 3 hollow tube (CQDs@In 2 S 3 ) with sheet-like hierarchical structure was synthesized by sulfidation CQDs@In-MIL-68. The CQDs@In 2 S 3 -2 exhibited the optimal Cr(VI) reductive ratio of nearly 100% after 45 min light irradiation in solution with pH of 4. The enhanced Cr(VI) reduction activity was ascribed to the efficient separation of electrons and holes after coupling of CQDs. The ·O 2 − was the dominant active specie to reduce Cr(VI), and possible mechanism was proposed. This work provides thought for design of high-performance photocatalysts by loading electron-collecting species to remove environmental pollutants .
