Sodium metal batteries (SMBs) are regarded as compelling energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity and the abundance of sodium (Na). However, SMBs with cycling stability under extreme climatic conditions remain highly challenging, due to the instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and dendrite growth, which is further aggravated when operating under low negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P) conditions. Herein, a high-energy-density and wide-temperature SMB is realized using a hetero-salt-regulated electrolyte strategy. Specifically, lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) is introduced as a hetero-salt additive into a dual-salt ether electrolyte to stabilize the Na metal anodes. Li + competitively coordinates with solvent molecules, causing the Na + solvation structure to shift toward an anion-rich configuration. The formed anion-dominated solvation shell promotes the formation of a mechanically robust and electronically insulating LiF/NaF-rich SEI, which in turn suppresses interfacial side reactions and effectively mitigates dendrite growth. Consequently, the assembled Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (NVPF) SMBs (N/ P = 4:1) achieve a high energy density of 335.90 Wh kg −1 (with power density of 26,650.00 W kg −1 ) at 25 °C (based on total mass of the active materials on anode and cathode) and maintain stable operation across a wide temperature range of −40 to 45 °C. This work expedites the development of SMBs for energy-intensive applications in extreme environments. Download: Download high-res image (228KB) Download: Download full-size image

The escalating demand for high-energy-density storage has intensified research on Li-Cl 2 batteries, which exhibit ultrahigh energy density but suffer from rapid failure due to the poor ionic conductivity and mechanical fragility of naturally formed LiCl interphases on Li metal. Here, we design an organic–inorganic hybrid protective layer (Li 3 Sb/LiF/PVDF, denoted as LSLP@Li) via in situ interfacial engineering. This designed layer effectively isolates the Li anode from corrosive SOCl 2 electrolyte and suppresses parasitic reactions. The synergistic Li 3 Sb/LiF phase ensures high ionic conductivity and guides uniform Li deposition, while the flexible PVDF matrix accommodates cycling-induced volumetric strain. As a result, the LSLP@Li anode maintains structural integrity for over 48 h in corrosive electrolyte (<2 h for bare Li), enabling Li-Cl 2 batteries to maintain over 400 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 . The study advances the understanding of naturally formed LiCl layer on SOCl 2 -based battery and provide valuable strategy to achieve the interfacial stability.

This study systematically investigates the influence of Y 2 O 3 content on the microstructure, thermal conductivity, flexural strength, and dielectric properties of AlN ceramics co-doped with 2 wt% LiF. XRD and Rietveld refinement confirmed the hexagonal crystal structure for all compositions, with the Y2F2 sample exhibiting a distinct lattice contraction. SEM analysis revealed a steady decrease in grain size and a morphological evolution of the secondary phase at grain boundaries from a discontinuous to a continuous state with increasing Y 2 O 3 . TEM further demonstrated that the Y2F2 composition yielded the most favorable microstructure, characterized by minimal interface defects and a well-ordered transition zone at the grain boundary triple junctions. Consequently, the sample with 2 wt% Y 2 O 3 (Y2F2) delivered optimal overall performance: a thermal conductivity of 231.26 W m −1 K −1 , a bending strength of 302 MPa, a dielectric constant of 8.396 (at 1 MHz) with a low loss factor of 1.4 × 10 −3 , and an activation energy of 1.04 eV. These results identify 2 wt% as the critical Y 2 O 3 content that balances oxygen gettering and lattice incorporation, leading to a synergistic optimization of properties.

Lithium–Sulfur (Li‒S) battery is regarded as the most promising next-generation energy storage system due to their low cost and high theoretical energy density. However, the formation of dendritic morphology of Li makes the side reactions between Li metal anode and lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) more serious, leading to the depletion active materials and short lifespan of batteries , which becomes a bottle neck of their practical application. Herein, a LiF-rich Li deposition regulating layer (LDRL) is developed to protect the Li anode in Li‒S battery. The LiF-rich LDRL can effectively regulate the deposition morphology of Li, thus decreases the corrosion of the LiPSs to the Li anode. A symmetrical cell with LDRL can stably cycle for more than 700 h at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . The Li‒S batteries using Li anodes with a LDRL presents better cycling stability (760 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 C) compared with the batteries using the bare Li anodes. This work provides a new idea for protecting Li anode in Li‒S battery.

Glass-free MgO-based microwave dielectric ceramics (1-x) wt% (0.98 MgO-0.02 Al 2 O 3 )-x wt% LiF (x = 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4) were synthesized where LiF and Al 2 O 3 were utilized as sintering additive and reinforcement phase in MgO matrix respectively. It was found that ion substitution is apt to occur between LiF and MgO, leading to the formation of oxygen vacancies and MgF 2 . Nevertheless, different from ordinary liquid-phase sintering, morphologies of ceramics were distinctly altered with grains changing from polyhedron to sphere-like shape and densities underwent obvious decrease when excessive amount of LiF was introduced and we call it excessive liquid-phase sintering. Grain boundary weakening caused by this circumstance would exert an adverse effect on physical properties. Moreover, LiF addition dramatically reduced dielectric breakdown strength and altered the dielectric breakdown behavior of MgO-based ceramics, which is dominated by electrical breakdown mechanism. Combination of good properties were achieved in 1 wt% LiF modified MgO-based ceramics sintered at 950 °C which exhibited superior microwave properties (ε r = 9.56, tanδ = 9.2 × 10 −5 , Qf = 124,600 GHz), high flexural strength (184.5 MPa), high thermal conductivity (21.3 W/(m⋅K)), high coefficient of thermal expansion (∼12 ppm/°C) and moderate electrical properties (E b = 35.9 kV/mm, ρ = 4.9 × 10 12 Ω cm).

The parasitic side reaction between the electrolyte and the lithium metal (Li 0 ) forms an unstable heterogeneous interphase, causing the poor reversibility of Li plating/stripping. The rational design of protection layer on Li 0 anode is imperative to inhibit side reactions and achieve fast Li + transport on the Li 0 /electrolyte interface. Herein, by firstly coordinating the bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion (FSI − ) to the protection layer, a layer consisting of 2D ionic vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks (ivCOF-FSI) is proposed to stabilize the Li 0 /electrolyte interface. As demonstrated theoretically and experimentally, the triazine group in the cationic framework is identified to promote Li + de-solvation process while partial FSI − prefers to form LiF-rich interphase. Attributed to these superiorities, the ivCOF-FSI layer endows the Li 0 /electrolyte interface with high reversibility in carbonate-based electrolytes by simultaneously suppressing the side effect and achieving rapid Li + transfer. Combined with the high stability of solid-liquid interface, the LiFePO 4 full cells with ivCOF-FSI/Li anode display enhanced cyclability under a high cathode loading of 9.4 mg cm −2 and a low negative/positive capacity ratio of 5. This work provides a novel route for stabilizing the interfacial chemistry of solid-liquid interface, aiming to pave the way for the next-generation high-energy-density batteries .

Quasi-solid polymer electrolytes (QSPEs) have been attracted significant attentions due to their benefits for simultaneously improved safety and energy density of batteries. Developing electrolytes capable of forming a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is a great challenge for QSPE-based lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, unlike previously reports that the reconstruction of Li + solvation structures in QSPE requires time-consuming bottom-up polymer synthesis, in current study, a facile approach has been developed to reconstruct the Li + solvation structures in QSPE by adjustment of the salt concentrations. The high proportion of Li + -anion complexes can effectively accelerate interfacial Li + diffusion, mitigate the decompositions of organic solvents and induces the formation of a LiF-rich SEI layer, contributing to suppressed Li-dendrite growth. As a result, the Li/QSPE-3/LiFePO 4 (LFP) cell performs an ultralong lifespan with capacity retention of 77.4% over 3000 cycles at 1 C. With a high-voltage LiCoO 2 cathode, the cell can stably cycle over 200 cycles at 25 °C (capacity retention of ∼83.8%). With accelerated ion transport dynamics due to the reconstructed Li + solvation structure, the QSPE-3 (the salt concentration is 3 M) is applicable in a wide temperature range. The Li/QSPE-3/LFP full cell exhibits 58.1% and 102.6% of discharge capacity at −15 and 90 °C, respectively, compared to those operated at 25 °C. This study demonstrates a facile yet effective approach on enhancing electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability, enabling the LMBs with simultaneously enhanced safety and high energy density.

MXenes, represented by Ti3C2Tx, have been widely studied in the electrochemical energy storage fields, including lithium-ion batteries, for their unique two-dimensional structure, tunable surface chemistry, and excellent electrical conductivity. Recently, Nb2CTx, as a new type of MXene, has attracted more and more attention due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 542 mAh g–1. However, the preparation of few-layer Nb2CTx nanosheets with high-quality remains a challenge, which limits their research and application. In this work, high-quality few-layer Nb2CTx nanosheets with a large lateral size and a high conductivity of up to 500 S cm–1 were prepared by a simple HCl-LiF hydrothermal etching method, which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of previously reported Nb2CTx. Furthermore, from its aqueous ink, the viscosity-tunable organic few-layer Nb2CTx ink was prepared by HCl-induced flocculation and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone treatment. When using the organic few-layer Nb2CTx ink as an additive-free anode of lithium-ion batteries, it showed excellent cycling performance with a reversible specific capacity of 524.0 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g–1 and 444.0 mAh g–1 after 5000 cycles at 1 A g–1. For rate performance, a specific capacity of 159.8 mAh g–1 was obtained at a high current density of 5 A g–1, and an excellent capacity retention rate of about 95.65% was achieved when the current density returned to 0.5 A g–1. This work presents a simple and scalable process for the preparation of high-quality Nb2CTx and its aqueous/organic ink, which demonstrates important application potential as electrodes for electrochemical energy storage devices.

Electrolyte is considered to be one of the key factors affecting electrolysis in the rare earth and their alloys industry. Generally, the fluoride system is chosen as the electrolyte for industrial production. However, the molten salt electrolysis method for fluoride-oxide systems is not well understood and has not been systematically studied at this stage. In order to supplement this part, lanthanum (La) ions have been chosen as the research object in this paper to systematically investigate the preparation of La–Ni alloy from LaF3–LiF-CaF2–La2O3 molten salt. A series of electrochemical methods were used to investigate the mechanism and kinetic properties of La(III) reduction on W and Ni electrodes. The electrochemical reduction properties and kinetic parameters of La were obtained. La–Ni alloy was prepared by potentiostatic electrolysis, and it was verified by detailed analysis through characterization methods. On this basis, LaNi5 intermetallic compound was successfully prepared on Ni electrode. This study provides valuable theoretical guidance for the development of La alloy preparation with fluoride salt systems in industry.

High-capacity silicon/carbon composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries face rapid capacity degradation from extreme volume changes due to conventional organic-dominated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) lacking mechanical/ionic stability. Constructing robust inorganic SEI (e.g., LiF-dominated interphases) requires synergistic control of electrolyte interactions at the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) and stress-adaptive interfacial architectures. Herein, a hierarchical dual-coating strategy integrating polyaniline (PANi) and laser-induced graphene (LIG) on SiO x anodes addresses this challenge. PANi layer selectively enriches fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC) at the IHP via dipole-dipole interaction, enabling preferential FEC reduction at 1.3 V (vs. Li/Li + ) to form LiF-dominated SEI. Theoretical calculations confirm higher FEC adsorption density and stronger adsorption energy on the hierarchically dual-coated SiO x /LIG/PANi-2 (−0.33 eV) versus bare SiO x (−0.09 eV). Meanwhile, LIGʼs 3D porous conductive scaffold dissipates stress, sustaining structural integrity under repeated expansion. The optimized SiO x /LIG/PANi-2 anode achieves 1812.5 mAh g −1 initial capacity with 90.5 % initial Coulombic efficiency at 0.1 A g −1 and retains 87.7 % capacity after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 , demonstrating exceptional electrochemical stability. Post-cycling analyses further validate the homogeneity of LiF-rich SEI, robust mechanical resilience, and exceptional electrode integrity. This atomic-scale IHP regulation, harmonized with macro-scale stress engineering, offers scalable strategies for silicon anodes in high-energy-density batteries.

Polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) based polymer electrolyte shows mechanical flexibility, soft and intimidate physical contact and good electrochemical stability, however, low ionic conductivity at room temperature and unstable interphases against Li metal hinder its application. In this article, we propose a universal strategy to prepare localized high concentration polymer electrolytes (LHCPE) in which high concentration lithium salt (LiTFSI) dissolved in tiny residual solvent (DMF) and the PVDF-HFP serves as solid dilution. The LHCPE regulates the solvation structure of lithium ions with anions instead of DMF solvent, allowing more anions to coordinate with Li + and forming amount contact ion pairs (CIPs) and aggregates (AGGs). As a result, high ionic conductivity (5.9 × 10 −4 S cm −1 ) and low activation energy (0.10 eV) achieved. The LHCPE also induces the decomposition of anions-derived LiF-rich interphases, that is ionic conducive and mechanical robust, thereby greatly improving the charge transfer kinetics and stability towards Li metal anodes . Consequently, at 0.5 mA cm −2 and 0.25 mAh cm −2 , stable and long-term cycling over 2000 h obtained under room temperature in Li//Li symmetric cells achieved. The full solid-state LFP//LHCPE//Li cells further exhibit excellent capacity retention of 82.83 % even after 1200 cycles at room temperature and a high rate of 8 C (1C=170 mA·g −1 ). Our work shed light on the design of high-performance polymer-based composite electrolytes by manipulating the Li solvation structure.

Black phosphorus (BP) has been highly regarded as a favourable candidate for fast-charging anode applications owing to its high theoretical capacity and advantageous charge–discharge platform. However, BP faces challenges related to compromised electrochemical performance resulting from an unstable solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) and substantial volumetric expansion. This study proposes the engineering of an inorganic-dense SEI on the surface of BP-C through the strategic incorporation of lithium fluoride (LiF). The presence of LiF in the system preferentially promotes LiPF 6 adsorption from the electrolyte, facilitating the in-situ formation of a lithium-enriched inorganic SEI film on the BP-C particulate surfaces. This strategic formation effectively mitigates subsequent electrolytic decomposition, accommodates volumetric expansion, and substantially improves the rate capability and cycling stability of the system. Consequently, the BP-LiF-C electrode demonstrates high initial coulombic efficiency of 86.8 % and maintains a steady capacity of 926.1 mAh g −1 over 700 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 . Moreover, when paired with a LiFePO 4 cathode, the full cell exhibits long cycling stability, retaining 98.6 % of its capacity after 500 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 , and performs at high rate. Therefore, utilising LiF to modulate the interfacial architecture of BP-based electrode composites provide notable guidance to enhance energy storage systems.
