An acidophilic microbial consortium (AMC) was used to investigate the fundamental mechanism behind the adverse effects of pulp density increase in the bioleaching of waste lithium ion batteries (WLIBs). Results showed that there existed the effect of metal-ion stress on the bio-oxidative activity of AMC. The Li+ and Co2+ accumulated in the leachate were the direct cause for the decrease in lithium and cobalt recovery yields under a high pulp density. In a simulated bioleaching system with 4.0% (w ⋅v–1) LiCoO2, the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content in AMC increased from 0.82 to 6.02 within 24 h, which was almost three times higher than that of the control (2.04). After the supplementation of 0.30 g⋅L–1 of exogenous glutathione (GSH), the bacterial intracellular ROS content decreased by 40% within 24 h and the activities of intracellular ROS scavenging enzymes, including glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT), were 1.4- and 2.0-folds higher in comparison with the control within 24 h. In the biofilms formed on pyrite in the bioleaching of WLIBs, it was found that metal-ion stress had a great influence on the 3-D structure and the amount of biomass of the biofilms. After the exogenous addition of GSH, the structure and the amount of biomass of the biofilms were restored to some extent. Eventually, through ROS regulation by the exogenous addition of GSH, very high metal recovery yields of 98.1% Li and 96.3% Co were obtained at 5.0% pulp density.

The wider application of lithium ion batteries brings more production of spent ones to be recovered. There is a pyrometallurgical treatment by getting negative and positive materials burning together. The paper provides theoretical analysis and support for the feasibility of the treatment. Positive material graphite's burning and pyrolysis of negative material lithium cobalt oxide can make up as a coupling reaction, decreasing the decomposition temperature of lithium cobalt oxide from 1426 K to 1173 K. From the point view of crystal structure, the stronger attraction of graphite to oxygen than lithium and cobalt make oxygen octahedrons insides lithium cobalt oxide unstable to break down. We definite the phenomenon as the oxygen octahedrons collapsing model. Coupling reaction theory and crystal structure analysis indicate that graphite does promote the pyrolysis of lithium cobalt oxide. The study can guide industrial application to recover lithium ion batteries whose structure is similar to oxygen octahedrons at a comparatively low temperature.

Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy densities have aroused intensive interest in electrical energy storage devices but suffer from the risk of thermal runaway, especially under harsh conditions of high temperature or thermal abuse. Pursuing intrinsically thermally stable electrolytes with higher performance and higher safety beyond commercial liquid electrolytes is a major challenge in this field. Here we report on a unique, highly durable sulfolane-based gel electrolyte constructed by a facile gelling strategy. This method takes advantages of thermotolerant sulfolane as a plasticizer and strong dipole-dipole interactions to achieve the gelation of polymer polyvinylidene fluoride/polyethylene oxide. We systematically investigated the influence of gelled sulfolane on gel formation, lithium plating/stripping, and solid electrolyte interphase. Benefiting from favorable interface engineering, the sulfolane-based gel electrolyte remarkably enhances the cyclic and safety performances of LMBs. When used in the Li/LiCoO 2 battery, the resulting gel electrolyte enables long-term cycling stability at high temperatures up to 90°C. Moreover, the thermal safety of practical Li/LiCoO 2 pouch cells (up to 190°C) has also been demonstrated by accelerating rate calorimetry. These results contribute to the development of high-safety LMBs that require abuse tolerance, high energy, and long calendar life.

The mutability of layered structures and unfavorable side reactions between cathodes and traditional electrolytes are barriers for the commercialization of LiCoO 2 (LCO) at high voltages (above 4.2 V). Metal fluorides, owing to their effective passivation effect, have been considered promising coating materials for various electrochemical applications. As a chemical stability species, LiF can combine the advantages of fluorides with those of lithium without introducing extra elements. In this study, we deposited a uniform nanosized LiF thin film coating onto the LCO particles by coprecipitation to enhance the reversible capacity and cycle stability of the LCO batteries at high voltage. Electrochemical tests indicated that at room temperature, the LCO@LiF cell exhibited an excellent capacity retention with 71.4% after 300 cycles, which is higher than that of many reported oxide and fluoride coatings for LCO at high voltage. This study demonstrated that LiF, an outstanding cathode surface protection layer, can hamper the immediate contact of LCO with the electrolyte, stabilize the LCO surface structure, and successfully protect the cathode from corrosion by the electrolyte. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the electrochemical properties of the LiF-coated LCO was observed. This study provides a facile commercial approach for the mass production of high-voltage LCO cathodes.

Developing high-voltage LiCoO 2 (LCO) is essential in realizing practical all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, high voltage-induced structural instability and oxygen evolution are crucial for the fast degradation of layered metal oxide cathodes. This study reveals that the zirconization on the near-surface region of LCO shows superior electrochemical performance at high voltage (≥ 4.5 V). High-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy firstly reveals the formation of sub-nanoscale Li 2 CoZrO 4 with disordered rock salt ( α -LiFeO 2 ) phase on the surface of LCO. Furthermore, zirconization could prevent the bending of the Co–O layers at high voltage, significantly inhibiting the formation of microcracks after many cycles and enhancing the structural stability of LCO, as further confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Further, Electron paramagnetic resonance and Electron energy loss spectroscopy provide direct experimental evidence that lattice oxygen on LCO at high voltage has greatly deactivated in sub-nanoscale zirconization (Li 2 CoZrO 4 ). Density functional theory calculations reveal that Li 2 CoZrO 4 enhances the stability of lattice oxygen. Therefore, in ASSLBs, LZSO@LCO cathode exhibits impressive electrochemical cycling stability, e.g., 78.1% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.5 C and 71.2% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.1 C at an extremely low temperature of −20 °C.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been attracting research interest due to their specific properties including supper large surface area, more active sites and fast electron transmission, which are beneficial to the improvement of energy and power densities for supercapacitors (SCs). In this paper, 2D LiCoO 2 (2D-LCO) is prepared by fine-tuning the time in the synthesis process through a fast-composite-hydroxide-mediated approach. The electrode with the 2D-LCO mass load of 0.75 mg/cm 2 exhibits the high specific capacitance of 310 mF/cm 2 at 5 mV/s. Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by 2D-LCO//Fe 2 O 3 /FeOOH delivers a high areal energy density of 56.25 μWh/cm 2 at 1100 μW/cm 2 with working window of 2.2 V and an excellent cycling stability of 80% at current density of 10 mA/cm 2 for 2000 cycles.

Discharging lithium-ion batteries to zero-charge state is one of the most reliable ways to avoid the thermal runaway during their transportation and storage. However, the zero-charge state causes the degradation or even complete failure of lithium-ion batteries. Specialized solutions are required to endow lithium-ion batteries with improved zero-charge storage performance, namely, the ability to tolerate zero-charge state for a long time without unacceptable capacity loss. Here, we report that a Li5FeO4 cathode additive can improve the zero-charge storage performance of LiCoO2/mesocarbon microbead (MCMB) batteries. The irreversible charge capacity of the Li5FeO4 additive results in the downregulation of anode and cathode potentials when the battery is at zero-charge state. More importantly, the Li5FeO4 additive offers a small discharge plateau below 2.9 V versus Li/Li+, which can hold the anode potential at zero-charge battery state (APZBS) in a potential range of 2.4∼2.5 V versus Li/Li+ during storage for 10 days. Such a precise control on APZBS not only suppresses the decomposition of the solid electrolyte interface film on the MCMB anode and inhibits the dissolution of the copper current collector occurring at high potentials but also avoids the excessive decrease of the cathode potential at the zero-charge battery state and consequently protects the LiCoO2 cathode from overlithiation occurring at low potentials. As a result, the Li5FeO4 additive with a charge capacity percentage of 23% in the cathode increases the capacity recovery ratio of the LiCoO2/MCMB battery from 37.6 to 95.5% after being stored at the zero-charge state for 10 days.

During a practical battery manufacture process, the LiCoO2 (LCO) electrodes are usually rolled with high pressure to achieve better performance, including reducing electrode polarization, increasing compact density, enhancing mechanical toughness, etc. In this work, a high-voltage LCO (HV-LCO) is achieved via modulating a commercialized LCO with an Al/F enriched and spinel reinforced surface structure. We reveal that the rolling can more or less introduce risk of grain-boundary-cracking (GBC) inside the HV-LCO and accelerate the capacity decay when cycled at 3–4.6 V vs Li/Li+. In particular, the concept of interface structure is proposed to explain the reason for the deteriorated cycle stability. As the GBC is generated, the interface structure of HV-LCO alters from a surface spinel phase to a hybrid of surface spinel plus boundary layer phases, leading to the exposure of some the nonprotective layer phase against the electrolyte. This alternation causes serious bulk structure damage upon cycles, including expanding GBC among the primary crystals, forming intragranular cracks and inactive spinel phases inside the bulk regions, etc., eventually leading to the deteriorated cycle stability. Above all, we realize that it is far from enough to achieve a eligible high-voltage LCO via only applying surface modification. This work provides a new insight for developing more advanced LCO cathodes.

Although elevating the upper cutoff voltage can directly increase the reversible capacity of LiCoO2 (LCO), severe capacity fading caused by structural and interfacial degradation restricts its practical application. Herein, we propose a synergetic modification strategy combined with La3+ doping and LiTaO3 (LTO) coating to enhance the electrochemical performance of LCO operating at high voltages. Generally, La3+ doping can increase the interlayer spacing and significantly increases the ion conductivity, while the LTO coating acts as a robust protection layer, which also facilitates the interfacial Li+ diffusion. As a result, comodified LCO shows an enhanced capacity retention of 88.6% after 200 cycles at 3.0–4.5 V, while the capacity retention of Bare LCO is only 25.4%. For a higher cutoff voltage of 4.6 V, comodified LCO still exhibits an excellent capacity retention of 85.7% after 100 cycles.

Lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), as a popular commercial material, can release higher capacity by increasing the charging voltage. However, deep delithiation leads to the dissolution of elements and structural disorder. Meanwhile, high-temperature performance is still in urgent need to be improved in practical application. Here, we use LiNO 3 , NaF and H 3 BO 3 as raw materials to construct the outer LiF-rich layer and the inner B, F gradient doped hierarchical nanostructures through stirring and calcination . The electrochemically stable LiF-rich surface helps to form a favorable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer to prevent electrolyte penetration. The gradient doping of B and F in the subsurface region increases the stability of the lattice at high temperature and high potential. The unique structure enables treated LCO to demonstrate stable cycling under high voltage (4.6 V) with a capacity retention of 93.2% after 800 cycles and displayed 95.2% retention for 100 cycles under high temperature (45 °C). The postmortem analyses after long cycles prove the strategy of surface modification helps to protect the structure and reduce adverse reactions. This study provides a simple and extendable method for improving the cycling stability of cathodes at high temperature and high voltage.

High-voltage lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 , LCO) offers high energy density for advanced electronics, but elevated cut-off voltages accelerate surface Co/O loss and structural degradation. Here, we report a scalable waste-to-value upcycling route that combines process-intensified regeneration with interfacial engineering to convert end-of-life LCO into a high-voltage-stable cathode. Mechanochemical leaching and continuous NH 4 HCO 3 -assisted co-precipitation produce a spherical Al-doped, Li-deficient precursor, which is regenerated by relithiation and calcination. Surface hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate followed by mild lithium-assisted annealing forms a conformal Li-Ti-O shell and a shallow Ti-enriched near-surface gradient. Multiscale characterization verifies the nanoscale coating and interfacial transition region, and first-principles calculations show that Ti lowers the surface energy of the LCO (104) facet, explaining the improved near-surface stability. The optimized material delivers 228.8 mAh g –1 at 0.2 C, 183.7 mAh g –1 at 5 C, and 85% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1 C (3.0–4.6 V). This regeneration-to-interface-conversion strategy provides a practical route for greener, scalable rejuvenation of reclaimed LCO.

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section To meet the escalating demand for high-performance LiCoO 2 (LCO) cathodes, elevating the charging cut-off voltage becomes highly imperative to achieve markedly enhanced specific capacities. However, high-voltage operation is always accompanied by structural instability, notably deleterious bulk phase transitions and severe interfacial degradation. Herein, we propose a collaborative strategy that integrates a medium-entropy (Mg, Eu, and W) doped bulk architecture with an in situ formed epitaxial entropy-assisted MoB surface coating, which effectively suppresses the detrimental surface-initiated structural degradation, enabling a robust, high-voltage-tolerant LCO cathode. The synergistic co-doping of Mg, Eu, and W not only strengthens the structural framework without crack formation but also curtails lattice oxygen loss while accelerating Li + diffusion kinetics. Moreover, the in situ generation of an entropy-stabilized MoB coating provides exceptional resistance against corrosion induced by electrolyte decomposition. Using this design principle, the LCO featuring surface-to-bulk synergistic modification is endowed with exceptional wide-temperature-tolerant electrochemical stability at a high voltage of 4.65 V, delivering an outstanding rate capability of 153.3 mAh g −1 at 5C and long-term cycling stability with 84.4% capacity retention after 400 cycles. Our contribution hugely advances the high-voltage LCO cathodes toward the practical commercialization of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 随着高能量密度锂离子电池的发展,提高LiCoO 2 (LCO)正极材料的充电截止电压是提升其比容量的有效途径。
